Supporting Breastfeeding Among Women Residing In Homeless Shelters, Tracy Renee Webber
Supporting Breastfeeding Among Women Residing In Homeless Shelters, Tracy Renee Webber
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
In general, homeless women face many challenges including intimate partner violence, abuse history, mental illness, chemical dependence, alcohol abuse, smoking, medical co-morbidities, lack of permanent address, or any combination of the aforementioned (Vijayaraghavan, et al., 2012). Adding pregnancy and a newborn into shelter living further heightens the vulnerability for this population. Women who reside in homeless shelters are likely to have minimal access to breastfeeding support services and thus low rates of sustained breastfeeding. The purpose of this DNP capstone project is to examine current breastfeeding support within homeless shelters in Brooklyn, New York by conducting assessments of services through …

Purpose of review
The goal of this paper is to describe the complicated and diverse safety risks facing children with medical complexity.
Recent findings
Children with medical complexity have an increased risk of experiencing adverse health outcomes related to multiple comorbidities, the complicated nature of their care, and frequent interactions with the health care system. The safety risks experienced by children with medical complexity are in large part due to the complex nature of their care rather than the specific risks posed by the complicated nature of their illnesses.
Summary
The complicated nature of care for children with medical complexity …

Expression Of Alternative Oxidase In The Copepod T. Californicus When Exposed To Environmental Stressors, Carly Tward
Expression Of Alternative Oxidase In The Copepod T. Californicus When Exposed To Environmental Stressors, Carly Tward
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
In addition to the typical electron transport system in animal mitochondria responsible for oxidative phosphorylation, some species possess an alternative oxidase (AOX) pathway, which causes electrons to bypass proton pumping complexes. Although AOX appears to be energetically wasteful, studies have revealed its wide taxonomic distribution, and indicate it plays a role in environmental stress tolerance. AOX discovery in animals is recent, and further research into its expression, regulation, and physiological role has been impeded by the lack of an experimental model organism. DNA database searches using bioinformatics revealed an AOX sequence present in the arthropod Tigriopus californicus. Multiple sequence …
The Effect Of Loading Rate On Annulus Fibrosus Strength Following Endplate Fracture, John Mcmorran
The Effect Of Loading Rate On Annulus Fibrosus Strength Following Endplate Fracture, John Mcmorran
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Low back pain is the most prevalent cause of chronic pain for North Americans, and its correlation with endplate damage, and deficient mechanical properties in the annulus fibrosus (AF) makes this injury particularly concerning. To date, biomechanical alterations in the AF following endplate fracture have not been well described. Owing to the AF’s collagenous composition, and the intrinsic biomechanics of intervertebral discs (IVDs) during compression, it was hypothesized that the mechanical properties of AF specimens would show rate-dependent alterations in their tensile and adhesive strengths following endplate fracture. The purpose of the present study was to quantify the mechanical properties …

Neurogenesis And Hippocampus- And Olfactory-Dependent Learning In The Goto-Kakizaki Rat, Alanna Chalk
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Research suggests that the chronic hyperglycemia associated with type 2 diabetes impairs brain function a number of ways – including a reduction in adult neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus (Beaquis et al., 2009; Lang et al., 2009;) and olfactory bulb (Lang et al., 2009; Ramos-Rodriguez et al., 2014). To investigate these impairments, Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats were tested in both a radial arm maze and the social transmission of food preference (STFP), behaviours that depend on the integrity of the dentate gyrus and olfactory bulb, sites of profound adult neurogenesis (Altman & Das, 1965; Galef and Wigmore, 1983; Morris et al., …

Incidence Of Responders Vs Non-Responders With Sprint Interval Training, Kyle Schulhauser
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The current study examined the incidence of non-response to a traditional 30:240 s sprint interval training (SIT) protocol, as well as for 2 modified SIT protocols of 15:120 s, and 5:40 s over 4 wk of training in 84 recreationally active males and females (52m, 32f). Pre- and post- testing measures included: aerobic capacity (V̇O2max), aerobic performance (5-km time trial), and anaerobic capacity (30 s sprint). Non-response was determined using 2x typical error for each variable. Chi square analysis indicated a significant difference (P = 0.032) in the frequency of non-responders for aerobic performance where the 30:240 group …

Expression, Purification, Functional Characterization And Crystallization Of Three Porphyromonas Gingivalis Gene Products, Katarina Mandic
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Dental biofilms are coupled polymicrobial aggregates that have attached to solid surfaces in the oral cavity. These collections of microorganisms are known to cause periodontal diseases that commence as localized inflammation of the gingiva and if untreated, eventually lead to irreversible alveolar bone resorption and tooth loss. Porphyromonas gingivalis is one of three periodontal pathogens that make up the “Red Complex”; a bacterial consortium responsible for the production of polysaccharide-rich biofilms that are essential to the inception and progression of periodontal disease. The dysbiosis and destructive inflammation caused by these organisms propel a self-sustained feed-forward loop that perpetuates periodontal disease. …

The bioavailability and bioaccumulation of sedimentary hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) is of concern at contaminated sites. Passive samplers have emerged as a promising tool to measure the bioavailability of sedimentary HOCs and possibly to estimate their bioaccumulation. We thus analyzed HOCs including organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polychlorinated dibenzo‐p‐dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) in sediment, porewater and riverwater using low density polyethylene (LDPE) passive samplers, and in 11 different finfish species and blue crab from the lower Passaic River. Additionally, perfluorinated alkyl acids (PFAAs) were measured in grab water samples, sediment and fish. Best predictors of bioaccumulation …

Early childhood obesity is a persistent health concern with more frequent and significant impact on low-income families. Maternal weight factors impact offspring weight status, but evidence on whether breastfeeding protects against this impact is mixed. This analysis examined a model to predict early childhood obesity risk, simultaneously accounting for maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), gestational weight gain, and breastfeeding. The team analyzed 27,016 unique maternal-child dyadic records collected via the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Wisconsin Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) between 2009 and 2011. Generalized Linear Modeling, specifically logistic regression, was used to predict a child's risk …

The MS is prevalent in Mexican Americans (MAs) and is projected to increase. It is important therefore to better understand its genetic and environmental determinants. We hypothesized that the MS reflects dysfunction in important biological systems. To evaluate this concept, we analyzed gene expression data for the adaptive-immune, innate-immune, and hemostasis systems in relation to the MS from a study on MAs of San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley.

In Vitro Bioaccessibility Of Novel Low-Crystallinity Phytosterol Nanoparticles In Non-Fat And Regular-Fat Foods, Ali Ubeyitogullari, Ozan Ciftci
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Crystalline structure of phytosterols leads to poor bioavailability and makes their incorporation into foods challenging. Bioaccessibility of first-of-their-kind low-crystallinity phytosterol nanoparticles impregnated in nanoporous starch aerogels (PS-NSA) was evaluated in non-, low-, and regular-fat solid and aqueous food formulations, namely, granola bars and puddings for the first time. Bioaccessibility of the phytosterol nanoparticles was significantly higher than that of crude phytosterols in all food formulations (p < .05); it was 88.2 and 91.8% for low- or regular-fat granola bars, respectively, whereas bioaccessibility of crude phytosterols was ca. 30% in those formulations. However, decreasing the lipid content to zero resulted in lower phytosterols' bioaccessibilities from both PS-NSA (53%) and crude phytosterols (ca. 16%) in non-fat granola bars. Bioaccessibility of crude phytosterols (2%) was significantly enhanced with PS-NSA (19%) in the pudding formulation. PS-NSA allows preparation of low- and non-fat foods enriched with phytosterols while enhancing the health benefits of phytosterols with smaller doses.
