Finding A Foreign Home In Katherine Mansfield’S “The Daughters Of The Late Colonel”, Sam Jacob Jan 2019

Finding A Foreign Home In Katherine Mansfield’S “The Daughters Of The Late Colonel”, Sam Jacob

Modernist Short Story Project

The latter end of Katherine Mansfield’s life (1915-1923), a time considered by many to be the most fruitful years of her career, also marked a period of self-examination and introspection for the author. Much of this self-reflection focused on Mansfield’s long-standing frustration with her New Zealand heritage—which she had abandoned in favor of a bohemian life of writing and creativity—with an emerging desire for a more traditional sense of home and domestic life. Two letters written by Mansfield during this time reflect the dissonance caused by these desires. The first letter, written in 1915 to her husband, John Middleton Murray, …

Cultural Competency Training In Primary Care: A Pilot Project For Improving Culturally Competent Care, Diane F. Riff Jan 2019

Cultural Competency Training In Primary Care: A Pilot Project For Improving Culturally Competent Care, Diane F. Riff

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

As America grows increasingly diverse, there is a recognized need for increased cultural competence in Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and other healthcare workers. Research has shown that when health care providers are not attentive to providing culturally competent care, there is a subsequent negative impact on the quality, safety and cost of patient care. Cultural

competency is a recognized and popular approach to improving the provision of health

care to racial/ethnic minority groups in the community with the aim of reducing health disparities in racial/ethnic minorities. The project sought to improve NPs’ and other health care workers’ abilities to provide culturally …

Cannabis And Psychosis Through The Lens Of Dsm-5, Nathan T. Pearson, James H. Berry Jan 2019

Cannabis And Psychosis Through The Lens Of Dsm-5, Nathan T. Pearson, James H. Berry

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Evidence for an association between cannabis and psychosis has been documented in literature in many forms including experimental studies, epidemiological data, and case series. The association has implications for psychotic outcomes ranging from mild to severe and occurring over minutes to years. Due to the huge variety of exposures and outcome measures reported, creating a coherent account of all the available information is difficult. A useful way to conceptualize these wide-ranging results is to consider the association between cannabis and psychosis as it occurs within the context of widely used DSM-5 diagnoses. In the present review we examine cannabis/psychosis associations …

The “Motor Of The Day”: Parent And School-Age Children’S Cognitions, Barriers, And Supports For Breakfast, Kaitlyn M. Eck, Colleen L. Delaney, Rashel L. Clark, Miriam P. Leary, Karla Pagan Shelnutt, Melissa D. Olfert, Carol Byrd-Bredbenner Jan 2019

The “Motor Of The Day”: Parent And School-Age Children’S Cognitions, Barriers, And Supports For Breakfast, Kaitlyn M. Eck, Colleen L. Delaney, Rashel L. Clark, Miriam P. Leary, Karla Pagan Shelnutt, Melissa D. Olfert, Carol Byrd-Bredbenner

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Despite the many benefits of regular breakfast consumption few parents and children consume this meal every day and research examining the determinants of breakfast consumption is limited. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine breakfast-related cognitions (i.e., beliefs, attitudes, facilitators, barriers) of parents and school-age children (ages 6–11 years) using the constructs of Social Cognitive Theory as a guide. Parents (n = 37) and children (n = 41) participated in focus group discussions held in community settings in 3 states (FL, NJ, WV). Data were qualitatively content analyzed to detect trends. Parents felt breakfast was important for numerous …

The Caged Bildungsroman: Feminist Avian Narratives In Charlotte Brontë’S Jane Eyre And Thomas Hardy’S Tess Of The D’Urbervilles, Samantha English Jan 2019

The Caged Bildungsroman: Feminist Avian Narratives In Charlotte Brontë’S Jane Eyre And Thomas Hardy’S Tess Of The D’Urbervilles, Samantha English

Honors Thesis Collection

Perhaps the most famous quotation from Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre (1847) is “I am no bird, and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will.” But Jane's powerful and memorable feminist declaration to Rochester is often at odds with the many avian metaphors Brontë invents for the novel that compare women to birds. I've long been interested in how certain writers transform traditionally feminized or sexualized natural images like birds to craft a feminist poetics of their own. My senior thesis examines avian imagery in Brontë's Jane Eyre and Thomas Hardy's Tess of the …

Myth, Magic, And Murderous Mothers: An Exploration Of Myth And Medea, Danielle Leibu Jan 2019

Myth, Magic, And Murderous Mothers: An Exploration Of Myth And Medea, Danielle Leibu

Honors Thesis Collection

I survey through various sources to get a grasp on the dimensions and aspects of myth. I then emphasize its intrinsic flexibility which allows it to pervade multiple levels of meaning. I further examine this definition by going through the various iterations of myths of Medea. In essence, I explore the scope of the flexibility inherent in nearly all aspects of Medea’s character. This flexibility suggests that Medea, specifically Euripides’ Medea, reflects and embodies the polyvalence of myth. While I looked through many iterations of the myth of Medea, I maintain a distinct focus on Euripides’ Medea, since it has …

