Stressmon: Large Scale Detection Of Stress And Depression In Campus Environment Using Passive Coarse-Grained Location Data, Camellia Zakaria

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The rising mental health illnesses of severe stress and depression is of increasing concern worldwide. Often associated by similarities in symptoms, severe stress can take a toll on a person’s productivity and result in depression if the stress is left unmanaged. Unfortunately, depression can occur without any feelings of stress. With depression growing as a leading cause of disability in economic productivity, there has been a sharp rise in mental health initiatives to improve stress and depression management. To offer such services conveniently and discreetly, recent efforts have focused on using mobile technologies. However, these initiatives usually require users to …

The Need For A Shared Responsibility Regime Between State And Non-State Actors To Prevent Human Rights Violations Caused By Cyber-Surveillance Spyware, Anna W. Chan Jul 2019

The Need For A Shared Responsibility Regime Between State And Non-State Actors To Prevent Human Rights Violations Caused By Cyber-Surveillance Spyware, Anna W. Chan

Brooklyn Journal of International Law

Technology has undoubtedly contributed to the field of human rights. Internet connection and a smartphone has enabled activists to call out political leaders, shine light on human atrocities and organize mass protests through social media platforms. This has resulted in many authoritarian governments spending large amounts of their resources to purchase cyber-surveillance spyware systems from multi-national corporations to closely monitor and track their citizens for any signs of dissidence. Such technology has enabled authoritarian regimes to commit human right violations ranging from invasion of privacy, arbitrary arrest, arbitrary detention, torture and even murder. Despite the uncovering of such questionable transactions …

The Climate Of Opinion In Illinois 2008 - 2019: Gridlock Broken?, John Jackson, Charles Leonard, Shiloh Leah Deitz

The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)

The current report is an extension of the longitudinal data report we provided in an earlier Simon Review based on the 2008 through 2016 polls (Jackson, Leonard, and Deitz, 2016). In major respects the current report is a revision and update to that original paper, continuing and revising our analysis of the political narrative and history in Illinois. That paper was subtitled: The Roots of Gridlock. The 2016 paper reflected the deep polarization and gridlock that had made Illinois a dysfunctional state at that point in its history. The current report extends the analysis by an additional three years, and …

A Study Of The Diffusion Of Innovations And Hurricane Response Communication In The U.S. Coast Guard, Melissa L. Leake Jul 2019

A Study Of The Diffusion Of Innovations And Hurricane Response Communication In The U.S. Coast Guard, Melissa L. Leake

Communication & Theatre Arts Theses

Hurricane Harvey (HH) is considered to be the first natural disaster where social-network applications to request help surpassed already overloaded 911 systems (Seetharaman & Wells, 2017). Increasing interpersonal connectivity via Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites correspond to an increasing need for researchers and responders to recognize how people use social media platforms to connect, share, and receive information especially during times of crisis such as natural disasters. Heightened public perceptions and expectations of response efforts in the digital era make it especially important for first responders to evaluate, monitor, and adapt to these shifts in communication. Disaster-relief groups …

A Public Health Approach To Gun Violence, Legally Speaking, Michael Ulrich Jul 2019

A Public Health Approach To Gun Violence, Legally Speaking, Michael Ulrich

Faculty Scholarship

The call for a public health approach to gun violence has largely ignored what role the nascent Second Amendment jurisprudence will play in hindering change. Given the state interest for infringing on Second Amendment rights is nearly always public safety, public health law doctrine provides an apt framework for analysis.

Comparative Analysis Of Parallel Vs Series Hybrid Electric Powertrains, Ahmed Zia Sheikh Jul 2019

Comparative Analysis Of Parallel Vs Series Hybrid Electric Powertrains, Ahmed Zia Sheikh

Theses

In the United States, more than a quarter of greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions (27%) are attributed to the transportation sector which comprises mainly of vehicles powered by internal combustion engines (ICE). To reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and the resulting GHG emissions associated with conventional ICE vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles are being promoted as a viable near-term vehicle technology. This paper is a comparative experimental study of two types of hybrid systems: parallel (also known as plug-in hybrid) and series (also known as extended-range electric) hybrid systems. The two hybrid systems are modelled on an electric bicycle platform and …

Situational Judgement Selection Test Utility: Implications For Police Turnover, Marshall Alan Jones Jul 2019

Situational Judgement Selection Test Utility: Implications For Police Turnover, Marshall Alan Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Police agencies increasingly find attracting, recruiting, selecting, and retaining police officers challenging. Officer candidates selected can have up to a 25 percent fail rate in basic police training, while probationary officers in field training can fail to complete training with rates as high as 40 percent. Police selection batteries often include situational judgment tests (SJTs) designed to help ensure legal and proper hiring standards. The scores of SJTs, and other selection battery scores, are often filed once the hiring process is complete. This study explored the potential SJT selection battery scores may have in the prediction of field training and …

The Rise And Fall Of The Ku Klux Klan In Oregon During The 1920s, Ben Bruce Jun 2019

