Cortical Thickness Comparison Of Asd And Td Subjects, Jonathan Rigoberto Uriarte-Lopez Nov 2019

Cortical Thickness Comparison Of Asd And Td Subjects, Jonathan Rigoberto Uriarte-Lopez

University Honors Theses

With 1 out of every 59 adolescents diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), more research interest has been dedicated to studying why ASD individuals experience their symptoms of restricted and/or repetitive behaviors, and deficits in social interaction and communication. ASD can only be diagnosed by psychiatric evaluation of behavior, and there is a lack of reliable biomarkers for ASD to verify the diagnosis. To potentially find a reliable biomarker, we compared cortical thickness in 911 ASD subjects and 999 controls from the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE) dataset. The dataset was processed using the Developmental Cognition and Neuroimaging (DCAN) …

Statistical Methods And Validation Procedures For Spike Sorting, Michael Thomas Nov 2019

Statistical Methods And Validation Procedures For Spike Sorting, Michael Thomas

University Honors Theses

Spike sorting is the process of converting a recording of the electrical activity generated by neurons firing in the brain, into a representation of the timings for each distinct neuron's firing. This representation of neuronal firings, when paired with data on the subjects' perceptions or actions during the recording, can then be used to map patterns of brain activity to specific stimuli or behaviors. Here we will examine the evolution of mathematical techniques employed to tackle this problem, as well as examine a few of the still open questions.

Single-Molecule Imaging Of Hiv-1 Envelope Glycoprotein Dynamics And Gag Lattice Association Exposes Determinants Responsible For Virus Incorporation, Nairi Pezeshkian, Nicholas S. Groves, Schuyler B. Van Engelenburg Nov 2019

Single-Molecule Imaging Of Hiv-1 Envelope Glycoprotein Dynamics And Gag Lattice Association Exposes Determinants Responsible For Virus Incorporation, Nairi Pezeshkian, Nicholas S. Groves, Schuyler B. Van Engelenburg

Biological Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

The HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein (Env) is sparsely incorporated onto assembling virus particles on the host cell plasma membrane in order for the virus to balance infectivity and evade the immune response. Env becomes trapped in a nascent particle on encounter with the polymeric viral protein Gag, which forms a dense protein lattice on the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane. While Env incorporation efficiency is readily measured biochemically from released particles, very little is known about the spatiotemporal dynamics of Env trapping events. Herein, we demonstrate, via high-resolution single-molecule tracking, that retention of Env trimers within single virus assembly sites …

Access To Law Or Access To Lawyers? Master’S Programs In The Public Educational Mission Of Law Schools, Mark Edwin Burge Nov 2019

Access To Law Or Access To Lawyers? Master’S Programs In The Public Educational Mission Of Law Schools, Mark Edwin Burge

University of Miami Law Review

The general decline in juris doctor (“J.D.”) law school applicants and enrollment over the last decade has coincided with the rise of a new breed of law degree. Whether known as master of jurisprudence, juris master, master of legal studies, or other names, these graduate degrees all have a target audience in common: adult professionals who neither are nor seek to become practicing attorneys. Inside legal academia and among the practicing bar, these degrees have been accompanied by expressed concerns that they detract from the traditional core public mission of law schools—educating lawyers. This Article argues that non-lawyer master’s programs …

Students’ Academic Performance And Dropout Predictions: A Review, Ahmed O. Ameen, Moshood A. Alarape, Kayode S. Adewole

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)

Students’ Academic Performance (SAP) is an important metric in determining the status of students in any academic institution. It allows the instructors and other education managers to get an accurate evaluation of the students in different courses in a particular semester and also serve as an indicator to the students to review their strategies for better performance in the subsequent semesters. Predicting SAP is therefore important to help learners in obtaining the best from their studies. A number of researches in Educational Psychology (EP), Learning Analytics (LA) and Educational Data Mining (EDM) has been carried out to study and predict …

An Aggregation Of Survey Questionnaires In A Fuzzy Environment And Its Application, Dae Young Choi Nov 2019

