Pathways From Cumulative Adversity To Self-Regulation And Early Student-Teacher Relationships: Identifying A Need For Trauma-Informed Preschools, Alysse Loomis Apr 2019

Pathways From Cumulative Adversity To Self-Regulation And Early Student-Teacher Relationships: Identifying A Need For Trauma-Informed Preschools, Alysse Loomis

Doctoral Dissertations

The preschool setting is a natural system of care that can be leveraged to mitigate the effects of childhood adversity, such as maltreatment and violence exposure. However, school-based trauma-informed supports for preschoolers lag behind those for older children, this despite the fact that young children, and particularly low-income children in urban areas, are exposed to disproportionate rates of adversity. This body of work examines the impact of cumulative adversity on children within the preschool context and makes recommendations to aid in the development of trauma-informed preschool models. This is done through one conceptual paper and two empirical papers, derived from …

An Agent-Based Evacuation Model To Improve Safety In The Cascadia Subduction Zone, Haizhong Wang Apr 2019

An Agent-Based Evacuation Model To Improve Safety In The Cascadia Subduction Zone, Haizhong Wang

PSU Transportation Seminars

This seminar will present ongoing research into how integrated social, natural, and engineered systems can improve life safety under threat of multi-hazards. The targeted scenario is a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami from the Cascadia Subduction Zone, threatening communities along 1,000 miles of the US Pacific Northwest coastline.

Since the mid-1980’s scientific evidence has underscored the possibility of such an extreme event, and it has taken at least another decade or more before public attitudes and policy have begun to adapt to this new hazard. Life safety is a pressing issue for the near-field CSZ tsunami hazard for several reasons. …

Assessing The Effects Of Culling As A Management Tool For Urban Mule Deer Populations, Hamilton Q. Platt Apr 2019

Assessing The Effects Of Culling As A Management Tool For Urban Mule Deer Populations, Hamilton Q. Platt

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Cities and towns are expanding across the western United States into historic areas of wildlife habitat. Many species such as white-tailed deer, mule deer, and even elk are adapting to effectively live alongside humans in urban areas. However, animals and humans living in close proximity often creates problems with public safety as animals can become aggressive to people or damage property. Our study looks at how the City of Helena, Montana is managing a population of overabundant urban mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) using culling in order to reduce population density. We used distance sampling data to determine that the population …

The 'Will Of The Voters': Examining Trends In Legislative Repeal Of State Ballot Initiatives, John Cronin Apr 2019

The 'Will Of The Voters': Examining Trends In Legislative Repeal Of State Ballot Initiatives, John Cronin

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Direct democracy plays a significant role in 24 states across the country. The process of allowing the public to gather signatures, place an issue on the ballot, and then approve it represents the purest form of democracy and provides the ultimate check on unresponsive legislatures. However, in some cases ballot initiatives are repealed by state legislatures after being approved by voters. This research paper asks the following question: are there identifiable trends to the legislative repealing of direct ballot initiatives after they have been approved by the majority of the voting public? After considering past arguments and history surrounding initiatives, …

Stories Matter: Reaffirming The Value Of Qualitative Research, Samantha Mcaleese, Jennifer M. Kilty Apr 2019

Stories Matter: Reaffirming The Value Of Qualitative Research, Samantha Mcaleese, Jennifer M. Kilty

The Qualitative Report

While the social sciences are experiencing narrative and emotional turns that are largely based on exploratory and theoretical qualitative research, the problematic dismissal of qualitative research approaches continues to loom large outside academia. Frequently described as a collection of “anecdotal stories,” qualitative research is dismissed as unscientific and unreliable— comments that limit the perceived usefulness of qualitative findings, especially in terms of policy reform. This article problematizes evaluating qualitative research according to quantitative measures of rigour and explores the richness and value of documenting experiential stories and the process of storying in social science research. Notably, we take up the …

The Concrete Jungle: Where Dreams Are Made Of . . . And Now Where Children Are Protected, Samantha A. Mumola Apr 2019

The Concrete Jungle: Where Dreams Are Made Of . . . And Now Where Children Are Protected, Samantha A. Mumola

Pace Law Review

The tragic and unsettling story of Kalief Browder has notably emerged as a prominent illustration of our criminal justice system’s historical failure to protect our youth. Kalief’s story gained massive media attention with the help of a TIME documentary series featured on Netflix and famous A-listers such as music artist Jay-Z and TV host Rosie O’Donnell. It is hard to ignore the fact that Kalief Browder was cheated by the system; he chose suicide to escape his demons, which developed after undeserved time spent at Riker’s – a place he would have never experienced had he initially been tried as …

Child Fatality Review Boards: Increasing Collaboration In Rural America, Rebecca Gomez, Max Veltman Apr 2019

Child Fatality Review Boards: Increasing Collaboration In Rural America, Rebecca Gomez, Max Veltman

2019 Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Conference

The purpose of this project is to assist a rural county in Idaho with streamlining and updating their child fatality review process to better align with national standards. Child fatality review (CFR) teams exist to review suspicious child deaths involving abuse and/or neglect or to help identify public safety hazards. Although several statewide reports have been published in Idaho, there remains a significant gap in data that can be useful for local (county level) efforts to prevent child fatality. A new process is underway for analysis of pediatric fatalities in 2016 and 2017. In addition to the analysis, the report …

The Impact Of State Fiscal Policy On States' Resilience Entering The Great Recession, Kathy A. Paulson Gjerde, Peter Prescott, Jennifer Rice Apr 2019

The Impact Of State Fiscal Policy On States' Resilience Entering The Great Recession, Kathy A. Paulson Gjerde, Peter Prescott, Jennifer Rice

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

The U.S. economy entered the Great Recession in December 2007 and exited in June 2009. This national statistic obscures a wealth of state-level data shedding light on the policies and conditions that helped some states withstand that recessionary shock for a time. In this study, we used that state-level data in a parametric regression model, known as survival analysis, to estimate the effects that a state’s fiscal policy had on the timing of its entry into the Great Recession. Consistent with earlier, more general, studies focusing on economic growth, we found that taxes have the potential to hasten the start …

Why Rape Should Be A Federal Crime, Donald A. Dripps Apr 2019

Why Rape Should Be A Federal Crime, Donald A. Dripps

William & Mary Law Review

Sexual assault remains at high levels despite decades of legal reforms. The recent wave of accusations against public figures signals both the persistence of the problem and a new political climate for addressing it. The Article argues that Congress should make forcible rape a federal crime, to the limits of the Commerce Clause. This would bring federal assets to the fight against rape by redirecting them from enforcement of possessory crimes. The simple statutory proposal might be accompanied by a more ambitious reorganization of the Justice Department to include a Bureau of Violent Crimes. Replies are offered to objections based …

The project I would like to present is the GIS project I did for Dr. Boston on the Don Carlos archaeology site in Moniteau County, Missouri. The presentation would consist of a few aerial photos of the site, as well as a plat map from the 1930s, and a topographic map from around the mid-1980s; all of which have a GIS’d outline of individual parts of the site. I will then explain the items used to map the entire site, as well as some of the items that were discovered, why they are of important to the site and the …