The Rise And Fall Of The Ku Klux Klan In Oregon During The 1920s, Ben Bruce

Voces Novae

At the turn of the twentieth century the Ku Klux Klan experienced a major revival in the United States. By the early 1920s, nationwide membership reached over two million. As it grew, the Klan sought new territory in the West to expand into. Being over ninety-five percent white, eighty-five percent native-born and mostly Protestant, the Oregon population was a perfect target for the Klan. Oregon soon became home to one of the country’s largest KKK organizations with over 30,000 sworn members in fifty separate chapters across the state. The Klan in Oregon also printed its own newspaper and had a …

Media Discourses That Normalize Colonial Relations: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of (Im)Migrants And Refugees, Meng Zhao, Jorge Rodriguez, Lilia D. Monzó Jun 2019

Media Discourses That Normalize Colonial Relations: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of (Im)Migrants And Refugees, Meng Zhao, Jorge Rodriguez, Lilia D. Monzó

Education Faculty Articles and Research

The im(migration) and refugee crisis that are being exacerbated under the Trump administration, is a manifestation of empire-building and the long history of colonization of the Global South. A Marxist-humanist perspective recognizes these as consistent aspects of a clearly racist global capitalism that functions in the interest of multibillion dollar U.S.–based corporations and increasingly transnational corporations. Trade agreements, international economic policy, political intervention, invasion or the threat of these, often secure corporate interests in specific countries and regions. The authors use critical discourse analysis to examine the discourses around Mexican, Central American, and Syrian im(migrants) and refugees as examples of …

Forensic Cell Site Analysis: Mobile Network Operator Evidence Integrity Maintenance Research, John B. Minor Jun 2019

Forensic Cell Site Analysis: Mobile Network Operator Evidence Integrity Maintenance Research, John B. Minor

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Mobile Network Operator (MNO) and Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) evidence have become an important evidentiary focus in the courtroom. This type of evidence is routinely produced as business records under U.S. Federal Rules of Evidence for use in the emerging discipline of Forensic Cell Site Analysis. The research was undertaken to determine if evidence produced by operators should be classified as digital evidence and, if so, what evidence handling methodologies are appropriate to ensure evidence integrity. This research project resulted in the creation of a method of determining if business records produced by MNO/MVNO organizations are digital evidence and …

The Role Of The Community Health Delivery System In The Health And Well-Being Of Justice-Involved Women: A Narrative Review, Sharla A. Smith, Glen P. Mays, Tracie C. Collins, Megha Ramaswamy Jun 2019

The Role Of The Community Health Delivery System In The Health And Well-Being Of Justice-Involved Women: A Narrative Review, Sharla A. Smith, Glen P. Mays, Tracie C. Collins, Megha Ramaswamy

Health Management and Policy Faculty Publications

Background: Over seven million imprisoned and jailed women are released into the community each year and many are ill-equipped to meet the challenges of re-integration. Upon release into their community, women are faced with uncertain barriers and challenges using community services to improve their health and well-being and reuniting with families. Few studies have identified and described the barriers of the community health delivery system (CHDS)- a complex set of social, justice, and healthcare organizations that provide community services aimed to improve the health and well-being (i.e. safety, health, the success of integration, and life satisfaction) of justice-involved women. We …

Spatial Analysis Of Burglary And Robbery Crime Concentration Near Mass-Transit In Portland, Bryce Edward Barthuly Jun 2019

Spatial Analysis Of Burglary And Robbery Crime Concentration Near Mass-Transit In Portland, Bryce Edward Barthuly

Dissertations and Theses

The relationship between mass-transit and the concentration of burglary and robbery crimes is inconsistent within the available literature in environmental criminology. A number of studies have provided evidence of crime concentration at and near mass transit locations where paths intersect, referred to as a node. These empirical studies bring in environmental criminology theory with the idea that crime is clustered, and the pattern of the concentrations is substantially influenced by how and why people travel and move in a city. It is suggested that public transit allows for a large proportion of the population to move around the community along …

Alaska Trial Court Caseload Fy 2007–2018, Yevgenii Kisarauskas

AJiC Fact Sheets

This fact sheet presents data on criminal case filings in Alaska trial courts for fiscal years 2007–2018. From FY07 to FY18, misdemeanors filed in Alaska trial courts decreased while felonies filed increased. The majority of the increase in total felony filings came from violent, property, and weapons cases. The majority of the decline in district court cases is due to declining filings in public order, DUI, and other motor vehicle cases. Data are drawn from annual reports of the Alaska Court System.

Juvenile Risk Assessment: Assessing The Evaluability And Predictive Validity Of The Youth Assessment And Screening Instrument For Use Among The North Dakota Juvenile Probation Population, Adam K. Matz, Adrian R. Martinez Jun 2019

Juvenile Risk Assessment: Assessing The Evaluability And Predictive Validity Of The Youth Assessment And Screening Instrument For Use Among The North Dakota Juvenile Probation Population, Adam K. Matz, Adrian R. Martinez

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Risk assessment using an actuarial instrument represents one of eight core evidence-based practices (EBP) in community supervision recognized by the National Institute of Corrections (NIC). Despite the widespread adoption of a variety of instruments, many jurisdictions have not assessed their predictive validity. This research examines the evaluability of a risk assessment instrument, the Youth Assessment & Screening Instrument (YASI), adopted by the North Dakota Juvenile Court. The instrument has been in use since 2002. While studies of the YASI from New York State, Illinois, and Canada provide some confidence in the instrument's predictive accuracy, questions still remain concerning its applicability …
