Spanish Nominalizations And Case Assignment, Dr. Jeff Renaud, Tania Leal Oct 2019

Spanish Nominalizations And Case Assignment, Dr. Jeff Renaud, Tania Leal

Celebration of Learning

Nominalizations are syntactic structures wherein verbal roots co-occur with verbal and nominal properties, classifying them as verbal (VN) (El andar el niño tan tarde) or nominal (NN) (El andar errabundo del niño). While NNs mark agents genitive (del niño), VNs require nominative agents (el niño). NNs co-occur with adjectives (errabundo), whereas VNs co-occur with adverbs (tan tarde). Alexiadou et al. (2011) posit separate syntactic structures for the two. In this study, we investigate via self-paced reading task the types of case available in each structure, providing evidence of …

Deep Neural Network Based Iterative Self-Taught Learning On Text Mining, Xiangwen Liu Oct 2019

Deep Neural Network Based Iterative Self-Taught Learning On Text Mining, Xiangwen Liu

Theses and Dissertations

[Motivation] Machine learning and deep learning models is the main methodology for discovering hidden knowledge of data. Data plays a significant role in the training process. However, lack of data especially labeled data is precious due to accessibility and high cost. How to use the abundant unlabeled data to enhance the downstream learning process on labeled data is an urgent task in machine learning and pattern recognition. [Methods] An STL (Self-taught learning) model is proposed in this dissertation, which can successfully learn features from downloaded unlabeled text and enhance the downstream tasks on labeled text. In addition, DLI-IT (Drug labeling …

Evaluation Method Packaging Shapes Kansei Based On Computing With Words, Ning Tingzhou, Zhang Jinzhi, Ge Meiqin

Food and Machinery

In order to accurately reflect the uncertainty of consumers' perceptual perception, this paper describes consumers' subjective judgment with hesitant fuzzy linguistic terminology set, analyses its operation rules, and constructs hesitant fuzzy CWW(computing with words) model. The case study shows that the aggregation of consumers' perceptual preferences in hesitant fuzzy terms and the realization of information aggregation through linguistic computation can help accurately reflect consumers' subjective perception, reduce consumers' uncertainty in perceptual judgment of packaging shape and support industrial designers to deal with consumers’ kansei opinions more accurately.

Critical Pedagogy Of Discomfort In Community-Based Learning: Kenyan Students' Experiences, Charlene A. Vanleeuwen, Lori E. Weeks, Linyuan Guo-Brennan

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Community-based learning (CBL) is employed as a pedagogical approach in professional programs globally; however, transferability of Eurocentric CBL models and theory to university settings outside the global north is under-examined. Adopting critical hermeneutics as the theoretical and methodological framework, this study explored the meaning of community-based learning (CBL) to Kenyan university students in a human services program and examined the complexity of students’ difficult learning experiences in making connections between classroom learning and praxis in Kenyan communities. Data were collected from six university students following 12-week placements with community organizations in Kenya. Findings revealed disciplinary, historical, cultural and extra-linguistic factors …

Researching Education In The Age Of Transnational Migration: Towards A New Research Agenda, Shibao Guo Oct 2019

Researching Education In The Age Of Transnational Migration: Towards A New Research Agenda, Shibao Guo

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

This paper is offered as work in progress to stimulate our thinking about the changing nature of comparative and international education in the age of transnational migration. It seems clear that the shifting paradigm of transnationalism has challenged the rigid, territorial nationalism, the understanding of borders and national identities. It is making cultural boundaries and identities porous, hybrid, and dialogic. In this paper I emphasize how comparative and international education has to be rethought in the context of transnational migration as a multidirectional process where diverse identities, forms of attachment and belonging inscribe the experiences of people as they move …

Effects Of Social-Cognitive Intervention For Aggressive Deaf Children: The Coping Power Program, John E. Lochmann, David P. Fitzgerald, Stephen M. Gage, Kassie M. Kanaly, Janet M. Whidby, Tammy D. Barry, Dustin H. Pardini, Heather Mcelory

JADARA

A substantial knowledge base exists regarding the social-cognitive and behavioral correlates of aggression among hearing children; however, less is known regarding these relationships among deaf children. Among aggressive hearing children, social-cognitive deficits result in poor social problem solving and increased aggressive behavior. Among aggressive deaf children, both poor social problem solving and communication difficulties are thought to lead to aggressive behavior. The Coping Power Program has demonstrated effectiveness as an intervention for aggressive hearing children. This year-long multicomponent program was adapted for use with deaf children and included both child groups and teacher and dormitory staff consultation. Study participants were …
