Speech-Language Pathologists’ Perspectives On Preparedness For Interprofessional Collaborative Practice In School Settings, Rachel Sawatzky
Speech-Language Pathologists’ Perspectives On Preparedness For Interprofessional Collaborative Practice In School Settings, Rachel Sawatzky
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
According to a recent study (ASHA, 2017), only 54% of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) employed in a school reported they felt very prepared to engage in interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP). It is essential for SLPs to engage in IPCP with a wide range of other professionals including, but not limited to: regular education teachers, special education teachers, occupational therapists (OT), physical therapists (PT), administrators, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and audiologists. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the perspectives of new SLPs on their preparedness for IPCP. The study sheds light on whether the SLP felt prepared for …

Social Support For Mothers Living With Hiv: A Person-Environment Interaction Framework, Jessica Eden Mandell
Social Support For Mothers Living With Hiv: A Person-Environment Interaction Framework, Jessica Eden Mandell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Mothers living with HIV are vulnerable to stressors associated with both motherhood and living with a chronic illness. Strong familial support is related to decreased risk for developing mental and physical health problems. To date, research has primarily focused on HIV status disclosure to supportive networks. The current study explored associations between familial social support and personal (spirituality, depressive symptoms), relational (positive and negative parenting practices), and environmental (social support from friends and community cohesion) factors among mothers living with HIV. Fifty-seven mothers living with HIV were interviewed, and a three-step hierarchical regression was conducted. The final model was significant, …

Family Medicine Clerkship Students’ Experiences With Team-Based Care, Ivy A. Click, Jodi Polaha, Jason B. Moore
ETSU Faculty Works
Interprofessional team-based care has the potential to improve patient outcomes, improve access to care, decrease costs, and improve team satisfaction. In recent years, efforts to implement team-based care have grown with the adoption of the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) and an increasing focus on value-based payment models. To better prepare our learners for this future, we introduced a formal team-based care curriculum in our three family medicine residency programs and one pediatric program. In addition to curricula for residents, we developed a team-based care didactic for family medicine clerkship students, presented by an interprofessional team of faculty. This session will …

Toward Expert Consensus On Guidelines For The Use Of Yoga In The Treatment Of Anxiety In Children And Adolescents., Laura J. Abels
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem Statement: Despite clinical evidence to support the use of yoga as a treatment option for children and adolescents with anxiety, clinical practice guidelines do not exist. Purpose: This project used the modified Delphi technique to determine if consensus exists on the need for clinical practice guidelines among experts in the fields of child and adolescent psychiatry, psychology, and yoga. Additionally, this project aimed to determine if consensus exists on what should be included in clinical practice guidelines for the use of yoga as a therapeutic intervention for anxiety in children and adolescents. Methods: Three rounds of questionnaires were used …

African-American Male Perceptions On Public Schooling After Discipline: A Contextual Portrait From The Inner City, Kevin William Smith Jr.
African-American Male Perceptions On Public Schooling After Discipline: A Contextual Portrait From The Inner City, Kevin William Smith Jr.
LMU Theses and Dissertations
Literature shows that one of the major issues affecting the achievement of inner-city African- American male students in public-schools is the ineffectiveness of disciplinary procedures. These studies have shown a direct positive relationship between student behavioral problems and academic failure. This study was an attempt at answering Noguera’s (2008) call for understanding more fully how African-American males come to perceive schooling, in particular their discipline experiences, and how environmental and cultural forces impact this perception of their behavior and performance in school. This was a qualitative study that heard the stories of inner-city African-American male students who were pushed out …

Missing The 'B' In Lgbtq+, Jenna C. Haddock
Undergraduate Research Symposium
With the emergence of the awareness of the LGBTQ+ community, there has been more research done with individuals who identify as such. However, an analysis of articles claiming to utilize and/or involve LGBTQ+ individuals has shown that a vast majority of this research lacks the objective inclusion of individuals deriving from populations specific to each orientation, especially bisexuality. This review focuses on the exclusion of bisexual individuals within scientific articles claiming to involve LGBTQ+ populations. Specifically, although some statistical results are shown for gay and lesbian populations, experimental data derived from individuals who identify as bisexual are either not specified …

The Lived Experiences Of Black Men Creating A Third Space At A Predominantly White Institution, Steven E. Radwanski
The Lived Experiences Of Black Men Creating A Third Space At A Predominantly White Institution, Steven E. Radwanski
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of Black men creating third spaces at a predominantly White institution (PWI). The use of the third space theory permitted the researcher to examine both the student's current cultural experiences and the campus climate to understand better how Black men create a third space (Bhabha, 1994). Many Black men have found themselves in between two cultures their previous cultural experiences, and the campus climate of the institution they are attending.
The research gathered and analyzed through this study indicates that the third space theory can be situated to the student's …

Characterizing The Role Of Psychological Stress In The Development Of Persistent Pain, Katherine M. Bernier Carney
Characterizing The Role Of Psychological Stress In The Development Of Persistent Pain, Katherine M. Bernier Carney
Doctoral Dissertations
Persistent pain is a complex experience that can be difficult to treat if there is no obvious source. Nurses caring for patients with chronic pain may rely on pain severity to direct care, although this does not address the biopsychosocial factors that influence persistent pain states. Psychological stress is a potentially modifiable factor that has been proposed to influence the experience of pain, but the role of stress in developing persistent pain states remains undefined. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine stress-pain relationships by investigating how stress influences chronic pain trajectories. To address this query, three perspectives are …

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The discussion provided will …
The Impact Of The Opioid Epidemic: Historical, Healthcare And Societal Perspectives, Nicole Giordano
The Impact Of The Opioid Epidemic: Historical, Healthcare And Societal Perspectives, Nicole Giordano
Academic Festival
The opioid epidemic is currently one of the biggest crises that the United States is experiencing. This epidemic has impacted the United States in many ways, all of which can be divided into three perspectives: historical, healthcare, and societal. Historically, the invention of opioid medications was a revolution in pain medication, but their widespread use has caused a continuous cycle of overuse and misuse, followed by a state of panic and fear, and then reacceptance. From a healthcare perspective, there have been many different implications in healthcare regarding the prescribing, dosing, and misuse of opioid medications both within the hospital …

The Sociological, Religious, Psychological, And Media Influences On Corporal Punishment, Deanna Aliperti
Academic Festival
This paper offers the sociological, religious, psychological, media perspectives on the use of corporal punishment and its effects. From the sociological perspective, it has been found that factors such as one’s gender, race and culture, socioeconomic status, and the region in which someone lives can affect the prevalence of the usage of corporal punishment. From the religion perspective, it has been found that conservative religious southerners and their belief in biblical literalism influences their increased usage of corporal punishment, however, they can only partake in this under certain guidelines. Corporal punishment can also have psychological effects on those it is …
