Composite Nonparametric Tests In High Dimension, Alejandro G. Villasante Tezanos
Composite Nonparametric Tests In High Dimension, Alejandro G. Villasante Tezanos
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
This dissertation focuses on the problem of making high-dimensional inference for two or more groups. High-dimensional means both the sample size (n) and dimension (p) tend to infinity, possibly at different rates. Classical approaches for group comparisons fail in the high-dimensional situation, in the sense that they have incorrect sizes and low powers. Much has been done in recent years to overcome these problems. However, these recent works make restrictive assumptions in terms of the number of treatments to be compared and/or the distribution of the data. This research aims to (1) propose and investigate refined …
A Flexible Zero-Inflated Poisson Regression Model, Eric S. Roemmele
A Flexible Zero-Inflated Poisson Regression Model, Eric S. Roemmele
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
A practical problem often encountered with observed count data is the presence of excess zeros. Zero-inflation in count data can easily be handled by zero-inflated models, which is a two-component mixture of a point mass at zero and a discrete distribution for the count data. In the presence of predictors, zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) regression models are, perhaps, the most commonly used. However, the fully parametric ZIP regression model could sometimes be restrictive, especially with respect to the mixing proportions. Taking inspiration from some of the recent literature on semiparametric mixtures of regressions models for flexible mixture modeling, we propose a …
Utilizing Multi-Level Classification Techniques To Predict Adverse Drug Effects And Reactions, Victoria Puhl
Utilizing Multi-Level Classification Techniques To Predict Adverse Drug Effects And Reactions, Victoria Puhl
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Multi-class classification models are used to predict categorical response variables with more than two possible outcomes. A collection of multi-class classification techniques such as Multinomial Logistic Regression, Na\"{i}ve Bayes, and Support Vector Machine is used in predicting patients’ drug reactions and adverse drug effects based on patients’ demographic and drug administration. The newly released 2018 data on drug reactions and adverse drug effects from U.S. Food and Drug Administration are tested with the models. The applicability of model evaluation measures such as sensitivity, specificity and prediction accuracy in multi-class settings, are also discussed.

Structural Evolution Of The Eastern Anatolian Basins: An Example From Collisional To Postcollisional Tectonic Processes, Turkey, Ali̇ Yilmaz, Hüseyi̇n Yilmaz
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Eastern Anatolian Basins (EABs) started to develop on a mosaic, made up of forearc deposits of the Eastern Pontide Arc (EPA), continental metamorphic rocks of the Anatolian-Iranian Platform (AIP), and obducted ophiolitic units of the North Anatolian Ophiolitic Belt (NAOB) and Southeastern Anatolian Ophiolitic Belt (SAOB). The basement rocks of the East Anatolian Region represent a continental fragment positioned between the EPA to the north and the Arabian Platform to the south. In appearance, it can be said that there are many different basins in the Eastern Anatolian Region. This paper reports on three of them that were studied …

Primary Report Of First Documentation Of Mammal Footprints From The Late Oligocene Inthe Sivas Basin, Turkey, Beki̇r Levent Mesci̇, Ahmet Cem Erkman, Şaki̇r Önder Özkurt
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The footprints in this study, which were considered to have been made by ungulates, were discovered on mudstone that was approximately 5 cm thick, near an abundant mud-cracked plane located on the stratigraphic subsurface of the late Oligocene Karayün Formation, which crops out over wide areas in southern Sivas (Turkey) and has terrestrial, fluvial sediment characteristics. These ungulate footprints documented from the late Oligocene of the Karayün Formation in southern Sivas represent the first reported vertebrates in Anatolia. The footprints of three different species of ungulates were identified. The shapes, depth, and widths of the footprints provided some basic ichnotaxonomic …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Giant ventral incisional hernias (GVIHs) are hard to manage for surgeons. This problem was resolved in 1990 with the components separation technique (CST). We aimed to compare endoscopic and conventional CST for GVIHs and find a new anthropometric calculation.Materials and methods: In this prospective nonrandomized clinical trial, 21 patients were treated with endoscopic or conventional CST between 2012 and 2016. Eight patients (38.1%) were operated endoscopically and 13 (61.9%) conventionally on the basis of preoperative tomography results, hernia surface area (HSA), number of recent abdominal operations, comorbidities, and the presence or history of ostomy. Groups in which prosthetic material …

