Sheep Weaning Best Practice, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia Jul 2019

Sheep Weaning Best Practice, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Animal production and livestock factsheets

Monitoring the health and liveweight of weaners is important to ensure their survival and for producers to maximise profit. Weaners are more susceptible than adult sheep to a number of health issues, as their immune system is still in development. Vaccination, drenching for worms and flystrike control are important management steps at weaning.

Growing Weaner Sheep, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Animal production and livestock factsheets

Weaners are the most difficult class of sheep to manage effectively, largely because they usually cannot consume enough energy while grazing dry pastures and crop stubbles.

There are a number of techniques you can apply to ensure your weaners are effectively managed, including setting and meeting growth targets, being vigilant on health and disease management and ensuring the weaners have their protein and energy needs met.

State Preemption Of Local Authority: Explaining Patterns Of State Adoption Of Preemption Measures, Luke Fowler, Stephanie L. Witt Jul 2019

State Preemption Of Local Authority: Explaining Patterns Of State Adoption Of Preemption Measures, Luke Fowler, Stephanie L. Witt

Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

State preemption of local policymaking has attracted increasing attention from scholars, public officials, and citizens, as states have prevented local governments from boosting the minimum wage, regulating firearms, and barring certain forms of discrimination, among other policies. Although scholars have examined the legal dimensions of state preemption and analyzed preemption in specific areas, we lack a comprehensive account of which states have adopted preemption laws and why some states are more active than others in adopting them. Using a dataset drawing on preemption legislation in seventeen policy areas, we test support for competing explanations for variation in adoption of state …

Female High School Athlete's Confidence About Their Future In College Athletics, Adam Potter

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Female athletes may begin at an early age in a sport and find success, but in many cases, there is a disconnect somewhere before entering college where females feel less confident and discontinue their athletic career before college. Some studies have looked at female athletes and their confidence level, however, there is more research that needs to be done to determine if females feel confident that they have the same opportunities available in college as their male counterparts. This study was designed to explore female athletes’ confidence level for their future in college sports. Data was gathered from female athletes …

Postnatal Nutrient Repartitioning Due To Adaptive Developmental Programming, Robert J. Posont, Dustin T. Yates Jul 2019

Postnatal Nutrient Repartitioning Due To Adaptive Developmental Programming, Robert J. Posont, Dustin T. Yates

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The consequences of prenatal stress on lifelong metabolic function and health was first proposed by David Barker and Nicholas Hales with the publication of their Thrifty Phenotype Hypothesis in the early 1990s.1,2 Subsequent studies in humans and animals have further demonstrated that stress-induced adaptive fetal programming leads to tissue-specific changes in metabolic function and growth capacity.3,4 Developmental adaptations to the intrauterine nutrient restriction that accompanies most maternofetal stressors target regulatory pathways for nutrient utilization in non-essential tissues such as skeletal muscle.4-6 This aids intrauterine survival by re-appropriating nutrients to support neural, cardiac, and endocrine tissue function but reduces metabolic efficiency …

Sex Ed. Cai Creation For Young Teen In Thailand, Kitti Krungkraipetch

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

Introduction: Studies on difficult subjects and inexperienced instructors have made curriculum outcomes unsatisfactory. One of the samples was sex education. Educational tools were therefore essential for learning. Computer Aid Instruction (CAI) was one of the study tools for these supplements.
Methods: The aim of this study was to generate sex education-CAI for Thai teenagers. We selected three sex-education topics according to the student's preferences and created the first CAI prototype. Efficient scores and indexes were used to test the efficacy of CAI. Then, in the large population, we did the knowledge retention test. At the end of the study, a …

Background: Anemia in infancy is a global public health challenge. Low hemoglobin at birth is one of the significant risk factors to develop anemia in late infancy. However, prevalence of neonatal anemia remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted the study to assess the prevalence of neonatal anemia in well-appearing term infants.
Methods: This was a retrospective study conducted in a university hospital in Thailand. Well-appearing term infants born between March 2017 and June 2017 in the Thammasat University Hospital (TUH) were included. Exclusion criteria were severe congenital malformation, syndromes, admitted in NICU or death within 48 hours of life. Neonatal anemia …

Stepping Stone Or Road Block: An Evaluation Of Community Colleges In The Midwest To Improve Attrition And Graduate Percentages Of African American Students, Tamela Odom Jul 2019

Stepping Stone Or Road Block: An Evaluation Of Community Colleges In The Midwest To Improve Attrition And Graduate Percentages Of African American Students, Tamela Odom

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The path towards higher education is not the same for all. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore why African American students enroll into community college in the Midwest at higher percentages than any other racial group but persist to graduation at the lowest percentages. Factors that hinder African American students from persisting toward graduation and eventual degree completion from a 2-year college were uncovered through interviews conducted with participants on community college campuses throughout the Midwest. Considering the findings of this study, it is suggested that professors and instructors use classroom interactions and instructional opportunities to …

