The exercise-induced variations of some biochemical parameters including calcium (Ca), phosphorous (P), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), sodium (Na), potassium (K), chlorine (Cl), glucose, urea, creatinine, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and creatine kinase (CK) were assessed in the serum of 25 Arabian horses. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein 3 different times: before exercise, 5 h after exercise, and 18 h after exercise. Statistical analysis was performed using SAS (version 9.2; SAS Institute, Cary, NC, USA). Ca, Cl, glucose, and urea showed significant (P < 0.05) changes due to exercise. There was significant increase from before exercise to 5 h after exercise in urea concentrations while Ca and Cl concentrations significantly decreased. A significant ascending trend for Ca between 5 h and 18 h after exercise was also seen, while glucose and urea had a significantly descending trend. No significant time-based variations were observed for other variables. The results of the present study indicated that exercise could affect the value of some biochemical parameters, which could be used in future studies evaluating the health status of Arabian horses.

Spatial Structuring Of Zooplankton Communities Through Partitioning Of Habitat And Resources In The Bay Of Bengal During Spring Intermonsoon, Veronica Fernandes, Nagappa Ramaiah
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Despite advances in oceanographic investigations in the Indian Ocean, zooplankton ecology is still poorly known from the open waters of the Bay of Bengal. In order to understand the vertical and horizontal distribution of zooplankton in the Bay of Bengal during spring intermonsoon, stratified sampling was conducted using a multiple plankton net. We found that higher zooplankton biomass was often associated with mesoscale cold-core eddies. The biomass in the mixed layer was less in the central bay and the near absence of organisms beneath this layer was attributed to the very low dissolved oxygen levels, including suboxia in the northern …

Background/aim: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a type of adult stem cell consisting of a heterogeneous subset of stromal stem cells that can be isolated from adult tissues. Folic acid is another important contributor to tissue regeneration and repair, which affects the synthesis of some building block molecules used for wound healing. In this study, we examine the effect of folic acid and MSC-derived soluble factors in the wound healing model.Materials and methods: Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and bone marrow-derived MSCs (BMSCs) were cultured for this study. Cell proliferation analysis was done with xCELLigence RTCA. After 48 h …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of reuse of progesterone-releasing intravaginal devices (PRIVDs) on serum progesterone, estrogen levels, and ovulatory follicle diameter in pubertal heifers. Three pubertal Holstein heifers were used in the study for three different periods with the usage of three PRIVDs up to three times from day 0 to 7 according to the Latin square model. Blood samples were collected on days 0, 3, 5, 7, and 9 for hormonal analysis. Ovulatory follicle diameter was measured by transrectal ultrasonography 60 h after removal of the PRIVD. Serum progesterone demonstrated a significant relationship with …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim herein was to evaluate the effects of the induction of parturition using repeated low doses of dexamethasone in cattle. A total of 28 Simmental cows were used for the induction of parturition (n = 20) or served as controls (n = 8). Parturition was induced by a 1.6-mg intramuscular (IM) injection of dexamethasone twice daily for 6 days, beginning on day 270, and a 40-mg IM injection of dexamethasone on day 276. The calf birth weight, incidences of dystocia, daytime parturitions, and placental retention were compared. The calf birth weights in the treatment and the control groups were …

Bee products with high bioactive properties have a very important place in human nutrition. Biochemical properties of these products such as honey, pollen, and propolis vary according to flora, season, bee race, and production methods. In this study, the biological activities of honey, bee pollen, and propolis samples from four bee races in Turkey (Apis mellifera caucasica, Apis mellifera anatoliaca, Apis mellifera syriaca, and Apis mellifera carnica) were examined. Besides the determining of total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents, the antioxidant capacity was investigated by three different assays: DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical-scavenging activities, CUPRAC (cupric reducing antioxidant capacity) and FRAP (ferric …

Analysis Of Spermatogenesis In Young Male Hybrids Bred From Domestic Cattle(Bos Taurus) And European Bison (Bison Bonasus), Andrzej Zyczynski, Marta Kloch, Wanda Olech
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A new attempt was undertaken to check the reproductive capabilities of male hybrids bred from European bison (Bison bonasus) and domestic cattle (Bos taurus). The analysis concerned two hybrids aged 1.5?2.5 years (the latter being sampled twice at 6-month intervals), and additionally one 1.5-year-old backcross hybrid. Examination of testicular tissue revealed halting of spermatogenesis, which was hardly ever able to proceed further than meiosis I. Spermatogenesis was arrested at the stage of spermatogonia and primary spermatocytes. Spermatozoa were found only in the case of one hybrid and these were mostly malformed. To summarize, all the males studied were sterile, despite …

The aim of this study was to investigate nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA), beta-hydroxy butyric acid (BHBA), and milk urea nitrogen (MUN) profiles for dairy cows fed with rumen-protected choline (RPC) during the transition period. A total of 30 dairy cows were allocated to one control and two experimental groups (10 animals per group) and were fed from 3 weeks before calving to 21 days in milk. The control was fed only the basal diet. Treatment groups 1 and 2 were fed a basal diet containing 60 and 120 g/head/day RPC, respectively. The differences between groups were insignificant for MUN levels …
