Community-Centered Sustainable Conservation And Ecotourism Planning In The Bossou Forest Reserve, Guinea, West Africa, Destina Samani Jan 2019

Community-Centered Sustainable Conservation And Ecotourism Planning In The Bossou Forest Reserve, Guinea, West Africa, Destina Samani

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Ecotourism management has evolved over the years towards responsible conservation of the natural environment, sustaining the well-being of local people, enriching personal experiences and increasing environmental awareness. The development of a forest reserve is characteristic of the management–visitor–host community interface and the attendant competing interests in the face of new challenges, ideas and theories. In particular, host community participation in the conservation of the forest space tends to breakdown under weak ecotourism management, partly evident by the imbalanced exploitation of ecosystem services resulting in wildlife and society’s inability to cope effectively with the changes (Walker et al., 2016).

The Bossou …

Navigating Cultural Differences Between Fieldwork Educators And Students, Tiana Brown, Norris Chin Jan 2019

Navigating Cultural Differences Between Fieldwork Educators And Students, Tiana Brown, Norris Chin

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Background Cultural competency is an awareness and incorporation of knowledge about individuals and groups of people into specific policies, practices, standards and attitudes by incorporating the client's personal views, values and belief (Suk, Oh, & Im, 2018). Although it is important for future health care professionals and faculty to understand our growing diverse population, there is little to no emphasis on improving the interactions of diverse students and their fieldwork educators. Currently, there is no literature that provides guidance on facilitating culturally competent interactions and challenges for fieldwork educators or students. The purpose of this project was to develop a …

Physical Therapy Treatment For A Patient With A Hip Fracture And Cognitive Impairments: A Case Report, Tracie Boehmlehner

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Background and Purpose: As the population shifts to include higher numbers of people in the elderly population, diseases and pathologies associated with geriatric populations will also increase. Two of these conditions are cognitive impairment and hip fractures. Hip fractures can be costly and life altering injuries. Treating patients with both of these conditions can pose a unique challenge to healthcare workers.

Case Description: The patient in this case study is a 78 year-old female who suffered a hip fracture secondary to a fall with a hip herniarthroplasty completed. She had many co-morbidities that are typical of an aging person such …

Characterizing The 2015 Indonesia Fire Event Using Modified Modis Aerosol Retrievals, Yingxi R. Shi, Robert C. Levy, Thomas F. Eck, Brad Fisher, Shana Mattoo, Lorraine A. Remer, Ilya Slutsker, Jianglong Zhang Jan 2019

Characterizing The 2015 Indonesia Fire Event Using Modified Modis Aerosol Retrievals, Yingxi R. Shi, Robert C. Levy, Thomas F. Eck, Brad Fisher, Shana Mattoo, Lorraine A. Remer, Ilya Slutsker, Jianglong Zhang

Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

The Indonesian fire and smoke event of 2015 was an extreme episode that affected public health and caused severe economic and environmental damage. The MODIS Dark Target (DT) aerosol algorithm, developed for global applications, significantly underestimated regional aerosol optical depth (AOD) during this episode. The larger-than-global-averaged uncertainties in the DT product over this event were due to both an overly zealous set of masks that mistook heavy smoke plumes for clouds and/or inland water, and also an aerosol model developed for generic global aerosol conditions. Using Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) Version 3 sky inversions of local AERONET stations, we created …

Contextualizing Sexual Assault Data Collection On College Campuses: A Socio-Technical Approach, Anushikha Sharma Jan 2019

Contextualizing Sexual Assault Data Collection On College Campuses: A Socio-Technical Approach, Anushikha Sharma

Honors Theses

Sexual assault is a rampant issue on college campuses in the United States. Colleges and universities use a variety of survey instruments to collect data regarding sexual assault as a means to improve campus culture, policies, and resources. These instruments contain a wealth of associated information in the form of metadata, that is, data about data.

This project takes a human-centered socio-technical approach to understanding the data collection processes associated with sexual assault, specifically, on the campus of Bucknell University. By identifying the underlying metadata within the data collection processes, this research contextualizes and critiques the process of data collection, …

Analyzing The Impact Of Home Locales On Access To Tertiary Education; Trends In Students’ Access To Bucknell University, Emily Tevebaugh Jan 2019

Analyzing The Impact Of Home Locales On Access To Tertiary Education; Trends In Students’ Access To Bucknell University, Emily Tevebaugh

Honors Theses

Access to postsecondary education has been found in previous studies to be correlated with socioeconomic status as well as with various other indicators, such as parents’ education levels and cultural expectations. However, addressing the impact of home locales and geographical proximity to colleges in addition to these individual characteristics is a crucial part of understanding college access. In this honors thesis, the following questions will be examined: how has access to college and the decision to matriculate changed in recent years? How does distance from colleges and differing characteristics of home locales influence acceptance to a university and the decision …

