Cover Crops And Corn Residue Removal: Impacts On Soil Hydraulic Properties And Their Relationships With Carbon, Michael Sindelar, Humberto Blanco-Canqui, Virginia L. Jin, Richard B. Ferguson Jan 2019

Cover Crops And Corn Residue Removal: Impacts On Soil Hydraulic Properties And Their Relationships With Carbon, Michael Sindelar, Humberto Blanco-Canqui, Virginia L. Jin, Richard B. Ferguson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Large-scale crop residue removal may negatively affect soil water dynamics. Integrating cover crop (CC) with crop residue management can be a strategy to offset potential adverse effects of residue removal. We studied: (i) the impact of corn (Zea mays L.) residue removal (56%) with and without the use of winter rye (Secale cereale L.) CC on soil hydraulic properties, (ii) whether CC would ameliorate residue removal effects on hydraulic properties, and (iii) relationships of hydraulic properties with soil organic C (SOC) and other properties under irrigated no-till continuous corn on a silt loam in south central Nebraska after …

Estimating Percentages Of Fusarium-Damaged Kernels In Hard Wheat By Near-Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging, Stephen R. Delwiche, I. Torres Rodriguez, S. R. Rausch, R. A. Graybosch Jan 2019

Estimating Percentages Of Fusarium-Damaged Kernels In Hard Wheat By Near-Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging, Stephen R. Delwiche, I. Torres Rodriguez, S. R. Rausch, R. A. Graybosch

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is among the most common fungal diseases affecting wheat, resulting in decreased yield, low-density kernels, and production of the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol, a compound toxic to humans and livestock. Human visual analysis of representative wheat samples has been the traditional method for FHB assessment in both official inspection and plant breeding operations. While not requiring specialized equipment, visual analysis is dependent on a trained and consistent workforce, such that in the absence of these aspects, biases may arise among inspectors and evaluation dates. This research was intended to avoid such pitfalls by using longer wavelength radiation than …

Soil Fauna Accelerate Dung Pat Decomposition And Nutrient Cycling Into Grassland Soil, Kenneth S. Evans, Martha Mamo, Ana Wingeyer, Walter Schacht, Kent Eskridge, Jeff Bradshaw, Daniel Ginting Jan 2019

Soil Fauna Accelerate Dung Pat Decomposition And Nutrient Cycling Into Grassland Soil, Kenneth S. Evans, Martha Mamo, Ana Wingeyer, Walter Schacht, Kent Eskridge, Jeff Bradshaw, Daniel Ginting

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Soil fauna play critical roles in various ecosystem functions and services, but empirical data measuring their impact on dung pat decomposition and subsequent nutrient cycling into rangeland soils are limited. The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of soil fauna, using dung beetle as an indicator, on dung decomposition and subsequent translocation of dung nutrients into grassland soil over time. A field experiment was conducted early in the summer season and late in the summer season of 2014 and 2015. In each season, dung beetle abundance, changes in dung properties, and subsequent translocation of dung nutrients into …

The Representation Of Mature Adults In Tv Commercials: A Cross-Cultural Content Analysis Of Portrayals In Poland And In The U.S., Kinga Kowalewska, Erika Grodzki Jan 2019

The Representation Of Mature Adults In Tv Commercials: A Cross-Cultural Content Analysis Of Portrayals In Poland And In The U.S., Kinga Kowalewska, Erika Grodzki

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

The aim of the article is to examine the portrayals of mature adults (55+) in television commercials in Poland and in the United States. It is important to analyze the portrayal of this group as, on the one hand, they are a lucrative and growing consumer market, however, on the other hand, past studies have shown that this segment has been often stereotyped and underrepresented. It is hypothesized that due to clear differences in the value systems and socio-economic characteristics of both countries, the representation of the mature segment of consumers will differ significantly in terms of their overall portrayal. …

Machine-Learning-Based Pml For The Fdtd Method, He Ming Yao, Lijun Jiang Jan 2019

Machine-Learning-Based Pml For The Fdtd Method, He Ming Yao, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this letter, a novel absorbing boundary condition (ABC) computation method for finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) is proposed based on the machine learning approach. The hyperbolic tangent basis function (HTBF) neural network is introduced to replace traditional perfectly matched layer (PML) ABC during the FDTD solving process. The field data on the interface of conventional PML are employed to train HTBF-based PML model. Compared to the conventional approach, the novel method greatly decreases the size of a computation domain and the computation complexity of FDTD because the new model only involves the one-cell boundary layer. Numerical examples are provided to benchmark …

