Social Determinants Of Health In Idaho: Evidence Based Models For Bridging The Clinical To Community Gap, Mcallister Hall, Gabe Osterhout, Lantz Mcginnis-Brown, Vanessa Crossgrove Fry

Idaho Policy Institute Reports

The focus of modern health care is changing. Today, it is widely recognized that health care doesn’t just happen at the doctor’s office; it happens in our home, work and school environments, and it is impacted by the socioeconomic context, or social determinants of health (SDOH), in those environments.

Recognizing this, the Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health (Foundation) launched the Healthcare Innovation Initiative to bridge the gap between clinical and community services to create business solutions that address this shifting landscape of health care.

SDOH can be addressed through numerous channels in a community, this literature review identifies …

Practice Vs. Evidence: Predicting Insertion Length And Verifying Placement Of Feeding Tubes In Neonates., Brittany L. Tipton

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

The placement of nasogastric (NG) and orogastric (OG) feeding tubes is one of the most common procedures performed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). According to the literature, as many as 44% of feeding tubes are placed in the incorrect location in children (Parker, Withers, & Talaga, 2018). The purpose of this process evaluation project was to analyze the current processes and human factors in predicting insertion length and verifying placement of feeding tubes in neonates. The goal was to use the data obtained to compare current practices to current evidence. If warranted, the ultimate goal was for the …

Why Iq Test Scores Are Slightly Decreasing: Possible System-Based Explanation For The Reversed Flynn Effect, Griselda Acosta, Eric Smith, Vladik Kreinovich Jul 2019

Why Iq Test Scores Are Slightly Decreasing: Possible System-Based Explanation For The Reversed Flynn Effect, Griselda Acosta, Eric Smith, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Researchers who monitor the average intelligence of human population have reasonably recently made an unexpected observation: that after many decades in which this level was constantly growing (this is known as the Flynn effect), at present, this level has started decreasing again. In this paper, we show that this reversed Flynn effect can be, in principle, explained in general system-based terms: namely, it is similar to the fact that a control system usually overshoots before stabilizing at the desired level. A similar idea may explain another unexpected observation -- that the Universe's expansion rate, which was supposed to be decreasing, …

Mississippi's War Against The War On Poverty: Food Power, Hunger, And White Supremacy, Bobby J. Smith Ii Jul 2019

Mississippi's War Against The War On Poverty: Food Power, Hunger, And White Supremacy, Bobby J. Smith Ii

Study the South

To ensure that the “militant agitators” did not take control of “industry, agriculture, and even labor,” a group of three powerful Mississippi congressmen—Jamie Whitten, Sen. John Stennis, and Sen. James Eastland—ignited a war against the War on Poverty. As part of President Johnson’s Great Society campaign of 1964, the War on Poverty promised to address and eradicate hunger throughout the nation by making it the “urgent business of all men and women of every race and every religion and every region.” However, in a place like Mississippi, specifically the Delta and plantation counties, the eradication of hunger through antipoverty programs …

Project ECHO Bibliography

BACKGROUND: Treatment for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) has rapidly evolved to simple, well-tolerated, all-oral regimens of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs). There are few data on the epidemiology of HCV in American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/ANs), a population disproportionately affected by HCV.

METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, all HCV-infected AI/AN patients treated with DAA therapies between January 1, 2014, and February 24, 2016, in specialty clinics or by primary care clinicians participating in Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) were included. Demographic, clinical, and virologic data on all patients treated for HCV from pretreatment through sustained virologic response at 12 weeks …

Neonatal Nurses’ Knowledge And Assessment Of Necrotizing Enterocolitis (Nec) In The Premature Infant., Kathryn Taylor Van Hoose

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common gastrointestinal emergency seen in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) (Cleveland Clinic, 2015). NEC occurs most frequently in premature infants, accounting for approximately 60 to 80 percent of all cases (Singh et al., 2008). Mortality rates associated with NEC are estimated to be between 20 and 30 percent reaching upwards of 50 percent for patients requiring surgical intervention (Cleveland Clinic, 2015). There is an abundance of research surrounding the pathophysiology, potential causes, and protective factors related to NEC in the premature infant. Comparisons of various interventions such as: feeding practices and protocols, administration …

Human-Animal Bonding In Animal-Assisted Interventions In Counseling, Ariann Evans Robino, Virginia Buechener-Maxwell Jul 2019

Human-Animal Bonding In Animal-Assisted Interventions In Counseling, Ariann Evans Robino, Virginia Buechener-Maxwell

Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures

Animal-assisted interventionists incorporating an animal into clinical practice must harness the human–animal bond for therapeutic benefit. Therapists have a duty to understand the complex relational processes occurring in this modality (Stewart, Chang, Parker, & Grubbs, 2016). This paper describes the results of a preliminary study exploring the bonding and attachment processes in animal-assisted interventions in counseling (AAI-C).

