American Expatriates' Experiences Of Stress And Burnout While Teaching In International Schools Within Southeast Asia: A Phenomenological Study, Sandra N. Jackson Jul 2019

American Expatriates' Experiences Of Stress And Burnout While Teaching In International Schools Within Southeast Asia: A Phenomenological Study, Sandra N. Jackson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe and understand American expatriates’ perceptions of their lived experiences with burnout and stress while teaching in international schools in Southeast Asia. The theories guiding this study were Hans Selye’s (1951) theory of stress, as it explains the physiological stages of stress the body goes through, and Christine Maslach’s (1997) theory of burnout, which explains the factors associated with burnout. The present study was guided by five research questions, including a single central research question, to discover the participants’ lived experiences with stress and burnout. Four additional subquestions explored emotional exhaustion, …

An Examination Into The Attitudes Of Girls Towards Physical Activity And Performance In Aerobic Capacity, Cynthia Dawn Fairey

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Over the last 30 years, physical activity among adolescents between the ages of 10 and 18 has continued to decline, and the risk of morbidity associated with sedentary living has increased (CDC, 2017). Furthermore, research has identified females as being at greater risk of morbidity because they are opting out of physical activity at twice the rate of boys and not getting the recommended 60 minutes a day of physical activity (NPAP, 2016). Many girls are avoiding physical education classes, where the concepts of health-related fitness, the development of skills necessary to participate in a variety of physical activities, and …

Effective Recruitment Strategies To Attract Orthopaedic Surgeons To Rural Nebraska, Carmen A. M. Pavlik Jul 2019

Effective Recruitment Strategies To Attract Orthopaedic Surgeons To Rural Nebraska, Carmen A. M. Pavlik

Undergraduate Research Journal

Rural communities have difficulty establishing and maintaining a quality healthcare workforce. Twenty percent of Americans compose the rural populations in this country, but only nine percent of physicians practice in these rural areas. From 2000 to 2020, the demand for orthopaedic physicians is expected to increase by 23%, mainly due to the aging population of the United States. Although the demand for orthopaedic surgeons to these underserved, aging rural populations is increasing, there is a shortage which continues to grow in rural areas. One possible driving force of this shortage could be the recruitment strategies exercised by the healthcare managers …

Aristotle On The Good Of Reproduction, Myrna Gabbe Jul 2019

Aristotle On The Good Of Reproduction, Myrna Gabbe

Philosophy Faculty Publications

This paper discusses Aristotle’s theory of reproduction: specifically, the good that he thinks organisms attain by reproducing. The aim of this paper is to refute the widespread theory that Aristotle believes plants and animals reproduce for the sake of attenuated immortality. This interpretive claim plays an important role in supporting one leading interpretation of Aristotle’s teleology: the theory that Aristotelian nature is teleologically oriented with a view solely to what benefits individual organisms, and what benefits the organism is its survival and well–being. This paper challenges the theories that Aristotle takes plants and animals to reproduce for the sake of …

Whole-Genome Assembly Of Atriplex Hortensis L. Using Oxfordnanopore Technology With Chromatin-Contact Mapping, Spencer Philip Hunt

Theses and Dissertations

Atriplex hortensis (2n = 2x = 18, 1C genome size ~1.1 gigabases), also known as garden orach, is a highly nutritious, broadleaf annual of the Amaranthaceae-Chenopodiaceae family that has spread from its native Eurasia to other temperate and subtropical environments worldwide. Atriplex is a highly complex and polyphyletic genus of generally halophytic and/or xerophytic plants, some of which have been used as food sources for humans and animals alike. Although there is some literature describing the taxonomy and ecology of orach, there is a lack of genetic and genomic data that would otherwise help elucidate the genetic variation, phylogenetic position, …

Use Of Plant Growth Regulators To Expand The Period Of Sagebrush Seed Germination And Reduce The Risk Of Restoration Failure: Laboratory Trials, Chelsea Elizabeth Keefer Jul 2019

Use Of Plant Growth Regulators To Expand The Period Of Sagebrush Seed Germination And Reduce The Risk Of Restoration Failure: Laboratory Trials, Chelsea Elizabeth Keefer

Theses and Dissertations

Seed germination during unhospitable environmental conditions can be a major barrier to direct seeding efforts in dryland systems. In the sagebrush steppe, Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. wyomingensis and Artemisia arbuscula are important shrub species that are being used in restoration, but seeding success is highly sporadic due to inter-annual and intra-seasonal weather variability. Altering and expanding the period of germination, as a form of bet-hedging, may improve plant establishment. Our objective was to determine if we could expand the period of germination using plant growth regulators (PGRs) applied in a conglomerated seed coating treatment. In a laboratory study, the seed …

Pre-Discharge Bnp: A Policy Change To Reduce Hospital Readmission, Melissa Duckett Jul 2019

Pre-Discharge Bnp: A Policy Change To Reduce Hospital Readmission, Melissa Duckett

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Heart Failure (HF) is the leading cause of hospital readmission for patients 65 years of age and older. A pre-discharge B-type natriuretic peptide is a strong predictor of hospital readmission and mortality. The annual cost for admission of patients with HF is greater than $17 billion. Diagnosed heart failure patients continue to be discharged without the physician knowing their current BNP levels. The Affordable Care Act established the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP) requiring the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to reduce reimbursement to hospitals with high readmission rates. A change in policy should be initiated to include …

The paediatric nurse practitioner (PNP) is an advanced practice nursing role aimed at providing high quality care to children of all ages. Paediatric nurse practitioners are credentialed to provide a wide range of services dependent on their role as a paediatric nurse practitioner, i.e. primary care, acute care or neonatal. There are two possible paths that can be taken to become a paediatric nurse practitioner: the traditional path or apply for direct entry nursing program after completing Bachelor’s degree. This article describes the path to paediatric nurse practitioner practice.

Blunted Evoked Prouroguanylin Endocrine Secretion In Chronic Constipation., Scott A. Waldman, Renata Tenenbaum, Henry C. Foehl, Peter Winkle, Patrick Griffin Jul 2019

Blunted Evoked Prouroguanylin Endocrine Secretion In Chronic Constipation., Scott A. Waldman, Renata Tenenbaum, Henry C. Foehl, Peter Winkle, Patrick Griffin

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVES: Prouroguanylin (ProUGN) in the intestine is cleaved to form uroguanylin (UGN), which stimulates guanylate cyclase C (GUCY2C), inducing cyclic guanosine monophosphate signaling. Paracrine release regulates fluid secretion, contributing to bowel function, whereas endocrine secretion evoked by eating forms a gut-brain axis, controlling appetite. Whereas hormone insufficiency contributes to hyperphagia in obesity, its contribution to the pathophysiology of constipation syndromes remains unexplored. Here, we compared circulating ProUGN and UGN in healthy subjects and in patients with chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) and patients with irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C).

METHODS: Circulating ProUGN and UGN levels were measured in 60 healthy …
