The Importance Of Foreign Language Education At The Elementary Level, Dennys Canto Jul 2019

The Importance Of Foreign Language Education At The Elementary Level, Dennys Canto

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This literature review looks at the benefits of teaching foreign language at the elementary level versus at the secondary level. The review examines the linguistic and cognitive benefits of learning a foreign language at different levels. Young children are slower at learning languages than adolescent learners, in all aspects of language. However, young children gain many cognitive advantages from learning a foreign language and are more likely to become indistinguishable from native speakers. Foreign languages should be taught at the elementary level because it helps with literacy in English, it enhances problem solving, attentional control and the ability to switch …

Bilingualism Narrows Socioeconomic Disparities In Executive Functions And Self-Regulatory Behaviors During Early Childhood: Evidence From The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Andree Hartanto, Wei Xing Toh, Hwajin Yang Jul 2019

Bilingualism Narrows Socioeconomic Disparities In Executive Functions And Self-Regulatory Behaviors During Early Childhood: Evidence From The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Andree Hartanto, Wei Xing Toh, Hwajin Yang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Socioeconomic status (SES) and bilingualism have been shown to influence executive functioning during early childhood. Less is known, however, about how the two factors interact within an individual. By analyzing a nationally representative sample of approximately 18,200 children who were tracked from ages 5 to 7 across four waves, both higher SES and bilingualism were found to account for greater performance on the inhibition and shifting aspects of executive functions (EF) and self‐regulatory behaviors in classroom. However, only SES reliably predicted verbal working memory. Furthermore, bilingualism moderated the effects of SES by ameliorating the detrimental consequences of low‐SES on EF …

Judicial Narrative And Rape Myths: The Farooqui Case, Arun Sagar Jul 2019

Judicial Narrative And Rape Myths: The Farooqui Case, Arun Sagar

Socio-Legal Review

A criminal trial is constructed around various narratives put forward by the prosecution and by the defence, which then crystallize in the narrative established by the judgment. All these narratives rely on background narrative scripts and cultural assumptions that provide stock character roles and interpretations. This paper examines the High Court's and the Supreme Court's treatment of the high-profile Mahmood Farooqui rape case, as an illustration of how prevalent rape myths inform judicial discourse in rape cases and colour the judicial narrative reconstruction of events. Both appellate Courts operate in the discursive register typically used by the defence in rape …

The Effects Of Autism Symptom Severity And Social Anxiety On Pragmatic Language In Young Adult Males With Fragile X Syndrome, Sara Mcgrath Matherly Jul 2019

The Effects Of Autism Symptom Severity And Social Anxiety On Pragmatic Language In Young Adult Males With Fragile X Syndrome, Sara Mcgrath Matherly

Theses and Dissertations

Pragmatic, or social, language skills play a pivotal role in abilities that facilitate interpersonal relationships and independence, particularly in adulthood. Pragmatic language deficits are considered a core trait of males with fragile X syndrome (FXS); however, mechanisms that influence these abilities are not well known. This research is also limited by a lack of valid assessments that adequately capture pragmatic language skills. The present dissertation is the first to examine pragmatic language skills and mechanisms that influence these abilities using a novel, dynamic language assessment, the Yale in vivo Pragmatic Protocol (YiPP) in young adult males with FXS. Results revealed …

Embodied Truths: How Dynamic Gestures And Speech Contribute To Mathematical Proof Practices, Elizabeth L. Pier, Candace Walkington, Virginia Clinton, Rebecca Boncoddo, Caroline Williams-Pierce, Martha W. Alibali, Mitchell J. Nathan Jul 2019

Embodied Truths: How Dynamic Gestures And Speech Contribute To Mathematical Proof Practices, Elizabeth L. Pier, Candace Walkington, Virginia Clinton, Rebecca Boncoddo, Caroline Williams-Pierce, Martha W. Alibali, Mitchell J. Nathan

