Miscanthus × Giganteus Increases Soil Maximum Water Holding Capacity Compared To Maize, Jessica T. Nelson, Maoz Dor, Andy D. Vanloocke, Jacob E. Studt, Perla K. Schrock, Marshall D. Mcdaniel

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Soil ecosystem services, like the ability to store water, have been depleted after a century of conventional, annual cropping, and perennial crops offer a solution to this and other agricultural environmental issues. We assessed the impact of Miscanthus × giganteus (miscanthus), a perennial biomass crop, on soil water holding capacity and structure compared to continuous maize (Zea mays L.) at two sites in Iowa. After three growing seasons, we measured the following: (1) maximum water holding capacity (MWHC) with and without soil structure, and (2) total porosity and pore size distribution (PSD) via micro-computed tomography (microCT). Miscanthus increased MWHC …

The Uk's Intended Move To Electric And Connected And Autonomous Vehicles: Are Infrastructural Barriers Preventing Successful Transition?, Katy Ferris, James Marson

Transportation Law Journal

The advent of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) is poised to transform global transportation systems, offering unparalleled opportunities to enhance safety, sustainability, and efficiency. Given that CAVs are most likely also to be electric vehicles (EVs), and in the UK, CAVs/EVs are a central element of government efforts to modernise mobility while achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, it would seem the UK is ready to embrace the transition to this new and disruptive form of transportation. However, while technological innovation has surged, critical questions remain about the readiness of physical, digital, and policy infrastructures to support the widespread adoption of …

Crispr-Cas9 Gene Editing In Tomato: Development And Characterization Under Stress, Jun Guo Sep 2025

Crispr-Cas9 Gene Editing In Tomato: Development And Characterization Under Stress, Jun Guo

Tennessee State University Alumni Theses and Dissertations

Transcription factor (TF) families played essential roles in plant responses to abiotic stress, contributing significantly to stress tolerance and adaptation. The basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) TF family included 161 members in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Previous proteomic analysis identified TF bHLH148 (Solyc01g058670) as being upregulated under aluminum (Al) stress, suggesting a potential role in Al tolerance. To investigate this, CRISPR-Cas9 was used to generate SlbHLH148 knockout mutants in the ‘Black Vernissage’ tomato cultivar. Two homozygous T2 lines, Slbhlh148-1 and Slbhlh148-2, were confirmed to contain frameshift mutations that resulted in truncated proteins lacking the bHLH_AtIBH1_like domain, as shown by protein modeling. Phenotypic evaluation …

Dietary Modulation Of Obesity-Specific Gut Microbial Signatures And Their Functional Roles, Anjula Swathi Sagam Sep 2025

Dietary Modulation Of Obesity-Specific Gut Microbial Signatures And Their Functional Roles, Anjula Swathi Sagam

Tennessee State University Alumni Theses and Dissertations

Obesity remains a major global health concern, contributing significantly to chronic diseases. While diet is a well-known driver of obesity, emerging evidence suggests the key role of gut microbiota in mediating diet-related metabolic outcomes. Numerous epidemiological and microbiome studies suggested diet-microbiome-obesity associations. However, consistent microbial markers and mechanistic insights remain limited. To address this gap, this study aimed to identify consistent microbial species associated with obesity and investigate how diet influences their growth and function. A review of over 200 publicly available 16S rRNA and shotgun metagenomic studies revealed consistent microbial patterns in obesity, including members of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. …

Comparative Civilizations Review

For many years, I have been an active member of the International Society for the Comparative Study of Civilizations and Editor-in-Chief of its journal, the Comparative Civilizations Review. Since the 1960s, I have also been a university administrator and a professor, globe-trotting to learn about societies near and far, their rises and falls. Yet even though I lived and worked in Prague, as president of a university, not far from the Polish border, I had never set foot in that country, notwithstanding that my paternal grandfather came from there.

Supporting Satisfaction, Satisfying Support: Bidirectional Associations Of Social Support And Life Satisfaction, Jonathan Louis Jie Sheng Chia, Andree Hartanto, William Tov Sep 2025

Supporting Satisfaction, Satisfying Support: Bidirectional Associations Of Social Support And Life Satisfaction, Jonathan Louis Jie Sheng Chia, Andree Hartanto, William Tov

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Existing literature has explored the impact of social support (SS) on life satisfaction (LS). However, the reciprocal relationship—that is, the influence of LS on SS—remains understudied, despite extant theoretical support. In addressing this gap, the present study employed bivariate latent growth modeling to examine bidirectional associations between SS and LS trajectories among 8,449 middle-aged and older adults in Singapore, over seven waves spanning almost 6 years. Results provided evidence supporting the notion of bidirectional associations. Specifically, baseline SS positively predicted subsequent changes in LS, and baseline LS positively predicted subsequent changes in SS. Findings underscore the potential for interventions and …

The Moderating Role Of Trait Online Disinhibition In Exacerbating The Online Victim-Bully Cycle, Sandeeshwara K Tennakoon Appuhamillage Kasturiratna, Andree Hartanto

