Father Communication Coaching For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Single-Subject Study, Michelle Flippin

Communicative Disorders Faculty Publications

Background and aims: Parent-mediated interventions have been shown to be effective for improving communication skills for children with autism spectrum disorder when implemented by mothers. Little is known about the efficacy of autism spectrum disorder communication interventions implemented by fathers. This study investigated the effects of a 12-week coaching program on a father’s use of responsive strategies. Targeted responsive strategies included follow-in comments, follow-in directives, responsive physical play, and responsive object play. Collateral measures of changes to child communication skills and parental stress levels were also investigated.

Methods: A single subject, multiple baselines across behaviors experiment was conducted …

Voice Disorders Secondary To Thyroidectomy: A Case Study, Samantha D'Agostino Jan 2019

Voice Disorders Secondary To Thyroidectomy: A Case Study, Samantha D'Agostino

ETD Archive

The thyroid is an important gland that aids in development. Located anteriorly at the base of the neck, the thyroid produces hormones that regulate metabolism. Thyroid dysfunction can lead to excess or reduced production of hormones known as hyper and hypothyroidism. Usually affecting women, hyper and hypothyroidism can be life-threatening. A well-known treatment is a thyroidectomy, or removal of the thyroid gland. Many people report vocal change secondary to thyroidectomy. Dysfunction can result from intubation during surgery or damage to laryngeal nerves and/or muscles. A participant’s low intensity and difficulty with projection prompted a case-study to examine the laryngeal area …

Latina Educators Testimonios On Their Journeys Through The Teaching Pipeline: What Can Be Learned, Adriana E. Trombetta

ETD Archive

There is ample evidence of a leaky teaching pipeline, from attending high school, college, and teacher preparation programs to teaching in urban schools, which puts forth barriers for the success of the Hispanic population in a systemic way (Epstein, 2005; Irizarry & Donaldson, 2012; Sleeter, 2017; Téllez, 1999). This qualitative study, analyzed through a lens of Latino Critical Race Theory and Latina Feminism, focused on gathering information about urban Midwestern Latina teachers’ journeys through the pipeline and suggestions to clear the path for future Latina teachers based on testimonios obtained in interviews and a focus group. The inclusion of the …

Uruguay Supporting Globalization And Access Through English Language Education Policy, Valeriana Colon Jan 2019

Uruguay Supporting Globalization And Access Through English Language Education Policy, Valeriana Colon

Teaching and Learning Publications

With a comparatively small population and a little over half the country’s population living in the capitol city (The World Factbook: Uruguay, 2019), connectivity internationally and access nationally are important to Uruguay. According to Uruguay’s Commission on Language Policy, English language legislation emerged from national demand to know English for global trade, technology, and academia (Administración Nacional de Educación Pública [ANEP], 2008). Public dialog often depicts the universalization of English as a highly valued commodity essential for student success (Canale, 2011). An example of this is the historic use of internationally recognized standardized exams as a means to gain international …

The Demand For Unilateral Secession In Catalonia: While The Cause Is Compelling, Secession Would Not Be Legal Under International Law, Logan Hayes Jan 2019

The Demand For Unilateral Secession In Catalonia: While The Cause Is Compelling, Secession Would Not Be Legal Under International Law, Logan Hayes

University of Baltimore Journal of International Law

Tensions between Catalonia and Spain have finally boiled over, leading to Catalonia’s decision to unilaterally secede from Spain. On October 1, 2017, an overwhelming 90% of voters chose to leave Spain in a referendum held by the Catalonian parliament. On October 10, 2017, Carles Puigdemont, President of Catalonia, gave a speech claiming that “with the results of the referendum on October first, Catalonia has earned the right to be an independent state.” The issue has now become whether Catalonia has the right, under international law, to maintain their unilateral secession from Spain in order to form their own independent nation. …

Maneuvering Past Meaning: Queering Language Through Trans-Poetics, Brooke Ingram Jan 2019

