Augmenting Education: Ethical Considerations For Incorporating Artificial Intelligence In Education, Dana Remian Nov 2019

Augmenting Education: Ethical Considerations For Incorporating Artificial Intelligence In Education, Dana Remian

Instructional Design Capstones Collection

Artificial intelligence (AI) has existed in theory and practice for decades, but applications have been relatively limited in most domains. Recent developments in AI and computing have placed AI-enhanced applications in various industries and a growing number of consumer products. AI platforms and services aimed at enhancing educational outcomes and taking over administrative tasks are becoming more prevalent and appearing in more and more classrooms and offices. Conversations about the disruption and ethical concerns created by AI are occurring in many fields. The development of the technology threatens to outpace academic discussion of its utility and pitfalls in education, however. …

United States National Park Service: Publications

Globally, protected areas offer refugia for a broad range of taxa including threatened and endangered species. In the United States (US), the National Park Service (NPS) manages public lands to preserve biodiversity, but increasing park visitation and development of surrounding landscapes increase exposure to and effects from bioactive contaminants. The risk (exposure and hazard) to NPS protected-stream ecosystems within the highly urbanized southeast region (SER) from bioactive contaminants was assessed in five systems based on 334 pesticide and pharmaceutical analytes in water and 119 pesticides in sediment. Contaminant mixtures were common across all sampled systems, with approximately 24% of the …

Convergence Rates For Empirical Estimation Of Binary Classification Bounds, Salimeh Yasaei Sekeh, Morteza Noshad, Kevin R. Moon, Alfred O. Hero Nov 2019

Convergence Rates For Empirical Estimation Of Binary Classification Bounds, Salimeh Yasaei Sekeh, Morteza Noshad, Kevin R. Moon, Alfred O. Hero

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Bounding the best achievable error probability for binary classification problems is relevant to many applications including machine learning, signal processing, and information theory. Many bounds on the Bayes binary classification error rate depend on information divergences between the pair of class distributions. Recently, the Henze–Penrose (HP) divergence has been proposed for bounding classification error probability. We consider the problem of empirically estimating the HP-divergence from random samples. We derive a bound on the convergence rate for the Friedman–Rafsky (FR) estimator of the HP-divergence, which is related to a multivariate runs statistic for testing between two distributions. The FR estimator is …

“Where’S The I-O?” Artificial Intelligence And Machine Learning In Talent Management Systems, Manuel F. Gonzalez, John F. Capman, Frederick L. Oswald, Evan R. Theys, David L. Tomczak

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have seen widespread adoption by organizations seeking to identify and hire high-quality job applicants. Yet the volume, variety, and velocity of professional involvement among I-O psychologists remains relatively limited when it comes to developing and evaluating AI/ML applications for talent assessment and selection. Furthermore, there is a paucity of empirical research that investigates the reliability, validity, and fairness of AI/ML tools in organizational contexts. To stimulate future involvement and research, we share our review and perspective on the current state of AI/ML in talent assessment as well as its benefits and potential pitfalls; …

We present the first comprehensive look at the 0.35–5 μm transmission spectrum of the warm (∼800 K) Neptune HAT-P-11b derived from 13 individual transits observed using the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. Along with the previously published molecular absorption feature in the 1.1–1.7 μm bandpass, we detect a distinct absorption feature at 1.15 μm and a weak feature at 0.95 μm, indicating the presence of water and/or methane with a combined significance of 4.4σ. We find that this planet's nearly flat optical transmission spectrum and attenuated near-infrared molecular absorption features are best matched by models incorporating a high-altitude cloud layer. …

Conformational Polymorphism In Organic Crystals: Structural And Functional Aspects - A Review, Bidisha Sengupta, Pradeep K. Sengupta, Romans Grant1, Matthew Beasley1, Benjamin Mason1, Tanesha Love1, Larissa Barroso9, Mariela Alvarado9, M S. Zaman

Faculty Publications

Polymorphism in organic crystals involves the formation of isomeric molecular identities. It is dependent on the structural arrangement due to inter-atomic interactions, as well as external stimuli, which include temperature, visible and UV radiation. Conformational polymorphism of organic crystalline molecules is often the result of isomerism due to the twisting and turning of angular bonds. The arrangement of the atoms supports different types of bonding mechanisms (which include hydrogen bonding) within the same compound. This, in turn, results in the formation of cis/trans configurational isomers or a proton transfer species (tautomer), having different functional properties. The conformers support the flexibility …

