Psychology Faculty Works
A great deal of interest concerns the study of vigilance performance and trust in automation due to their implications for public safety. The present work contributes to this literature by providing an experimental resource for scholars in need of a vigilance style task. We created a set of 150 stimuli that may be downloaded and used by researchers in future data collections. These stimuli are X-ray images of luggage, and participants indicate whether or not they believe each image contains a dangerous item (simulating airport security screening). Using a sample of 990 adults recruited via MTurk, we normed these items …

Development Of A Behavioral Health Response Team, Aimee Black, Lyndsi Hall, Helen Jackson
Development Of A Behavioral Health Response Team, Aimee Black, Lyndsi Hall, Helen Jackson
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
Development of a Behavioral Health Response Team Background Description Managing behavioral health issues in the acute care hospital setting can be challenging. Acute care units often admit patients for medical reasons but patients many times also have a coexisting diagnosis of mental illness, substance abuse or dementia/delirium. These diagnoses are at times difficult for nurses to manage outside of the inpatient psychiatric setting and often interfere with the care of patient's with acute medical conditions. Managing this patient population without the appropriate resources may have a negative impact on the nursing practice environment. Nurses in the acute care setting at …

Charicteristics Of Total Institutions In The Merry Pranksters And Augsburg College: A Goffmanian Analysis, Matt Dunn
Augsburg Honors Review
Ken Kesey's classic novel One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest recounts the experiences of R.P. McMurphy, a criminal sentenced to time in a mental hospital. Kesey's illustration of the mental hospital provides the stereotypical view of "institutions." However, many other areas of life go unnoticed as institutions, such as schools or even families or close-knit groups of friends. Despite general unawareness of the extent of institutions, institutions have direct consequences for the identities of individuals that exist within them. In this analysis I will first outline Goffman's theory of total institutions focusing on the general characteristics of total institutions, the …

Oil Politics And Land Tenure Changes In Uganda: Understanding The Curse Of Dispossession In The Albertine Region, Niringiyimana Julius, Muhumuza William, Murindwa Rutanga
African Social Science Review
Although oil wealth has been applauded for being a sine qua non for development because of its profitability, its lucrativeness to global capitalism has empowered global powers and increased marginalization and poverty in the Oil Village Communities (OVCs) of developing countries. The thrust of this study was to analyze different ways oil politics influences land tenure changes and alienation of local citizens’ land rights through the process of land dispossession in Uganda’s Albertine region. Anchored within accumulation by dispossession discourse, the study used qualitative approach and employed in-depth interviews, focused group discussions, observations and documentary reviews as data collection instruments. …

Police Officers Killed Or Assaulted In The Line Of Duty From 1998 To 2015, Kacie Smith
Police Officers Killed Or Assaulted In The Line Of Duty From 1998 To 2015, Kacie Smith
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
This project will test five variables that could influence the rate of police officers killed or assaulted in the line of duty from 1998 to 2015. These variables include the population per square mile, vacant housing, unemployment rate, percentage of high school graduates, and percentage of poverty rate. The information for the variables and the cases will be from the years of 1998 to 2015, and it will include officers who have been killed or assaulted while they are working.
This project will be analyzing these variables to determine if there is a correlation between one of the variables and …
Electrification Of Monroe County’S Vehicle Fleet: A Cost Benefit Analysis, Jordan Kirkpatrick
Electrification Of Monroe County’S Vehicle Fleet: A Cost Benefit Analysis, Jordan Kirkpatrick
Theses
This analysis determines the financial and environmental value in electrifying the vehicle fleet owned and operated by Monroe County, New York. Due to economies of scale, the capital cost of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (PHEVs), and Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) have dropped to a point that regardless of environmental benefits, these vehicles can be cost effective in their own right. Monroe County has consistent turnover in its fleet anyway, replacing older vehicles with new ones.
I conducted a cost benefit analysis of converting Monroe County’s vehicle fleet to electric alternatives in order to maximize financial value. To …

Human Dimensions Of Roadside Vegetation Management Across The Connecticut Landscape, Daniel Connor Hale
Human Dimensions Of Roadside Vegetation Management Across The Connecticut Landscape, Daniel Connor Hale
Master's Theses
Context For the roadside forest, utility vegetation management is a driver of landscape change that involves tradeoffs between reliable electric power and preservation of trees. Little is known about public perceptions of vegetation management in the landscape context.
Objectives Our objective was to evaluate landscape characteristics and social factors associated with resident attitudes toward roadside utility vegetation management across Connecticut.
Methods We used a mail survey to collect social science data from residents in two study areas in Connecticut. We measured landscape characteristics associated with tree cover and development density at multiple scales around each respondent household. Random forest predictive …

