Communication Style In Medical Crowdfunding: Effect Of Emotional Framing And Updates Frequency On Funding And Emotional Support, Onochie Fan-Osuala

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

Despite the rise of medical crowdfunding and its benefits to patients including reducing financial hardships and providing emotional social support, limited attention has been paid to how a campaign organizer can drive performance. In this study, we investigate how the communication style used in a medical crowdfunding campaign can affect both the funding performance and emotional support received. We find that emotional framing and frequent updates have a positive effect on funding and emotional support and discuss the implications.

Transposals Between U.S. Place Names, Eric Tentarelli

Word Ways

In Word Ways in November 1973, Dmitri Borgmann searched for names of U.S. Cities, towns, or villages that were transposals of each other. The longest well-mixed pair he found consisted of 9-letter names: MASTERSON, Texas, and SEARSMONT, Maine. It is worthwhile to revisit this topic in hopes of finding longer examples.

Can Mystical Peace Contribute To Global Peace?, Peter Gan Nov 2019

Can Mystical Peace Contribute To Global Peace?, Peter Gan

Peace and Conflict Studies

Testimonial reports of mystics highlight an experience of peace in the midst of their mystical encounters, despite claiming that these encounters resist description. What I intend to do is to explore ways in which mystical peace, in combination with several principal features of the mystical life, is able to afford some special means in the initiation and building of peace in the world. These special or unique means rest on the distinctive traits of what mysticism harbors; traits such as infinity, all-encompassingness, ultimacy, and paradox.

Audience Awareness In The Writing Center: Guiding Introductory Writing Students With More Directive Comments, Samantha Clem

Writing Center Analysis Papers

Looking at the demographics of the students utilizing the writing center (WC) at a university in the US mountain west, the author questions whether the commenting styles in which WC tutors are trained accurately address the needs of the user population. Data on what courses WC visitors are enrolled in shows that the majority of WC user are introductory English students, with 70% of users being enrolled in one of the two required introductory level English courses (ENGL 1010 or ENGL 2010). Tutor training focuses on facilitative commenting styles, tactics that may not be effective for this given population of …

Can "Slacktivism" Work? Perceived Power Differences Moderate The Relationship Between Social Media Activism And Collective Action Intentions Through Positive Affect, Mindi D. Foster, Eden J.V. Hennessey, Benjamin T. Blankenship, Abigail Stewart Nov 2019

Can "Slacktivism" Work? Perceived Power Differences Moderate The Relationship Between Social Media Activism And Collective Action Intentions Through Positive Affect, Mindi D. Foster, Eden J.V. Hennessey, Benjamin T. Blankenship, Abigail Stewart

Psychology Faculty Publications

We argue that the often-used critique of social media activism as merely a ‘feel-good’ mechanism can be countered by conceptualizing social media activism as a necessary type of collective action (i.e., consensus mobilization), incorporating theory on the benefits of positive feelings for activism, and by examining how power may affect these relationships. Women from two different samples (MTurk and university) were randomly assigned to recall a high- versus low-power experience, view real-world events of sexism, and then complete questionnaires assessing endorsement of social media activism, positive affect, and collective action intentions. A dual moderated mediation analyses at the second stage …

Computing Without Computing: Dna Version, Vladik Kreinovich, Julio C. Urenda Nov 2019

Computing Without Computing: Dna Version, Vladik Kreinovich, Julio C. Urenda

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The traditional DNA computing schemes are based on using or simulating DNA-related activity. This is similar to how quantum computers use quantum activities to perform computations. Interestingly, in quantum computing, there is another phenomenon known as computing without computing, when, somewhat surprisingly, the result of the computation appears without invoking the actual quantum processes. In this chapter, we show that similar phenomenon is possible for DNA computing: in addition to the more traditional way of using or simulating DNA activity, we can also use DNA inactivity to solve complex problems. We also show that while DNA computing without …

“Unfair Or Unconscionable”: A New Approach To Time-Barred Debt Collection Under The Fdcpa, Jon D. Fish Nov 2019

“Unfair Or Unconscionable”: A New Approach To Time-Barred Debt Collection Under The Fdcpa, Jon D. Fish

University of Chicago Law Review

Since the 1990s, the trade in second-hand debt has exploded. Debt collectors now relentlessly pursue decades-old debts, purchased for pennies on the dollar from primary creditors. To avoid the bar that statutes of limitations place on judicial enforcement of these debts, third-party debt collectors seek “acknowledgment” from unwitting consumers, which resets the limitations periods under state law. Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), federal courts have struggled to deal with these attempts at resetting the statutes of limitations—a practice that often feels inherently unfair. So far, courts have focused on whether collection attempts have violated the FDCPA’s ban …

Fourth Amendment Textualism, Jeffrey Bellin Nov 2019

Fourth Amendment Textualism, Jeffrey Bellin

Faculty Publications

The Fourth Amendment’s prohibition of “unreasonable searches” is one of the most storied constitutional commands Yet after decades of Supreme Court jurisprudence, a coherent definition of the term “search” remains surprisingly elusive Even the justices know they have a problem Recent opinions only halfheartedly apply the controlling “reasonable expectation of privacy” test and its wildly unpopular cousin, “third-party doctrine,” with a few justices in open revolt.

