Memari Nutrición: A Compromise Between Food Culture And Metabolic Syndrome, Meryem Yucel, Queenal Ayaba, Albanni Harris, Patrick Yazigi
DC Health and Academic Prep Program (DC HAPP)
The objective of this research is to explain how food culture can correlate with the health outcome of an individual, specifically in the Ethiopian and Salvadoran populations of Washington DC. We elaborated on how food culture could have an impact on one’s health and risk for Metabolic Syndrome. In addition, we explored a different solution to this issue without abolishing one’s traditions. We created a program called Memari Nutrición. It is a longitudinal health fair that aims to inform and engage the DC Ethiopian and Salvadoran populations with health incentives such as cooking classes, nutritional education, and free health tracking.

Gonorrhea And High School Dropout Rates: Sister-Sister Mentoring Program, Natalie Ardon, Steven Guo, J'Adore Loftin, Christine Maone
DC Health and Academic Prep Program (DC HAPP)
The increasing incidence rates of Gonorrhea has been a particularly important issue in the District of Columbia. The population most greatly affected by gonorrhea include sexually active African American teenagers aged 15-19 years old. If left untreated, Gonorrhea can cause serious and permanent health problems including pelvic inflammatory disease, eye pain and uncontrolled discharge. Therefore, efforts to reduce incidence rates of gonorrhea should be focused on prevention rather than treatment. Focusing our efforts solely on education has proved to have limited success on reducing risky sexual behaviour within teens. Instead, our Sister-Sister mentoring program, focuses on improving school attendance and …
Switching Diffusions: Applications To Ecological Models, And Numerical Methods For Games In Insurance, Trang Thi-Huyen Bui
Switching Diffusions: Applications To Ecological Models, And Numerical Methods For Games In Insurance, Trang Thi-Huyen Bui
Wayne State University Dissertations
Recently, a class of dynamic systems called ``hybrid systems" containing both continuous dynamics and discrete events has been adapted to treat a wide variety of situations arising in many real-world situations. Motivated by such development, this dissertation is devoted to the study of dynamical systems involving a Markov chain as the randomly switching process. The systems studied include hybrid competitive Lotka-Volterra ecosystems and non-zero-sum stochastic differential games between two insurance companies with regime-switching.
The first part is concerned with competitive Lotka-Volterra model with Markov switching. A novelty of the contribution is that the Markov chain has a countable state space. …
Technology Transfer And The Trips Agreement Are Developed Countries Meeting Their End Of The Bargain?, David M. Fox
Technology Transfer And The Trips Agreement Are Developed Countries Meeting Their End Of The Bargain?, David M. Fox
UC Law Science and Technology Journal
International trade agreements often integrate provisions requiring the transfer of technology from developed to least-developed countries under the assumption that technological development in the world’s poorest countries will help solve pressing global concerns. At first, supplying tangible hardware and equipment to least-developed countries satisfied these trade obligations. Today, however, modern development theory calls for a broader understanding of “technology” to include knowledge, skills, and human resource development. Article 66.2 of the TRIPS Agreement instructs developed country Members to incentivize domestic enterprises and institutions “for the purpose of promoting and encouraging technology transfer to least-developed country Members.” Least-developed countries protest that …

Mapping Development In Cameroon: Challenging Dominant Narratives, Hannah Skutt
Mapping Development In Cameroon: Challenging Dominant Narratives, Hannah Skutt
Scripps Senior Theses
In this thesis I reflect upon a digital mapping project I did in the rural agricultural villages of Bangoua and Batoufam in the Grassfields region of Cameroon. This thesis considers digital mapping as a possible strategy for addressing a current dichotomy in these villages. On the one hand community members express concern over observed shifts in local weather patterns, which they attribute to climate change, and on the other hand community members express desperation for “development.” Of over 130 mapped points, I use this thesis to look at three case studies of community centered development initiatives that address both development …
Ok, Google, Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Human Lawyering?, Melissa Love Koenig, Julie A. Oseid, Amy Vorenberg
Ok, Google, Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Human Lawyering?, Melissa Love Koenig, Julie A. Oseid, Amy Vorenberg
Marquette Law Review
Will Artificial Intelligence (AI) replace human lawyering? The answer is
no. Despite worries that AI is getting so sophisticated that it could take over
the profession, there is little cause for concern. Indeed, the surge of AI in the
legal field has crystalized the real essence of effective lawyering. The lawyer’s
craft goes beyond what AI can do because we listen with empathy to clients’
stories, strategize to find the story that might not be obvious, thoughtfully use
our imagination and judgment to decide which story will appeal to an audience,
and creatively tell those winning stories.