Global Platform Governance: Private Power In The Shadow Of The State, Hannah Bloch-Wehba Jan 2019

Global Platform Governance: Private Power In The Shadow Of The State, Hannah Bloch-Wehba

Online intermediaries—search engines, social media platforms, even e-commerce businesses—are increasingly required to make critical decisions about free expression, individual privacy, and property rights under domestic law. These requirements arise in contexts that include the right to be forgotten, hate speech, “terrorist” speech, and copyright and intellectual property. At the same time, these disputes about online speech are increasingly borderless. Many laws targeting online speech and privacy are explicitly extraterritorial in scope. Even when not, some courts have ruled that they have jurisdiction to enforce compliance on a global scale. And governments are also demanding that platforms remove content—on a global …

The Three Ages Of Modern American Lawyering And The Current Crisis In The Legal Profession And Legal Education, Rachel F. Moran Jan 2019

The Three Ages Of Modern American Lawyering And The Current Crisis In The Legal Profession And Legal Education, Rachel F. Moran

Faculty Scholarship

During the first months of 2018, two short pieces on legal education were published. One reported on the results of a survey of college graduates, law school graduates, and holders of other advanced degrees. The study found that today’s law graduates were less likely than pre-recession counterparts to report that the J.D. degree was worth the cost and more likely to have second thoughts about the decision to go to law school. The findings prompted Aaron Taylor, executive director of the Access Lex Center for Legal Education Excellence, to conclude that there are “two distinct worlds of law graduates” made …

Active Learning In Computer-Based College Algebra, Steven Boyce, Joyce O'Halloran Jan 2019

Active Learning In Computer-Based College Algebra, Steven Boyce, Joyce O'Halloran

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We describe the process of adjusting the balance between computerbased learning and peer interaction in a college algebra course. In our first experimental class, students used the adaptive-learning program ALEKS within an emporium-style format. Comparing student performance in the emporium format class with that in a traditional lecture format class, we found an improvement in procedural skills, but a weakness in the students’ conceptual understanding of mathematical ideas. Consequently, we shifted to a blended format, cutting back on the number of ALEKS (procedural) topics and integrating activities that fostered student discourse about mathematics concepts. In our third iteration using ALEKS, …

Deep Learning Based Topology Guaranteed Surface And Mme Segmentation Of Multiple Sclerosis Subjects From Retinal Oct, Yufan He, Aaron Carass, Yihao Liu, Bruno Jedynak, Sharon D. Solomon, Shiv Saidha, Peter A. Calabresi, Jerry L. Prince Jan 2019

Deep Learning Based Topology Guaranteed Surface And Mme Segmentation Of Multiple Sclerosis Subjects From Retinal Oct, Yufan He, Aaron Carass, Yihao Liu, Bruno Jedynak, Sharon D. Solomon, Shiv Saidha, Peter A. Calabresi, Jerry L. Prince

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive imaging modality that can be used to obtain depth images of the retina. Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) have thinning retinal nerve fiber and ganglion cell layers, and approximately 5% of MS patients will develop microcystic macular edema (MME) within the retina. Segmentation of both the retinal layers and MME can provide important information to help monitor MS progression. Graph-based segmentation with machine learning preprocessing is the leading method for retinal layer segmentation, providing accurate surface delineations with the correct topological ordering. However, graph methods are time-consuming and they do not optimally incorporate …

Group Development In Natural Resource Collaboration In The Crown Of The Continent: Forming, Storming, Norming & Performing, Meghan Rene Neville Jan 2019

Group Development In Natural Resource Collaboration In The Crown Of The Continent: Forming, Storming, Norming & Performing, Meghan Rene Neville

Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects

This portfolio brings together three experiences of natural resource collaborative groups each in a different stage of development. Researcher, Bruce Tuckman, theorized that collaborative groups go through different stages in order to grow, face new challenges, tackle problems, deliver results, and become an effective team (1965). These stages of development are called Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing. The application of Bruce Tuckman’s model can help both collaborative organizers and outsiders appreciate the complex dynamics of collaborative groups. The overarching goal for my portfolio is to provide new ways to examine natural resource collaborative groups, so that there is a better …
