Use Of And Access To Abortion Services Among Asian And Immigrant Populations In The United States, Sheila Desai
Use Of And Access To Abortion Services Among Asian And Immigrant Populations In The United States, Sheila Desai
Dissertations and Theses
Background: Abortion is common in the United States (U.S.) and a critical component of comprehensive reproductive health care. Yet, little research has documented patterns of abortion use among Asian populations or potential barriers to abortion care among immigrants in the U.S., two rapidly growing but understudied populations. In response, this dissertation aims to examine use of and access to abortion services among individuals obtaining abortions in the U.S., focusing specifically on Asians in New York City (NYC), immigrants in the U.S., and individuals living in high immigrant concentration neighborhoods in the U.S.

Sexual Aggression In Greek Life: Perceptions, Definitions, And Recommendations For Prevention, Lauren Moss-Racusin
Sexual Aggression In Greek Life: Perceptions, Definitions, And Recommendations For Prevention, Lauren Moss-Racusin
Doctoral Dissertations
Sexual aggression is a major public health issue in higher education settings. The overall objective of this study was to examine whether Greek-affiliated students differ from unaffiliated students in how they view sexual aggression, and in what types of strategies they believe could reduce it. This information can enhance the effectiveness of prevention efforts by facilitating more targeted and engaging programming. A convenience sample of 450 undergraduate students at a large public university in the northeastern United States completed a survey on their views of sexual aggression, including its meaning, severity, frequency, contributing factors, reporting, and importance. They also made …
What Is A Healthy Body? Asking For A Friend. A Mini Ethnography About Undergraduate Women At Seattle University And Their Relationships With Food And Exercise., Haley R. Witt
SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal
Transitional periods have been identified as potential triggers for eating disorders in college students (Karges 2016). Risk factors for eating disorders can be biological, psychological, and sociocultural (National Eating Disorder Association 2018). The sociocultural risk of eating disorders includes weight stigma which, according to feminist philosopher Susan Bordo, can greatly impact the self-image of North American women. Bordo refers to the “ideal” female body as the “slender body,” one that is reflected and glorified in contemporary media (1993). Although undergraduate women are a potentially fragile population, as they are away from their childhood eating and exercise routines and in an …
‘I Warrant You We Will Play Our Parts’: The Role Of Performance In The Taming Of The Shrew., Amanda Fawcett
‘I Warrant You We Will Play Our Parts’: The Role Of Performance In The Taming Of The Shrew., Amanda Fawcett
SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal
Shakespeare’s play, The Taming of the Shrew, has a long and contentious history due to the discontinuities regarding its portrayal of naturalized gender hierarchies. This paper seeks to complicate a prescriptive reading of the play’s gender politics by unpacking the role of metatheatrics and gender performance within its narrative. This paper draws on historicist and Shakespearean scholars to highlight how its metatheatrical Induction and the role of gender performativity call attention to the instability and artifice of early-modern patriarchy. The play’s Induction establishes a framework of performance that undermines the misogyny of the events in Padua, for it forces the …
Romanticizing Abuse: Comparing The Depiction Of Violence In Brontë’S Wuthering Heights And Meyer’S Twilight Series., Emily Boynton
Romanticizing Abuse: Comparing The Depiction Of Violence In Brontë’S Wuthering Heights And Meyer’S Twilight Series., Emily Boynton
SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal
When Wuthering Heights was first released in 1846, readers were horrified by the relentless violence which the characters use to communicate hatred, passion, and obsessive love (Baldellou, 148). Although Brontë’s book was first perceived as monstrous, the text is now widely regarded as an epic love story. This shift has largely occurred because of the adaptations of Wuthering Heights which depict the violence within the novel as a feature of idyllic love. This paper examines the differences between the authors’ treatment of domestic violence in Wuthering Heights and Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. I argue that in Wuthering Heights Catherine and …
The Consequences Of Universities Overlooking The Challenges Faced By International Students., Chhavi Mehra
The Consequences Of Universities Overlooking The Challenges Faced By International Students., Chhavi Mehra
SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal
Each year, more than a million international students arrive in universities in the United States, bringing valuable cultural, academic, and intellectual backgrounds, as well as revenue to these universities. However, the values these students bring are often overlooked when universities do not factor in the life circumstances of these students, creating unintended barriers for these students to succeed. These barriers reduce the contributions that international students make to the campus community. This essay uses a philosophical and civil lens to explore this problem and argue for a civil framework to help universities be better hosts to international students, enabling these …

Empowered Learning Systems In Student Success, Craig C. Laupheimer
Education | Master's Theses
Abstract/Description
Although various support systems are attempted by public schools to cause changes in student motivation and academic performance, students continue to consistently under perform and doubt their academic potential. A literature review revealed a growing body of research outlining a direct relationship between internal beliefs and performance outcomes. Yet little has been done to understand student thought patterns from their perspective, or to what extent they are able to recognize and address the internal systems of language, belief, and emotion that interact with learning. By analyzing a wide range of student perspectives, this study examines what tools and strategies …

