Killing Silence: A Path To Increasing Homicide Solvability In Urban Communities, Dennis Thornton
Killing Silence: A Path To Increasing Homicide Solvability In Urban Communities, Dennis Thornton
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Relatively low rates of homicide solvability results in law-abiding citizens being forced to co-exist with known murderers, which is detrimental to a community’s psyche. This condition happens disproportionately in neighborhoods where crime is high, cohesiveness among its members is weak, and the citizen/police relationship is little or non-existent. This research sought to understand this phenomenon by asking,” How can murder solvability rates improve in marginalized communities?” and employing four theoretical lenses. Using the city of New Orleans as a case study and holding Social Disorganization Theory constant, Spiral of Silence, Habitus, and Dramaturgy were utilized in an attempt to understand …
Funding Mental Healthcare In The Wake Of Deinstitutionalization: How The United States And The United Kingdom Diverged In Mental Health Policy After Deinstitutionalization, And What We Can Learn From Their Differing Approaches To Funding Mental Healthcare, Catherine Ryan Gawron
Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law
Deinstitutionalization was a mass movement away from institutional-focused mental healthcare in the mid-to-late twentieth century, which changed the dynamic of mental healthcare service provision in both the United States and United Kingdom. This Note analyzes the history and effects of deinstitutionalization on subsequent mental healthcare policy in those two nations, highlighting the key role of funding in shaping the success of mental health policy and programming.
The focus on mental healthcare funding structures provides a lens to analyze the differences in financial funding, resource allocation, infrastructure development of community-based or alternative care services, and government and social support of mental …
Crumpled And Abraded Encryption: Implementation And Provably Secure Construction, Scott Sherlock Griffy
Crumpled And Abraded Encryption: Implementation And Provably Secure Construction, Scott Sherlock Griffy
Dissertations and Theses
Abraded and crumpled encryption allows communication software such as messaging platforms to ensure privacy for their users while still allowing for some investigation by law enforcement. Crumpled encryption ensures that each decryption is costly and prevents law enforcement from performing mass decryption of messages. Abrasion ensures that only large organizations like law enforcement are able to access any messages. The current abrasion construction uses public key parameters such as prime numbers which makes the abrasion scheme difficult to analyze and allows possible backdoors. In this thesis, we introduce a new abrasion construction which uses hash functions to avoid the problems …
Alternative Water Supplies For Arid Areas, Jumaan Alghamdi
Alternative Water Supplies For Arid Areas, Jumaan Alghamdi
NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations
Water is an essential component of growth and life; unfortunately, many countries face growing challenges in providing safe water. This has created a need for alternatives in the ways water can be treated, saved, or reused. In this paper, four alternative water supplies are reviewed: desalination, grey water reuse, harvesting of rainwater, and harvesting of stormwater. These alternatives are examined in terms of their advantages and disadvantages, the waste by-products, other pollution that can be produced by them, and how to handle each one. To accomplish this, brief information about each alternative, what technologies are used for water treatment, and …

Private Prisons & Human Rights: Examining Israel's Ban On Private Prisons In A Us Context, Brandy F. Henry
Private Prisons & Human Rights: Examining Israel's Ban On Private Prisons In A Us Context, Brandy F. Henry
Concordia Law Review
This article users a human rights lens to examine prison privatization in the US. The analysis builds on the 2009 Israeli Supreme Court ruling against the privatization of prisons, which relied on the human rights theories of both decommodification and dignity. The Israeli interpretations of dignity, and decommodification theory as related to the privatization of prisons suggest that prison privatization results in the commodification of both the state and prisoner, through the improper delegation of governmental power, which results in an infringement of the prisoner's human right to dignity. This argument is examined in the context of US statute and …
The Consummate Legal Education: Teaching Analysis As Doctrine, Julie Ann Interdonato
The Consummate Legal Education: Teaching Analysis As Doctrine, Julie Ann Interdonato
Concordia Law Review
This paper addresses the necessity and means of developing analysis and its written expression as an independent topic of study throughout students’ law school tenure. “Doctrine,” as it appears in the above title, is defined as the transcendent analytic concepts that underlie the common law, and the modality of their application in the law’s constant evolution. The purpose of presenting analysis in this context is to enhance analytic instruction presently provided in law school, and thereby take students one step further in their education, into the realm of the practicing attorney. In this manner, educators, building on the case law …
Criminally Homeless? The Eighth Amendment Prohibition Against Penalizing Status, Tim Donaldson
Criminally Homeless? The Eighth Amendment Prohibition Against Penalizing Status, Tim Donaldson
Concordia Law Review
The article examines the extent to which the Cruel and Unusual Punishments Clause of the Eighth Amendment protects the ability of homeless persons to subsist in public places. It reviews Martin v. City of Boise and how the Eighth Amendment has been applied to test the constitutionality of local laws targeted at the homeless. It discusses whether homelessness constitutes a recognizable status protected by the Eighth Amendment, and, if so, whether protection is extended to unavoidable conduct resulting from that status.

