Alain Badiou's Inaesthetic Critique Of Poetry, Yushen Wang Nov 2019

Alain Badiou's Inaesthetic Critique Of Poetry, Yushen Wang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The core of Badiou's concept of inaesthetics is to liberate art from philosophy and let it become an independent program of truth in contrast to philosophy. Among arts, poetry was once denounced by Plato, who thought it was an imitation of imitation and therefore unhelpful for the establishment of the Republic. Badiou, however, sets a high value on poetry from his inaesthetic perspective. From the poems of Stéphane Mallarmé, Paul Celan, and others, Badiou discovers a dialectical coexistence between poetry and mathematics. For him, modern poetry, as a form of thought, is able to verify itself. Being the task of …

Halving Iso(7) Supergravity, Adolfo Guarino, Javier Tarrío, Oscar J. Varela Nov 2019

Halving Iso(7) Supergravity, Adolfo Guarino, Javier Tarrío, Oscar J. Varela

All Physics Faculty Publications

Half-maximal, N = 4, sectors of D = 4 N = 8 supergravity with a dyonic ISO(7) gauging are investigated. We focus on a half-maximal sector including three vector multiplets, that arises as a certain SO(3)R-invariant sector of the full theory. We discuss the embedding of this sector into the largest half-maximal sector of the N = 8 supergravity retaining six vector multiplets. We also provide its canonical N = 4 formulation and show that, from this perspective, our model leads in its own right to a new explicit gauging of N = 4 supergravity. Finally, expressions for …

Testing A Decision Making Model For Nursing, Daniel Bruce Coble Nov 2019

Testing A Decision Making Model For Nursing, Daniel Bruce Coble

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to test a decision making model for nursing developed in a previous qualitative study. Concepts in the decision making model were creativity, experience, leadership, education, risk taking, and informatics. The Chinese philosophy of Cosmogony and chaos theory provided the theoretical framework for the model. Analysis of Decision Making in Nursing (ADMN), a tool developed for this study, incorporated a bipolar scale of 81 items. Pilot testing indicated adequate reliability and validity of the ADMN.

Academic Achievement In Children With New-Onset Seizures Or Asthma, Angela Marie Mcnelis Nov 2019

Academic Achievement In Children With New-Onset Seizures Or Asthma, Angela Marie Mcnelis

Dissertations

It has long been recognized that children with epilepsy have more learning difficulties in school than either children without seizures or children with other chronic disorders, such as asthma. Problems such as repeating a grade, receiving special services, and scoring poorly on standardized achievement tests are over-represented in children with epilepsy. Factors that lead to problems with academic underachievement are not well understood. Primary purposes of the study were to examine change in academic achievement over a 12-month period and to identify factors related to achievement in children with new-onset seizures. A secondary purpose was to examine differences in academic …

Crustal Density Variation Of The Eastern U.S., Henglei Zhang, Dhananjay Ravat, Anthony R. Lowry Nov 2019

Crustal Density Variation Of The Eastern U.S., Henglei Zhang, Dhananjay Ravat, Anthony R. Lowry

Earth and Environmental Sciences Research Data

EarthScope’s USArray Transportable Array (TA) has shortcomings for the purpose of interpreting geologic features of wavelengths less than the 70 km TA station spacing, but these can be overcome by using higher spatial resolution gravity data. In this study, we exploit USArray receiver functions to reduce non-uniqueness in the interpretation of gravity anomalies. We model gravity anomalies from previously-derived density variations of sedimentary basins, crustal Vp/Vs variation, Moho variation, and upper mantle density variation derived from body-wave imaging informed by surface wave tomography to estimate Vp/Vs. Although average densities and density contrasts for these seismic variations can be derived, …

3d-Printing And Machine Learning Control Of Soft Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite Actuators, James D. Carrico, Tucker Hermans, Kwang J. Kim, Kam K. Leang

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

This paper presents a new manufacturing and control paradigm for developing soft ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) actuators for soft robotics applications. First, an additive manufacturing method that exploits the fused-filament (3D printing) process is described to overcome challenges with existing methods of creating custom-shaped IPMC actuators. By working with ionomeric precursor material, the 3D-printing process enables the creation of 3D monolithic IPMC devices where ultimately integrated sensors and actuators can be achieved. Second, Bayesian optimization is used as a learning-based control approach to help mitigate complex time-varying dynamic effects in 3D-printed actuators. This approach overcomes the challenges with existing methods …

