Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (Heds), Jocelyn Akers
Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (Heds), Jocelyn Akers
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is a genetic connective tissue disease with varying expressions and phenotypes. Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) is the most prevalent subgroup within this disease category. It is estimated to make up about 80% of the total population of those with EDS (Tinkle et al., 2017). New and updated diagnostic criteria was established in 2017 for hEDS as a way to categorize the syndrome apart from other connective tissue diseases on the hypermobility spectrum of diseases. The disease expressive itself through a complex pathological process and in varying degrees and levels of severity for those who inherit it (Castori et …

Shape Up Under 5 (SUU5) was a two-year early childhood obesity prevention pilot study in Somerville, Massachusetts (2015–2017) designed to test a novel conceptual framework called Stakeholder-driven Community Diffusion. For whole-of-community interventions, this framework posits that diffusion of stakeholders’ knowledge about and engagement with childhood obesity prevention efforts through their social networks will improve the implementation of health-promoting policy and practice changes intended to reduce obesity risk. SUU5 used systems science methods (agent-based modeling, group model building, social network analysis) to design, facilitate, and evaluate the work of 16 multisector stakeholders (‘the Committee’). In this paper, we describe the design …

Stroke is the 5th leading cause of death when isolated from other cardiovascular diseases in the United States (U.S.) (CDC, 2017). The Centers for Disease and Control (CDC) indicated that 795,000 people have a stroke each year with 65% suffering from some form of dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing. Implementing a simple screening by a trained nurse can detect dysphagia and prevent adverse outcomes, such as aspiration. In the emergency department (ED) of a suburban acute care facility, a pattern of inconsistent Toronto Bedside Swallow Screening Tool (TORBSST) was noted for 24 consecutive months. The purpose of this quality improvement …

Investing In Justice: A Literature Review In Support Of The Case For Improved Access, Lisa Moore, Trevor C. W. Farrow
Canadian Forum on Civil Justice
The focus of this report is return on investment (ROI) and social return on investment (SROI) research in justice. There is a growing access to justice crisis around the world. Notwithstanding the prevalence of legal problems in everyday life, people do not have adequate access to the justice information, resources and mechanisms that they need to navigate the complexities of law. This gap in access to justice negatively impacts everyone. It also comes with significant costs – to individuals and societies. Complicating this global crisis is a lack of understanding of the nature, extent, costs and potential solutions of and …

Social And Literacy Development Of School-Based Pre-Kindergarten Students, Stewart Smirthwaite
Dissertations
In order to meet the demands of college and career ready standards, students are expected to enter kindergarten knowing more than ever before. A need exists to examine data that provides evidence of desired social and literacy outcomes for students in kindergarten. In order to address the need for further study of school prekindergarten opportunities for young children, two different sets of data were collected, examined, and discussed. Literacy proficiency was measured by using data from the Mississippi K-3 Assessment Support System’s (MKAS2) Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA). Social competence was measured using the Behavior Assessment System for Children, …
Food Deserts Debunked And Decentered: From Deficit To Relational Mapping For Food Justice In Worcester, Ma, Brenna Robeson
Food Deserts Debunked And Decentered: From Deficit To Relational Mapping For Food Justice In Worcester, Ma, Brenna Robeson
Sustainability and Social Justice
The mapping of food deserts has become a standardized component of food and health policy work concerned with expanding food access. These maps often follow a similar format of spatially identifying where grocery stores are absent in communities, thus suggesting a straightforward problem diagnosis and intervention blueprint. This paper questions the over-emphasis among many food and health policy practitioners on these technically engineered policy stories, specifically for their obstruction of histories of white supremacy and capitalism within the US food system and urban landscapes. A mixed-methods approach is applied to a case study of Worcester, MA which appropriates GIS to …
Developing A Social Marketing Plan For Direct To Consumer Agricultural Operations, Madelaine Giebler
Developing A Social Marketing Plan For Direct To Consumer Agricultural Operations, Madelaine Giebler
Agricultural Education, Communications and Technology Undergraduate Honors Theses
Since the 1980 farm crisis, the agricultural economy has continued to decline with United States farmers receiving less than 16 cents per dollar spent on food (Dunnum, 2017). As a way of combatting decreased profitability, agricultural producers are turning to direct marketing (Rainey, et al., 2011). Direct marketing exists as a social marketing in which producers develop a personal relationship with their customers (Rainey, McGraw, & Popp, 2011; Weinreich, 2011). In order to be successful in social marketing, the audience with which they are trying to reach must be determined as well as the most effective way to meet the …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Surgically placed gastrostomy tubes (G-tubes) are used in pediatric patients to provide proper nutrition and hydration when illness or trauma renders the child unable to consume adequate oral intake. Parents/caregivers are given education and training on their child’s G-tube, which varies from hospital to hospital. Parents/caregivers are responsible for all aspects of the G-tube once discharged from the hospital. Studies have shown that after discharge, ER visits and/or unscheduled clinic visits are necessary for G-tube complications, many of which could be dealt with at home given the proper education and resources. The aim of this project was to provide a …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
In 2015, 4,506 children from 0-19 years of age were hospitalized with burn injuries in the United States (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). From 2013-2014, 325 out of 11,940 pediatric burn patients discharged from US facilities had unscheduled readmissions within 30 days (Wheeler et al., 2018). Adequate discharge education and quality of transitions from hospital to home will help prevent negative health outcomes and readmissions (Braet, Weltens, Bruyneel, & Sermeus, 2016). In this quality improvement project, caregivers of pediatric burn patients were assessed on their day of discharge with the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale (RHDS)- Parent Form …

An Educational Intervention On Daily Chlorhexidine Gluconate Bathing And Central Venous Catheter Infection Rates In The Pediatric Population: A Quality Improvement Initiative., Jennifer Cothern
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
The use of Central Venous Catheters (CVCs) in the healthcare setting is essential to patient survivability. While convenient, the utilization of such devices places patients at risk for Central Line- Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSI). The US spends nearly $2 billion dollars annually treating CLABSIs. The utilization of CLABSI bundles has shown to be effective in infection prevention. Daily bathing with Chlorhexidine Gluconate (CHG) is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is often included in CLABSI bundles. In an attempt to reduce the incidence of CLABSIs at a metropolitan pediatric hospital in the Southern US, a …

Clinical expertise is a component of evidence-based practice; however, relatively little attention has been paid to this phenomenon in the professional literature of speech-language pathology. This may have negative impacts on the training of pre-professional and novice speech-language pathologists. The purpose of this study was to examine professional narratives of expert Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) to consider applications for knowledge transfer between expert clinicians and novice clinicians. Collection of the professional narratives of 10 expert SLPs were obtained through in-depth interviews. Interviews were transcribed and coded for themes. Themes that impacted expertise in SLP included: training; work sites; individual and clinician …

Studies On Pathogenesis Of The Diseases Caused By Macrophomina Phaseolina And Phomopsis Longicolla On Soybean, Marcio Leizer Zaccaron
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Soybean (Glycine max), a legume, is an economically important crop in many parts of the world, including the USA, Brazil, Argentina, China, and India, currently the top five producing countries. Soybean is primarily used as feed, with incising markets for food and biodiesel. Similar to most crops, soybean yield and quality are affected by a diverse group of plant pathogens. In particular, several species of filamentous fungi have been the cause of severe yield losses in most growing regions world-wide. The soil born fungus Macrophomina phaseolina, causal agent of charcoal rot, has been found to be endemic to several soybean …