Opportunities And Challenges Addressing Access To Healthy Food In Five Rural Louisiana Food Stores, Michelle Kendall, Stephanie T. Broyles, Jamila Freightman, Melissa Cater, Denise Holston

Faculty Publications

© 2019 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The prevalence of high obesity in rural communities may result from low access to healthy foods. To improve the local food environment, a multicomponent environmental food store intervention was implemented in 3 Louisiana parishes where obesity prevalence was greater than 40%. The intervention consisted of healthyfood demonstrations, in-store marketing, and encouraging store owners to stock healthy items. We documented aspects of the rural food store climate, such as store size and the store owner's willingness to stock healthy items, that affect improving access to healthy food. We found that although the …

Fuse: People With Frequent Utilization Of Public Services In Clackamas County, Oregon: Potential Service Enhancements, Karen Cellarius, Marisa Zapata, Eric Einspruch, Cameron Mulder, Thuan Duong, Aliza Tuttle

Homelessness Research & Action Collaborative Publications and Presentations

The goal of this study was to answer five very specific questions about individuals with high service utilization and the systems that serve them. The data for this study comes from administrative system data, informational conversations and meetings with community partners, formal interviews with service providers, and interviews with consumers with frequent service utilization.

Limitations: The rates of mental illness, addiction and homelessness are likely to be higher than they appear in this report due to the way these characteristics were gathered or recorded in system databases. Historically marginalized populations are increasingly underrepresented in datasets.

Impacting Student Learning Outcomes By Addressing Basic Needs Of Students And Their Families, Nicole Gossling

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The purpose of this school improvement project was to identify how an urban elementary school could impact student learning outcomes by addressing basic needs unmet for children and their families. This was accomplished by first identifying and researching areas of basic needs commonly lacking for families of an elementary school with a high density of need. Next, how to assist families in meeting these needs via community resources and programs was researched and discussed. An existing annual school community building event was expanded to address these needs in a low pressure, familiar environment for school families. Several local community organizations …

Resetting The Table For People And Plants: Botanic Gardens And Research Organizations Collaborate To Address Food And Agricultural Plant Blindness, Sarada Krishnan, Tara Moreau, Jeff Kuehny, Ari Novy, Stephanie L. Greene, Colin K. Khoury

Faculty Publications

Societal Impact Statement: Food and agricultural plants are integral to human well-being. Due to their universal importance, such plants would appear to represent an ideal entryway by which to address plant blindness. However, with limited opportunities for direct contact with agriculture, many people cannot appreciate the flora that feed us every day. We provide examples of informal education initiatives aimed at increasing public awareness and appreciation of food and agricultural plants, made possible through collaborations between botanic gardens, academic institutions, nonprofits, and agricultural research organizations. We hope these examples encourage and inspire organizations to further utilize food and agricultural plants …

Hole Filling In 3d Scans For Digital Anthropometric Applications, Sima Sobhiyeh, Marcelline Dechenaud, Alexander Dunkel, Margarite Laborde, Samantha Kennedy, John Shepherd, Steven Heymsfield, Peter Wolenski

Faculty Publications

Anthropometric measurements have been used to assess an individual's body composition, disease risk, and nutritional status. Three-dimensional (3D) optical devices can rapidly acquire body surface scans in the form of a triangular mesh which can then be used to obtain anthropometric measurements such as body volume, limb lengths, and circumferences; however, the meshes provided by some scanners may include missing data patches known as holes. These need to be repaired in order to obtain correct landmark detection and automatic calculation of anthropometric measurements -especially body volume. In this study, we present ScReAM (Scan Reconstruction for Anthropometric Measurements) which is a …

Children in Africa are exploited and abused by both domestic and external or foreign actors and these include, but are not limited to, family members and community leaders, foreign tourists who seek the continent’s children for sex, and …

Legislating The Right-To-Die With Dignity In A Confucian Society—Taiwan’S Patient Right To Autonomy Act, Chih-Hsiung Chen

UC Law SF International Law Review

In Confucian societies, people tend to avoid the discussion on death matters, let alone making advance directives to reject life-sustaining treatments at the end of life. Taiwan might be a pioneer in legislating the right-to-die with dignity among Confucian countries. As early as 2000, the Hospice Palliative Care Act was declared in Taiwan, which give terminally-ill patients the options to forgo life-sustaining treatments. Furthermore, in 2016, Taiwan passed the Patient Right to Autonomy Act to enhance patients’ choice at the end of life and expanded the coverage to certain types of nonterminally ill patients. On the other hand, end-of-life issues …

JCPH at APHA 2019

Photographer and researcher John Collier first named photo elicitation in a paper published in 1957. Photo elicitation involves a qualitative interview stimulated and guided by participant photographs. This method can help break down barriers between researchers and participants and can promote rich and collaborative discussions (Harper, 1994).

Student Perspectives on Work-Life Balance: A Photo Elicitation Study

Each student in Qualitative Research Methods (PBH 512, Summer 2018) recruited a study participant (n=12) from across the colleges of Thomas Jefferson University. Students trained participants in the appropriate and ethical use of this method. Study participants were asked to define and explore the …