The Challenges Of Algorithmically Assigning Fact-Checks: A Sociotechnical Examination Of Google's Reviewed Claims, Emma Lurie Jan 2019

The Challenges Of Algorithmically Assigning Fact-Checks: A Sociotechnical Examination Of Google's Reviewed Claims, Emma Lurie

Honors Thesis Collection

In the era of misinformation and machine learning, the fact-checking community is eager to develop semi-automated fact-checking techniques that can detect misinformation and present fact-checks alongside problematic content. This thesis explores the technical elements and social context of one "claim matching" system, Google's Reviewed Claims. The Reviewed Claims feature was one of the few user-facing interfaces in the complex socio-technical system between fact-checking organizations, news publishers, Google, and online information seekers. This thesis addresses the following research questions:

RQ1: How accurate was Google's Reviewed Claims feature?

RQ2: Is it possible to create a consensus definition for "relevant fact-checks" …

Birthright Or Meritocracy?: Deep Stories And Undocumented Student Access To Higher Education, Marina Lopez Jan 2019

Birthright Or Meritocracy?: Deep Stories And Undocumented Student Access To Higher Education, Marina Lopez

Honors Thesis Collection

In the United States, allowing undocumented students to qualify for in-state tuition has been an oddly contentious topic in legal, political, and social realms. It is at once a debate about immigration law, federalism, sentiment towards immigrants, and the direction for the nation. This thesis explores the various laws and policies that each state across the country holds for allowing undocumented students to receive in-state tuition. In addition to this nationwide survey of states, I focus on four state case studies to explore key factors that led states to grant or deny in-state tuition to undocumented people. An important factor …

Reimagining Local Education Systems In Sri Lanka Through Design Anthropology, Kavindya Thennakoon Jan 2019

Reimagining Local Education Systems In Sri Lanka Through Design Anthropology, Kavindya Thennakoon

Honors Thesis Collection

My research project is focused on exploring how design anthropology could be used as a tool to reimagine local education systems in Sri Lanka. The project culminated from fieldwork in Sri Lanka that focused on testing a five-hour long design session with a diverse group of researchers and educators. This was followed by a visual ethnography component that followed three local educators from the village of Wanathawilluwa. Through these ethnographic findings and field observations, I argue that design anthropology presents a unique toolbox for collaborative, participatory, solutions-driven forms of community engagement that aim to radically reimagine everyday structures of power.

Benefits Of Early Childhood Education And Family Support, Daisha Best Jan 2019

Benefits Of Early Childhood Education And Family Support, Daisha Best

Integrated Studies

Abstract

There have been misconceptions about the purpose of early childhood education and early childhood centers and how the program is designed. Many people believe that the early childhood education process is easy because young children do not really learn, but simply spend their time playing at early childhood centers. As a result, many people believe they can teach their child without the assistance of an early childhood center but what caregivers don’t know is that there is more to Early Childhood Education than just playing games. Early Childhood Education helps young children give them a head start on giving …

Internet Searches For Medical Symptoms Before Seeking Information On 12-Step Addiction Treatment Programs: A Web-Search Log Analysis, G. Nitzburg, I. Weber, E. Yom-Tov Jan 2019

Internet Searches For Medical Symptoms Before Seeking Information On 12-Step Addiction Treatment Programs: A Web-Search Log Analysis, G. Nitzburg, I. Weber, E. Yom-Tov

Journal Articles

© 2019 George Nitzburg, Ingmar Weber, Elad Yom-Tov. Background: Brief intervention is a critical method for identifying patients with problematic substance use in primary care settings and for motivating them to consider treatment options. However, despite considerable evidence of delay discounting in patients with substance use disorders, most brief advice by physicians focuses on the long-term negative medical consequences, which may not be the best way to motivate patients to seek treatment information. Objective: Identification of the specific symptoms that most motivate individuals to seek treatment information may offer insights for further improving brief interventions. To this end, we used …

The Visual Word Form Area (Vwfa) Is Part Of Both Language And Attention Circuitry, Lang Chen, Demian Wassermann, Daniel A. Abrams, John Kochalka, Guillermo Gallardo-Diez, Vinod Menon Jan 2019

The Visual Word Form Area (Vwfa) Is Part Of Both Language And Attention Circuitry, Lang Chen, Demian Wassermann, Daniel A. Abrams, John Kochalka, Guillermo Gallardo-Diez, Vinod Menon

Psychology

While predominant models of visual word form area (VWFA) function argue for its specific role in decoding written language, other accounts propose a more general role of VWFA in complex visual processing. However, a comprehensive examination of structural and functional VWFA circuits and their relationship to behavior has been missing. Here, using high-resolution multimodal imaging data from a large Human Connectome Project cohort (N = 313), we demonstrate robust patterns of VWFA connectivity with both canonical language and attentional networks. Brain-behavior relationships revealed a striking pattern of double dissociation: structural connectivity of VWFA with lateral temporal language network predicted language, …