These fissures hint at the Court’s openness to a new approach Unfortunately, no viable alternatives appear on the horizon The justices themselves offer little in the way of a replacement And scholars’ proposals exhibit …

Bring Your Own Device (Byod): Engaging High School Students In A Photovoice Project On School Health Promotion Using Their Own Smart Devices In Nakuru North Of Nakuru County, Kenya, Francis Wacieni Mureithi

Master of Education

The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiative has in the recent years gained popularity globally where smart devices have become the bridge to close the digital divide in ICT integration in schools, enhanced individualized learning and expanded collaborations. Despite its proven efficacy in transforming learning and teaching, efforts to shift to BYOD is still very slow in developing countries. This is due to negative perceptions of stakeholders, among several other factors; teachers and parents do not trust that students can remain focused on education and be self-disciplined when using their smart devices in public schools in Kenya. The purpose of …

Publications and Research

A group of academic librarians working in community and four-year colleges, graduate programs and other settings present strategies and approaches for serving diverse multilingual populations. Multilingual students improve their awareness and understanding of United States academic libraries and higher education when librarians are cognizant of their needs. Encounters can occur at the research desk, in classroom instruction, and during research consultations. Also included are tips on how academic librarians can assist multilingual and international students, including how to improve communication. Based on an ACRL 2019 panel discussion of the same title.

The Use Of Multimodality In The Teaching And Learning Of Imaginative Composition In A Form Two Secondary School Classroom –An Action Research, Philemon Righa Mwanguwe Nov 2019

The Use Of Multimodality In The Teaching And Learning Of Imaginative Composition In A Form Two Secondary School Classroom –An Action Research, Philemon Righa Mwanguwe

Master of Education

Various technological, cultural and social changes continue to shape how communication and meaning is delivered in classrooms. Due to these changes, language is no longer the preferred mode of communication, representation and meaning making. Hence, there is an increasing demand for educational content to be delivered using different modes. Further, the new ways of learning have compelled education practitioners to re-think their pedagogical choices and practices in order to cater for the learning needs of all the learners in class. Due to this, multimodality has attracted immense scholarship in the educational circles. Through this scholarship, many scholars have indicated how …

Peer Tutoring In Middle School: How It Changes Student Achievement And Attitudes, Lois A. Wright Nov 2019

Peer Tutoring In Middle School: How It Changes Student Achievement And Attitudes, Lois A. Wright

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

Research literature shows that mathematics is a gatekeeper to success. Providing alternative opportunities for students to strengthen mathematical reasoning over algorithmic computations while problem-solving in a collaborative environment helps to prepare students to compete locally and globally. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate how an afterschool Peer Tutoring Club (PTC) affected academic performances and attitudes of Grade 6, at-risk or “at-promise,” (Samuels, 2020), middle school mathematics students. The gap found in literature revealed a need for additional research involving rigorous multistep problem-solving within peer tutoring programs. This study collected data from 46, 1-hour, afterschool peer tutoring …

This qualitative phenomenological study examined emergent barriers revealed by analyzing data from job advertisements, structured survey results, and interviews with past and present women presidents and chancellors of public and private not-for-profit higher education institutions about their selection journey for these jobs. The purpose of this research was to engage women who were past and present presidents or chancellors of public or private nonprofit colleges and universities to explore their experiences with gender-bias during the president/chancellor recruitment, selection, and transition enactment. The first question was to study how gender-bias appears during the recruitment of women candidates for a higher education …

Using Uncertainty To Interpret Supervised Machine Learning Predictions, Michael C. Darling Nov 2019

Using Uncertainty To Interpret Supervised Machine Learning Predictions, Michael C. Darling

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Traditionally, machine learning models are assessed using methods that estimate an average performance against samples drawn from a particular distribution. Examples include the use of cross-validation or hold0out to estimate classification error, F-score, precision, and recall.

While these measures provide valuable information, they do not tell us a model's certainty relative to particular regions of the input space. Typically there are regions where the model can differentiate the classes with certainty, and regions where the model is much less certain about its predictions.

In this dissertation we explore numerous approaches for quantifying uncertainty in the individual predictions made by supervised …

It's About Our Values: How Founder's Stories Influence Brand Authenticity, Anne Hamby, David Brinberg, Kim Daniloski Nov 2019

It's About Our Values: How Founder's Stories Influence Brand Authenticity, Anne Hamby, David Brinberg, Kim Daniloski

Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Companies increasingly share the stories behind their brand’s founding to engage consumers. The current studies explore how the motives that underlie business formation in founder’s stories influence consumer brand perceptions. Specifically, stories that highlight self-transcendence (versus self-enhancement) founder values enhance the perceived authenticity of the focal brand. We examine narrative fidelity (Fisher, 1984) as a mechanism of narrative persuasion through which the audience judges whether the motives underlying character actions represent “good reasons” for action. Across three studies, we show that the values underlying a founder’s motivation to start a business influence the perceived authenticity of the associated brand, and …
