Effects Of Electromagnetic Hydrolysis On Dissolved Oxygen In Small Ponds, Matthew Iles Jan 2019

Effects Of Electromagnetic Hydrolysis On Dissolved Oxygen In Small Ponds, Matthew Iles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This pilot study was conducted to determine if an Electron Magnetics Oxygen and Hydrogen (EMOH) device can increase the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration of a residential surface water. By using EMOH, DO concentration will increase and allow bacteria to remove the substrate that creates blue-green algae for which the City of Boynton Beach (City) receives complaints. Those complaints center on odors and the visual appearance of the ponds. The study was conducted in-situ at the INCA Pond system in the City of Boynton Beach, Florida with data collection taking place bi-weekly, using surface aeration techniques. Water sampling was conducted in …

Diffeomorphism Invariant Cosmological Sector In Loop Quantum Gravity, Phillip Mendonca Jan 2019

Diffeomorphism Invariant Cosmological Sector In Loop Quantum Gravity, Phillip Mendonca

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

1In this dissertation we work out in detail a new proposal to define rigorously a sector of loop quantum gravity at the diffeomorphism invariant level corresponding to homogeneous and isotropic cosmologies, and propose how to compare in detail the physics of this sector with that of loop quantum cosmology. The key technical steps we have completed are (a) to formulate conditions for homogeneity and isotropy in a diffeomorphism covariant way on the classical phase space of general relativity, and (b) to translate these conditions consistently using well-understood techniques to loop quantum gravity. To impose the symmetry at the quantum level, …

Developing The Covert Traumatic Experience Scale (Cotes): A Retrospective Early Psychosocial Trauma Assessment Tool, Tiffany E. Vastardis Jan 2019

Developing The Covert Traumatic Experience Scale (Cotes): A Retrospective Early Psychosocial Trauma Assessment Tool, Tiffany E. Vastardis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The purpose of this study was to develop and explore the factor structure of a retrospective assessment instrument designed to identify the presence of early covert traumas in an individual’s history. Covert traumas are those which are psychosocial, and often interpersonal, in nature (Altobelli, 2017). While a deficiency in the available body of research addressing such traumas currently exists, limited research suggests that experiences of such phenomena may affect individual potential across various domains of development, functioning, health, and well-being (van der Kolk, 2014). In addition, the residual effects of such traumas may exacerbate adverse adult outcomes, such as experiences …

This study is concerned with the analyses of modern electric power-grids designed to support large supply-demand considerations in metro areas of large cities. Hence proposed are methods to determine optimal performance of the associated distribution networks vis-á-vis power availability from multiple resources (such as hydroelectric, thermal, wind-mill, solar-cell etc.) and varying load-demands posed by distinct set of consumers of domestic, industrial and commercial sectors. Hence, developing the analytics on optimal power-distribution across pertinent power-grids are verified with the models proposed. Forecast algorithms and computational outcomes on supply-demand performance are indicated and illustratively explained using real-world data sets. This study on …

Engineering Channels In Porous Calcium Phosphate Bioceramic Scaffolds For Bone Tissue Regeneration, Xuesong Wang Jan 2019

Engineering Channels In Porous Calcium Phosphate Bioceramic Scaffolds For Bone Tissue Regeneration, Xuesong Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Inadequate nutrition exchange and slow transportation in a porous scaffold often resulted in insufficient vasculature formation, which hindered rapid bone regeneration. In this study, interconnected porous beta-tricalcium phosphate (b-TCP) scaffolds with channeled geometry were fabricated. In vitro fluid transportation and degradation of the scaffolds were performed. Cell attachment, migration, proliferation, and differentiation were carried out under both static and dynamic culturing conditions. A computational simulation model and a series of immunofluorescent staining were implemented to understand the mechanism of cell behavior in respond to different scaffolds geometry. We then implanted scaffolds into rat critical-sized calvarial defects to further evaluate channels’ …

Coupled Effect Of Geosynthetics And Randomly Distributed Fibers On The Stability Of Reinforced Slopes, Caique Martins Jan 2019

Coupled Effect Of Geosynthetics And Randomly Distributed Fibers On The Stability Of Reinforced Slopes, Caique Martins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The coupled effect of using geosynthetic reinforcement and randomly distributed fibers on the stability of slopes was evaluated using finite element modeling and limit equilibrium methods by analyzing a case study in Oslo, Norway. The main objective was to simulate the failure condition of the original slope and quantify the improved stability of a hypothetical reinforced slope constructed with geosynthetic layers and distributed discrete fibers. The stability of the slope was evaluated in both the short-term condition with its' undrained shear strength parameters, and the long-term drained condition. Results indicate that the combination of the techniques was found to have …

Emotional Reactions To Stationary And Moving Animals, Peter Krystal S St. Jan 2019

Emotional Reactions To Stationary And Moving Animals, Peter Krystal S St.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Appraisal theory posits that the addition of new, relevant, information can alter the outcome of the appraisal process for a given emotional elicitor, such as an animal. The current study aimed to explore whether the addition of animal movement would sufficiently influence the intensity of emotional reactions and action motivation ratings for animals. The current study compared self-reported emotional reactions and self-reported action motivations for still images and videos for six animal categories (snakes, spiders, cockroaches, tortoises, deer, and ducks). Our findings indicate that movement increases the intensity of relevant emotional reactions to cockroaches, tortoises, deer, and ducks, but not …

Effects Of A Faith-Based Health Devotional On Illness Representation Of High Blood Pressure In African Americans, Gina C. Daye

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The African American population has persistently suffered a greater disease burden from uncontrolled high blood pressure than any other ethnic/racial group. There have been many attempts to reduce the health disparity but with little changes in adverse outcomes over the years. As African Americans are very religious and incorporate spirituality into their everyday lives, this research followed a faith-based approach and was conducted in the church setting. The study was guided by the Illness Representation Model (IRM) and the Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality (TCCDU). One hundred male and female participants were recruited from five African American churches …

Immigration, Identity, And Genealogy: A Case Study, Thomas Daniel Knight Jan 2019

Immigration, Identity, And Genealogy: A Case Study, Thomas Daniel Knight

History Faculty Publications

This paper examines the life and experiences of a 19th-century immigrant from the British Isles to the United States and his family. It examines his reasons for immigrating, as well as his experiences after arrival. In this case, the immigrant chose to create a new identity for himself after immigration. Doing so both severed his ties with his birth family and left his American progeny without a clear sense of identity and heritage. The essay uses a variety of sources, including oral history and folklore, to investigate the immigrant’s origins and examine how this uncertainty shaped the family’s history in …