Towards Completely Automated Glycan Synthesis, Matteo Panza Nov 2019

Towards Completely Automated Glycan Synthesis, Matteo Panza

Dissertations

Carbohydrates are ubiquitous both in nature as biologically active compounds and in medicine as pharmaceuticals. Although there has been continued interest in the synthesis of carbohydrates, chemical methods require specialized knowledge and hence remain cumbersome. The need for development of rapid, efficient and operationally simple procedures has come to the fore. This dissertation focuses on the development of a fully automated platform that will enable both experts and non-specialists to perform the synthesis of glycans. Existing automated methods for the synthesis of oligosaccharides are highly sophisticated, operationally complex, and require significant user know-how. By contrast, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) …

Meeting Gifted Students’ Classroom Needs: A Phenomenological Study On Teachers’ Needs In Order To Effectively Implement Differentiated Instruction In The Classroom, Renee D. Mallot Nov 2019

Meeting Gifted Students’ Classroom Needs: A Phenomenological Study On Teachers’ Needs In Order To Effectively Implement Differentiated Instruction In The Classroom, Renee D. Mallot

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

There are a wide variety of learners in each classroom. Students have different needs, learning styles, motivations, strengths, and weaknesses. Gifted and talented learners are often those students who understand the concept being taught before any other student; they are the ones whose brains are constantly working, sometimes solving a problem differently than anyone else. The problem addressed was that gifted learners are not typically given the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills. Instead, they are taught as a whole class with the rest of the students. The goal of this qualitative phenomenological study was to identify the ways …

Bitcoin Is Speech: Notes Toward Developing The Conceptual Contours Of Its Protection Under The First Amendment, Justin S. Wales, Richard J. Ovelmen

University of Miami Law Review

Bitcoin permits users to engage in direct expressive activity with one another without the need for centralized intermediaries. It does so by utilizing an open and community-managed global database called a blockchain. While much of the literature about Bitcoin has focused on its use as a form of digital payment, this Article suggests an expanded understanding by demonstrating its use as a protocol network, not unlike the internet, that can be used to extend the possible range of human expression. After developing an appreciation of the technology, this Article recommends a framework for applying the First Amendment to Bitcoin and …

Chemostratigraphic Correlations Across The First Major Trilobite Extinction And Faunal Turnovers Between Laurentia And South China, Jih-Pai Lin, Frederick A. Sunberg, Ganqing Jiang, Isabel P. Montanez, Thomas Wotte Nov 2019

Chemostratigraphic Correlations Across The First Major Trilobite Extinction And Faunal Turnovers Between Laurentia And South China, Jih-Pai Lin, Frederick A. Sunberg, Ganqing Jiang, Isabel P. Montanez, Thomas Wotte

Geoscience Faculty Research

During Cambrian Stage 4 (~514 Ma) the oceans were widely populated with endemic trilobites and three major faunas can be distinguished: olenellids, redlichiids, and paradoxidids. The lower–middle Cambrian boundary in Laurentia was based on the first major trilobite extinction event that is known as the Olenellid Biomere boundary. However, international correlation across this boundary (the Cambrian Series 2–Series 3 boundary) has been a challenge since the formal proposal of a four-series subdivision of the Cambrian System in 2005. Recently, the base of the international Cambrian Series 3 and of Stage 5 has been named as the base of the Miaolingian …

Sampling Methods For Luminescence Dating Of Subsurface Deposits From Cores, Michelle Nelson, Tammy M. Rittenour, Harriet Cornachione Nov 2019

Sampling Methods For Luminescence Dating Of Subsurface Deposits From Cores, Michelle Nelson, Tammy M. Rittenour, Harriet Cornachione

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Study of subsurface deposits often requires coring or drilling to obtain samples for sedimentologic and geochemical analysis. Geochronology is a critical piece of information for stratigraphic correlation and rate calculations. Increasingly, luminescence dating is applied to sediment cores to obtain depositional ages. This paper provides examples and discussion of guidelines for sampling sediment core for luminescence dating. Preferred protocols are dependent on the extraction method, sedimentology, core integrity, and storage conditions. The methods discussed include subsampling of sediment in opaque core-liners, cores without liners, previously open (split) cores, bucket auger samples, and cuttings, under red lighting conditions. Two important factors …

Attracting Foreign Investments For Green Energy Projects In Sub-Saharan Africa: Climate Change Policy & Innovation In International Legal Compliance, Leslyn Ann Lewis Nov 2019

Attracting Foreign Investments For Green Energy Projects In Sub-Saharan Africa: Climate Change Policy & Innovation In International Legal Compliance, Leslyn Ann Lewis

PhD Dissertations

Sub-Saharan Africa must confront the dual problem of development coupled with the complexities surrounding climate change. The regions stagnated growth has been historically attributed to many factors, but the predominant thought from an international law perspective is that if the region modernizes its legal and regulatory structures this will engender the confidence of foreign investors. With this acknowledgement came the demand on developing nations to modernize local legal and regulatory systems initially focusing on globally harmonized intellectual property rights and then more recently their energy regulatory infrastructures and processes to attract foreign investments. Several international organizations and institutions including the …