Positivity Among P-Partition Generating Functions Of Partially Ordered Sets, Nate Lesnevich Jan 2019

Positivity Among P-Partition Generating Functions Of Partially Ordered Sets, Nate Lesnevich

Honors Theses

We find necessary and separate sufficient conditions for the difference between two labeled partially ordered set's (poset) partition generating functions to be positive in the fundamental basis. We define the notion of a jump sequence for a poset and show how different conditions on the jump sequences of two posets are necessary for those posets to have an order relation in the fundamental basis. Our sufficient conditions are of two types. First, we show how manipulating a poset's Hasse diagram produces a poset that is greater according to the fundamental basis. Secondly, we also provide tools to explain posets that …

Bridging Act-R And Project Malmo, Developing Models Of Behavior In Complex Environments, David M. Schwartz Jan 2019

Bridging Act-R And Project Malmo, Developing Models Of Behavior In Complex Environments, David M. Schwartz

Honors Theses

Cognitive architectures such as ACT-R provide a system for simulating the mind and human behavior. On their own they model decision making of an isolated agent. However, applying a cognitive architecture to a complex environment yields more interesting results about how people make decisions in more realistic scenarios. Furthermore, cognitive architectures enable researchers to study human behavior in dangerous tasks which cannot be tested because they would harm participants. Nonetheless, these architectures aren’t commonly applied to such environments as they don’t come with one. It is left to the researcher to develop a task environment for their model. The difficulty …

Late Devonian Sedimentary Record Of Appalachian Tectonics And Erosion: Geochronology And Geochemistry Of Detrital Muscovite And Zircon From Central Pennsylvania Strata, Cole T. Gardner Jan 2019

Late Devonian Sedimentary Record Of Appalachian Tectonics And Erosion: Geochronology And Geochemistry Of Detrital Muscovite And Zircon From Central Pennsylvania Strata, Cole T. Gardner

Honors Theses

Foreland basin sediment deposition in North-Central Pennsylvania during Late Devonian time records erosion of hinterland source terranes exhumed during regional plate convergence, including the collisional Acadian orogeny. The Catskill clastic wedge preserves a coarsening-upwards stratigraphic succession from marine to fluvial environments associated with sediment progradation and sea-level regression, yet depositional timescales and quantitative provenance data are largely unconstrained.

Detailed facies analysis of eight outcrops spanning >2 km of stratigraphy in Lycoming Co., Pennsylvania documents distinct upsection changes, interpreted to reflect changes in depositional environments consistent with previous sedimentology of the Catskill clastic wedge. Stratigraphy displays a transition from nearshore marine …

Stability Analysis Of Transfer Alignment Filter Based On The Μ Theory, Lihua Zhu, Yu Wang, Lei Wang, Zhiqiang Wu Jan 2019

Stability Analysis Of Transfer Alignment Filter Based On The Μ Theory, Lihua Zhu, Yu Wang, Lei Wang, Zhiqiang Wu

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The performance of the transfer alignment has great impact on inertial navigation systems. As the transfer alignment is generally implemented using a filter to compensate the errors, its accuracy, rapidity and anti-disturbance capability are key properties to evaluate the filtering process. In terms of the superiority in dealing with the noise, H∞ filtering has been used to improve the anti-disturbance capability of the transfer alignment. However, there is still a need to incorporate system uncertainty due to various dynamic conditions. Based on the structural value theory, a robustness stability analysis method has been proposed for the transfer alignment to evaluate …

Counterfactual Conditional Analysis Using The Centipede Game, Ahmed Bilal Jan 2019

Counterfactual Conditional Analysis Using The Centipede Game, Ahmed Bilal

CMC Senior Theses

The Backward Induction strategy for the Centipede Game leads us to a counterfactual reasoning paradox, The Centipede Game paradox. The counterfactual reasoning proving the backward induction strategy for the game appears to rely on the players in the game not choosing that very same backward induction strategy. The paradox is a general paradox that applies to backward induction reasoning in sequential, perfect information games. Therefore, the paradox is not only problematic for the Centipede Game, but it also affects counterfactual reasoning solutions in games similar to the Centipede Game. The Centipede Game is a prime illustration of this paradox in …

Mean Value Theorems For Riemannian Manifolds Via The Obstacle Problem, Brian Benson, Ivan Blank, Jeremy Lecrone

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We develop some of the basic theory for the obstacle problem on Riemannian manifolds, and we use it to establish a mean value theorem. Our mean value theorem works for a very wide class of Riemannian manifolds and has no weights at all within the integral.