Automatic Feature Discrimination Of Non-Nutritive Suck Dynamics Among Extremely Preterm Infants., Mckenzie Ann Ochoa Jul 2019

Automatic Feature Discrimination Of Non-Nutritive Suck Dynamics Among Extremely Preterm Infants., Mckenzie Ann Ochoa

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Prematurity is the leading cause of death in the first month of life. Neonates are forced to engage the extrauterine environment with an underdeveloped nervous systems, with limited connectivity between orofacial sensorimotor anatomy, brainstem pattern-generating circuits, and sensory-driven thalamocortical inputs to layer IV of the neocortex. This is correlated with an inability to produce the complex neuromotor behaviors of oral feeding. The NTrainer System is an assessment and treatment tool that promotes ororhythmic motor patterning in preterm infants though pulsed orocutaneous stimulation to improve NNS.

This report represents an interim analysis of NNS development among 42 extremely preterm infants enrolled …

Synergistic Anti-Inflammatory Effects And Mechanisms Of Combined Phytochemicals, Lijuan Zhang, Carlos Virgous, Hongwei Si

Human Sciences Faculty Research

The anti-inflammatory effects of phytochemicals, bioactive components from plants having health benefits, have been heavily investigated in the last several decades. However, the gap between the high dosage demands (μM) of phytochemicals in vitro studies and the low bioavailability (nM) of most phytochemicals after consuming relevant foods/supplements in humans undermines the application of these phytochemicals in the prevention of chronic inflammation and its related chronic diseases in humans. One of the approaches to bridging this gap is to combine two or more phytochemicals/foods to synergistically prevent chronic inflammation. While increasing combinations of phytochemicals on anti-inflammation studies have been reported, there …

Prescription Of Opioids To Youth 2005-2016: An Examination Of Trends, Patient Characteristics, And Outcomes Through 12 Months, Melissa Pielech

Psychology ETDs

Data on all outpatient opioid prescriptions (N=71,647) to youth below age 21 (N=42,020) from 2005-2016 were extracted from electronic medical records within a university hospital system, including demographic characteristics, markers of morbidity, and mortality. Relative risk was calculated for markers of morbidity and mortality based on sociodemographic characteristics. The sample was primarily male (55.0%), Hispanic/Latino (50.1%), English-speaking (88.9%), and publicly insured(50.1%). Mean age was 13.54 (sd = 6.50). From 2005-2016, overall frequency of opioid prescriptions increased by 86.6% (from 2470 to 4610) with the largest increase (206.2%) observed from 2005-2008 (2470 to 7562). Patients who …

Socioeconomic Mobility And Talent Utilization Of Workers From Poorer Backgrounds: The Overlooked Importance Of Within-Organization Dynamics, Marko Pitesa, Madan M. Pillutla

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Socioeconomic mobility, or the ability of individuals to improve their socioeconomicstanding through merit-based contributions, is a fundamental ideal of modern societies. The key focus of societal efforts to ensure socioeconomic mobility has been on the provision of educational opportunities. We review evidence that even with the same education and job opportunities, being born into a poorer family undermines socioeconomicmobility because of processes occurring within organizations. The burden of poorerbackground might, ceteris paribus, be economically comparable to the gender gap. Weargue that in the societal and scientific effort to promote socioeconomic mobility, the keycontext in which mobility is supposed to happen—organizations—and the …

Organizations And Societal Economic Inequality: A Review And Way Forward, Hari Bapuji, Gokhan Ertug, Jason D. Shaw Jul 2019

Organizations And Societal Economic Inequality: A Review And Way Forward, Hari Bapuji, Gokhan Ertug, Jason D. Shaw

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We review research on the organizational causes (how do organizations contribute?) and consequences (how are organizations affected?) of economic inequality. Our review of 151 conceptual and empirical articles indicates that organizational research on economic inequality encompasses a wide range of topics at multiple levels of analysis, but also that this broad-scope literature exhibits conceptual ambiguities and lacks overarching organizing frameworks. To address these two issues, we develop an organizational perspective on economic inequality and clarify it as uneven distribution in the endowment and/or access to resources in a society, which manifests in differential abilities and opportunities to engage in value …

Mind The Gap: Bringing Technology To The Mediation Table, Alyson Carrel, Noam Ebner Jul 2019

Mind The Gap: Bringing Technology To The Mediation Table, Alyson Carrel, Noam Ebner

Journal of Dispute Resolution

As technology impacts every aspect of our lives, all professions are exploring how to benefit from use of technology. Mediation is no exception. Since the mid-1990s, the field has explored applying technology to resolve conflict. At an early point this exploration narrowed in on substituting physical convening with wholly-online processes. Conflating “technology” with “online,” however, left an entire practice area unaddressed, a gap we need to mind: application of technology to support traditional, in-person mediation processes. Indeed, today, most mediation processes are largely bereft of technology. This Article suggests that by not minding the gap, traditional mediation forgoes opportunities to …
