Wholesomeness And Safety Aspects Of Irradiated Foods, Rajeev Ravindran, Amit Jaiswal
Articles
Food processing techniques are inevitable technological measures that aim to increase and sustain the quality of agricultural products. This is traditionally achieved by the application of heat or exposure to chemicals. Since the advent of X-rays, food scientists have been evaluating the prospect of employing ionising radiations for pest removal, sprouting inhibition and shelf-life extension of food products. Gamma radiation, electron beam and X-rays have emerged as the favoured methods of food irradiation in recent years. Several decades of research have endeavoured to determine the advantage and disadvantage of subjecting food materials to radiation. This has resulted in several international …

Exploring How Age Influences Sensory Perception, Thirst And Hunger During The Consumption Of Oral Nutritional Supplements Using The Check-All-That-Apply Methodology, Emma Regan, Graham O'Neill, Scott C. Hutchings, Dolores O'Riordan
Articles
The Check-all-that-apply (CATA) method has been widely used for the sensory characterisation of many different foods and beverages. However, this methodology has been rarely used with older adults. The aim of this study was to measure the effectiveness of the CATA methodology to investigate the differences in sensory perception of Oral Nutritional Supplements (ONS) between younger and community dwelling older adults over successive sips of a full volume of two ONS. The study also sought to measure the effects of ONS on thirst, hunger and fullness. 160 participants (eighty aged over 65 and eighty aged 18-35) evaluated two ONS over …

Lignocellulosic Biomass Derived Activated Carbon For Energy Storage And Adsorption, Changle Jiang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Lignocellulosic biomass has been converted to hierarchical porous carbon materials which possess macro-, meso- and micro-pores. The natural structure of porous lignocellulosic structure was preserved during activation with further developed porosity by the activation. The activated carbon can be well applied to electrochemical double layer capacitor for transportation storage of ions as well as adsorbent materials for metal ion removal from wastewater.
The first chapter of this dissertation presents an introduction of biomass derived carbon and its applications. In the second chapter, both direct and indirect activation methods using carbon dioxide were adopted in this study. The results show that …

Pain Relief Knowledge, History, And Expectations Among Emergency Dental Patients, Daniel C. Brawley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction
Dentists frequently treat and manage patients with acute dental pain. Patients often seek care to treat their pain. As a part of that treatment, it is common for providers to use both prescription and non-prescription medications in the management of the patient’s dental pain. This study focused on understanding the patient’s knowledge, history and expectations regarding prescription and non-prescription medication in the management of their dental pain.
Methods
A self-report survey was developed, using Likert-type scales, consisting of 32 items, including standardized, psychometrically-tested instruments. The survey was administered to 108 adult outpatients who reported to the West Virginia University …

Factors Related To Collaborative Willingness In Surrogate Decision-Making Situations From The West Virginia Post., Rachael Spalding
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
If a patient becomes unable to adequately express preferences for medical care, another individual called a “surrogate” may be consulted to make treatment decisions. Surrogates may be asked to indicate patient preferences on the Physician Order for Scope of Treatment (POST), a new type of advance directive completed with patients who are estimated to have less than one year left to live. Research from the shared decision-making literature indicates that collaboration can be a valuable means of enhancing patient satisfaction with their decisions. The current study examined how certain psychological and demographic variables predicted the extent to which participants desired …
The Architecture Of A Basic Income, Miranda Perry Fleischer, Daniel J. Hemel
The Architecture Of A Basic Income, Miranda Perry Fleischer, Daniel J. Hemel
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
The notion of a universal basic income (UBI) has captivated academics, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and ordinary citizens in recent months. Pilot studies of a UBI are underway or in the works on three continents. And prominent voices from across the ideological spectrum have expressed support for a UBI or one of its variants, including libertarian Charles Murray, Facebook cofounder Chris Hughes, labor leader Andy Stern, and—most recently—former President Barack Obama. Although even the most optimistic advocates for a UBI will acknowledge that nationwide implementation lies years away, the design of a basic income will require sustained scholarly attention. This Article seeks …

Neighborhood Walking Tours For Physicians-In-Training, Jeremiah Cross
Neighborhood Walking Tours For Physicians-In-Training, Jeremiah Cross
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Social and economic factors have a profound impact on the health of patients served by physician residents. However, education about these factors has not been consistently incorporated into residency training. Experiential education, such as neighborhood walking tours, may help physician residents learn about the social determinants of health and community resources available to patients.
Using a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach, we implemented a neighborhood walking tour curriculum for physician residents and faculty in the Pediatrics, OB/Gyn, Emergency Medicine, Primary Care and Traditional Medicine programs. In 2017, 86 individuals participated in the tours, 81 physician residents and 5 faculty. Both …

Enlightened Agricultural Improvement In Eighteenth-Century Scotland, Amanda M. Widney
Enlightened Agricultural Improvement In Eighteenth-Century Scotland, Amanda M. Widney
All Master's Theses
Eighteenth-century Scotland is marked by the impact of new ideas from the Scottish Enlightenment that influenced agricultural revolution. Practices that had been used for over hundreds of years with little change, went through a dramatic agricultural reimagining during this time period. Scottish Enlightenment “improvers,” like Henry Home, Lord Kames, demonstrate this push towards “progress.” In particular, Lord Kames represents a conundrum. He, like many other Scots, believed in the authenticity of Ossian’s translated poems by James Macpherson. This patriotic devotion to Scottish culture influenced the way that Kames went about “improving” his own lands and who he chose to work …

To improve professional development, a professional learning community (PLC) was initiated at a small, K–12 Islamic school in northwest suburban Chicago, IL. This evaluation describes and assesses the initiation and year-one implementation of the PLC, and focuses on teachers’ literacy instruction skills. A formative evaluation approach was used to monitor and assess progress and encourage teachers’ ownership of their learning. Teachers collaborated in large and smaller grade or subject area PLC groups to identify, chart, and implement new teaching strategies under peer observation for feedback. Teachers succeeded in establishing school-wide literacy strategies; however, issues challenged the PLC’s future—time, resources, and …
