Learning From Semantic Inconsistencies As The Origin Of Dynamic Capabilities In Mncs: Evidence From Pharmaceutical Mncs, Isar Kiani, Pouya Seifzadeh, Iam Alam

Business Faculty/Staff Publications

This paper focuses on origins of dynamic capabilities in multinational corporations (MNCs). Building on literature in the area of organizational memory and organizational learning, we investigate factors that contribute to subsidiaries of MNCs ability to detach themselves from obsolete knowledge and practices. To construct the theoretical framework, 11 extensive interviews with marketing and sales executives from three pharmaceutical MNCs operated in Iran were conducted. We test our hypotheses using statistical quantitative analysis of data related to 459 observations from subsidiaries of 51 pharmaceutical MNCs during years 2005-2009. We examine the quality of corrective actions taken by subsidiaries of pharmaceutical MNCs …

Characterizing The Importance Of Clarity Of Roles And Responsibilities In Government Inter-Organizational Collaboration And Information Sharing Initiatives, J. Ramon Gil-Garcia, A. Guler, Theresa A. Pardo, G. Brian Burke Jan 2019

Characterizing The Importance Of Clarity Of Roles And Responsibilities In Government Inter-Organizational Collaboration And Information Sharing Initiatives, J. Ramon Gil-Garcia, A. Guler, Theresa A. Pardo, G. Brian Burke

Center for Technology in Government

Previous research has shown that clarity of roles and responsibilities (CRR) influences the performance of individual organizations as well as inter-organizational efforts. In the context of cross-boundary information sharing (CBIS), CRR has been found to enable other important determinants of success, such as building trust among members, increasing their willingness to participate, and mitigating some of their concerns about security, among others. However, few studies have attempted to understand the determinants of CRR in government CBIS initiatives. Sayogo, Gil-Garcia, and Cronemberger's (2016) analysis of results of a national survey identified three significant determinants of CRR in CBIS, (1) the extent …

An Alternative Approach In Hospitality: Exploring The Leadership Philosophy Of A Successful Restauranteur Family, Scott Linklater, Kem Gambrell

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Hospitality in the United States has come a long way since the first recorded “inn” was established in 1607 by Spaniards in what is now modern-day Santa Fe, New Mexico (http://traveltips.usatoday.com/history-hotel-restaurantmanagement-54946.html). Since then, hotels and restaurants have popped up throughout the United States along trade routes and waterways, serving bourgeoning metropolitan centers such as New York City and locations along the Mississippi River.

Time Is Not On Our Side: Why Specious Claims Of Collective Bargaining Rights Should Not Be Allowed To Delay Police Reform Efforts, Ayesha Bell Hardaway Jan 2019

Time Is Not On Our Side: Why Specious Claims Of Collective Bargaining Rights Should Not Be Allowed To Delay Police Reform Efforts, Ayesha Bell Hardaway

Faculty Publications

Many view the passage of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 as the best chance for police departments to make meaningful and lasting improvements. That legislation provides the federal government with the authority to investigate and sue local law enforcement agencies for engaging in a pattern or practice of policing that violates the rights of individuals. However, police unions have attempted to intervene in structural reform litigation designed to remedy unconstitutional policing practices. Those attempts have largely been based on employment rights conferred through collective bargaining laws and similar employment protections. The unions argue that the …

Conflicts Of Interest And Law-Firm Structure, Cassandra Burke Robertson Jan 2019

Conflicts Of Interest And Law-Firm Structure, Cassandra Burke Robertson

Faculty Publications

Business and law are increasingly practiced on a transnational scale, and law firms are adopting new business structures in order to compete on this global playing field. Over the last decade, global law firms have merged into so-called “mega-brands” or “mega-firms”—that is, associations of national or regional law firms that join together under a single brand worldwide. For law firms, the most common mega-firm structure has been the Swiss verein, though the English “Company Limited by Guarantee” structure is growing in popularity as well, as is the similar “European Economic Interest Grouping.” All of these structures allow related entities to …

Improving Staffing At A Southern Virginia Hospital Using Bardach’S Policy Analysis And The Ihi Triple Aim Framework, Caitlin Crowder

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Clinical Projects, 2016-2019

Nurse staffing is a major concern for healthcare organizations. Ensuring adequate staffing is crucial to providing quality, patient-centered care. The purpose of this project was to explore staffing policy options at a Southern Virginia Hospital using Bardach’s policy analysis and the IHI Triple Aim as frameworks. This policy analysis was conducted to offer a solution for staffing. The current staffing model at this rural Southern Virginia hospital resulted in ongoing, escalating costs that cannot be sustained over time. The three staffing options reviewed included: allowing the current staffing plan to stay in place, implementing a staffing committee, and implementing a …

Reducing Inpatient Falls On A Cardiovascular Progressive Care Unit: A Quality Improvement Study To Implement Interprofessional Intentional Rounding, Deidra Pennington Jan 2019