Maneuvering Past Meaning: Queering Language Through Trans-Poetics, Brooke Ingram

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Queer studies today has seen a rise in analysis of the trans subject. While previous research has focused on the queer body and on the term queer, my interest in trans studies is in the form and function of language. That focus on the structures of language is what underlies this thesis. My claim is that queering language is visible in the authors I cover in the form of what I call trans-poetics. I focus on keri edwards’ succubus in my pocket and Moss Angel’s Sea-Witch Volume 1. In edwards, I locate a displaced “I” and thus a displaced subjectivity …

Over the past 30 years, there has been a growing need to strengthen educators’ mathematical skills through additional training. Nationwide, companies such as Exxon Mobile (1988) have created mathematics and science initiatives to improve teachers’ skills in the classroom. It is important that school systems explore ways to ensure students receive quality mathematics instruction from well trained, confident teachers who understand the content, can use instructional/assessment strategies, and to understand how students learn mathematics. The purpose of this study was to examine the confidence levels in mathematical content and pedagogy of graduates of the Elementary Mathematics Specialist (EMS) program. This …

A Phenomenological Investigation Of Mindfulness Practice Through The Lived Experiences Of Secondary Educators, Karen H. Styers

Education Dissertations and Projects

Teacher burnout and stress are at an all-time high. The teaching profession is reported to be one of the most stressful occupations, especially in 21st century learning environments. The researcher discovered mindfulness and was amazed how this practice allowed her to “breathe” through the difficult and challenging moments. Inspired by her own mindfulness practice, the researcher wanted to discover if mindfulness was as powerful a tool to other mindfulness teachers and educators. This phenomenological investigation explored the lived experiences of 11 secondary educators who self-identify as mindfulness practitioners. Through carefully constructed open-ended questions, the researcher was able to delve into …

African American English, School Demographics, And Literacy Achievement In Reading Recovery, Brandynne Thompson Jan 2019

African American English, School Demographics, And Literacy Achievement In Reading Recovery, Brandynne Thompson

Education Dissertations and Projects

African-American students continue to lag behind White peers in nationwide test scores, in part due to deficits in literacy skills which may be connected to use of African American English (AAE) in the school setting. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between exposure to varying levels of mainstream American English (MAE) for AAE-speaking students and specific literacy skills during Reading Recovery intervention. Elementary schools were designated as high exposure or low exposure to MAE based on school racial demographics, and pre and postintervention scores of first-grade students in Reading Recovery intervention were analyzed to determine differences. …

Teacher Perceptions Of Formative Assessments On Student Learning In K-12 Classrooms, Stacey Robinson Jan 2019

Teacher Perceptions Of Formative Assessments On Student Learning In K-12 Classrooms, Stacey Robinson

Education Dissertations and Projects

A mixed methods design was utilized to examine teacher perceptions of formative assessments and its impact on student motivation. Teachers from 32 public schools in a southeastern school district were invited to participate in a formative assessment survey using a Likert scale to share their perceptions of their understanding and use of formative assessments in the classroom. The survey and interview items addressed teachers’ own self-efficacy values as they relate to their implementation of formative assessments and their relationship with motivating students to learn. Data analysis indicated most teachers had a strong understanding of formative assessments, but some of their …

Relational Response: Preservice Teachers Providing Writing Feedback In Three Middle School Partnerships, Beth M. Lehman Ph.D., Jenny M. Martin Ph.D., Karen Santos Rogers Ph.D.

Teacher Education Program Faculty Scholarship

Providing meaningful feedback to student writers is a nuanced, fully human endeavor. Thus, teaching preservice teachers, in all disciplines, to respond to students’ writing is a complex task, one that requires intentional instruction and practice. In this article, we use practitioner inquiry to analyze our experiences and teaching approaches with preservice teachers who provided feedback to middle school writers through three public school partnerships. The partnerships employed varied modes of communication, including digital platforms, paper notebooks, letter writing, one-to-one tutoring, and face-to-face school visits. Response patterns suggest authentic experiences that explicitly teach and support writing practice spur the ability of …

An Abundance Of Boys: Addressing The Factors That Cause Gender Disproportionality In Special Education, Andrew James Almendinger Jan 2019

An Abundance Of Boys: Addressing The Factors That Cause Gender Disproportionality In Special Education, Andrew James Almendinger

