A Rhetorical Analysis Of President Bill Clinton's First Term Presidential Rhetoric, Ireland Hill Jan 2019

A Rhetorical Analysis Of President Bill Clinton's First Term Presidential Rhetoric, Ireland Hill

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Bill Clinton was the United States of America’s (U.S.) 42nd President, and his rhetoric set the tone of U.S. political climate for years following his presidency. Due to the power that a president possesses, a president’s presence and statements are frequently analyzed. It is clear, however, that there is a lack of research completed on presidential rhetoric. Upon this realization, I reflected on my previous areas of research; one of those areas was the first term presidential rhetoric of Clinton. As a result, I decided that a rhetorical analysis of some of the major rhetoric that contributed to Clinton’s first …

Sharing Stories And Learning To Lead: A Relational Mentoring Process Through Self-Portraiture, Kathleen M. Cowin, Sarah N. Newcomer Jan 2019

Sharing Stories And Learning To Lead: A Relational Mentoring Process Through Self-Portraiture, Kathleen M. Cowin, Sarah N. Newcomer

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The creation of a relational, co-mentoring community for aspiring school leaders during their certification program may allow these future leaders to participate in a peer mentoring process wherein they engage one another in interdependence, experience reciprocal growth-fostering interactions, and tackle issues related to systemic power. The relational mentoring process creates a network of colleagues who understand the nature of the work of a principal candidate and who provide support and promote trust, knowing what they reveal will be held in confidence. This study focuses on two questions: How does the process of self-portraiture help principal candidates reflect on the kind …

An Investigation Of Three Approaches To Vocabulary Learning In High School Spanish Classes, Kathleen A. M. Jester, Rebecca M. Giles, Susan N. Ferguson Jan 2019

An Investigation Of Three Approaches To Vocabulary Learning In High School Spanish Classes, Kathleen A. M. Jester, Rebecca M. Giles, Susan N. Ferguson

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Three vocabulary learning approaches -- rote memorization; Cover, Copy, Compare (CCC); and Cover, Copy, Compare Adapted with picture (CCCA) – were examined for effectiveness in promoting long-term memory retention for productive vocabulary in foreign language learning. Pretest, posttest, and delayed posttest data were collected using Conjuguemos, an on-line Spanish program. Results indicated a significant increase in mean scores with each assessment for all treatments; however, there was no significant difference in recall among the three learning approaches. Students were also surveyed about their preferences in approaches. Although survey responses indicated a preference for CCC, most students reported abandoning use of …

Menippean Satire In The Digital Era: Gary Shteyngart’S Super Sad True Love Story, Peter Schmidt Jan 2019

Menippean Satire In The Digital Era: Gary Shteyngart’S Super Sad True Love Story, Peter Schmidt

English Literature Faculty Works

Howard Weinbrot argues that Menippean satire tends to be produced in eras of "broken or fragile national, cultural, religious, political or generally intellectual values" (7). It protests cultural decadence and decline by incorporating contradiction into its form, using "at least two other genres, languages, cultures, or changes of voice to oppose a dangerous, false, or specious and threatening orthodoxy" (6). Although it may feature memorable characters, the Menippean mode primarily targets diseased and dangerous ideas or habits. It is encyclopedic in range and ambition, absorbing and parodying different discourses and genres while constructing a narrative via debates, fantasies, annotations (either …

Burning The Breadboard: A New Approach To The Optimist’S Daughter, Peter Schmidt Jan 2019

Burning The Breadboard: A New Approach To The Optimist’S Daughter, Peter Schmidt

English Literature Faculty Works

This paper takes several angles of approach towards more deeply understanding central tensions in The Optimist’s Daughter. Goaded by Fay, the novel’s heroine struggles between her need to control and defend a past she feels is under attack and her intimation that her family’s life and values can’t truly be honored by such methods. The narrator also tells us that Laurel seeks to be “pardoned and freed” (OD 179)—but why, and from what? Welty’s text explicitly connects the possibility of pardon with Laurel forgiving her parents. How might we understand this tie between forgiving others and being pardoned oneself? Key …