An Aggregation Of Survey Questionnaires In A Fuzzy Environment And Its Application, Dae Young Choi

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)

In the response process of survey questionnaires, respondents generally express their opinions (assessment) in a fuzzy environment, i.e., assessment with a degree of membership, and in many cases, an aggregation of survey questionnaires is generally computed mathematically. In this paper, we propose a new aggregation method using the FEV (Fuzzy Expected Value) in summarizing survey questionnaires. As an application of proposed aggregation method, to quantify accurately the current state of opinions and the reasons for national IT investment increasing the rate of economic growth, we decided to circulate a survey questionnaire on national IT investment to interested parties throughout the …

Handling Highly Imbalanced Output Class Label: A Case Study On Fantasy Premier League (Fpl) Virtual Player Price Changes Prediction Using Machine Learning, Muhammad Muhaimin Khamsan, Ruhaila Maskat Nov 2019

Handling Highly Imbalanced Output Class Label: A Case Study On Fantasy Premier League (Fpl) Virtual Player Price Changes Prediction Using Machine Learning, Muhammad Muhaimin Khamsan, Ruhaila Maskat

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)

In practice, a balanced target class is rare. However, an imbalanced target class can be handled by resampling the original dataset, either by oversampling/upsampling or undersampling/downsampling. A popular upsampling technique is Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE). This technique increases the minority class by generating synthetic class labels and assigned the class based on the K-Nearest Neighbour (K-NN). SMOTE upsampling can only upsample at most one minority class at a time, which means for a multiclass dataset, it needs to undergo multilayer SMOTE to balance the class label distribution. This paper aims to find a suitable method in handling imbalanced class …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

An experimental study of the phase and amplitude observations of sub‐ionospheric very low and low frequency (VLF/LF) signals is performed to analyze the response of the lower ionosphere during the 21 August 2017 total solar eclipse in the United States of America. Three different sub‐ionospheric wave paths are investigated. The length of the paths varies from 2,200 to 6,400 km, and the signal frequencies are 21.4, 25.2, and 40.75 kHz. The two paths cross the region of the total eclipse, and the third path is in the region of 40–60% of obscuration. None of the signals reveal any noticeable amplitude …

Assessing The Efficacy Of Virtual Experiments In The General Chemistry Laboratory, Cory Jerome Hensen Nov 2019

Assessing The Efficacy Of Virtual Experiments In The General Chemistry Laboratory, Cory Jerome Hensen

Dissertations and Theses

As more students enroll in chemistry courses, institutions are faced with increasing costs and limited laboratory space to keep up with the demand. One solution some institutions have turned to is the incorporation of virtual experiments into the curriculum, as this can lower costs and increase the availability of laboratory space. Some institutions have offered sections that complete all of their experiments in a virtual environment, others have offered sections that alternate between a traditional hands-on experiment and a virtual experiment, and some institutions have replaced only select experiments throughout the curriculum with a virtual experiment. To begin to be …

Male Burmese Pythons Follow Female Scent Trails And Show Sex-Specific Behaviors, Shannon A. Richard, Eric A. Tillman, John S. Humphrey, Michael L. Avery, M. Rockwell Parker Nov 2019

Male Burmese Pythons Follow Female Scent Trails And Show Sex-Specific Behaviors, Shannon A. Richard, Eric A. Tillman, John S. Humphrey, Michael L. Avery, M. Rockwell Parker

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Animals communicate with potential mates using species-specific signals, and pheromones are powerful sexual signals that modify conspecific behavior to facilitate mate location. Among the vertebrates, snakes are especially adept in mate searching via chemical trailing, which is particularly relevant given that many snake species are invasive outside their native ranges. Chemical signals used in mate choice are, thus, potentially valuable tools for management of invasive snake species. The Burmese python (Python bivittatus) is an invasive snake in the Florida Everglades where it is negatively impacting native fauna. In this study, we sought to: (i) determine if males can follow conspecific …

An Investigation Into Weather's Effect On Aerosol Particles Using Wrf And Mapss, Hayden Webb, Devin Smoot Nov 2019

An Investigation Into Weather's Effect On Aerosol Particles Using Wrf And Mapss, Hayden Webb, Devin Smoot

Student Research

Aerosols are solid or liquid particles suspended in air or gas. Many processes contribute to increased aerosol particles in the atmosphere, such as winds, ocean waves, and industrial exhaust. Once suspended, particles can be carried thousands of miles before being returned to the ground by gravity or rain. Some particles can be suspended for several years and travel all around the world, these particles have the greatest impact on climate and weather.

