Access To Community-Based Hiv Services Among Transgender Women In Cambodia: Findings From A National Survey., Siyan Yi, Say Sok, Srean Chhim, Pheak Chhoun, Navy Chann, Sovannary Tuot, Phalkun Mun, Marija Pantelic

BACKGROUND: Globally, the prevalence of HIV among transgender women is more than 40 times higher than the prevalence in the general reproductive-age adults. They also face intersecting barriers to health, social, and legal services due to their hidden and stigmatized nature. Despite the particular needs, data regarding the access to services among transgender populations is scant globally. This study aims to identify characteristics of transgender women in Cambodia that may determine their accessibility to community-based HIV services.

METHODS: In the National Biological and Behavioral Survey 2016, a structured questionnaire was used for face-to-face interviews with 1375 sexually active transgender women …

Does Janus Vs. Afscme Signal The Death Of Mandatory Bar Associations?, Brendan Williams May 2019

Does Janus Vs. Afscme Signal The Death Of Mandatory Bar Associations?, Brendan Williams

Et Cetera

In Janus vs. AFSCME, a closely-divided U.S. Supreme Court overturned a 41-year-old precedent and ruled that the practice of public sector unions charging agency fees to non-members in bargaining units, without affirmative consent, was “compelled speech.” The dissent warned that the decision had weaponized the First Amendment, and noted that “almost all economic and regulatory policy affects or touches speech.”

Does the logic of Janus apply to mandatory bar association dues? There is strong evidence it does. And if it signals the death of mandatory bar associations, would that necessarily be a bad thing for the legal profession? This …

“By The People Most Affected”: Model Cities, Citizen Control, And The Broken Promises Of Urban Renewal, Sarah Rachel Siegel

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation stands at the intersection of civil rights social history, political history, and urban planning. Among the first academic work to recognize the significance of the Model Cities War on Poverty program, this dissertation explores how residents tried to make American cities safe places for poor people to live as full citizens. It argues that neighborhood activists in St. Louis and around the country used the War on Poverty and Model Cities specifically to make a bid for a permanent role in city planning for their neighborhoods. This was no less than an attempt to alter the relationship between …

The Ethical Challenge Of Conflicts Of Interest In Healthcare, Fahad Alhazmi May 2019

The Ethical Challenge Of Conflicts Of Interest In Healthcare, Fahad Alhazmi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Conflicts of interest are prevalent across all walks of society, and unfortunately, the healthcare industry is not immune to these impediments. Conflicts of interest arise when the objective of upholding a patients’ interest collide with the physicians’ secondary goals and is mostly but not always related to monetary gain.

To avoid conflict of interest, it is advisable for medical practitioners to weigh the pros and cons that their actions would inflict. Medical practices whose benefits outweigh the associated risks are ethically upright hence avoid conflict of interest.

Each section proposes solutions for the conflicts of interest encountered at the disparate …

Intervention Research For The Education And Empowerment Of Families Experiencing Homelessness: Exploring Knowledge Of Tenant Rights And Perceptions Of Personal Empowerment, Diane J. Irish May 2019

Intervention Research For The Education And Empowerment Of Families Experiencing Homelessness: Exploring Knowledge Of Tenant Rights And Perceptions Of Personal Empowerment, Diane J. Irish

Social Work Doctoral Dissertations

Family homelessness emerged as a social issue in the United States in the 1980s and has since established itself as a pervasive social problem. The issue of family homelessness is complex and multifaceted with multiple social, political, and economic contributing factors. Historically, society at large has been apt to attribute homelessness to individual faults and deficits, but the fact that family homelessness has only emerged and persisted as a notable social problem in recent decades hints at political and economic mechanisms at work that serve to complicate and perpetuate the problem. Tenant eviction is one such mechanism that appears to …

Unraveling Sex Trafficking Through Screening And Referrals, Rebecca Sarabia

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Abstract

Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery; sex trafficking is one form of human trafficking. Previous research has demonstrated that most trafficking victims encounter the healthcare system at some point during their trafficking experience. Patients who have been sex trafficked may experience profound psychological and physical trauma. Healthcare personnel are in key positions to screen for trafficking and to provide appropriate referrals; if an awareness of the problem exists. The purpose of this project was to increase OB/Gyn office staff confidence with sex trafficking screening and to complete appropriate referrals to address the identified needs. The project began …

The Legal Experiences Of The Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Community, Dillon Curren

The criminal justice system serves in many different ways for people. Sometimes, groups of people are underserved by the criminal justice system and cannot achieve the goals being set up by the criminal justice system to be a watchful guardian who is swift, certain, and fair. The following project will look at the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Community (D/HH) and their experiences with the criminal justice system in a series of working papers including a literature review of studies, papers, and documentation of experiences within the system. There are several obstacles between the two communities that causes tension and unfairness for …

Disruptive Leadership In Legal Education, Nicholas A. Mirkay, Palma Joy Strand May 2019

Disruptive Leadership In Legal Education, Nicholas A. Mirkay, Palma Joy Strand

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

Legal education and the legal profession are ripe for disruption. The crisis in legal education reflects an increasing mismatch between the limited services that the law and lawyers provide and the vast and acute societal need for legal services. The structure of academia generally and legal academia in particular, however, serves as an obstacle to the disruptive leadership that can initiate necessary adaptation. Here, we discuss our own experience with disruptive leadership and the backlash we received, as well as the risks of failing to embrace disruptive leadership in legal education going forward. “The act of leadership is not always …

Despite the broad understanding of globalization and its influences, this paper intends to fill the gaps on the scientific study of society, social patterns and interactions, and culture of everyday life as a result of globalization. This paper will discuss issues that arise during the phases of globalization and is observable in the advancement of technology, changes in economic relationships, influences on nation-states, regions/cities, and individuals. Symposium: Erie At Eighty: Choice Of Law Across The Disciplines: An Erie Approach To Privilege Doctrine, Megan M. La Belle

ConLawNOW

Privilege rules, which determine whether information is discoverable in a particular litigation, often vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Consequently, the Erie doctrine and other choice-of-law principles play an important role in shaping privilege law. This essay, written for the Sixth Annual Constitutional Law Conference at the University of Akron School of Law, considers two recent privilege cases—HannStar Display Corp. v. Sony Electronics, Inc. and In re Silver—which involved the California mediation privilege and the federal patent-agent privilege, respectively. While the HannStar court ignored well-established choice-of-law principles, the Silver decision shows that, when applied and interpreted appropriately, doctrines …