Sticky: Taboo Topics In Deaf Communities, J. N. Fisher, G. Mirus, Donna Jo Napoli Jan 2019

Sticky: Taboo Topics In Deaf Communities, J. N. Fisher, G. Mirus, Donna Jo Napoli

Linguistics Faculty Works

This chapter offers an overview of taboo topics within deaf communities to bring forward issues not obvious to those outside deaf communities. We look at taboo behaviors of hearing people as they interact with deaf communities, considering linguistic and cultural appropriation, exploitation, and hearing privilege. We also look at taboo topics regarding social hierarchies within deaf communities, those based on gender and race, as well as those based on cognitive abilities, particularly language. These topics present a nuanced and diverse representation of deaf people, which is intended to sensitize those aiming to work with deaf communities or, in fact, with …

Morphological Theory And Sign Languages, Donna Jo Napoli Jan 2019

Morphological Theory And Sign Languages, Donna Jo Napoli

Linguistics Faculty Works

Sign language morphology adds new considerations to well-studied areas, including category identification, inflection vs. derivation, the notions of ideophones, subject, and root, and properties used in lexical classifications. It makes necessary the new notion of reactive effort in understanding how biomechanical factors help shape the lexicon. The prevalence of simultaneity (verticality) over linearity (horizontal temporality) shows that linguistic analysis must include the study of physical properties (visual vs. auditory) if we are to understand language typology. Phonological parameters can have meaning associated with them, either arbitrarily or because they are iconic. This allows for lexical networks that require the mechanism …

Zapotec Language Activism And Talking Dictionaries, K. David Harrison, B. D. Lillehaugen, Jeremy Fahringer , '06, F. H. Lopez Jan 2019

Zapotec Language Activism And Talking Dictionaries, K. David Harrison, B. D. Lillehaugen, Jeremy Fahringer , '06, F. H. Lopez

Linguistics Faculty Works

Online dictionaries have become a key tool for some indigenous communities to promote and preserve their languages, often in collaboration with linguists. They can provide a pathway for crossing the digital divide and for establishing a first-ever presence on the internet. Many questions around digital lexicography have been explored, although primarily in relation to large and well-resourced languages. Lexical projects on small and under-resourced languages can provide an opportunity to examine these questions from a different perspective and to raise new questions (Mosel, 2011). In this paper, linguists, technical experts, and Zapotec language activists, who have worked together in Mexico …

Embodied Difference: Divergent Bodies In Public Discourse, Jamie A. Thomas, C. Jackson Jan 2019

Embodied Difference: Divergent Bodies In Public Discourse, Jamie A. Thomas, C. Jackson

Linguistics Faculty Works

Focusing on the body as a visual and discursive platform across public space, we study marginalization as a sociocultural practice and hegemonic schema. Whereas mass incarceration and law enforcement readily feature in discussions of institutionalized racism, we differently highlight understudied sites of normalization and exclusion. Our combined effort centers upon physical contexts (skeletons, pageant stages, gentrifying neighborhoods), discursive spaces (medical textbooks, legal battles, dance pedagogy, vampire narratives) and philosophical arenas (morality, genocide, physician-assisted suicide, cryonic preservation, transfeminism) to deconstruct seemingly intrinsic connections between body and behavior, Whiteness and normativity.

