When Research Is Relational: Supporting The Research Practices Of Indigenous Studies Scholars, Danielle Cooper
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
In 2017 Ithaka S+R launched a project to explore the changing research methods and practices of Indigenous Studies scholars across Canada and the US with the goal of identifying services to better support them in ways that are also beneficial to Indigenous communities more broadly. The project was undertaken by a cohort of research teams at 11 academic libraries with guidance from a group of advisors comprised of Indigenous scholars and librarians. Each research team in the cohort developed findings and next steps based on their local research engaging with Indigenous Studies scholars at their own institutions (listed in Appendix …

Loneliness And The Aging Population, Nelson W. Weaver
Loneliness And The Aging Population, Nelson W. Weaver
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Previous research has shown social isolation and loneliness contribute to decreased quality of life, as well as compromised psychological and physical health among older adults. This represents a public health crisis in the context of a growing aging population anticipated to cost the United States over 126 billion dollars. The purpose of this research review is to build the case for conducting an effectiveness study aimed to reduce feelings of loneliness and social isolation in the aging population. To achieve this aim, I review the various characteristics of the aging population, the social and financial ramifications associated with social isolation …
Using Data And Research In Social Work As Catalysts For Effective Community Change, Haley Lee Eakin
Using Data And Research In Social Work As Catalysts For Effective Community Change, Haley Lee Eakin
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Montana communities are faced with complex social issues. It is imperative that data and technology be leveraged to understand where these issues stem from, how they connect, and possible solutions. Due to its low population density, Montana is a data desert. There is scarce data collected at the local level and only a small portion of the data collected is made publicly available. This often leaves social workers and other service providers without digestible and easily accessible data to use in their decision-making processes, grant proposals, and practices. In response to this, myself and a small team of social workers …
Marcia Levetown Oral History.
Pediatric Palliative Care Oral History Project
As an intensivist, Dr. Levetown noted three things: 1. a large proportion of critically ill kids were actually "chronically dying." 2. families' information about their child's condition was incomplete or inaccurate and, feeding unrealistic hopes and influencing decisions based on outcomes that "were really not on the table." And 3. family units were often overwhelmed by the child's illness, too often leaving the family unit in varying levels of social, physical, mental, and emotion ruin. Dr. Levetown described her early experience with palliative care and hospice, her involvement with several research projects on reforming the culture of death at the …

Branch Campuses: Extending The Reach Of Social Work Education, Simon Funge, Dana Sullivan, Larry Owens, Whitney Harper
Social Work Faculty Publications
The study explored the characteristics and experiences of branch campus social work education programs and educators in the U.S. Eighty-one (n = 81) branch campus social work educators in 26 states completed an online survey. Findings revealed that undergraduate and graduate branch campus social work education was primarily delivered face-to-face to non-traditional students. Half of these programs were recently established, and the majority were expected to grow. However, teaching these students was not necessarily viewed as a shared responsibility. Though some branch campus faculty reported higher workloads and limited connections to parent campus colleagues, faculty generally reported great satisfaction teaching …

Conflict In The Workplace: An Empirical Analysis Of The Antecedents And Resolutions, Elizabeth K. Schamber, Anneliese Davis
Conflict In The Workplace: An Empirical Analysis Of The Antecedents And Resolutions, Elizabeth K. Schamber, Anneliese Davis
Undergraduate Research Celebration 2019
Various types of conflict can be identified in organizations, such as interpersonal conflict, team conflict, and inter-group conflict. Conflict resolution is crucial in the workplace to create a healthy and happy work environment employees want to work in. Without effective conflict resolution, it would be hard for people to get along, quality work wouldn’t get done, and it would be difficult to communicate effectively between employees, teams, and departments. This report will focus on the different underlying causes of conflict at the individual level in the workplace and what strategies are used to solve these conflicts. The information collected for …

Marriage And Family Therapist Websites: A Qualitative Content Analysis, Thomas Bischoff
Marriage And Family Therapist Websites: A Qualitative Content Analysis, Thomas Bischoff
Doctoral Dissertations
The positive benefits of therapy are well-established (Duberstein et al., 2018) and therapy continues to make significant strides with regard to therapeutic outcomes. However, little is known regarding client initiation processes as well as how therapists reach out to potential clients. Clients present with a variety of challenges, and researchers and clinicians struggle with creating ways to increase access to care, reach out to potential clients, and engage individuals in therapy services. Nevertheless, therapist engagement and connection with the client can have a significant impact (Sexton, Littauer, Sexton, & Tømmerås, 2005). Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are uniquely trained and …
Disproportionality In Special Education: What Does The Future Hold?, Liana Perez
Disproportionality In Special Education: What Does The Future Hold?, Liana Perez
Special Education Masters Program Theses
This meta-synthesis of the literature on disproportionality of minorities in special education examines the profound effects that inappropriately qualifying and placing culturally and linguistically diverse students into special education programs has on our nation. With the most current data showing the continuous increase of minorities in the US school systems, it is crucial that we develop methods and strategies that will help decrease the disproportionate representation of culturally and linguistically diverse students in our special education programs. It is pertinent that educators and administrators examine their own biases, beliefs, practices and policies to ensure social justice, respect and cultural responsiveness …