The Range And Valence Of A Real Smirnov Function, Timothy Ferguson, William T. Ross Jan 2019

The Range And Valence Of A Real Smirnov Function, Timothy Ferguson, William T. Ross

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We give a complete description of the possible ranges of real Smirnov functions (quotients of two bounded analytic functions on the open unit disk where the denominator is outer and such that the radial boundary values are real almost everywhere on the unit circle). Our techniques use the theory of unbounded symmetric Toeplitz operators, some general theory of unbounded symmetric operators, classical Hardy spaces, and an application of the uniformization theorem. In addition, we completely characterize the possible valences for these real Smirnov functions when the valence is finite. To do so we construct Riemann surfaces we call disk trees …

Perturbed Obstacle Problems In Lipschitz Domains: Linear Stability And Nondegeneracy In Measure, Ivan Blank, Jeremy Lecrone Jan 2019

Perturbed Obstacle Problems In Lipschitz Domains: Linear Stability And Nondegeneracy In Measure, Ivan Blank, Jeremy Lecrone

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider the classical obstacle problem on bounded, connected Lipschitz domains D⊂Rn. We derive quantitative bounds on the changes to contact sets under general perturbations to both the right-hand side and the boundary data for obstacle problems. In particular, we show that the Lebesgue measure of the symmetric difference between two contact sets is linearly comparable to the L1-norm of perturbations in the data.

Switching Majors – Into And Out Of Economics, Tisha L. N. Emerson, Kimmarie Mcgoldrick Jan 2019

Switching Majors – Into And Out Of Economics, Tisha L. N. Emerson, Kimmarie Mcgoldrick

Economics Faculty Publications

Using student transcripts from six institutions over a 23-year timespan, the authors investigate the movement of students into and out of the economics major. Considerable movement between majors occurs with 83 percent of economics graduates switching in after their first principles course. These eventual majors come from a variety of sources, but primarily from business, engineering, science & math. In an absolute sense, weaker students (as measured by cumulative GPA) switch into economics. However, students appear to move to disciplines of relative academic strength (as indicated by relative grades). While females from other majors are less likely to switch into …

Total Sunspot Number Calculation Based On Flare Production Potential Of Sunspot Groups: Reconstruction Of Ssn And Its Relation To Some Geomagnetic Indices, Ahmet Burak Karslioğlu, Burçi̇n Dönmez, Ali̇ Kilçik Jan 2019

Total Sunspot Number Calculation Based On Flare Production Potential Of Sunspot Groups: Reconstruction Of Ssn And Its Relation To Some Geomagnetic Indices, Ahmet Burak Karslioğlu, Burçi̇n Dönmez, Ali̇ Kilçik

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this study, we modified the previously introduced X-ray flare production potential (FPP) of each modified Zurich sunspot group based on its X-ray flare peak flux. Then, using these FPPs, the daily total sunspot number (Zurich number) calculation equation was modified; thus, new sunspot number data (CRz) were produced. We also compared ISSN and CRz with some geomagnetic indices (Dst, the maximum CME speed, and Ap indices). We found that the CRz data describe the geomagnetic indices quite well compared to ISSN. By using the regression equation between CRz and the sunspot area, the CRz dataset was recalculated back to …

Thz Applications Of Multimode Laser Diodes: A Review, Turgut Öztürk, Osamu Morikawa Jan 2019

Thz Applications Of Multimode Laser Diodes: A Review, Turgut Öztürk, Osamu Morikawa

Turkish Journal of Physics

Investigations are ongoing to develop cheaper THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) systems. In this context, many studies have been published in which multimode laser diodes (MLDs) are used as light sources in THz- TDS systems. There is another method for cost-reduction. Photomixing employs two single-mode LDs and does not require a pulse laser, and then realizes a reduced-cost system. A comprehensive report has been presented by examining the work done up to now. In these studies, it has been shown that the characteristics of MLDs, the effects of antenna structures on THz signal production, the difficulty of collimation of the MLD …

Uncertainty Theory Based Reliability-Centric Cyber-Physical System Design, Houbing Song, Ya Jiang, Mingzhe Wang, Xun Jiao, Hui Kong, Rui Wang, Yongxin Liu, Jian Wang, Jiaguang Sun Jan 2019

Uncertainty Theory Based Reliability-Centric Cyber-Physical System Design, Houbing Song, Ya Jiang, Mingzhe Wang, Xun Jiao, Hui Kong, Rui Wang, Yongxin Liu, Jian Wang, Jiaguang Sun

Publications

Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are built from, and depend upon, the seamless integration of software and hardware components. The most important challenge in CPS design and verification is to design CPS to be reliable in a variety of uncertainties, i.e., unanticipated and rapidly evolving environments and disturbances. The costs, delays and reliability of the designed CPS are highly dependent on software-hardware partitioning in the design. The key challenges in partitioning CPSs is that it is difficult to formalize reliability characterization in the same way as the uncertain cost and time delay.

