Los Aleluyas: A Socio-Cultural History Of The Apostolic Movement In The Rio Grande Valley, Mauro Sierra Iii May 2019

Los Aleluyas: A Socio-Cultural History Of The Apostolic Movement In The Rio Grande Valley, Mauro Sierra Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The history of the Apostolic Assembly of the Faith in Christ Jesus, Inc. of the Rio Grande Valley is one that is unknown by many people. As a matter of fact, even many members of this movement do not know their own history, because it is not something that they are taught to appreciate. The purpose of this thesis is to inform, not only the members of the Apostolic Assembly of their history, but to teach non-members and historians interested in the Rio Grande Valley region the intertwined history of Apostolicos with that of the region and part of the …

Worship Pastor's Need For Pastoral Leadership Development, Jerry Leonard Newman May 2019

Worship Pastor's Need For Pastoral Leadership Development, Jerry Leonard Newman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Pastoral leadership development must occur beyond the musical development that is gained through practice and musical education. The premise of this study considers the developmental needs of those in church leadership. Music ministers may be equipped for musical aspects of leadership. However, failure in obtaining knowledge, understanding, and enacting of the pastoral leadership elements required to fulfill the role of a music pastor may not have been developed. It can be argued that a change in role from ‘music minister’ to ‘a pastor who happens to lead worship' should occur. While little research can be found confronting the need for …

Lyrics In Congregational Song: A Biblical And Historical Survey, Michael May Apr 2019

Lyrics In Congregational Song: A Biblical And Historical Survey, Michael May

Senior Honors Theses

Is there a standard as to what constitutes biblical, God-honoring congregational song lyrics? In this paper, I will seek to address this question through a review of relevant biblical principles and positions of prominent leaders throughout church history. The Bible provides a language of worship in the Psalms and includes some information regarding singing in the New Testament. Biblical principles have been applied throughout the centuries by various church fathers. The synthesis of biblical principles and historical contributions will produce a set of guidelines by which congregational song lyrics may be evaluated for the purpose of contextual application in modern …

Loss Of A Sibling: A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Experiences Of School-Aged Children, Barbara Dixon Apr 2019

Loss Of A Sibling: A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Experiences Of School-Aged Children, Barbara Dixon

Dissertations

More than 50,000 child mortalities are recorded in the U.S. each year. As a result, almost 8% of the population experience the loss of a brother or sister before age 25 (Jacobs & Bovasso, 2000). This study was an open conversational exchange with ten Grief Counselors who worked with school-aged children, who had experienced the loss of a sibling, to identify the behaviors and expressions of this group of Disenfranchised Grievers. Three patterns were identified: 1) Grief in children takes different forms, 2) Sibling loss in childhood is a life-changing event and 3) Childhood grief has its own time. Each …

The Practice Of Religious Law: Pastoral Care And The Resolution Of Family Conflicts: Case Studies Of Islam And Judaism In North America, Natalie A. Ghosn Apr 2019

The Practice Of Religious Law: Pastoral Care And The Resolution Of Family Conflicts: Case Studies Of Islam And Judaism In North America, Natalie A. Ghosn

Open Access Dissertations

Despite the long-term secularization of North American societies, there remain people, native and immigrant, who are committed to the centrality of religion in their lives. Some members of religious communities, as a result, turn inward for help in resolving conflicts they face in everyday life, particularly in matters concerning domestic affairs like courtship, marriage, divorce, childrearing challenges, estate planning, and the like. The practice of seeking a religious form of conflict resolution is not uncommon among Jewish and Muslim communities in North America. American and Canadian law are pluralist by nature in that they permit and partially valorize such conflict …

Touched By Grace? A Look At Grace In Bergman's Winter Light And Martin Luther's Writings, Kjartan Leer-Salvesen Apr 2019

Touched By Grace? A Look At Grace In Bergman's Winter Light And Martin Luther's Writings, Kjartan Leer-Salvesen

Journal of Religion & Film

Ingmar Bergman holds a prominent place in the lineup of directors who have used cinema to investigate the meaning of life in a godless world. The so-called “Trilogy of God’s Silence” is often identified as the place where Bergman struggled most profoundly with core themes from the Christian faith. In Winter Light, he explores the topic of doubt, devastatingly, through a minister’s religious and existential crisis. This article, however, proposes that Martin Luther’s theology may provide resources for reappraising Bergman’s canonical film.

College Ethnic Catholic Communities: Ethnoreligious Pathways For An Intercultural Church, Kyle Ko Francisco Shinseki Apr 2019

College Ethnic Catholic Communities: Ethnoreligious Pathways For An Intercultural Church, Kyle Ko Francisco Shinseki

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

When children of Catholic immigrants leave their families and ethnic Catholic communities for multiethnic colleges, they often encounter a sense of alienation. As this experience challenges their sense of identity, the resources typically available on their respective campuses either offer a de-ethnicized version of their religious identity or a secularized version of their ethnic identity. College ethnic Catholic communities offer them a space where they can explore the intersection of their faith and ethnicity, selectively integrate and adapt aspects of their ethnoreligious heritage received from their families and faith communities, and construct a second generation ethnoreligious identity.

Through interviews, surveys, …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to examine the impact Christian premarital counseling (CPC) that use the Prepare/Enrich curriculum have on the couple's spiritual growth and overall marital stability. The following chapters emphasized the need to understand the long-term spiritual benefits and marital stability couples receive from attending CPC using the Prepare/Enrich curriculum. This study allowed me to gain knowledge and insight from couples that participated in the CPC sessions. I hope that the results of this study, …