Meltwater Intrusions Reveal Mechanisms For Rapid Submarine Melt At A Tidewater Glacier, C. Kienholtz, D. A. Sutherland, R. H. Jackson, J. D. Nash, Jason M. Amundson, R. J. Motyka, D. Winters, E. Skyllingstad, E. C. Pettit Nov 2019

Meltwater Intrusions Reveal Mechanisms For Rapid Submarine Melt At A Tidewater Glacier, C. Kienholtz, D. A. Sutherland, R. H. Jackson, J. D. Nash, Jason M. Amundson, R. J. Motyka, D. Winters, E. Skyllingstad, E. C. Pettit

Faculty, Staff, and Students

Submarine melting has been implicated as a driver of glacier retreat and sea level rise, but to date melting has been difficult to observe and quantify. As a result, melt rates have been estimated from parameterizations that are largely unconstrained by observations, particularly at the near-vertical termini of tidewater glaciers. With standard coefficients, these melt parameterizations predict that ambient melting (the melt away from subglacial discharge outlets) is negligible compared to discharge-driven melting for typical tidewater glaciers. Here, we present new data from LeConte Glacier, Alaska, that challenges this paradigm. Using autonomous kayaks, we observe ambient meltwater intrusions that are …

Effect Of Ar(3p54p; 2p)+M -> Ar(3p54s; 1s)+M Branching Ratio On Optically Pumped Rare Gas Laser Performance, Daniel J. Emmons Ii, David E. Weeks Nov 2019

Effect Of Ar(3p54p; 2p)+M -> Ar(3p54s; 1s)+M Branching Ratio On Optically Pumped Rare Gas Laser Performance, Daniel J. Emmons Ii, David E. Weeks

Faculty Publications

Optically pumped rare gas laser performance is analyzed as a function of the Ar(3p54p; 2p) + M → Ar(3p54s; 1s) + M branching ratios. Due to the uncertainty in the branching ratios, a sensitivity study is performed to determine the effect on output and absorbed pump laser intensities. The analysis is performed using a radio frequency dielectric barrier discharge as the source of metastable production for a variety of Argon in Helium mixtures over pressures ranging from 200 to 500 Torr. Peak output laser intensities show a factor of 7 increase as the branching ratio is …

Lyrically Informed Performance: A Creative Study Of Desire And Motivation In Rodgers And Hammerstein's Musical Collaborations, Fiona Palazzi

University Honors Theses

The purpose of this paper is to outline the process I used to prepare a performance of ten songs written by Rodgers and Hammerstein, a famous composer and lyricist duo who wrote five notable works for the stage during the "Golden Age" of Musical Theater. I ask the question: how can I use evidence of motivation and desire in Hammerstein's lyrics to help inform my acting and vocal choice in the performance of each song? I investigate manifestations of desire in each of the song lyrics on my set list and reflect on the reality of applying my findings from …

Physics

Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) show a correlation between the size of the broad line region and the monochromatic continuum luminosity at 5100 Å, allowing black hole mass estimation based on single-epoch spectra. However, the validity of the correlation is yet to be clearly tested for high-luminosity AGNs. We present the first reverberation mapping results of the Seoul National University AGN Monitoring Project (SAMP), which is designed to focus on luminous AGNs for probing the high end of the size–luminosity relation. We report time lag measurements of two AGNs, namely, 2MASS J10261389+5237510 and SDSS J161911.24+501109.2, using the light curves obtained over …

Big “G” And Small “G”: The Variable Geometries Of Educational Governance In An Era Of Big Data, Tavis Jules

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

With the advent of the fourth industrial revolution and the intelligent economy, this conceptual chapter explores the evolution of educational governance from one based on governing by numbers and evidence-based governance to one constituted around governance by data or data-based educational governance. With the rise of markets and networks in education, Big Data, machine data, high-dimension data, open data, and dark data have consequences for the governance of national educational systems. In doing so, it draws attention to the rise of the algorithmization and computerization of educational policy-making. The author uses the concept of “blitzscaling”, aided by the conceptual framing …

Unpacking High-Impact Instructional Practices And Student Engagement In A Teacher Preparation Program, Raymond J. Rodriguez, Ekaterina Koubek

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The literature on SoTL contains numerous studies examining the relationship between High-Impact Practices (HIPs) as adopted by the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), student engagement, and student learning outcomes as measured on the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). To further understand how these practices might affect student engagement and learning within college courses, this study examined the relationship between HIPs, reported student engagement and reported learning outcomes in a teacher preservice program. Focus group interviews and a modified version of the NSSE survey were used to “unpack” how these practices related to student engagement and learning in …