Lower-Body Power And Its Relationship With Body Drag Velocity In Law Enforcement Recruits, Matthew R. Moreno, Joseph M. Dulla, J. Jay Dawes, Robin (Rob) Marc Orr, Karly Cesario, Robert G. Lockie
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(4): 847-858, 2019. The body drag (BD) is used as a test to measure a law enforcement officer (LEO) recruit’s capability to rescue an individual. However, the physical characteristics associated with faster BD performance have not been identified. It could be expected that lower- body power, often measured via jump performance, could positively relate to BD performance. This study investigated the relationship between the vertical jump (VJ), peak anaerobic power measured in watts (PAPw), power-to-body mass ratio (P:BM), standing broad jump (SBJ), and relative SBJ, with BD velocity in LEO recruits. Retrospective analysis of data …

Title Ix And The Responsibility Of Leadership In Collegiate Athletics, Regan J. Mccomb, Chelsea Kaunert
Title Ix And The Responsibility Of Leadership In Collegiate Athletics, Regan J. Mccomb, Chelsea Kaunert
Honors Theses
Typically, when we hear about Title IX, we think of scholarship dollars, ratio of men’s and women’s sports, and equal funding, but in the past several years we have seen a shift in focus to sexual misconduct. Studies have repeatedly shown that sexual assault rates on college campuses are not on the decline. With one in five college students graduating a victim of sexual misconduct, we must now demand more of those we consider leadership in the university setting. Recently we have seen a trend of prominent women, including female athletes, speaking out about their experience with sexual assault. We …
President Lincoln: Bending The Iron And Cracking The Code, Samuel Hall
President Lincoln: Bending The Iron And Cracking The Code, Samuel Hall
Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive
This article explores the constitutionality of President Lincoln’s actions during the Civil War and poses the question of whether Lincoln taking possession of the railroads and telegraph companies during the Civil War was constitutional. The answer to this was, Lincoln’s actions were, in fact, constitutional because Congress expressly authorized his actions. His taking possession of the railroads and telegraph companies provided compensation to the companies affected. Further, the article analyzes the constitutional and congressional authority for allowing President Lincoln to take possession and provide compensation. The article also addresses the history of the Presidential “Commander-in-Chief” powers, prior to and contemporaneous …
Silencing “Sedition”: How Abraham Lincoln And John Adams Desecrated The Constitution To Combat Public Reprimand, Jordan Newport
Silencing “Sedition”: How Abraham Lincoln And John Adams Desecrated The Constitution To Combat Public Reprimand, Jordan Newport
Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive
Throughout history, principally during actual or feared times of war, the United States government has seemingly interpreted the First Amendment to the United States Constitution as a mere suggestion and not as the “Supreme Law of the Land.” This has led to well-documented difficulties related to infringement upon individuals’ Constitutional rights. In this article, the governmental action taken to combat “sedition” in two distinct periods of American History will be addressed. I suggest that while people attack Lincoln for suspending habeas corpus, thus providing a gateway to Constitutional violations, this is just another act throughout the course of history in …

This is the third of six updates presenting interim findings from the evaluation of the NYC Mayor’s Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety (MAP). As part of an evaluation of the New York City Mayor’s Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety (MAP), researchers from John Jay College of Criminal Justice collaborated with survey specialists from NORC at the University of Chicago to track key outcomes in MAP developments and matched comparison sites. Using the NYC Open Data portal and data from NYPD and SPARCS, the research team looked to see if the presence of MAP showed initial impacts in crime and victimization …

The Perceptions Of African American Female High-Needs Students Regarding The Impact Of The Disciplinary System In Low-Performing Schools In Arkansas, Renata Danielle Bryant
Theses and Dissertations from 2019
The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate why African American female students are being “pushed out” of learning environments in public schools. This study attempted to answer the central question: According to the “lived experiences” of African – American female students in Arkansas, what are the perceived factors contributing to the disproportionate number of African American female students receiving serious disciplinary consequences in public schools? Eleven African American female students associated with three school districts in Eastern Arkansas fit the following criteria: student in grades 10-12; a female student; self – identified as being African-American; received education in …