Building An Alternative Web Scraper For Big Data Analytics, Kurtis Clark, Amanda Evert Nov 2019

Building An Alternative Web Scraper For Big Data Analytics, Kurtis Clark, Amanda Evert

Student Research

Over the summer, I was given access to WebScraper3000 and asked to web scrape, collect internet data, from ratemyprofessors.com. I spent several months working with the program to accomplish this. It only ever seemed to work properly on websites where it has tutorials about scraping them. Even then, the program would only scrape the most rudimentary data in small amounts. If either of these two conditions were missing, the software would lose large quantities of data or just simply crash along the way. After collecting enough data to act as a sample for the research, I decided to abandon the …

The Lived Experiences Of General And Special Education Teachers When Implementing Personalized Learning: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Valia Thompson Nov 2019

The Lived Experiences Of General And Special Education Teachers When Implementing Personalized Learning: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Valia Thompson

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

Currently, in the state of Illinois, over two million students are enrolled in public schools. Despite the implementation of Common Core State Standards, only 34% of those students are ready for the next academic level (Illinois Report Card, 2018b). Current research indicates that general education teachers who implemented personalized instruction met all students’ needs. To provide background information on personalized instruction, the conceptual framework of this study used the work of Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences. The researcher gathered data from initial and follow-up interviews, and reflective journals. The researcher employed the use of the interpretive and inductive methods to analyze …

Oedipus And The Stars, Kurt Fosso Nov 2019

Oedipus And The Stars, Kurt Fosso

New England Classical Journal

At OT 795 Oedipus’ recollection of measuring his fugitive course by the stars presents a double crux, concerning both the textual tradition’s dueling terms for that measurement and scholars’ related, opposed renderings of the phrase as literal or figurative. I argue Oedipus’ words can be taken literally to signify the techne of ancient celestial navigation, a metric of human knowhow versus the forces of fate and the divine.

The Free Education Project: Higher Education Funding, E2 Implementation, And Crowdsourcing Crypto Development, Louis Carter, John R. Ziegler, Ovidui Purice, Edward Lehner

Publications and Research

This short paper, written in three different sections, explores how a cryptocurrency’s issuance and network effects could fund higher education. Synthesizing research from the Bronx Community College Cryptocurrency Research Lab, Bernard Lietaer’s notion of creating money for the needs of society, lessons learned by Galia Benartzi and the Hearts Project, and an exploration of how communities coalesce around open-source cryptocurrency projects, the authors provide an overview of the problem of funding higher education, the ways in which money that is needed could be created, and the key components to building a highly effective developer community. These three distinct yet vitally …

Correction Factors For Kac–Moody Groups And T-Deformed Root Multiplicities, D. Muthiah, A. Puskás, Ian Whitehead Nov 2019

Correction Factors For Kac–Moody Groups And T-Deformed Root Multiplicities, D. Muthiah, A. Puskás, Ian Whitehead

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

We study a correction factor for Kac–Moody root systems which arises in the theory of p-adic Kac–Moody groups. In affine type, this factor is known, and its explicit computation is the content of the Macdonald constant term conjecture. The data of the correction factor can be encoded as a collection of polynomials mλ∈Z[t] indexed by positive imaginary roots λ. At t=0 these polynomials evaluate to the root multiplicities, so we consider mλ to be a t-deformation of mult(λ). We generalize the Peterson algorithm and the Berman–Moody formula for root multiplicities to compute mλ. As a consequence we deduce fundamental properties …