In this paper, we propose a new CPS design paradigm …

Recent Pto Guidance Charts A New Course Through The Patent Eligibility Quagmire, Christopher M. Holman Jan 2019

Recent Pto Guidance Charts A New Course Through The Patent Eligibility Quagmire, Christopher M. Holman

Faculty Works

In a span of four years, 2010-2014, the U.S. Supreme Court issued four decisions that have dramatically altered patent eligibility jurisprudence: Bilski, Mayo, Myriad, and Alice. Ever since Bilski was decided, the PTO has struggled to apply the new patent eligibility jurisprudence in a consistent and predictable manner. The two part framework for assessing patent eligibility, as set for in Alice and Mayo, is stated at a high level of abstraction, and the Supreme Court has given little concrete guidance as to how it is to be applied beyond the specific claims at issue in its precedent. At times, the …

Composite Nonparametric Tests In High Dimension, Alejandro G. Villasante Tezanos Jan 2019

Composite Nonparametric Tests In High Dimension, Alejandro G. Villasante Tezanos

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

This dissertation focuses on the problem of making high-dimensional inference for two or more groups. High-dimensional means both the sample size (n) and dimension (p) tend to infinity, possibly at different rates. Classical approaches for group comparisons fail in the high-dimensional situation, in the sense that they have incorrect sizes and low powers. Much has been done in recent years to overcome these problems. However, these recent works make restrictive assumptions in terms of the number of treatments to be compared and/or the distribution of the data. This research aims to (1) propose and investigate refined …

A Flexible Zero-Inflated Poisson Regression Model, Eric S. Roemmele Jan 2019

A Flexible Zero-Inflated Poisson Regression Model, Eric S. Roemmele

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

A practical problem often encountered with observed count data is the presence of excess zeros. Zero-inflation in count data can easily be handled by zero-inflated models, which is a two-component mixture of a point mass at zero and a discrete distribution for the count data. In the presence of predictors, zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) regression models are, perhaps, the most commonly used. However, the fully parametric ZIP regression model could sometimes be restrictive, especially with respect to the mixing proportions. Taking inspiration from some of the recent literature on semiparametric mixtures of regressions models for flexible mixture modeling, we propose a …

Utilizing Multi-Level Classification Techniques To Predict Adverse Drug Effects And Reactions, Victoria Puhl Jan 2019

Utilizing Multi-Level Classification Techniques To Predict Adverse Drug Effects And Reactions, Victoria Puhl

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Multi-class classification models are used to predict categorical response variables with more than two possible outcomes. A collection of multi-class classification techniques such as Multinomial Logistic Regression, Na\"{i}ve Bayes, and Support Vector Machine is used in predicting patients’ drug reactions and adverse drug effects based on patients’ demographic and drug administration. The newly released 2018 data on drug reactions and adverse drug effects from U.S. Food and Drug Administration are tested with the models. The applicability of model evaluation measures such as sensitivity, specificity and prediction accuracy in multi-class settings, are also discussed.

Structural Evolution Of The Eastern Anatolian Basins: An Example From Collisional To Postcollisional Tectonic Processes, Turkey, Ali̇ Yilmaz, Hüseyi̇n Yilmaz Jan 2019

Structural Evolution Of The Eastern Anatolian Basins: An Example From Collisional To Postcollisional Tectonic Processes, Turkey, Ali̇ Yilmaz, Hüseyi̇n Yilmaz

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Eastern Anatolian Basins (EABs) started to develop on a mosaic, made up of forearc deposits of the Eastern Pontide Arc (EPA), continental metamorphic rocks of the Anatolian-Iranian Platform (AIP), and obducted ophiolitic units of the North Anatolian Ophiolitic Belt (NAOB) and Southeastern Anatolian Ophiolitic Belt (SAOB). The basement rocks of the East Anatolian Region represent a continental fragment positioned between the EPA to the north and the Arabian Platform to the south. In appearance, it can be said that there are many different basins in the Eastern Anatolian Region. This paper reports on three of them that were studied …

Primary Report Of First Documentation Of Mammal Footprints From The Late Oligocene Inthe Sivas Basin, Turkey, Beki̇r Levent Mesci̇, Ahmet Cem Erkman, Şaki̇r Önder Özkurt

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The footprints in this study, which were considered to have been made by ungulates, were discovered on mudstone that was approximately 5 cm thick, near an abundant mud-cracked plane located on the stratigraphic subsurface of the late Oligocene Karayün Formation, which crops out over wide areas in southern Sivas (Turkey) and has terrestrial, fluvial sediment characteristics. These ungulate footprints documented from the late Oligocene of the Karayün Formation in southern Sivas represent the first reported vertebrates in Anatolia. The footprints of three different species of ungulates were identified. The shapes, depth, and widths of the footprints provided some basic ichnotaxonomic …