A Phonetic Study Of Length And Duration In Kyrgyz Vowels, Nathaniel Ziv Stern , '20, Jonathan North Washington Jan 2019

A Phonetic Study Of Length And Duration In Kyrgyz Vowels, Nathaniel Ziv Stern , '20, Jonathan North Washington

Linguistics Faculty Works

This paper examines the phonetic correlates of the (phonological) vowel length contrast in Kyrgyz to address a range of questions about the nature of this contrast, and also explores factors that affect (phonetic) duration in short vowels. Measurement and analysis of the vowels confirms that there is indeed a significant duration distinction between the Kyrgyz vowel categories referred to as short and long vowels. Preliminary midpoint formant measurements show that there may be some accompanying spectral component to the length contrast for certain vowels, but findings are not conclusive. A comparison of F0 dynamics and spectral dynamics through long and …

Governing The Internet Of Everything, Scott J. Shackelford Jan 2019

Governing The Internet Of Everything, Scott J. Shackelford

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

Since the term was first coined in the late 1990s, the "Internet of Things" has promised a smart, interconnected world enabling your toaster to text you when your breakfast is ready, and your sweatshirt to give you status updates during your workout. This rise of "smart products" such as Internet-enabled appliances has the potential to revolutionize both business and society. But the smart wave will not stop with stuff with related trends such as the Internet of Bodies now coming into vogue. It seems that, if anything, humanity is headed toward an Internet of Everything. Yet it is an open …

Application Of Boolean Logic To Natural Language Complexity In Political Discourse, Austin Taing Jan 2019

Application Of Boolean Logic To Natural Language Complexity In Political Discourse, Austin Taing

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Press releases serve as a major influence on public opinion of a politician, since they are a primary means of communicating with the public and directing discussion. Thus, the public’s ability to digest them is an important factor for politicians to consider. This study employs several well-studied measures of linguistic complexity and proposes a new one to examine whether politicians change their language to become more or less difficult to parse in different situations. This study uses 27,500 press releases from the US Senate between 2004–2008 and examines election cycles and natural disasters, namely hurricanes, as situations where politicians’ language …

Can The Lifeworld Save Us From Neoliberal Governmentality? Social Work, Critical Theory, And Habermas, Stephanie A. Bryson Jan 2019

Can The Lifeworld Save Us From Neoliberal Governmentality? Social Work, Critical Theory, And Habermas, Stephanie A. Bryson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Two years have passed since the 2016 election of Donald J. Trump, and U.S. social work is revisiting its radical stirrings and grappling with its conservative moorings. In this paper, I will argue that as U.S. social work appraises the adequacy of its intellectual leaders, the cultural relevance of its practice models, and its stance toward the Enlightenment ideals of reason, truth, and justice, it might usefully re-examine its relationship to the critical theory legacy of the Frankfurt School, especially the thinking of Jürgen Habermas. My goal is in this essay is to suggest ways in which Habermasian thinking could …

The Culture-Structure Framework: Beyond The Cultural Competence Paradigm, Mimi E. Kim Jan 2019

The Culture-Structure Framework: Beyond The Cultural Competence Paradigm, Mimi E. Kim

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article provides a framework for understanding the distinctions between culture and structure in its application to the human services. Using intimate partner violence (IPV) as a case study, this article builds upon the contributions of intersectionality, which was first introduced as a critique of white-dominated IPV interventions. It also follows the development of the concept of cultural competence to demonstrate the ways in which it both opened opportunities to discuss cultural differences but also suppressed the analysis of racialized hierarchies of power, which are often muted by the elevation of culture over race. Finally, this article proposes a general …

Youth Who Serve: Mandatory School Service Experience And Consequent Civic Responsibility, Cho See Chong Jan 2019

Youth Who Serve: Mandatory School Service Experience And Consequent Civic Responsibility, Cho See Chong

Theses

Two phenomena are of interest in this study. One is youth service, in particular, the acts of volunteering by young adults. The second concerns the learning of service, with specific reference to mandatory school service. The aim of the study is to explore to what extent and in what ways young people believe that their sense of civic responsibility and propensity to serve was influenced by their experience of service at school. To achieve this aim, a qualitative study was conducted on a group of post-school youth in Singapore who had participated in mandatory community service while at school, and …

Compelled Subsidies And Original Meaning, Jud Campbell Jan 2019

Compelled Subsidies And Original Meaning, Jud Campbell

Law Faculty Publications

The rule against compelled subsidization of speech is at the forefront of modem First Amendment disputes. Challenges to mandatory union dues, laws preventing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and the federal "contraceptive mandate" have all featured variants of the anti-subsidization principle, reasoning that the government cannot compel people to support the objectionable activities of others. But the literature currently fails to evaluate modem compelled-subsidy doctrine in terms of the original meaning of the First Amendment. This Essay takes up that task.

