Spiritual Care In Nursing Practice In Veteran Healthcare, Elizabeth Burkhart, Anna Bretschneider, Sharon Gerc, Mary E. Desmond May 2019

Spiritual Care In Nursing Practice In Veteran Healthcare, Elizabeth Burkhart, Anna Bretschneider, Sharon Gerc, Mary E. Desmond

Nursing: School of Nursing Faculty Publications and Other Works

Spiritual care is important in nursing practice, and spiritual well-being and spiritual care are associated with better health. Military veterans, a unique patient population, want spiritual care to cope with chronic conditions. It is unclear whether spiritual care is provided in veteran health care in the United States. This study used a qualitative descriptive method, guided by the Spiritual Care in Nursing Practice (SCNiP) theory, to describe spiritual care in nursing practice and facilitators/barriers in veteran health care. Individual interviews were conducted with 39 registered nurses (RNs) at a U.S. veteran health system. Findings were consistent with the SCNiP theory …

How To Live: Lessons From Old English And Old Norse/Icelandic Wisdom Literature, Rhys Frazier May 2019

How To Live: Lessons From Old English And Old Norse/Icelandic Wisdom Literature, Rhys Frazier

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Medieval wisdom literature is a genre that is difficult to define and it has not been extensively studied. Scholarship is typically concerned with translation and manuscript emendation concerns and with identification of sources in addition to an analysis of religious influences. There has not yet been any scholarship concerned with the ways in which religious themes and concerns about life after death are meant to influence the behaviors and attitudes of the living reader. The present study seeks to analyze the ways in which the Old English poems “Maxims I,” “The Gifts of Men,” and “The Fortunes of Men,” as …

Embracing And Engaging Holistically: A Pastoral Response To Youth (Or Anyone) Struggling With Anxiety And Depression, Meghan Stretar May 2019

Embracing And Engaging Holistically: A Pastoral Response To Youth (Or Anyone) Struggling With Anxiety And Depression, Meghan Stretar

Obsculta

Following Richard Osmer’s framework for practical theological interpretation, this paper’s overall task seeks to examine the question of how to engage and encourage youth who are struggling with anxiety and depression to seek counsel. Separated into four sections, the descriptive task invites the reader into the author’s personal experience before drawing attention to the larger societal issue at hand. The interpretive task invites psychologist Erik Erikson’s identity development into the conversation, inviting more questions and possible solutions. The third section, a theological interpretation and analysis examines the Rule of St. Benedict and the pastoral implications of the incarnation. Finally, the …

Solidarity And Suffering: Liberation Christology From Black And Womanist Perspectives, Kelsi Watters May 2019

Solidarity And Suffering: Liberation Christology From Black And Womanist Perspectives, Kelsi Watters

Obsculta

As an individual without sight, the author is committed to radical acceptance of and liberation for marginalized groups, as well as a commitment to deep solidarity with womanist theology. This piece focuses on a God whom we know, and love is actively, sacramentally, eternally present in Jesus Christ, whose self-emptying reflects radical solidarity with the oppressed. The author seeks to bring to light a Christological perspective that identifies with the marginalized Jesus – namely, black and womanist liberation theology. Black theology centralizes Jesus as Liberator of the oppressed. It is only in solidarity with the oppressed that we will ourselves …

Managing The Effects Of Poor Sleep Quality In Nurses, Emily Huene, Sarah Rausch, Georgia Vasiu, Hannah Lopez, Rachael Valentz, Msn, Rn, Ccrn

Anna Vaughn School of Nursing Undergraduate Work

Staffing shortages, high turnover rates, and prolonged work shifts has caused decreased sleep quality in nurses due to fatigue. The fatigued nurse causes concern for safety, coordination and agility, patient avoidance, lack of compassion, impaired cognitive function, risk for chronic diseases, and patient care errors. This systematic research review was designed to identify evidence-based practice nursing interventions currently being used to manage the effects of reduced sleep quality. Methods for performing this systematic research review were to search multiple databases using keywords, scanning article titles and abstracts, and critiquing for relevance and quality. Findings from this systematic review found multiple …

Trauma: Integrating Play Therapy And Eye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing, Theresa Odden