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: In recent decades, the prevalence of obesity in children has increased dramatically. This worldwide epidemic has important consequences, including psychiatric, psychological and psychosocial disorders in childhood and increased risk of developing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) later in life. Treatment of obesity is difficult and children with excess weight are likely to become adults with obesity. These trends have led member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) to endorse a target of no increase in obesity in childhood by 2025.
Main body: Estimates of overweight in children aged under 5 years are available jointly from the United Nations Children's Fund …

Improving Medication Information Presentation Through Interactive Visualization In Mobile Apps: Human Factors Design, Don Roosan, Yan Li, Anandi Law, Huy Truong, Mazharul Karim, Jay Chok, Moom Roosan

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Background: Despite the detailed patient package inserts (PPIs) with prescription drugs that communicate crucial information about safety, there is a critical gap between patient understanding and the knowledge presented. As a result, patients may suffer from adverse events. We propose using human factors design methodologies such as hierarchical task analysis (HTA) and interactive visualization to bridge this gap. We hypothesize that an innovative mobile app employing human factors design with an interactive visualization can deliver PPI information aligned with patients’ information processing heuristics. Such an app may help patients gain an improved overall knowledge of medications.

High-Order Rogue Waves Of A Long-Wave–Short-Wave Model Of Newell Type, Jungchao Chen, Liangyuan Chen, Bao-Feng Feng, Ken-Ichi Maruno

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

The long-wave–short-wave (LWSW) model of Newell type is an integrable model describing the interaction between the gravity wave (long wave) and the capillary wave (short wave) for the surface wave of deep water under certain resonance conditions. In the present paper, we are concerned with rogue-wave solutions to the LWSW model of Newell type. By combining the Hirota’s bilinear method and the KP hierarchy reduction, we construct its general rational solution expressed by the determinant. It is found that the fundamental rogue wave for the short wave can be classified into three different patterns: bright, intermediate, and dark states, whereas …

Gamma-Ray Radiation Effects In Graphene-Based Transistors With H-Bn Nanometer Film Substrates, E. J. Cazalas, Michael R. Hogsed, S. R. Vangala, Michael R. Snure, John W. Mcclory

Faculty Publications

Radiation effects on graphene field effect transistors (GFETs) with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) thin film substrates are investigated using 60Co gamma-ray radiation. This study examines the radiation response using many samples with varying h-BN film thicknesses (1.6 and 20 nm thickness) and graphene channel lengths (5 and 10 μm). These samples were exposed to a total ionizing dose of approximately 1 Mrad(Si). I-V measurements were taken at fixed time intervals between irradiations and postirradiation. Dirac point voltage and current are extracted from the I-V measurements, as well as mobility, Dirac voltage hysteresis, and the total number of GFETs that remain …

On The Hamilton-Waterloo Problem: The Case Of Two Cycles Sizes Of Different Parity, Melissa S. Keranen, Adrian Pastine Nov 2019

On The Hamilton-Waterloo Problem: The Case Of Two Cycles Sizes Of Different Parity, Melissa S. Keranen, Adrian Pastine

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The Hamilton-Waterloo problem asks for a decomposition of the complete graph of order v into r copies of a 2-factor F1 and s copies of a 2-factor F2 such that r+s = v−1 2 . If F1 consists of m-cycles and F2 consists of n cycles, we say that a solution to (m, n)- HWP(v; r, s) exists. The goal is to find a decomposition for every possible pair (r, s). In this paper, we show that for odd x and y, there is a solution to (2kx, y)-HWP(vm; r, s) if gcd(x, y) ≥ 3, m ≥ 3, and …

Static Solid Relaxation Ordered Spectroscopy: Ss-Rosy, Gregory S. Boutis, Ravinath Kausik Nov 2019

Static Solid Relaxation Ordered Spectroscopy: Ss-Rosy, Gregory S. Boutis, Ravinath Kausik

Publications and Research

A two-dimensional pulse sequence is introduced for correlating nuclear magnetic resonance anisotropic chemical shifts to a relaxation time (e.g., T1) in solids under static conditions. The sequence begins with a preparatory stage for measuring relaxation times, and is followed by a multiple pulse sequence for homonuclear dipolar decoupling. Data analysis involves the use of Fourier transform, followed by a one-dimensional inverse Laplace transform for each frequency index. Experimental results acquired on solid samples demonstrate the general approach, and additional variations involving heteronuclear decoupling and magic angle spinning are discussed.