Approaching any question of original meaning requires a willingness to encounter a constitutional world that looks very …

Culture, Gender, And The Social Construction Of Borderline Personality Disorder, Allegra L. Comas Jan 2019

Culture, Gender, And The Social Construction Of Borderline Personality Disorder, Allegra L. Comas

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study investigates the ways in which culture, gender, and language inform the clinical subjectivity of licensed clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, and psychologists working with women that present with behaviors associated with BPD as ascribed in the DSM III-V. Psychiatrists who produced BPD argue there is a biological basis to the diagnosis, which has never been proven. The majority of literature on BPD primarily focuses on the patients’ behaviors that may meet the legally codified criteria. However, little scholarship is published about the counter-transference and cultural bias of psychotherapists while diagnosing, treatment planning, and using appropriate …

The Emergence Of A Lay Esprit De Corps: Inspirations, Tensions, Horizons, Christopher Pramuk Jan 2019

The Emergence Of A Lay Esprit De Corps: Inspirations, Tensions, Horizons, Christopher Pramuk

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Likening the Ignatian tradition as embodied at Jesuit universities to a family photo album with many pages yet to be added, the author locates the “heart” of the Ignatian sensibility in the movements of freedom and spirit (inspiration) in the life of the community. There are no fixed entry points or criteria of inclusion and exclusion for Ignatian lay educators save a desire to share in the questions proper to all the university disciplines that pull us toward a horizon beyond ourselves. Nevertheless a number of creative tensions endemic to Jesuit apostolic life from the beginning and also new challenges …

Brechas En La Enseñanza De La Cultura Del Español Como Segunda Lengua, Elizabeth Mary Maldonado Jan 2019

Brechas En La Enseñanza De La Cultura Del Español Como Segunda Lengua, Elizabeth Mary Maldonado

Master's Theses

A Crt Analysis Of Teach Like A Champion 2.0, Kayla Stewart Valenti Jan 2019

A Crt Analysis Of Teach Like A Champion 2.0, Kayla Stewart Valenti

Master's Theses

African American and Latinx students in the United States continue to academically perform at lower levels than their White peers as indicated by standardized testing results. While many educational efforts have attempted to close the achievement gap that exists between White students and students of Color, disparities in academic outcomes persist. The prominent discourse regarding the achievement gap emphasizes cultural deficiencies within the individual student rather than acknowledge structural and institutional factors that uphold systemic racism and White supremacy. As a result, many new instructional approaches and teaching techniques used in schools and teacher preparation programs focus on correcting the …

Thematic Progression In Online Algerian Newspaper Articles:Insights To Producing Coherenttexts, Touria Drid

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper presents an analysis of the preferred thematic progression patterns used in a sample of online English versions of Algerian news articles written by Algerian journalists and appearing originally in Arabic. The purpose is to detect the recurrent patterns in this media genre. Departing from the more clause-centered models for the analysis of thematic development, the present study uses a categorization of thematic progression patterns derived from McCabe’s (1999) and Daneš’s (1974) models as a framework for the analysis. The corpus of the study comprises 30 online English articles that appeared in two Algerian newspapers Echoroukand Ennahar. The analysisproceeded …

Our Ambivalent Stereotypes Of Sheep, Veronica Sevillano Jan 2019

Our Ambivalent Stereotypes Of Sheep, Veronica Sevillano

Animal Sentience

Marino & Merskin’s target article contrasts our ambivalent social ideas about sheep with the empirical evidence of their complex capacities, particularly cognitive ones. To extend our understanding of human-sheep relations, I discuss human social perception of animals and structural variables that predict our stereotypes.