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Grounded and embodied theories of cognition suggest that both language and the body play crucial roles in grounding higher-order thought. This paper investigates how particular forms of speech and gesture function together to support abstract thought in mathematical proof construction. We use computerized text analysis software to evaluate how speech patterns support valid proof construction for two different tasks, and we use gesture analysis to investigate how dynamic gestures—those gestures that depict and transform mathematical objects—further support proof practices above and beyond speech patterns. We also evaluate the degree to which speech and gesture convey distinct information about mathematical reasoning …

Constructing Professional Identities: Native English-Speaking Teachers In South Korea, Natalie-Jane Howard Jul 2019

Constructing Professional Identities: Native English-Speaking Teachers In South Korea, Natalie-Jane Howard

The Qualitative Report

Responding to globalisation, a ubiquitous obsession with English has pervaded South Korea and led to the employment of tens of thousands of expatriate English teachers. However, native-speaking English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers may be subject to marginalisation and acculturation difficulties as they navigate overseas employment contexts. Moreover, scholars question the legitimacy of their careers and challenge the bias for their native-speaker expertise. Against this contentious backdrop, this study explores how the experiences and beliefs of native-speaking EFL teachers both promote and hinder their professional identity constructions. Adopting a qualitative, interpretivist approach, interviews are mobilised to document the participants’ …

Design Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Like (Pid) Controller For Trajectory Tracking Of Mobile Robot, Mohamed J., Mustafa Y. Jul 2019

Design Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Like (Pid) Controller For Trajectory Tracking Of Mobile Robot, Mohamed J., Mustafa Y.

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

One of the major problems in the field of mobile robots is the trajectory tracking problem. There are a big number of investigations for different control strategies that have been used to control the motion of the mobile robot when the nonlinear kinematic model of mobile robots was considered. The trajectory tracking control of autonomous wheeled mobile robot in a changing unstructured environment needs to take into account different types of uncertainties. Type-1 fuzzy logic sets present limitations in handling those uncertainties while type-2 fuzzy logic sets can manage these uncertainties to give a superior performance. This paper focuses on …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Background: Adverse mental health outcomes have been previously reported among survivors of natural disasters. Available studies mostly focus on risk factors and not resilience. In 2015, a series of earthquakes caused massive loss of lives and livelihood in Nepal. Epidemiological data pertaining to youth mental health in Nepal is limited. Information about the post-earthquake mental health of youth who were exposed to earthquakes during their adolescence in Nepal is scarce.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to address risk and resilience factors related to mental health among college-attending Nepali youth (18-20 years) exposed to the 2015 earthquake during their …

Measuring Congestion For Strategic Highway Investment For Tomorrow (Shift) Implementation (Pl-32), Mei Chen, Xu Zhang, Fahmida Rahman, Jacob Brashear, Reginald R. Souleyrette

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has moved toward a data-driven decision-making process, the Strategic Highway Investment Formula for Tomorrow (SHIFT), to allocate funds for highway improvement projects. SHIFT requires that candidate projects be scored on five critical metrics: safety, asset management, congestion, economic growth, and benefit/cost analysis.

The measure of congestion used in SHIFT 2018 was a combination of volume-to-service flow ratio (VSF) and design hourly volume (DHV). VSF is a traditional performance measure developed based on limited data, primarily for sketch planning purposes. However, it does not accurately reflect the dynamics of traffic congestion of many facilities.

This report …

Tinjauan Terhadap Konsep Keadilan Spasial Dan Partisipasi Masyarakat Dalam Perencanaan Dan Pengendalian Pemanfaatan Ruang Pada Program Normalisasi Ciliwung Di Provinsi Dki Jakarta, Shafira Anindia Alif Hexagraha, Savitri Nur Setyorini Jul 2019

Tinjauan Terhadap Konsep Keadilan Spasial Dan Partisipasi Masyarakat Dalam Perencanaan Dan Pengendalian Pemanfaatan Ruang Pada Program Normalisasi Ciliwung Di Provinsi Dki Jakarta, Shafira Anindia Alif Hexagraha, Savitri Nur Setyorini