Incorporating User Data In Cross Boundary Trail Mangement: A Case Study Of The Foothills Trail Systemnear Wenatchee, Wa, Beth Macinko
All Master's Theses
Land managers for areas where recreation occurs balance minimizing impacts on the landscape with providing recreation opportunities. Use characteristics including type of use, use frequency, and use patterns have been shown to influence the severity of landscape impacts from recreation. Collecting and incorporating user data is critical to effective recreation management. The Foothills trail system is a nonmotorized, day use trail system adjacent to the city of Wenatchee, Washington that crosses public and private properties. This thesis obtained data on user demographics, use characteristics, user perceptions, and spatial use patterns through a questionnaire administered through a mixed method sampling approach …
The Challenges For A Closed-To-The-Public Animal Sanctuary: Prioritizing Animal Welfare While Engaging In Educational Community Outreach, Lisa Tweed
All Master's Theses
Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest is a small primate sanctuary in Cle Elum, Washington, and is presently home to seven chimpanzees who were retired from biomedical research. I used this sanctuary as a case study to find out how a closed-to-the-public sanctuary can engage in educational outreach without compromising the welfare of the residents. I employed a combination of semi-structured interviews of sanctuary personnel, ethnographic participant-observation as a volunteer caregiver, and an online survey offered to the local community to help me understand the goals and limitations of sanctuaries. I also designed and conducted two educational programs for local area schools as …

Recurrent Residual U-Net For Medical Image Segmentation, Md Zahangir Alom, Christopher Yakopcic, Mahmudul Hasan, Tarek M. Taha, Vijayan K. Asari
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Deep learning (DL)-based semantic segmentation methods have been providing state-of-the-art performance in the past few years. More specifically, these techniques have been successfully applied in medical image classification, segmentation, and detection tasks. One DL technique, U-Net, has become one of the most popular for these applications. We propose a recurrent U-Net model and a recurrent residual U-Net model, which are named RU-Net and R2U-Net, respectively. The proposed models utilize the power of U-Net, residual networks, and recurrent convolutional neural networks. There are several advantages to using these proposed architectures for segmentation tasks. First, a residual unit helps when training deep …

A Survey Of Techniques For Mobile Service Encrypted Traffic Classification Using Deep Learning, Pan Wang, Xuejiao Chen, Feng Ye, Zhixin Sun
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The rapid adoption of mobile devices has dramatically changed the access to various net- working services and led to the explosion of mobile service traffic. Mobile service traffic classification has been a crucial task that attracts strong interest in mobile network management and security as well as machine learning communities for past decades. However, with more and more adoptions of encryption over mobile services, it brings a lot of challenges about mobile traffic classification. Although classical machine learning approaches can solve many issues that port and payload-based methods cannot solve, it still has some limitations, such as time-consuming, costly handcrafted …
Decision Tree Based Approach For Assessing Inventory Control Under Demand Fluctuations, Yash Ulhas Gokhale
Decision Tree Based Approach For Assessing Inventory Control Under Demand Fluctuations, Yash Ulhas Gokhale
Master’s Theses - College of Engineering
"Procurement costs have a significant impact on the profits of a Value-add manufacturer. These profits, in turn, are heavily influenced by the business environment and ensuing market demands. Therefore, a procurement policy, that is responsive to business environment and ensuing market demands, can determine the profitability and business success of an organization. This thesis describes a methodology that can help an organization achieve this flexibility to changing business environment. The methodology develops a recursive simulation model for probabilistic demands reflecting the changing business environment. These demands and current procurement policy decide the associated profits for different business environments. The demands, …

A Physcialist Theory Of Managing Impediments To Democracy And Peace Building In The Balkans, Rory Conces
A Physcialist Theory Of Managing Impediments To Democracy And Peace Building In The Balkans, Rory Conces
Philosophy Faculty Publications
The post-conflict societies of Bosnia and Kosovo continue to be plagued by the deleterious effects of ethno-nationalism and ethnic enclaves. Unfortunately, this mix impedes both democracy and peace building within these Balkan countries. One way to promote such building is for these enclaves to collapse, thereby allowing multiethnic societies to develop. This essay proposes that enclaves be dealt with physically by ridding them of those evocative objects that help to create and maintain enclaves. By getting physical in this way, however, we find ourselves in a dilemma, caught on the horns of legality and expediency. Yet there is a promising …

Greedy Binary Particle Swarm Optimization For Multi- Objective Constrained Next Release Problem, Abeer Hamdy, Ali Mohamed
Greedy Binary Particle Swarm Optimization For Multi- Objective Constrained Next Release Problem, Abeer Hamdy, Ali Mohamed
Software Engineering
Software companies, that adopt agile methodologies in the development of a large and complex software product, encounter the problem of selecting the subset of requirements to be included in the next release of the product. This problem is known as the next release problem (NRP). NRP is identified as an NP-hard problem as it involves a set of conflicting objectives that need to be addressed. These objectives are as follows: (1) maximizing the customer satisfaction taking into consideration that each customer has an importance level to the company, and (2) minimizing the development cost such that it does not exceed …