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The growth of the internet and social media as a communication platform has increased the incidence of cyberbullying victimisation. While there has been increasing research interest on the antecedents of cyberbullying perpetration, little is known on why some individuals who themself experience cyber victimisation are more likely to become cyberbullying perpetrators. Considering the large number of individuals who experience cyberbullying victimisation in the current, highly digitalised world, this trend of victims turning into bullies poses a worrisome possibility and deserves research attention. One promising individual difference that could potentially moderate the relationship between cyberbullying victimisation can lead to cyberbullying perpetration …

The Return Of Chinese Emigrants: Legal Barriers And Local Practices, Jiaqi M. Liu Sep 2025

The Return Of Chinese Emigrants: Legal Barriers And Local Practices, Jiaqi M. Liu

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

While China has observed an increasing influx of foreign nationals, a notable phenomenon involves Chinese emigrants opting for return migration to reestablish themselves in their country of origin. The process of emigrants returning to China, referred to as “return and resettlement” (huiguo dingju 回国定居) in official terminology, however, is not automatic. Emigrant returnees must fulfill a set of selective and documentary criteria, implying that only economically affluent and duly documented migrants are permitted to resettle in China. Through a comprehensive review of national policies and an analysis of local practices in a diaspora hometown, this chapter argues that the hukou …

BACKGROUND: The presence of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene isomers (BTEX) in the environment is of increasing concern due to their toxicity and ubiquity. Although the adverse health effects of BTEX exposure have been documented, robust epidemiological evidence from large-scale, multicountry studies using advanced exposure assessment methodologies remains scarce. We aimed to assess the association of short-term ambient exposure to individual BTEX components and their mixture with daily total, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality on a global scale. METHODS: Daily data on mortality, meteorological factors, and air pollution were collected from 757 locations across 46 countries or regions. Data on individual …

Measuring Neck Morphologies Using Upright Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Narayan Yoganandan, Mahmudur Rahman, Ali Warriach, Karthik Banurekha Devaraj, Brian D. Stemper, Aditya Vedantam, Christopher Wolfla, Peter Le

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Introduction

Because the head supported mass worn by military pilots adds loading to the head-neck complex, morphometrical characteristics of neck muscles are expected to be different from those that do not wear the added mass. To accurately determine segmental neck loads using computational whole-body human or head-neck models, it is important to include accurate morphometrical properties of cervical muscles from the population of interest, in this case military pilots. Routine radiographic imaging (x-rays and computed tomography scans) is less optimal, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is appropriate. Although MRI scanners are generally available in clinical settings, recumbent scanning does not …

Linking Core Concepts And Competencies In General Chemistry Via Gowin’S Theory Of Learning And Vee Heuristic, Vijay Vyas, Scott A. Reid

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The content in introductory science courses has often been criticized as “miles wide and inches deep”. In general chemistry, several revisions have focused on framing around a set of core or anchoring concepts, and we recently adapted the anchoring concepts content map (ACCM) of the American Chemical Society (ACS) to develop an anchoring concept-based curriculum for our general chemistry courses. In this article, we describe efforts to connect this curriculum with laboratory learning using Gowin’s theory of learning and the associated knowledge Vee heuristic. Within this framework, the laboratories themselves become events connecting the conceptual and methodological domains, …

Organizing For Abolition In Ice Custody, Sarah R. Sherman-Stokes

Faculty Scholarship

The final Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) detainees were released from the Irwin County Detention Center in early September 2021.2 A court did not order the end of ICE detention at Irwin. A social movement, led by people detained at Irwin, had a pronounced impact on the epistemological landscape and changed both normative principles and public opinion.3 Those detained at Irwin organized and acted to create new understanding of law and protect their rights in ways that courts and legislatures could not. This Essay tells the story of that demosprudential project; a dialectic between legal elites and people …

Total hip and knee arthroplasty are common surgical procedures aimed at improving mobility and quality of life. Despite surgical advances, postoperative complications remain a concern, particularly for patients with comorbidities and poor nutritional status. Immunonutrition, the targeted administration of nutrients that modulate inflammation, such as arginine, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, has been shown to reduce infections, complications in wound healing, and shorten hospital length of stay. This review examines current evidence on the role of immunonutrition in hip and knee arthroplasty, focusing on the mechanisms of key nutrients, clinical application of supplementation, and areas for future investigation. Despite promising …

Perioperative identification of ischemic-hypoxic tissue is essential for reducing the risk of mastectomy skin flap necrosis (MSFN), a major complication following mastectomy. Implant-based breast reconstruction is jeopardized in the presence of MSFN. However, existing technologies are limited by depth insensitivity, dye-related risks, the need for contact sensors, and an inability to simultaneously assess both blood flow and oxygenation. A multi-wavelength speckle contrast diffuse correlation tomography (MW-scDCT) system was developed for noncontact, dye-free, and depth-sensitive imaging of tissue hemodynamics in a rat model incorporating four distinct flap scenarios: sham (SH), implant (IM), half necrosis (HN), and full necrosis (FN), representing varying …