Design For Care In The Peripheries: Arts-Based Research As An Empowering Process With Communities, Satu Miettinen, Melanie Sarantou, Essi Kuure
Nordes Conference Series
Arts-based research (ABR), its potential for participation and collaboration, can create insights and understanding of complex societal structures. It can also be used as an approach to find mindful solutions with peripheral communities. The paper argues that ABR, supported by practical collaborative processes, can offer suitable approaches to design for care by including local stakeholders in community-led development processes. This paper presents a Life Story Mandala tool that enables researchers and art and design practitioners to manage complex societal development processes in a globalised world (Bonsiepe 2006). The tool was developed during two global research cycles in South Australia and …
Three Ecologies Diffracted: Intersectionality For Ecological Caring, Martín Ávila
Three Ecologies Diffracted: Intersectionality For Ecological Caring, Martín Ávila
Nordes Conference Series
This essay commemorates the 30th anniversary of the publication of Félix Guattari’s The Three Ecologies. It does so by proposing a ‘diffractive’ reading of the book, suggesting latent potential in each of the overlapping “ecologies” that conformed the ecosophy sketched by Guattari. There are mainly two aspects of The Three Ecologies addressed in this essay. Firstly, the understanding of the general frame of the interrelation of the three ecologies as an “intersectional” approach. Secondly, the understanding of this form of intersectionality as a possible platform to acknowledge other-than human ‘intersections’. Through the essay I exemplify with one of my own …
Identities Shaped By Creative (Design) Journeys, Stephen Awoniyi
Identities Shaped By Creative (Design) Journeys, Stephen Awoniyi
Nordes Conference Series
The current paper presents an exploration of creating or making. We interviewed several makers of creative work, using a creative piece each had made as a conversation core. Their descriptions of making journeys marked out coupling of processes and outcomes. Comanaging both structural components involved temporally-delimited stages of actional and conceptional unfolding. Doing and thinking, however, also sketched an outline of a personality at a moment in time. These were all fluid transactions. Based on accounts of making journeys which circumscribed person-work amalgamations, we described a dispersion of markers across a dispositional field negotiated by creators. The creative operation can …

Jordan Journal of Islamic Studies
The research addresses (Sahaba’) Companions’ effects and scholars' attention to their impact. In addition, it aims to highlight the concern of Imam al-Bukhari on (Sahaba’) Companions’ effects which have been significantly examined in his chapter headings. This study specifically aimed to highlight the chapter of Purification (Kitab Al-Taharah). The study has found Bukharis’ goal of addressing these effects, has showed his approach, and has explained the reasons of mention these effects.
The research concluded the importance of studying the effects of (Sahaba’) and the attention to them. This is because the effects are being a reference when scientists difference and …
Darkness, Depression, And Descent In Anglo-Saxon England, Ruth Wehlau
Darkness, Depression, And Descent In Anglo-Saxon England, Ruth Wehlau
Richard Rawlinson Center Series
This collection of essays examines the motifs of darkness, depression, and descent in both literal and figurative manifestations within a variety of Anglo-Saxon texts, including the Old English Consolation of Philosophy, Beowulf, Life of Saint Guthlac, the Junius manuscript, the Wonders of the East, and the Battle of Maldon. Essays deal with such topics as cosmic emptiness, descent into the grave, and recurrent grief. In their analyses, the essays reveal the breadth of this imagery in Anglo-Saxon literature as it is used to describe thought and emotion, as well as the limits to knowledge and …

Diffusion Of Inclusion: Measuring Willingness To Adopt Inclusive Teaching Strategies In Nursing Educational Environments, Janet A. Levey
Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to: (1) examine psychometric properties of the Willingness to Adopt Inclusive Teaching Strategies (ITSinNE) instrument and (2) measure factors influencing a nurse educator's willingness to adopt inclusive teaching strategies based in universal design for instruction (UDI). Universal design for instruction (UDI) is one approach to facilitate multiple ways of learning and evaluation in various learning environments for all learners; however, it is not well known or researched in nursing education. Diffusion of innovation theory (Rogers, 2003) and universal design for instruction (McGuire & Scott, 2006) provided the theoretical framework for the study. A cross-sectional …

Neuro-Correlates Of Word Processing Among Four-And-Five-Year-Old Children From Homes Varying In Socio-Economic Status, Wendy Olsen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A large body of research relates families’ socioeconomic status (SES) to child language development (Hoff & Tian, 2005). Results from these studies indicate preschoolers from low SES backgrounds may have underdeveloped linguistic foundations required for future academic success (Sirin, 2005; Lacouri & Tissington, 2011). These differences have been said to create a 30 million word-gap between the language experiences of low and middle to high SES children by the age of 3 years. Thus, children who come from lower SES backgrounds often lack the vocabulary knowledge used in school and in textbooks (Hart & Risley, 1995). One index of SES …