Reducing Inpatient Falls On A Cardiovascular Progressive Care Unit: A Quality Improvement Study To Implement Interprofessional Intentional Rounding, Deidra Pennington

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Clinical Projects, 2016-2019

Patient falls remain a significant concern for hospitals despite years of focus and research on the topic. Most hospitals have robust fall prevention policies in place containing numerous interventions, yet few demonstrate evidence of long-term sustainability in fall reduction. Patient falls impact overall health outcomes and result in higher costs for the patient and facility due to increased lengths of stay and more medical tests. The location for this study was the cardiovascular progressive care unit (CVPCU) at a Level 1 Trauma Center and academic hospital. This unit underwent a relocation and merger of two nursing units in the fall …

Take home points

  1. Program evaluation depends on the goals; the clearer they are, the more effective the program will be.
  2. Evaluation models are powerful tools, but expertise in using them is critical.
  3. Evaluation begins before, and continues after, the intervention itself.
  4. Success criteria should be defined and stakeholders’ participation ensured before choosing evaluation measures.

Business Model Innovation: A Review And Research Agenda, Boumediene Ramdani, Ahmed Binsaif, Elias Boukrami Jan 2019

Business Model Innovation: A Review And Research Agenda, Boumediene Ramdani, Ahmed Binsaif, Elias Boukrami

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Purpose – The aim of this paper is to review and synthesise the recent advancements in the business model literature and explore how firms approach business model innovation. Design/methodology/approach – A systematic review of business model innovation literature was carried out by analysing 219 papers published between 2010 and 2016. Findings – Evidence reviewed suggests that rather than taking either an evolutionary process of continuous revision, adaptation and fine-tuning of the existing business model or a revolutionary process of replacing the existing business model, firms can explore alternative business models through experimentation, open and disruptive innovations. It was also found …

Automation And Adaptation: Information Technology, Work Practices, And Labor Demand At Three Firms, Spencer J. Rockwell Jan 2019

Automation And Adaptation: Information Technology, Work Practices, And Labor Demand At Three Firms, Spencer J. Rockwell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The use of information and communication technology to automate routine tasks involves two types of innovation: technological and organizational. Together, improvements in technological capabilities and complementary changes made by firms in the way they organize work and implement work practices constitute the conditions under which machines substitute for or complement human workers. Building on the prevailing model of routine-biased technical change and recent insights into organizational complementarities, I conduct three qualitative case studies in health care and real estate to assess the relationship between technology and firm-level labor demand. Unique combinations of technological innovation, organizational complementarity, and decision-making at each …

Individual interviews focused on recent change events were conducted with participants identified through the …

The Mediating Effect Of Color-Blind Racial Ideology On The Relationship Between Multicultural Counseling Competence And Empathy, Brain R. Fitts Jan 2019

The Mediating Effect Of Color-Blind Racial Ideology On The Relationship Between Multicultural Counseling Competence And Empathy, Brain R. Fitts

ETD Archive

Multicultural counseling competence is the extent to which a therapist can effectively work with clients from cultural groups which differ from their own, and is expressed through skills, knowledge, and awareness (Sue, 1998; Sue, Bernier, Durran, Feinberg, Pedersen, Smith, & Vasquez-Nuttall, 1982; Sue, Arredondo, & McDavis, 1992). Color-blind racial ideology is the belief that either emphasizes sameness among all individuals, known as color-evasion color-blind racial attitudes, or emphasizes that all individuals have the same opportunity for success, known as power-evasion colorblind racial attitudes (Carr, 1997; Neville, Lilly, Duran, Lee, & Browne, 2000; Neville, Awad, Brooks, Flores, & Bluemel, 2013). Implementing And Sustaining Trauma-Informed Care: An Exploration Of Staff Attitudes, Beliefs, And Experiences, Aaron Muttillo

ETD Archive

There is optimism that the effects of childhood adversity can be mitigated through trauma-informed care (TIC) practices in school settings. This study investigated a nonprofit child-serving organization’s experience with implementing and sustaining TIC. At both the organizational and individual level, factors exist that complicate the application ofTIC principles. This case study utilized a mixed methods approach to better understand staff’s conceptualization of TIC, their attitudes concerning TIC, and their experiences using TIC practices. After nearly a decade since TIC was first implemented, the study found that staff continue to maintain favorable attitudes toward TIC while their articulation ofTIC practices varied. …

Strategic Alliances Between Banks And Fintechs For Digital Innovation: Motives To Collaborate And Types Of Interaction, Milan Frederik Klus, Todor Stefan Lohwasser, Friedrich Holotiuk, Jürgen Moormann Jan 2019

Strategic Alliances Between Banks And Fintechs For Digital Innovation: Motives To Collaborate And Types Of Interaction, Milan Frederik Klus, Todor Stefan Lohwasser, Friedrich Holotiuk, Jürgen Moormann