Trauma-Informed Practices, Anna Hercha
Special Education Masters Program Theses
This meta-synthesis of the literature on K-8 teachers with disabilities examines the profound influence that teachers can have on students dealing with trauma in their lives. Teachers can add to the students’ frustration and pain or, with understanding and specific techniques, teachers can help students to process the traumatic situations in their lives and advocate for the student in a way that will help retain trust in other people. In this meta-synthesis, these techniques will be examined and discussed through the lens of preparing to work with traumatized students who fall under differing special education categories.

Venezuela's Collapsed Economy And The Resulting Effect On International Business With The United States, Sarah Caldwell
Venezuela's Collapsed Economy And The Resulting Effect On International Business With The United States, Sarah Caldwell
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis explores the current economic and political state of Venezuela, as well as the factors that contributed to the nation’s present challenges. By evaluating current information regarding international relations and international business affiliations, this study investigates and summarizes how Venezuela’s current instability has affected the country’s trade relations with the United States. The research found in this thesis demonstrates that the actions of Venezuela’s government have severely injured international business relations with multi-national firms operating out of the United States.
Developing Interactive Elicitation: Social Desirability Bias And Capturing Play, Matthew Spokes, Jack Denham
Developing Interactive Elicitation: Social Desirability Bias And Capturing Play, Matthew Spokes, Jack Denham
The Qualitative Report
Drawing on research from a mixed-methods project on gaming we argue for a qualitative methodological approach called “interactive elicitation,” a form of data collection that combines elements of photo elicitation, interviewing and vignettes. After situating our broader research project exploring young people’s experiences of violent open-world video games, we outline the process of conducting interactive elicitation, arguing for a mixed-methods approach where participants are observed and interviewed both during and immediately after interacting with particular cultural artefacts, in this case the game GTA V. We reflect on the initial design of the research methodology, the problematic aspects of conducting the …

Religion, Acculturarive Stress And Immigration Generations Among Hispanics In The Texas-Mexico Border: Predictors Of Attitudes Toward Substance Use, Diana Karen Vaquera Santos
Religion, Acculturarive Stress And Immigration Generations Among Hispanics In The Texas-Mexico Border: Predictors Of Attitudes Toward Substance Use, Diana Karen Vaquera Santos
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding Hispanic cultural aspects and their influence on mental health will be crucial to better serve Hispanics (Kouyoumdjian, et al., 2003). Alcohol and drug use disorders have been identified as a major health problem in the U.S. Hispanic population (Vega, Sribney, & Achara-Abrahams, 2003). Regarding substance use, religiosity tends to be a protective factor among Hispanics. Acculturation and acculturative stress have been found as additional factors associated with substance use. Moreover, an individual’s intentions to engage in certain behavior can be defined by their attitudes toward this behavior and their perceived subjective norms regarding such behavior (Lorenzo-Blanco, et al., 2016). …

Loss Of A Sibling: A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Experiences Of School-Aged Children, Barbara Dixon
Loss Of A Sibling: A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Experiences Of School-Aged Children, Barbara Dixon
Dissertations
More than 50,000 child mortalities are recorded in the U.S. each year. As a result, almost 8% of the population experience the loss of a brother or sister before age 25 (Jacobs & Bovasso, 2000). This study was an open conversational exchange with ten Grief Counselors who worked with school-aged children, who had experienced the loss of a sibling, to identify the behaviors and expressions of this group of Disenfranchised Grievers. Three patterns were identified: 1) Grief in children takes different forms, 2) Sibling loss in childhood is a life-changing event and 3) Childhood grief has its own time. Each …

Evaluation Complacency Or Evaluation Inertia? A Study Of Evaluative Metrics And Research Practices In Irish Universities, Lai Ma, Michael Ladisch
Evaluation Complacency Or Evaluation Inertia? A Study Of Evaluative Metrics And Research Practices In Irish Universities, Lai Ma, Michael Ladisch
University Libraries Librarian and Staff Articles and Papers
Evaluative metrics have been used for research assessment in most universities and funding agencies with the assumption that more publications and higher citation counts imply increased productivity and better quality of research. This study investigates the understanding and perceptions of metrics, as well as the influences and implications of the use of evaluative metrics on research practices, including choice of research topics and publication channels, citation behavior, and scholarly communication in Irish universities. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with researchers from the humanities, the social sciences, and the sciences in various career stages. Our findings show that there are conflicting …