Knowledge, Concerns, And Interventions Related To D / Deaf English Learners, Molly Beth Turner
Theses and Dissertations
In education today, there is an increasing population of individuals who are d/Deaf/Hard of Hearing and English Learners (d/DHH/ELs). This population of students need innovative teaching strategies to achieve optimal outcomes. Schools are challenged with providing education to these students, and there are many barriers to overcome. Teachers receive little to no education on how to teach this combined population of learners. Students who are d/DHH/ELs arrive to the educational setting with many barriers that are present in both the school and home.
A review of the literature revealed that minimal strategies exist to support the d/DHH/EL population. Literacy strategies …
Determining The Level Of Cultural Competence Of College Police Departments: A Study Of Three Different Campuses, Michelle Fletcher, Randolph Burnside, Stephanie Pink-Harper
Determining The Level Of Cultural Competence Of College Police Departments: A Study Of Three Different Campuses, Michelle Fletcher, Randolph Burnside, Stephanie Pink-Harper
Journal of Public Management & Social Policy
This research examines the understanding that police chiefs on three college campuses have about cultural competence and determines how organizationally integrated cultural competence is in their police departments. This article uses semi-structured interviews and surveys to determine the levels and organizational integration of cultural competence. The findings indicate that there are varying degrees of cultural competence across the three departments. This was primarily based on three factors: the level of understanding of cultural competence, the emphasis placed on promoting cultural competence by departmental leadership, and administrative or legal barriers. Given the complexity of cultural competence, the article concludes by offering …

Intentional efforts for teacher education candidates to expand their worldview throughout their program of study can lead to growth in their intercultural development as measured by the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) (Hammer & Bennett, 1998). This study examines the impact of utilizing the Inter-Cultural Action Plan (ICAP), a results-guided self-designed action plan, on the developmental orientation (Bennett, 2011) of the candidate’s intercultural development as measured by the IDI. Significant impact on a candidate’s developmental orientation is identified when candidates take ownership of their experiences in the form of an action plan that includes coursework and out of class opportunities.

Creativity Advances Logical, Spatial, And Aesthetics Cognitive Abilities Through Self-Reflection And May Improve Spatial Sequencing Memory, Theresa Ferg
University College: Global Community Engagement Capstones
Creativity is defined as the ability to make new things or think of new ideas using multiple human aptitudes; it is inventiveness. Therefore, an important part of understanding creativity is through the self-reflection of your own cognitive components of logical, spatial and aesthetics thinking, which requires the cortical processes of spatial sequencing memory and affective symmetry gauging. Creativity is relevant to the global community and international education because it is an inherent human expression. A case study of the experience of the art teachers at the John Langdon Down Foundation A.C. (JLDF) Mexican art school (who chose to undergo a …

Objectives: Prior studies have noted that the number of PhDs in accounting are far below the number needed to meet program hiring needs. This paper reviews how the JD-CPA alternative credential is viewed by three academic accreditation bodies (SACS, ACBSP, and AACSB), the American Bar Association (ABA), and current accounting faculty at SACS-accredited institutions of higher education. Methods: An online survey was distributed to accounting educators at 439 institutions accredited by SACS, with 248 complete responses received. Individual demographics and institutional information were summarized statistically. Responses to two questions assessing inclination to hire an otherwise-qualified JD-CPA candidate using …

Less Than/More Than: Issues Associated With High-Impact Online Teaching And Learning, Ricardo Montelongo
Administrative Issues Journal
The increased presence of online education in higher education in the United States continues to challenge educators in their perceptions of teaching and learning experiences in virtual environments. While critiques of online education typically focus on its “less than” shortcomings, this literature review encourages educators to take a “more than” approach when providing institutional support. Online education provides beneficial outcomes for faculty, students, and administration when viewed for its potential in providing innovative teaching and learning. The financial challenges involved in providing these practices are addressed to justify investment in faculty effort, organizational support and professional development, and equitable student …
Rampant Non‐Factualism: A Metaphysical Framework And Its Treatment Of Vagueness, Alexander Jackson
Rampant Non‐Factualism: A Metaphysical Framework And Its Treatment Of Vagueness, Alexander Jackson
Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations
Rampant non-factualism is the view that all non-fundamental matters are non-factual, in a sense inspired by Kit Fine (2001). The first half of this paper argues that if we take non-factualism seriously for any matters, such as morality, then we should take rampant non-factualism seriously. The second half of the paper argues that rampant non-factualism makes possible an attractive theory of vagueness. We can give non-factualist accounts of non-fundamental matters that nicely characterize the vagueness they manifest (if any). I suggest that such non-factualist theories dissolve philosophical puzzlement about vagueness. In particular, the approach implies that philosophers should not try …