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

In times of digitalization, established firms operating in the financial services sector increasingly form alliances with start-up companies to satisfy the customers´ demand for rapid innovation and cope with the growing dynamics of markets. Technology-enabled innovation challenges traditional business models of incumbent institutions (e.g., banks) and requires them to adapt swiftly to the needs of the digital age. However, young firms providing technological solutions for the financial services industry (fintechs) also face difficulties, such as meeting regulatory requirements and winning the trust of potential customers. To compensate for these shortcomings and to exploit synergies, banks and fintechs are increasingly pooling …

Transitions To Capitalism In Early Modern Europe: Economies In The Era Of Early Globalization, C. 1450 – C. 1820, Robert S. Duplessis

History Faculty Works

Between the end of the Middle Ages and the early nineteenth century, the long-established structures and practices of European trade, agriculture, and industry were disparately but profoundly transformed. Revised, updated, and expanded, this second edition of Transitions to Capitalism in Early Modern Europe narrates and analyses the diverse trends that greatly enlarged European commerce, permanently modified rural and urban production, gave birth to new social classes, remade consumer habits, and altered global economic geographies, culminating in capitalist industrial revolution. Broad in chronological and geographical scope and explicitly comparative, Robert S. DuPlessis' book introduces readers to a wealth of information drawn …

An Investigation Of Peer Accountability In Healthcare, Angela Demichele Jan 2019

An Investigation Of Peer Accountability In Healthcare, Angela Demichele

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Peer accountability is the practice of providing feedback to, and receiving feedback from, one’s colleagues (Lockett et al., 2015)—both for the purposes of recognizing good work when it happens, and correcting risky behaviors in the moment. The concept of peer accountability has been overshadowed by research focusing on teamwork, which tends to focus on reducing the power distance among team members and increasing an individual’s ability to speak up the hierarchy. Our next opportunity for achieving safety and reliability in healthcare will come from peers monitoring one another’s actions. This study analyzes the untapped links between peer accountability behaviors, psychological …

Therapeutic Expression, Jennifer Kinsley Jan 2019

Therapeutic Expression, Jennifer Kinsley

Emory Law Journal

This Article explores the relationship between free speech and harm. Examining the historical First Amendment justifications, it argues that harm is a relevant criterion in determining the scope of speech protection. But this Article also resists the notion that speech should be restricted solely based upon resultant damage, demonstrating instead that the freedom to speak freely actually forestalls rather than causes individual and societal harm. Drawing upon psychological and sociological theories related to the treatment of sex offenders, the Article posits that the ability to engage in free expression is critical to preventing physical and emotional damage to others. Individuals …

The Impact Of Health Literacy On Rating Of Healthcare Experience, Robert William Martin Jan 2019

The Impact Of Health Literacy On Rating Of Healthcare Experience, Robert William Martin

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) changed the landscape of healthcare in a number of ways. Among these was the inclusion of patient experience ratings in the Value Based Purchasing (VBP) program. With this change, it has become imperative for administrative and clinical leaders to understand the drivers and factors that impact patient experience ratings. One association that has been largely unexplored by researchers is the relationship of health literacy to patient experience. This project, using a dataset from the 2012 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), examined the relationship between health literacy and ratings of patient experience. Using …

Developing A Set Of Leadership Competencies For Ems Leaders, Sarah E. Peace

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

EMS agencies are generally focused on patient care skills and on-scene management, spending very little time developing the core leadership skills needed to lead their team both on-scene and while back at the station. There are numerous health care competency models available to help leaders grow, however, there is one model available to EMS agencies that has not been validated. This study will utilize a mixed method approach to identify competencies that can be used among EMS Leaders to guide and develop leadership skills and training.

Exploring Leadership In The Middle: An Application Of Schon's Reflective Conversation—A Decision-Making Process For Assemblies Of God World Missions Area Directors, James A. Sabella

Doctor of Ministry

Middle leaders are an essential part of every organization. Their position in the organization’s structure places them at the center of the organization’s operations. From this middle position, the middle leader functions as both follower and leader, having a responsibility both upward and downward in the organization. In these capacities the middle leader becomes a critical link between the vision, goals and mission of the organization and the day-to-day carrying out of the vision, goals and mission. And yet middle leaders often go unnoticed. This dissertation focuses on those who lead in the middle: specifically, the Area Director in the …

The Role Of Therapist Multicultural Competency On Treatment Outcomes, Minnah Farook Jan 2019

The Role Of Therapist Multicultural Competency On Treatment Outcomes, Minnah Farook

Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology

Racial and ethnic minority populations suffer disproportionally from mental health disparities in the United States (Dillon et al., 2015; Holden et al., 2014). Research has indicated that a lack of culturally competent care contributes to these disparities (Holden & Xanthos, 2009). As multicultural competencies (American Psychological Association [APA], 2002; Council of National Psychological Associations for the Advancement of Ethnic Minority Interests, 2003) have been widely endorsed and implemented in professional organizations and training programs, research on their need and usefulness has increased over the last three decades (Worthington et al., 2007). However, the majority of research on multicultural competencies has …