Impact Of Language Program Model On Third-Grade English Language Learners’ Proficiency In Literacy, Alecia Roberts Jan 2019

Impact Of Language Program Model On Third-Grade English Language Learners’ Proficiency In Literacy, Alecia Roberts

Education Dissertations and Projects

Demographics within U.S. public schools have seen a drastic change over the years from the ruling of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954) which integrated schools to the current increase in English Language Learners (ELLs) within the classroom. The U.S. is known to be a melting pot, and the present-day classrooms are a clear example of this phenomenon; however, with the increase in demographics of the U.S. classrooms, ELLs are falling significantly behind their peers in reading achievement. Thus, this study examined the impact of traditional, dual-language, and full immersion settings on North Carolina third-grade ELLs’ proficiency in …

This study examined the effects of intertextual study using young adult literature and classic literature on both student reading attitudes and student achievement with 10th- grade high school English students in a suburban high school in North Carolina. The convergent parallel mixed methods action research study used qualitative data in the form of an anonymous survey and anonymous open-ended journal responses as well as qualitative data from achievement results on required benchmark tests. The survey results were analyzed in terms of responses, and open-ended responses were analyzed and coded for themes. Multiple themes emerged from the survey responses and open-ended …

Culture And Language: An Action Research Study On The Impact Of Integrating Culture Into A Chinese Language Immersion Program, Haibin Li Jan 2019

Culture And Language: An Action Research Study On The Impact Of Integrating Culture Into A Chinese Language Immersion Program, Haibin Li

Education Dissertations and Projects

Though a framework for foreign language education exists, the lack of guidelines, proper implementation, and benchmarks, along with scarce research on the effects of implementing cultural aspects in immersion classrooms leaves foreign language educators in the dark. An action research study design was utilized in a second grade Chinese immersion program at a language academy, investigating the impacts of the inclusion of culture activities in the classroom. Areas included were cultural exposure, teaching methods, teaching materials, cross cultural education, and challenges. Research data collected included students’ unit test scores, journals, parent surveys, and parent interviews. Time practicing is important, yet …

Analyzing Public View Towards Vaccination Using Twitter, Mahajan Rutuja Jan 2019

Analyzing Public View Towards Vaccination Using Twitter, Mahajan Rutuja

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Educating people about vaccination tends to target vaccine acceptance and reduction of hesitancy. Social media provides a promising platform for studying public perception regarding vaccination. In this study, we harvested tweets over a year related to vaccines from February 2018 to January 2019. We present a two-stage classifier to: (1) classify the tweets as relevant or non-relevant and (2) categorize them in terms of pro-vaccination, anti-vaccination, or neutral outlook. We found that the classifier was able to distinguish clearly between anti-vaccination and pro-vaccination tweets, but also misclassified many of these as neutral. Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation, we found that two …

United States Foreign Policies On Iran And Iraq, And The Negative Impact On The Kurdish Nationalist Movement: From The Nixon Era Through The Reagan Years, Janet A. Franklin

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

United States foreign policies on Iran and Iraq, during the later Cold War period, led to devastating consequences to Iraqi Kurdish aspirations for autonomy and a separate nation-state. By employing the Shah of Iran as one pillar of America’s proxy in the Persian Gulf, and after the Iranian Revolution, to then begin collaborating with Iraq during the Iran-Iraq War, U.S. policies marginalized and negatively impacted Iraqi Kurds’ goal of independence.

Evaluating Native American Bird Use And Bird Assemblage Variability Along The Oregon Coast, Kristine M. Bovy, Madonna L. Moss, Jessica E. Watson, Frances J. White, Timothy T. Jones, Heather A. Ulrich, Julia K. Parrish

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Native American use of birds on the Oregon coast is not well known and has never been synthesized to present a regional understanding. We rectify this by analyzing data from 26 zooarchaeological assemblages, including three previously unpublished bird assemblages: Umpqua/Eden (35DO83), Whale Cove (35LNC60), and the Dunes Site (35CLT27). We employ a series of non-parametric randomization tests to directly evaluate patterns of taxonomic diversity, correlations with nearby breeding colonies, and broader procurement strategies discussed in ethnohistorical accounts. We compare the assemblages to contemporary surveys of naturally beached birds as observed by COASST (Coastal Observation Seabird Survey Team) and evaluate whether …

A Sociophonetic Analysis Of Islander Creole Rhotics, Falcon Restrepo-Ramos

World Languages & Cultures Department Publications

This study uses a combination of phonetic predictors and sociolinguistic factors to examine the variable production of rhotics in an English-based Creole in the Island of Old Providence, Colombia. Speech data were collected from five informants by means of sociolinguistic interviews and other-speech elicitation tasks, while 328 Praat-annotated tokens were extracted from a transcribed corpus of approximately 5,700 words. Rhotic production was examined according to several acoustic correlates (i.e., formant frequencies and segmental duration) and linguistic (i.e., word position and stress) and social (i.e., sex) factors. Formant frequencies in the form of F3 and F2 revealed a post-alveolar production, while …