“I Am Not My Illness!”: Navigating The Mental Healthcare System In New Orleans, Saira Mehmood
Anthropology Theses and Dissertations
This research examines the experiences of individuals diagnosed with chronic mental illnesses and how they navigated the mental healthcare system in New Orleans, Louisiana. To realize the main research objective, I analyzed how individuals with chronic mental illnesses perceive mental illness and stigma; the services individuals use to address their mental health needs and the barriers they face in this process; who individuals disclose their mental illness to and under what contexts; and how individuals diagnosed with mental illness and their caregivers understand and embody recovery. Situated between medical anthropology and urban anthropology, it examines the challenges individuals diagnosed with …
Pieces Of Place: Finding Meaning Through The Material And Process Of Artisanal Craft In Central Mexico, Eliza S. Homer
Pieces Of Place: Finding Meaning Through The Material And Process Of Artisanal Craft In Central Mexico, Eliza S. Homer
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
The research in this study focused on how storytelling through artmaking, specifically, narrative embroidered story cloths (tela bordada) has been used traditionally in rural Central Mexico. The study explored place-based identities and traditions embedded in the culture, and examined how these processes could potentially be incorporated into art therapy practice in these communities. The research question, “What is the experience of engagement in tela bordada?” illuminated the meaning of Indigenous theory and expanded the import of the experience of the material and process. This led to the discovery of finding meaning explicit in the participants’ experiences and implicit …

Tamper-Proof Weapons And Components Identifications And Diagnosis With Active Radiation
Defensive Publications Series
Convergence and increased complexity has made tracking components and inventory, especially high value or security risks an increasingly large scale, distributed challenge for: federal, state, and local government agencies, industries, municipal operations centers (airports, docks, etc.) and other large public concerns. Lifecycle management includes component stress analysis and overall health. The methods hereby address the detection, identification and integrity of movable components in a tamper-proof manner. The selection of radioactive materials, radioactive lifecycle, their density and material insertion, and uniformity in insertion during manufacturing determine the type process in identification. A receiver sensor may be built upon geiger counter methods …

Cybersecurity For Critical Infrastructure: Addressing Threats And Vulnerabilities In Canada, Samuel A. Cohen
Cybersecurity For Critical Infrastructure: Addressing Threats And Vulnerabilities In Canada, Samuel A. Cohen
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The aim of this thesis is to assess the unique technical and policy-based cybersecurity challenges facing Canada’s critical infrastructure environment and to analyze how current government and industry practices are not equipped to remediate or offset associated strategic risks to the country. Further, the thesis also provides cases and evidence demonstrating that Canada’s critical infrastructure has been specifically targeted by foreign and domestic cyber threat actors to pressure the country’s economic, safety and national security interests. Essential services that Canadians and Canadian businesses rely on daily are intricately linked to the availability and integrity of vital infrastructure sectors, such as …

Numerical Simulation Of Thermo-Mechanical Behavior Of Gypsum Board Wall Assembly, Zhili Quan
Numerical Simulation Of Thermo-Mechanical Behavior Of Gypsum Board Wall Assembly, Zhili Quan
Engineering
Fire safety has become a significant concern to public safety; especially in the aftermath of 9/11 attack where, according to official reports, three World Trade Center buildings collapsed because of fire. Therefore, the level of thermal insulation required from building material and structural elements has increased. In recent years, gypsum board wall assemblies have been increasingly used as compartmentation for high-rise residential and commercial buildings. The increasing popularity of gypsum board wall assemblies is due to their relatively high strength-to-weight ratio, ease of prefabrication, fast erection and good thermal insulation. Before implementation of any building material or structural element, its …
The Relationship Between Substance Abuse, Intimate Partner Violence And Sexual Assault In College Students, Erin K. Deotte
The Relationship Between Substance Abuse, Intimate Partner Violence And Sexual Assault In College Students, Erin K. Deotte
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Numerous studies demonstrate linkages between substance abuse, intimate partner violence (IPV), and/or sexual assault (e.g., Nabors, 2009; Rivera, Phillips, Warshaw, Lyon, Bland, & Kaewken, 2015; Santana, Raj, Decker, & Silverman, 2006). For ages, college students have been associated with substance abuse (e.g., Hingson, Zha, and Weitzman, 2009; O’Malley & Johnston, 2002). Substance abuse has been associated with IPV and sexual assault (Nabors, 2009; Rivera, Phillips, Warshaw, Lyon, Bland, & Kaewken, 2015; Santana, Raj, Decker, & Silverman, 2006). Although much research has been conducted on the relationships between substance abuse and intimate partner violence (including sexual violence), little research has been …

Human-Bear Interactions In The North Slope Oilfields Of Alaska (Usa): Characteristics Of Grizzly Bear Sightings And Use Of Infrared For Bear Den Detection, Nils J. Pedersen
Biological Sciences
Minimizing unsafe human-bear (Ursus spp.) interactions in the North Slope oilfields of Alaska (USA) requires knowledge of where they occur and methods to prevent them. My research goals were to characterize the spatial and temporal dynamics of grizzly bear (U. arctos) sightings during the non-denning season around industrial infrastructure in the North Slope oilfields over the past 25 years (Chapter 2), and to evaluate the efficacy of forward-looking infrared (FLIR) systems to detect grizzly bears and polar bears (U. maritimus) in their winter dens (Chapter 3). I used reports (n = 2,453) of summer grizzly bear sightings collected by oilfield …

Iot Forensics Curriculum: Is It A Myth Or Reality?, Bilge Karabacak, Kemal Aydin, Andy Igonor
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
In this research paper, two questions are answered. The first question is "Should universities invest in the preparation of an IoT forensics curriculum?". The second question is "If the IoT forensics curriculum is worth investing in, what are the basic building steps in the development of an loT forensics curriculum?". To answer those questions, the authors conducted a comprehensive literature review spanning academia, the private sector, and non-profit organizations. The authors also performed semi-structured interviews with two experts from academia and the private sector. The results showed that because of the proliferation of IoT technology and the increasing number of …
