Perceptions Of Safety Within The Bridgewater State University Community, Stephen M. Sinko
Master’s Theses and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative research study was to examine administration, faculty, staff, and student’s perceptions of safety within a large university community in the American Northeast. Previous research has been done at other educational institutions primarily in the American South and West, but research such as this has been limited in the Northeastern area of the United States. An online survey was sent using a combination of convenient and snowball sampling. Participants in this survey include administration, faculty, staff, and students from the campus community. Results suggest that individuals who took this survey felt moderately safe while on campus. …

Differences Between Occupational And Non-Occupational-Related Motor Vehicle Collisions In West Virginia: A Cross-Sectional And Spatial Analysis, Toni Marie Rudisill
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Background
Motor vehicle collisions comprise the majority of occupational-related fatalities in the United States and West Virginia has one of the highest occupational-related fatality rates in the nation. The purpose of this study was to compare work and non-work-related collisions, crash locations, and the characteristics of in-state and out-of-state drivers ≥18 years of age who were fatally injured in work-related collisions in West Virginia.
Methodology
Data were from the 2000–2017 Fatality Analysis Reporting System. Work and non-work-related crashes and characteristics in-state vs. out-of-state drivers were compared using binary and multivariable logistic regression analyses. Crash locations were compared via spatial analyses …

Planning Emergency Shelters For Urban Disasters: A Multi-Level Location–Allocation Modeling Approach, Yijun Shi, Guofang Zhai, Lihua Xu, Quan Zhu, Jinyang Deng
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
In recent years, cities are threatened by various natural hazards. Planning emergency shelters in advance is an effective approach to reducing the damage caused by disasters and ensuring the safety of residents. Thus, providing the optimal layout of urban emergency shelters is an important stage of disaster management and an act of humanitarian logistics. In order to study the optimal layout of emergency shelters in small mountain cities, this paper constructs multi-level location models for different grades of emergency shelters so as to minimize the travel and construction costs and maximize the coverage rate. Specifically, the actual service of emergency …

Why She Didn't Just Leave: The Effect Of Nuisance Ordinances On Domestic Violence, Emily Moss
Why She Didn't Just Leave: The Effect Of Nuisance Ordinances On Domestic Violence, Emily Moss
Honors Thesis Collection
Municipalities throughout the country have adopted nuisance ordinances to recruit landlords in assisting with crime control. Nuisance ordinances are municipality-level policies that sanction landlords if police are frequently called to respond to a landlord’s tenants. To avoid a fine, landlords must abate tenants whose conduct was considered a nuisance under the municipality’s ordinance; most often, this abatement process involves evicting the tenant. Little research has evaluated the impact of nuisance ordinances on innocent tenants – particularly, female victims of domestic violence. Because domestic violence is seldom excluded from the list of nuisance activities considered under the ordinances, legal advocates have …

Chemical Regulations And The Effect On Manufacturers, Dustin Smith
Chemical Regulations And The Effect On Manufacturers, Dustin Smith
Integrated Studies
This paper examines two major regulatory systems chemists and chemical manufacturers must deal with on a day-to-day basis. There are dozens of different sets of regulations that affect the chemical industry throughout the world. Many countries have their own specific rules that govern the chemicals manufactured or imported inside their borders. Specifically, this paper will examine the rise of the European Union’s REACH system, the failure and reform of the United States’ TSCA and finally, the effects these two systems have upon each other.
Opioid Epidemic, Amy Ford
Opioid Epidemic, Amy Ford
Integrated Studies
Most narcotics and non-synthetic drugs have medicinal values that have helped in treating various conditions in medical practice. Opium is a typical plant that has proved remarkable medicinal values. Opium extracts (opioids) are the most effective analgesics available for tackling pains. Unfortunately, while healthcare and pharmaceuticals exploited the health benefits of the substance, its dirty aspect (addiction) unveiled. As people developed dependence, the pharmaceutical players involved in opioids production increased quantities and enticed medical practitioners to increase prescriptions for the opioid-based painkillers. Consequently, the addiction grew, and healed patients continued the use that has led to widespread overdose and deaths. …
National Service Works: A Review Of Federally Administered National Service Programs, Caitlin Szabo
National Service Works: A Review Of Federally Administered National Service Programs, Caitlin Szabo
Integrated Studies
National service in the United States permeates through most communities. Despite a significant number of participants, national service programs like AmeriCorps and Senior Corps are relatively unknown. People understand the concept of the Peace Corps – programs may refer to their AmeriCorps model as the “domestic version of the Peace Corps." National service programs engage individuals in providing services to their communities in exchange for intrinsic and extrinsic rewards. Individuals ranging from 18 to 99 join national service programs for a number of reasons, including a desire to “give back” or “make a difference.” People also find national service as …

The Importance Of Immunizations In School-Aged Children, Cortney D. Stutzman Lpn
Integrated Studies
This paper identifies in detail the importance of vaccinations, focusing primarily on the category of school-aged children. All 12 vaccines are discussed individually, recognizing the disease/diseases they are protecting against, benefits of the vaccine, how and to whom the vaccine is administered, contraindications for the immunization, and risks associated with each vaccination. The information used in this project is from a combination of scholarly peer-reviewed journal articles, medical texts, and information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It addresses all regulated childhood vaccinations including hepatitis B (Hep B); haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib); diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis …

Objectives Cellphone use behaviours can vary demographically in the USA. Implementing Educational Courses On Social Media Within Prisons To Decrease Unemployment Rates Among Ex-Prisoners And Reduce Recidivism In The United States, Shannon Hernandez
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This paper focuses on whether or not it would be beneficial to implement educational courses on social media within prisons in order to prepare prisoners for release, improve post-release unemployment rates, and improve recidivism rates in the United States. Since the early 1990s, technology has grown to a point where it has become a part of everyone’s daily life, which includes social media platforms (Greenstein, 2012). While society has adapted to these advancements, prisoners who have been removed from society for many years are unable to achieve the same levels of social media comprehension, which can cause disparity between their …