Counselor Education Capstones

Trauma has been documented for hundreds of years. Anyone can experience symptoms of trauma. Wamser-Nanney and Vandenberg (2013), discuss different types of trauma including, physical, sexual, domestic, medical, natural disaster, and terrorism violence. Symptoms from trauma can result in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD is a result from a traumatic event that occurred. It can alter the brain and leave long lasting psychological symptoms (Bremner, 2006). Treatment for PTSD has focused around using exposure or cognitive therapies to help clients work through their traumatic event. Beckley-Forset (2015), discussed using an alternative therapy to work with trauma. She integrated play therapy …

The Practice Of Children’S Ministry: Developing A Cohesive Vision Of Practice With Church Leaders, Shannon Clarkson Rains May 2019

The Practice Of Children’S Ministry: Developing A Cohesive Vision Of Practice With Church Leaders, Shannon Clarkson Rains

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this project was to create a congregational workshop for church leaders that leads to the development of a cohesive vision for the practice of children’s ministry. In order to do this, I began by presenting the evolution of children’s ministry in the Churches of Christ along with the current tensions that exist between ministers and church leadership created by a lack of cohesive vision for the practice of children’s ministry. This foundational understanding of the origins of this tension supports my discussion of a vision for children’s ministry that includes attention to the spiritual formation of children—an …

Pastoral Leadership In A Cross-Cultural, Multicultural, Conflict-Driven Congregation: A Filipino Case Study, Ed Volfe May 2019

Pastoral Leadership In A Cross-Cultural, Multicultural, Conflict-Driven Congregation: A Filipino Case Study, Ed Volfe

Doctor of Ministry Projects and Theses

Pastoral Leadership in a Cross-Cultural, Multicultural, Conflict-Driven Congregation: A Filipino Case Study

Christ Redeemer was a Cross-Cultural, Multicultural church where the majority of the members were Filipinos. The church experienced way too many conflicts that distracted everyone in the congregation from the real calling to “make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.”[1] The ethos of Christ Redeemer seemed to be driven by conflict, regardless of whether the leadership provided came from a Filipino or a non-Filipino pastor. The congregation fed conflict upon conflict, creating a cycle of tension with little engagement in critical issues in the …

The Benefits Of Art Integration In Schools, Amy Le May 2019

The Benefits Of Art Integration In Schools, Amy Le

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The presence of art instruction in the elementary classroom has been drastically reduced with class time focused on mandated curriculum and standardized test preparation. Art integration, an approach to learning that combines traditional curriculum with art, may not only provide students with opportunities for greater academic achievement and personal growth, but in addition, may provide a solution to this problem. To address this need, I have created a 3-day science lesson that integrates art for first grade students at Olson Elementary School in Marina, California.

“On The Altar Of Sectarianism”: Orson Murray’S Anti-Biblical Thought And The American Anti-Slavery Society, 1833-1863, James Carson Howard

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

My thesis focuses on the abolitionist movement in America through the lens of forgotten abolitionist, Orson S. Murray. Murray was an original member of the American Anti-Slavery Society (AASS) and was editor of the Vermont Baptists’ denominational newspaper from 1835-1843. Like other abolitionists, Murray used the press as his pulpit to facilitate abolitionist thought with a Christian influence. Murray’s use of the press to circulate his abolitionist thought was however understood by the Vermont Baptist Committee as an agitating disruption toward the unity of the broader Baptist community. After Murray’s informal excommunication, it increased his skepticism of religion and caused …

Catholic Social Teaching And Neo-Abolitionism: Tearing Down The House Of The Rising Sun, Elizabeth M. Donovan May 2019

Catholic Social Teaching And Neo-Abolitionism: Tearing Down The House Of The Rising Sun, Elizabeth M. Donovan

Cleveland State Law Review

Catholic Social Teaching (“CST”) is the body of literature written in the modern era by papal and episcopal teachers in response to current political, economic, and social issues. CST views individuals in the sex trade as victims, however they arrived in the trade. Prostitution abolitionists, called neo-abolitionists, because their current efforts to wipe out sex trafficking and prostitution mirror similar efforts by reformers in the early twentieth century, also view individuals in the sex trade as victims. A coalition of feminists and Christians developed neo-abolitionist social policy during the late twentieth and early twenty-first century. CST and neo-abolitionist social policy …
