Using "Chunks" Of Academic Language, Thomas Henry, Jim Pettersson Jan 2019

Using "Chunks" Of Academic Language, Thomas Henry, Jim Pettersson

The Utah English Journal

Graff and Birkenstein (2018) provide great insights into producing quality academic prose. Likewise, they demystify the textual practices of academic writers by asking students to use (or borrow) patterns of academic language. When examining the patterns found within dozens of academic abstracts/summaries, the following patterns emerged. These "templates" (as we call them) or "chunks" (the term provided by students) may help to guide students to create more academic-style prose; likewise, these sorts of patterns may help students in the practice of writing more complex prose (see Figure 1: The Language of Abstracts).

Beyond Posters And Powerpoints: A Case For Authentic Multimodal Writing In The 21st-Century Ela Classroom, Amber Jensen Jan 2019

Beyond Posters And Powerpoints: A Case For Authentic Multimodal Writing In The 21st-Century Ela Classroom, Amber Jensen

The Utah English Journal

When I graduated from high school in 2001, my classmates and I were delighted to be the first graduates of a new century. Ushering in the twenty-first century evoked glittering promises of new and faster technologies, networked global communication, and a wide array of professional possibilities. When I entered my first classroom as a high school English teacher in 2004, however, I noticed that not much about the classroom or the curriculum had changed: I taught many of the same classic novels I had read in high school, I assigned the same kinds of writing tasks I had written as …

A Precious Resource With Some Gaps, Jeffrey Dean Lindsay Jan 2019

A Precious Resource With Some Gaps, Jeffrey Dean Lindsay

The Architecture Of Drama: How Lawyers Can Use Screenwriting Techniques To Tell More Compelling Stories, Teresa M. Bruce Jan 2019

The Architecture Of Drama: How Lawyers Can Use Screenwriting Techniques To Tell More Compelling Stories, Teresa M. Bruce

Publications

Hollywood writers have a secret. They know how to tell a compelling story—so compelling that the top-grossing motion pictures rake in millions, and sometimes billions, of dollars. How do they do it? They use a simple formula involving three acts that propel the story forward, three "plot points" that focus on the protagonist, and two "pinch points" that focus on the adversary. The attached Article argues that lawyers should build their stories in the same way Hollywood writers do. It deconstructs the storytelling formula used in movies and translates it into an IRAC-like acronym, SCOR. Attorneys who use SCOR will …

Artificial Intelligence And Law: An Overview, Harry Surden Jan 2019

Artificial Intelligence And Law: An Overview, Harry Surden

Publications

Much has been written recently about artificial intelligence (AI) and law. But what is AI, and what is its relation to the practice and administration of law? This article addresses those questions by providing a high-level overview of AI and its use within law. The discussion aims to be nuanced but also understandable to those without a technical background. To that end, I first discuss AI generally. I then turn to AI and how it is being used by lawyers in the practice of law, people and companies who are governed by the law, and government officials who administer the …

Piloting A Dynamic Assessment Model: Russian Nominal Morphology As A Building Block For L2 Listening Development, Rimma Ableeva, Olga Thomason Jan 2019

Piloting A Dynamic Assessment Model: Russian Nominal Morphology As A Building Block For L2 Listening Development, Rimma Ableeva, Olga Thomason

Russian Language Journal

Second language (L2) Russian research identifies listening comprehension as the least developed language ability among university students and points to the importance of listening instruction in Russian programs (e.g., Rifkin 2005; Comer 2012a; Isurin 2013). For example, Rifkin (2005, 11) states that students typically exhibit an “intermediate-low level of L2 listening proficiency” after completion of a 4-year Russian program. According to Isurin (2013, 39), the survey conducted among L2 Russian learners and instructors acknowledged “listening comprehension as the most problematic area in students’ language proficiency in general.” Comer (2012a) attributes poor listening ability to insufficient teaching materials and activities as …

Verbs In Egyptian Arabic: A Case For Register Variation, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Michael G. White

Faculty Publications

The limited availability of Egyptian Arabic (EA) corpus resources, especially speech corpora, has left open opportunity for research into such dialect phenomena as register. In this paper we introduce a new two-millionword EA corpus, CALM. We perform a register analysis on EA between two subcorpora of CALM (i.e. Movies and Blogs), showing several features that vary between the two. A discussion follows about how annotation was carried out automatically, how it was handcorrected, and what the prospects are for carrying out similar studies using CALM.