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The gender distribution in special education is skewed heavily toward boys, who outnumber girls at an overall rate of 2 to 1. The decision to place a student in special education programming has severe implications, whether it be positive or negative. In order to better understand why this ratio exists, it is necessary to determine the reasons behind the disproportion. Some of the main causative factors for gender disproportion in special education fall under the umbrella of genetics, physiology, and school structure. It appears that boys are overrepresented in special education, conversely it appears that girls are underrepresented, both of …

Thematic And Narratological Affinities In George Eliot’S Felix Holt And Theodor Fontane’S Frau Jenny Treibel, Monica Felix Jan 2019

Thematic And Narratological Affinities In George Eliot’S Felix Holt And Theodor Fontane’S Frau Jenny Treibel, Monica Felix

German Journal Sprache Literatur Kultur

This article investigates affinities in George Eliot’s “Felix Holt: the Radical” and Theodor Fontane’s “Frau Jenny Treibel.” Both texts present suggestive narratological and thematic affinities in how the 19th-century female identity is articulated within the socio-political framework of society novels. This analysis interrogates the boundaries of a ‘sentimental education’ to uncover deeper layers distinguishing Bildung from Herzensbildung, thereby placing greater emphasis on women’s romantic education in the public performance of identity.

“[T]here is no private life which has not been determined by a wider public life... ”

-George Eliot, Felix Holt: The Radical

“Männer männlich, Weiber weiblich.”

Aspekte Der Psychoanalyse Und Der Subjektivität In Judith Hermanns Erzählung ‘Sonja’, Martha Christine SüSs Jan 2019

Aspekte Der Psychoanalyse Und Der Subjektivität In Judith Hermanns Erzählung ‘Sonja’, Martha Christine SüSs

Preparing Prospective Teachers To Teach Culturally Diverse Populations, Carrie Kondor, Angela Owusu-Ansah, Lynn Keyne-Michaels Jan 2019

Preparing Prospective Teachers To Teach Culturally Diverse Populations, Carrie Kondor, Angela Owusu-Ansah, Lynn Keyne-Michaels

CUP Faculty Research

Out of every three students enrolled in either elementary or secondary school in the United States, one is of a racial or ethnic minority, whereas about 87% of the teachers are White and female. The rate of increase in minority K-12 students, who are often also living in poverty, is projected to increase to 41% by the year 2020 (National Center for Education Statistics, 2007). In contrast, those coming into teaching, and those who teach prospective teachers [remain for the most part] White females who have been raised in middle class homes in rural and suburban communities, strengthening the persistence …

Epistemological Aspects Of Hope, Matthew A. Benton Jan 2019

Epistemological Aspects Of Hope, Matthew A. Benton

SPU Works

Hope is an attitude with a distinctive epistemological dimension: it is incompatible with knowledge. This chapter examines hope as it relates to knowledge but also to probability and inductive considerations. Such epistemic constraints can make hope either impossible, or, when hope remains possible, they affect how one’s epistemic situation can make hope rational rather than irrational. Such issues are especially relevant to when hopefulness may permissibly figure in practical deliberation over a course of action. So I consider cases of second-order inductive reflection on when one should, or should not, hope for an outcome with which one has a long …

Stigma, Loss Of Face, And Help-Seeking Attitudes Among South Korean College Students, Paul Youngbin Kim, Kyujin Yon Jan 2019

Stigma, Loss Of Face, And Help-Seeking Attitudes Among South Korean College Students, Paul Youngbin Kim, Kyujin Yon

SPU Works

This study investigated empirical associations between others stigma (predictor), self-stigma (mediator), loss of face concerns (moderator), and professional help-seeking attitudes (outcome) among South Korean college students (N = 485). We also explored the dimensionality of close others and public stigmas using bifactor analysis and ancillary measures. Participants were recruited from several universities in South Korea. They completed an online survey containing demographic questions and study measures. Bifactor analysis results indicated that close others and public stigmas may be better treated as a unidimensional measure (i.e., others stigma). Mediation and moderated mediation analyses indicated that others stigma predicted self-stigma, which …

El Cambio De Código Dentro De Una Compañía Bilingüe, Montserrat Ricossa Jan 2019

El Cambio De Código Dentro De Una Compañía Bilingüe, Montserrat Ricossa