General Nutrition Knowledge Among High School Students, Annique Cornejo
General Nutrition Knowledge Among High School Students, Annique Cornejo
Loma Linda University Research Reports
Background: Obesity now affects 1-in-5 children and adolescents in the United States. As of 2018, the prevalence of obesity has reached 18.5% and affects about 13.7 million children. Obese children are at increased risk for high blood pressure and high cholesterol that can lead to cardiovascular disease, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. Since health habits are commonly established during the formative years, it is imperative that good food choices and basic knowledge about nutrition be taught at an early age. This study examined whether students had received sufficient teaching about nutrition, particularly as it relates …

Animal Law Review
Michael McFadden discusses the Animal Welfare Act’s exclusion of farmed animals and possible reasons for their exclusion. He then briefly discusses welfare problems faced by farmed animals. He ends by describing the various ways in which consumers are showing increasing concern for farmed animals and how consumers, especially millennial consumers, are poised to force the agricultural industry to improve conditions for farmed animals. Sue Leary recounts the history of efforts to include rats, mice, and birds, in the AWA. Next, she explains the historical and contemporary issues with including common laboratory research animals under animal protection laws. She ends her …

Elder Law—My Life, My Choice, Hyman G. Darling, Andrew Adams
Western New England Law Review
As the most recent past president of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) I have been involved in elder law for over thirty years, even before there was a sub-practice of estate planning called elder law. In fact, for estate planning, I recall when the primary document a client needed was a will. The required document has expanded and now includes a will, health proxy, power of attorney, a POLST form (Physician’s Order for Life Sustaining Treatment), sometimes a living will, and other various documents a client may desire, such as a cremation order, a pre-arranged burial, and …
The Economics Of Honey Bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae) Management And Overwintering Strategies For Colonies Used To Pollinate Almonds, Gloria Degrandi-Hoffman, Henry Graham, Fabiana Ahumada, Matthew Smart, Nick Ziolkowski
The Economics Of Honey Bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae) Management And Overwintering Strategies For Colonies Used To Pollinate Almonds, Gloria Degrandi-Hoffman, Henry Graham, Fabiana Ahumada, Matthew Smart, Nick Ziolkowski
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
Commercial honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies significantly contribute to agricultural productivity through crop pollination. Almond production requires the most colonies because there are more than a million acres of orchards that require cross-pollination for nut set. With the rising costs of managing and transporting colonies to almond orchards combined with the high colony losses beekeepers routinely experience, we asked if renting colonies for almond pollination was profitable. We conducted a longitudinal study on 190 colonies from their establishment in April until they were placed in almond orchards 10 mo later. In the fall, equal numbers of colonies were placed …

Vieira De Paula Moraes, Julie A. Peterson, Thomas E. Hunt
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith, 1797), is the most important noctuid pest in the Americas and has recently become an invasive pest in Africa and in India. Having a detailed and standardized record of the biology and the larval development of S. frugiperda will be critical to further studies on integrated pest management, toxicology, and applied ecology. This study reports the temporal and morphological parameters of the immature stages of S. frugiperda for larvae fed on artificial diet under controlled conditions (25 ± 1 °C, 70 ± 10% RH and 14 hour photophase). The survival …
All For One Or Each For Her Own: Do Polygamous Families Share And Share Alike?, Kristin Mammen
All For One Or Each For Her Own: Do Polygamous Families Share And Share Alike?, Kristin Mammen
Journal for the Advancement of Developing Economies
This paper examines whether the mother’s rank (whether she is a senior or junior wife) in polygamous households in Côte d’Ivoire injects favoritism that could lead to differential investment in children (based on mother’s rank), a concern that could cause an inefficient allocation of household resources. The hypothesis is that the younger is a junior wife relative to the senior wife, the greater favoritism she will receive from the husband, and the better her children will fare. This question is analyzed employing Ordinary Least Squares on a Living Standards Measurement Survey microdataset collected by the World Bank. An interesting pattern …