  • Read 300 sentences from COCA.
  • ~30 minutes each, 12.5 hours total
  • Recorded in 2017 • 24,325 tokens

Is it inappropriate to say the SVS is “receding”?

  • What are they reverting back to? 1850s English?

Better interpretation: Young Georgians are adopting the Elsewhere Shift

  • The low back merger is (nearly) complete.
  • The front lax vowels have retracted.

How has Georgia English changed since the 1890s? All vowels have changed.

What is the trajectory of that change? In the direction of the Elsewhere Shift.

Social Factors In Southern Us Speech: Acoustic Analysis Of A Large-Scale Legacy Corpus, Joseph A. Stanley, Margaret E. L. Renwick Jan 2019

Social Factors In Southern Us Speech: Acoustic Analysis Of A Large-Scale Legacy Corpus, Joseph A. Stanley, Margaret E. L. Renwick

Faculty Publications

Conclusions

Vowels’ acoustics vary by race, sex and age:

  • European American speakers have greater /eɪ ɛ/ swapping than African Americans, supporting Thomas’ (2007) characterization of the African American Vowel Shift
  • Women have a more diphthongal realization of front /ɛ æ/ than men

Active divergence of Southern speech from other varieties:

  • In this historical dataset, younger speakers lead Southern shifting: they have more “swapping” of /i ɪ/and /eɪ ɛ/, more back-vowel fronting, and more dynamic /æ/ and /ɔ/ vowels
  • Older speakers are more conservative both in vowels’ relative positioning, and their dynamics

/eɪ ɛ/ are the nexus of shifting in DASS …

Gender, Performativity, And Agency Invirginia Woolf:A Butlerian Reading Oforlando, Bakhtiar Sadjadi, Serveh Hozhabri

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The present paper attempts to closely study Virginia Woolf’s Orlando in terms of Judith Butler’s concepts of gender, performativity, and agency. Woolf examines women, their struggles and positions in literary History/ Archaeology, and their needs for independence. Themes in her works consist of gender relations, class hierarchy, and the consequences of war. In most of her novels, she moves away from the use of plot and character and, instead, emphasizes the psychological aspects of her characters. In Orlando, the protagonist lives through centuries and Woolf allows her character to transform into a female halfway during the novel. The novel is directly …

Adaptive Acts: Queer Voices And Radical Adaptation In Multi-Ethnic American Literary And Visual Culture, Michael M. Means Jan 2019

Adaptive Acts: Queer Voices And Radical Adaptation In Multi-Ethnic American Literary And Visual Culture, Michael M. Means

Theses and Dissertations

Adaptation Studies suffers from a deficiency in the study of black, brown, yellow, and red adaptive texts, adaptive actors, and their practices. Adaptive Acts intervenes in this Eurocentric discourse as a study of adaptation with a (queer) POC perspective. My dissertation reveals that artists of color (re)create texts via dynamic modes of adaptation such as hyper-literary allusion, the use of meta-narratives as framing devices, and on-site collaborative re-writes that speak to/from specific cultural discourses that Eurocentric models alone cannot account for. I examine multi-ethnic American adaptations to delineate the role of adaptation in the continuance of stories that contest dominant …

Prosecuting In The Shadow Of The Jury, Anna Offit Jan 2019

Prosecuting In The Shadow Of The Jury, Anna Offit

Faculty Publications

This Article offers an unprecedented empirical window into prosecutorial discretion, drawing on research between 2013 and 2017. The central finding is that jurors play a vital role in federal prosecutors' decision-making, professional identities, and formulations of justice. This is because even the remote possibility of lay scrutiny creates an opening for prosecutors to make commonsense assessments of (1) the evidence in their cases, (2) the character of witnesses, defendants, and victims, and (3) their own moral and professional character as public servants. By facilitating explicit consideration of the fairness of their cases from a public vantage point, I argue that …