Jurnal Hukum & Pembangunan

The idea of public interest in spatial planning is a two-sided claim. The government often uses it to enforce spatial plan program without the consent of the affected groups. On the other hand, the affected groups also use it as their defense to protect their damaged rights. The idea of spatial justice is derived from progressive intellectual tradition that is highly aware of the severeness of injustice in urban spaces and hence demands radical reconception of spaces, governance, and spatial planning. Most influential intellectual tradition in spatial justice are Habermas’ Public Sphere, Harvey’s Right to The City, and Lefebvre’s Production …

Don’T Sugar Coat It, H Drayson Jul 2019

Don’T Sugar Coat It, H Drayson

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Sweethearts and bitter pills. At the end of a long, or particularly entangled love affair, there are often conversations that contain a certain sort of language, a feeling-talk, full of attempts at explanations, authenticity and honesty. It is a time for mapping and remapping neglected affects, putting aside desires, of trying to put into words what is not always articulated easily, in a context in which wrong words can harm. As if at a hospital appointment, fearful but resolute, we speak to our lovers as if we sense, but do not know, the worst. ‘Please doc,’ we say, ‘just give …

Indexation And Ideologies: Latinx And Nahuatl Terms In Our Identity Journey, David Martinez-Prieto Jul 2019

Indexation And Ideologies: Latinx And Nahuatl Terms In Our Identity Journey, David Martinez-Prieto

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

In this essay, I challenge unreflective linguistic indexation of Latino academia; specifically, the suppression of the inflexion “o” in generic nouns (as in Latinx) and appropriation of Nahuatl nouns. To do so, I analyze these two linguistic features in terms of historical macro- and micro-linguistic levels and, for the case of Latinx, I situate this socio-cultural practice in relation to Spanish morphology and semantics. Finally, I question if these linguistic practices of Latino (Latinx) scholars enhance group identity and social justice or, on the contrary, if this linguistic indexation merely isolates a selective group of U.S.-centered scholars.

Faculty And Staff Members' Awareness Of Inclusive Policies At Higher Educational Institutions, Reece Harty Jul 2019

Faculty And Staff Members' Awareness Of Inclusive Policies At Higher Educational Institutions, Reece Harty

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The identity of a person has many different layers from sexual orientation to race, morals and values, to even gender. As times progress, many individuals are finding that their identities are not easily defined and that their gender cannot be categorized into the current boxes that society has. This forces many to struggle with discerning who they really are and where they fit into societal structures. As more people explain how one may not subscribe to all of the gender expectations of the one identity, some have decided to identify as non-binary. Non-binary means that a person does not identify …

English Proficiency And Earnings Of U.S. Immigrants, Toni F. Moeller Jul 2019

English Proficiency And Earnings Of U.S. Immigrants, Toni F. Moeller

Proceedings of the Jepson Undergraduate Conference on International Economics

An earlier version of this research fulfilled a partial requirement of the Honors Thesis at the University of Northern Iowa.

Every year thousands of immigrants come to the United States and look to join the labor force. Most of these immigrants have a first language that is not English. This study analyzes how wage income, business and farm income, and investment income are affected by English proficiency in 2004, 2009, and 2014. I use data from the American Community Survey and a log-linear econometric model to explore this relationship. I conclude that wage income and business and farm income had …

Accordingly, the main study of this paper proposes a framework to explore the effects of success factors on AI adoption by integrating the technology, organization, and environment (TOE) framework and diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory. …

Conceptualizing Governance Decision Making: A Theoretical Model Of Mental Processes Derived Through Abduction, Matt Loesch Jul 2019

Conceptualizing Governance Decision Making: A Theoretical Model Of Mental Processes Derived Through Abduction, Matt Loesch

School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations

The field of Public Policy and Administration is heavily influenced by the decisions individuals make regarding matters of governance. These types of decisions can affect a broad scope of government-related activities ranging from esoteric debates about political ideology to policy development to specific ways in which people directly interact with public services. Unfortunately, in the view of this research, there is no sufficient model for conceptualizing governance decision making. This creates the focus of inquiry for this work, which is to examine how governance decisions are conceived of and formulated. The purpose of this research is then to analyze the …
