English Language Literacy Development In Deaf Individuals: The Role Of Environmental Factors, Brooke Harding, Mark W. Tanner Oct 2019

English Language Literacy Development In Deaf Individuals: The Role Of Environmental Factors, Brooke Harding, Mark W. Tanner

JADARA

Learning to read and write plays a significant role in children's linguistic and cognitive development. However, prelingually deaf children born into hearing families face immense linguistic, social, and emotional obstacles in the acquisition of reading and writing skills (Swisher,1989). This research was carried out to gain first hand information on the nature of literacy acquisition by deaf individuals. A case study approach was employed in order to investigate factors contributing to two prelingually deaf adults' acquisition of literacy in English. Findings from this study showed the significance of the home and school settings as learning environments which either enhanced or …

Residential Collective Building Facilities For Reintegration Of Repatriated People In Ferizaj, Labinot Mehmeti, Lulzim Beqiri

UBT International Conference

In recent years in Kosovo, there has been a trend for many Kosovars to sell all their property and move out of Kosovo for a better future.

But many of them cannot find themselves there or the asylum seeker does not accept them as Kosovo is not part of the country at risk of crisis.

They spend some isolated time there and many seek to return to Kosovo but have no way of integrating as most have nowhere to return.

Kosovo has done little for this category of people who according to statistics make up a very large population.

Fan Noli, The Master Of Oratory And Politics, Ardita Dylgjeri, Irgen Xhyra

UBT International Conference

Fan S. Noli, one of the most distinguished personalities of the Albanian nation, is defined as the best-known figure of literature, politics, religious activity and culture not only in our country, but even elsewhere, in different international areas in which he had the opportunity to represent Albania as a country and as an entity. He is remembered as a person of alternatives, contradictions, inner conflicts and tensions, as a man of state who sacrificed a lot to reach his goals and ambitions, which were endless. Logos and pathos were to be depicted as some crucial elements of his oratory and …

An Overview Of The Legal Rights Of Culturally Deaf Criminal Suspects, Katrina R. Miller, Mccay Vernon Oct 2019

An Overview Of The Legal Rights Of Culturally Deaf Criminal Suspects, Katrina R. Miller, Mccay Vernon

JADARA

The majority of culturally deaf individuals who become suspects in a criminal investigation are persons who have limited understanding of legal terminology and procedures. Despite legal safeguards such as the Miranda Warnings and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Mirandizing these individuals continues to present unique challenges to law enforcement due to the diverse educational and communication abilities of the deaf population. This discussion will focus on legally established civil rights of signing deaf suspects in relation to the administration of the Miranda Warnings and other legal proceedings.

Implementation Of Intercultural Education In The Republic Of North Macedonia, Natka Jankova Oct 2019

Implementation Of Intercultural Education In The Republic Of North Macedonia, Natka Jankova

UBT International Conference

The intense nature of intercultural processes in today's society alters communication at a fundamental level - both in practice and in behavior. Modern socio and psycholinguistic theories call for intercultural discourse to be the key in interpreting social interactions among people in global society. At the same time, it is normal to change the requirements of individual competence, understood as a complex of knowledge, skills and attitudes, allowing the individual to deal effectively with situations that are increasingly determined by cultural differences. This paper points out that the learning process should extend from the teaching individual grammatical structures and theoretical …

Multicultural Consolidation Through Consociational De- Mocracy, Xhemail Çupi Oct 2019

Multicultural Consolidation Through Consociational De- Mocracy, Xhemail Çupi

UBT International Conference

The consensus in multicultural societies such as North Macedonia

may not be the same as in states with a homogeneous liberal culture. The "pow- er-sharing" model that emerged from a war crisis and a peace Agreement

acknowledges the division of society which is in the process of consolidation. The Elite consensual culture in the sense of Liphart's "spirit of adaptation and compromise" has been considered necessary for democratic consolidation, by

not neglecting the power of voters to elect their political leaders. North Macedo- nia can have a thriving multicultural Democracy only if it builds an authentic

consensual model of power-sharing …

A Comparison Of The Storage-Only Deficit And Joint Mechanism Deficit Hypotheses Of The Verbal Working Memory Storage Capacity Limitation Of Children With Developmental Language Disorder, James W. Montgomery, Ronald B. Gillam, Julia L. Evans, Sarah Schwartz, Jamison D. Fargo

Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education Faculty Publications

Purpose: The storage-only deficit and joint mechanism deficit hypotheses are two possible explanations of the verbal working memory (vWM) storage capacity limitation of school-age children with developmental language disorder (DLD). We assessed the merits of each hypothesis in a large group of children with DLD and a group of same-age typically developing (TD) children.

Method: Participants were 117 children with DLD and 117 propensity-matched TD children 7-11 years of age. Children completed tasks indexing vWM capacity, verbal short-term storage, sustained attention, attention switching, and lexical long-term memory (LTM).

Results: For the DLD group, all of the mechanisms jointly explained 26.5% …

We Can Get There: Understanding The High School Experience Of Latin@S In A Large Suburban School District, Octavio Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations

Success in school is something that every student tries and accomplishes in different ways, but this is not a simple matter of just demonstrating academic success. Students may have the best grades, but if they do not master the “college student” (Collier, Morgan, 2004) role, many students may not succeed. When students master this role, it will help them understand the different expectations professors may have and then will be able to apply their academic skills effectively and help them meet these expectations. This is something that many students know and understand, and this information is not passed on to …

Undiagnosing Iphis: How The Lack Of Trauma In John Gower’S “Iphis And Iante” Reinforces A Subversive Trans Narrative, C Janecek Oct 2019

Undiagnosing Iphis: How The Lack Of Trauma In John Gower’S “Iphis And Iante” Reinforces A Subversive Trans Narrative, C Janecek

Accessus

Trauma has long played a role in queer narratives, including Ovid’s “Iphis and Ianthe”, which many scholars have interpreted as reinforcing heteronormativity through Iphis’s transformation into a man in order to marry Ianthe. However, I argue that John Gower’s rendition of this tale reframes Iphis as a trans man and allows us to understand the poem as a subversive trans narrative that revolts against cisnormative conceptions of gender. Utilizing Judith Butler’s writing on the medicalization of gender, I explore the relationship between trauma, performance, and gender within the Ovidian and Gowerian versions of Iphis.

Multimodal Composition And Digital Technology: Investigating The Out-Of-Class Experiences Of Students In A First-Year Composition Class, Jennifer Morgan Sims Oct 2019

Multimodal Composition And Digital Technology: Investigating The Out-Of-Class Experiences Of Students In A First-Year Composition Class, Jennifer Morgan Sims

English Language and Literature ETDs

This study explores how first-year students in a multimodal composition class use digital technology outside of class to complete their projects. The tendency in Composition studies to characterize students as “self-teaching” users of technology may obscure complex out-of-class experiences, so this study analyzes data from project reflections of 19 first-year students completing digital multimodal compositions to gain insight into their practices. Qualitative analysis reveals that the technical problems students encountered tended to be frequent and repetitive, and some problems were exacerbated by conflicts between the assignment requirements and the capacity of the technology required. Students tended to use trial-and-error methods …