A Comparative Study Of Author Gender Identification, Tuğba Yildiz Jan 2019

A Comparative Study Of Author Gender Identification, Tuğba Yildiz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In recent years, author gender identification has gained considerable attention in the fields of information retrieval and computational linguistics. In this paper, we employ and evaluate different learning approaches based on machine learning (ML) and neural network language models to address the problem of author gender identification. First, several ML classifiers are applied to the features obtained by bag-of-words. Secondly, datasets are represented by a low-dimensional real-valued vector using Word2vec, GloVe, and Doc2vec, which are on par with ML classifiers in terms of accuracy. Lastly, neural networks architectures, the convolution neural network and recurrent neural network, are trained and their …

Automatic Generation Control Analysis Of Power System With Nonlinearities Andelectric Vehicle Aggregators With Time-Varying Delay Implementing A Novel Control Strategy, Nimai Charan Patel, Binod Kumar Sahu, Manoj Kumar Debnath

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Automatic generation control (AGC) also known as load frequency control plays a vital role in interconnected power system for frequency regulation. Electric vehicles (EVs) with battery as the storage device can participate in frequency regulation service. In practice, a large number of EVs are aggregated as a single unit called EV aggregator for participation in frequency regulation service in AGC system. Participation of EV aggregators in AGC system for frequency regulation will be encouraged in near future because EVs have less environmental pollution than the conventional vehicles. However, participation of EV aggregators in AGC system may introduce time delay which …

Extracting Accent Information From Urdu Speech For Forensic Speaker Recognition, Falak Tahir, Sajid Saleem, Ayaz Ahmad

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a new method for extraction of accent information from Urdu speech signals. Accent is used in speaker recognition system especially in forensic cases and plays a vital role in discriminating people of different groups, communities and origins due to their different speaking styles. The proposed method is based on Gaussian mixture model-universal background model (GMM-UBM), mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC), and a data augmentation (DA) process. The DA process appends features to base MFCC features and improves the accent extraction and forensic speaker recognition performances of GMM-UBM. Experiments are performed on an Urdu forensic speaker corpus. The experimental …

Sentence Similarity Using Weighted Path And Similarity Matrices, Reza Javadzadeh, Morteza Zahedi, Marziea Rahimi Jan 2019

Sentence Similarity Using Weighted Path And Similarity Matrices, Reza Javadzadeh, Morteza Zahedi, Marziea Rahimi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Sentence similarity is the task of assessing how similar the two snippets of text are. Similarity techniques are used extensively in clustering, summarization, classification, plagiarism detection etc. Due to a small set of vocabularies, sentence similarity is considered to be a difficult problem in natural language processing. There are two issues in solving this problem: (1) Which similarity techniques to be used for word pair similarity and (2) How to generalize that to sentence pairs. We have used the weighted path, a WordNet-based similarity assessment, and the paraphrase database to obtain word pair similarity values. Thereafter, we extracted maximum values …

Hybrid texts ask readers …

Talented High School Students' Perceptions On How Their Parents Influence Their Achievement, Michael Fitzgerald Jan 2019

Talented High School Students' Perceptions On How Their Parents Influence Their Achievement, Michael Fitzgerald

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Talented students are an underserved population in American schools today. Despite being identified as talented in a certain domain, many of these students are not developing their potential into outcomes of advanced achievement and skill. Research shows that parents play a critical role in developing their children’s talent. To change the cycle of underachievement, we need to start working with the talented students to get their perspective on what helps them. This is a qualitative case study of four talented high school students to discover their perspective on how their parents influence their achievement and motivation to learn. Multiple interviews …

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This research study sought to understand how newcomer teachers address the social-emotional needs of their students in conjunction with English language and academic needs by using a qualitative approach. Literature thus far about newcomer education has focused on the language and academic needs of newcomer students, omitting the need to also address social-emotional learning. The study included interviews with four newcomer teachers from across the United States and found that for every teacher, social-emotional learning was the foundation for how they approached their students and made decisions about curriculum in their classroom. Despite the variation of program structure and level …