Florida Science: The Science That Makes Florida Different, Terence W. Cavanaugh
Secondary Level Resources
This book was created to assist students with their understanding of how science occurs in Florida. When teaching science or any subject it’s important to remember to begin with the concrete and then move to the abstract. I have found that it has helped my students when I begin by teaching science concepts in a concrete manner and expand from there. For example, when I taught about topographic maps, the students were much more successful in their learning when I started with local topographic maps that included the school and the surrounding area than with places that had mountains or …

Changes In Walleye Fecundity And Egg Size Before, During, And After Rehabilitation Of The Red Lakes Fishery, Benjamin J. Miller, Benjamin D. Erb
Journal of Earth and Life Science
The Red Lakes in northern Minnesota experienced a major Walleye Sander vitreus fishery crash in the late 20th century, but has since recovered to record abundances and supports a major commercial and recreational fishery. Fecundity is an integral aspect of recruitment that can contribute greatly to the understanding of fishery population dynamics. To elucidate the effects of varying Walleye densities and exploitation rates on fecundity and egg size in years 1989 (overexploited fishery), 2004 (recovering fishery), and 2017 (recovered fishery), we analyzed linear models that related fecundity or egg size to morphological features for these three sampling periods. Walleyes were …
Interpretation-Neutral Integrated Information Theory, Kelvin J. Mcqueen
Interpretation-Neutral Integrated Information Theory, Kelvin J. Mcqueen
Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research
The integrated information theory (IIT) is a theory of consciousness that was originally formulated, and is standardly still expressed, in terms of controversial interpretations of its own ontological and epistemological basis. These form the orthodox interpretation of IIT. The orthodox epistemological interpretation is the axiomatic method, whereby IIT is ultimately derived from, justified by, and beholden to, a set of phenomenological axioms. The orthodox ontological interpretation is panpsychism, according to which consciousness is fundamental, intrinsic, and pervasive. In this paper it is argued that both components of the orthodox interpretation should be rejected. But IIT should not be rejected since …

"A Dark, Abiding, Signing Africanist Presence" In Walker Percy’S Dr. Tom More Novels, David Withun
The Coastal Review
Many of the tropes, commonplaces, symbols, and values used and reflected by American literary works written by white authors, as Toni Morrison writes, are “in fact responses to a dark, abiding, signing Africanist presence.” The black/white racial binary and racial différance that mark this presence inform the use of racialized characters as signifiers in the novels of Walker Percy. In the Dr. Tom More novels Love in the Ruins and The Thanatos Syndrome, Percy adopts racial symbolism as a means toward his critique of the American notion of “the pursuit of happiness.” In Love in the Ruins, Percy …

Motivation: Transcriptome-based computational drug repurposing has attracted considerable interest by bringing about faster and more cost-effective drug discovery. Nevertheless, key limitations of the current drug connectivity-mapping paradigm have been long overlooked, including the lack of effective means to determine optimal query gene signatures. Results: The novel approach Dr Insight implements a frame-breaking statistical model for the ‘hand-shake’ between disease and drug data. The genome-wide screening of concordantly expressed genes (CEGs) eliminates the need for subjective selection of query signatures, added to eliciting better proxy for potential disease-specific drug targets. Extensive comparisons on simulated and real cancer datasets have validated the …

Recovering A Random Variable From Conditional Expectations Using Reconstruction Algorithms For The Gauss Radon Transform, Jeremy Becnel, Daniel Riser-Espinoza
Faculty Publications
The Radon transform maps a function on n-dimensional Euclidean space onto its integral over a hyperplane. The fields of modern computerized tomography and medical imaging are fundamentally based on the Radon transform and the computer implementation of the inversion, or reconstruction, techniques of the Radon transform. In this work we use the Radon transform with a Gaussian measure to recover random variables from their conditional expectations. We derive reconstruction algorithms for random variables of unbounded support from samples of conditional expectations and discuss the error inherent in each algorithm.
Applications Of Centered Kernel Target Alignment In Inductive Logic Programming, Benjamin H. Ott
Applications Of Centered Kernel Target Alignment In Inductive Logic Programming, Benjamin H. Ott
Open Access Dissertations
This study aimed both to apply centered kernel target alignment (CKTA) to inductive logic programming (ILP) in several different ways and to apply a complete refinement operator in a practical setting. A new genetic algorithm (GA) results from the research, utilizing a complete, locally finite refinement operator and also incorporating CKTA both as a fitness score and as a means for the promotion of diversity. As a fitness score, CKTA can either be used standalone or as a contributor to a hybrid score which utilizes the accuracy (weighted or normal) of the learned logic hypothesis as well. In terms of …