Coaggregation Patterns And Surface Characteristics Of Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Gg Under Varying Nutrient Conditions, Amanda Rielinger
Coaggregation Patterns And Surface Characteristics Of Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Gg Under Varying Nutrient Conditions, Amanda Rielinger
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) is one of the best studied probiotic organisms. The ability of probiotics to adhere to other microorganisms and the intestinal epithelium is thought to play a major role in their protective functions. Coaggregation is an important mechanism for biofilm formation by microorganisms. The goals of this study were to examine the ways in which nutrient variation affects intercellular interactions between LGG and other gut microbes and the hydrophobic character of LGG. We hypothesized that nutritional variation may affect the ability of LGG to coaggregate and form biofilms and thus affect its probiotic characteristics and ability to …
Orthorexia Nervosa Among College Students: Associations With Restrictive Eating, Excessive Exercise, And Psychological Distress, Alyssa Lawson
Orthorexia Nervosa Among College Students: Associations With Restrictive Eating, Excessive Exercise, And Psychological Distress, Alyssa Lawson
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is defined as a "fixation" or an unhealthy obsession with eating healthy food (Bratman, 2000). ON is not considered an official eating disorder in the DSM-5; however, ON consists of an intense diet regimen (Mcinerney-Ernst, 2011). Individuals who suffer from ON have found to be considerably invested in the foods they consume and how meals are prepared. ON can be a cause for a concern because some individuals would rather starve than eat foods which they consider to be "impure" (Donini, Marsili, Graziani, Imbriale, & Cannella, 2004). Individuals with ON have been found to be more interested …
Health Outcomes For Low-Income Older Adults With Diabetes Who Receive Services From Meals On Wheels, Monyca Johnson
Health Outcomes For Low-Income Older Adults With Diabetes Who Receive Services From Meals On Wheels, Monyca Johnson
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
INTRODUCTION: As the population continues to age and healthcare costs steadily increase, identifying what factors possibly add to the risk of hospitalization will help find effective solutions targeting these issues. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that Medicaid and Medicare dual eligibility, membership in a racial minority, and female gender would increase the risk of hospitalizations in the past year. We further hypothesized that receipt of food assistance would decrease the risk of hospitalization for older adults with diabetes. METHODS: For this study, we conducted a secondary analysis of data from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHA TS) to test the …

This thesis presents a study of several meteorological factors and their correlation to tropospheric ozone concentrations in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The meteorological factors studied were air pressure, absolute humidity, temperature, and wind speed and direction. Data was collected from the end of May 2019 to the end of August 2019, on the second story of the Sherzer building at Eastern Michigan University. This thesis also contains a case study, comparing data from Ypsilanti, Michigan to Nanjing, China, to further strengthen the significance of the results found. The study found that the most significant meteorological determinants to tropospheric ozone concentration at Eastern …
Association Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Socioeconomic Status, Access To Care And Depression In Adults, Sierra Powdhar
Association Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Socioeconomic Status, Access To Care And Depression In Adults, Sierra Powdhar
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
In the United States, estimates suggest that 45% of adults endorse having experienced at least one of the ten items of the Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (Sacks, 2018). Having adverse experiences in childhood is strongly related to the development of a wide range of health problems later in life, including depression (SAMHA, 2018; CDC, 2016). However, it is not fully understood what accounts for this association. One factor that may account for the relationship between ACEs and depression could be lower socioeconomic status (SES). Specifically, I am proposing an explanatory model built upon the following linkages that are supported in …

Effects Of Psychological Need Satisfaction On Proactive Work Behaviors, Shota Kawasaki
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The present study examined the drivers of proactive behavior in a workplace. Amazon Mechanical Turk workers (N = 218), currently employed in the US for either a full-time or part-time position, completed a questionnaire measuring four different types of proactive work behaviors, three basic psychological needs, task interdependence, task significance, and employee engagement. The most important predictor in the study was the satisfaction of the basic psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Participants who scored high on psychological need satisfaction were more likely to perform proactive work behaviors than those who scored low. Also, psychological need satisfaction moderated the relationship …

Effectiveness Of Prophylactic Lingual Strengthening Exercises For Patients With Head And Neck Cancer A Systematic Review, Cassidy Pickens
Theses and Dissertations--Communication Sciences and Disorders
Radiation treatment for head and neck cancer has devastating effects on swallowing ability. Prophylactic swallowing exercises are often recommended. However, the evidence for these exercises is equivocal and information regarding critical components of an exercise program is lacking. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the evidence regarding lingual strengthening exercises as a component of a prophylactic swallowing program.
