Type X Strains Of Toxoplasma Gondii Are Virulent For Southern Sea Otters (Enhydra Lutris Nereis) And Present In Felids From Nearby Watersheds, Karen Shapiro, Elizabeth Vanwormer, Andrea Packham, Erin Dodd, Patricia A. Conrad, Melissa Miller

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Why some Toxoplasma gondii-infected southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis) develop fatal toxoplasmosis while others have incidental or mild chronic infections has long puzzled the scientific community. We assessed robust datasets on T. gondii molecular characterization in relation to detailed necropsy and histopathology results to evaluate whether parasite genotype influences pathological outcomes in sea otters that stranded along the central California coast. Genotypes isolated from sea otters were also compared with T. gondii strains circulating in felids from nearby coastal regions to assess land-to-sea parasite transmission. The predominant T. gondii genotypes isolated from 135 necropsied sea otters were atypical Type …

Exploration Of The Formation And Mechanism Of Vbnc State Of Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium During Hydrogen Peroxide Disinfection, Nie Xinying, Liao Hongmei, Liu Yuanfa

Food and Machinery

In order to determine the effective bactericidal concentration of hydrogen peroxide, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium was used as a target microorganism to explore the effect of hydrogen peroxide on activity and culturability of it in tap water and its viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state by means of molecular biology. The results showed that lower hydrogen peroxide concentration (0~15 mmol/L) could kill some S. Typhimurium, which could be completely sterilized with 1 mol/L hydrogen peroxide. It was also found that 4.08 lg(CFU/mL) S. Typhimurium could be induced into a VBNC state as exposure to 15 mmol/L hydrogen peroxide. The morphology and …

Gastroenterology Articles

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) are effective against hepatitis C virus and sustained virologic response is associated with reduced incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, there is controversy over the use of DAAs in patients with active or treated HCC and uncertainty about optimal management of these patients. We aimed to characterize attitudes and practice patterns of hepatology practitioners in the United States regarding the use of DAAs in patients with HCC.

METHODS: We conducted a survey of hepatology providers at 47 tertiary care centers in 25 states. Surveys were sent to 476 providers and we received 279 responses …

Should Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (Prep) Services Be Blamed For The Increased Rate Of Sexual Transmitted Infections?, Yeow Chye Ng, Jack J. Mayeux

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a lifesaving HIV prevention medication. Critics have shared their concerns for oral PrEP as it may be promoting unprotected sex among PrEP users, and indirectly may cause a new surge of sexual transmitted infections (STIs). This study suggests that information is inconclusive at this time.

Nephromyces Represents A Diverse And Novel Lineage Of The Apicomplexa That Has Retained Apicoplasts, Sergio A. Munoz-Gomez, Keira Durnin, Laura Eme, Christopher Paight, Christopher E. Lane, Mary B. Saffo, Claudio H. Slamovits

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

A most interesting exception within the parasitic Apicomplexa is Nephromyces, an extracellular, probably mutualistic, endosymbiont found living inside molgulid ascidian tunicates (i.e., sea squirts). Even though Nephromyces is now known to be an apicomplexan, many other questions about its nature remain unanswered. To gain further insights into the biology and evolutionary history of this unusual apicomplexan, we aimed to 1) find the precise phylogenetic position of Nephromyces within the Apicomplexa, 2) search for the apicoplast genome of Nephromyces, and 3) infer the major metabolic pathways in the apicoplast of Nephromyces. To do this, we sequenced a metagenome …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Invasive predators are responsible for almost 60% of all vertebrate extinctions worldwide with the most vulnerable faunas occurring on islands. The brown treesnake (Boiga irregularis) is a notorious invasive predator that caused the extirpation or extinction of most native forest birds on Guam. The success of avian reintroduction efforts on Guam will depend on whether snake-control techniques sufficiently reduce contact rates between brown treesnakes and reintroduced birds. Mouse-lure traps can successfully reduce brown treesnake populations at local scales. Over a 22-week period both with and without active snake removal, we evaluated snake-trap contact rates for mouse- and bird-lure traps. Bird-lure …

An Evaluation Of The Registration And Use Prospects For Four Candidate Toxicants For Controlling Invasive Mongooses (Herpestes Javanicus Auropunctatus), Emily W. Ruell, Chris N. Niebuhr, Robert T. Sugihara, Shane R. Siers Jul 2019

An Evaluation Of The Registration And Use Prospects For Four Candidate Toxicants For Controlling Invasive Mongooses (Herpestes Javanicus Auropunctatus), Emily W. Ruell, Chris N. Niebuhr, Robert T. Sugihara, Shane R. Siers

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The eradication or control of invasive small Indian mongooses from islands likely requires toxic baiting when removal by trapping proves insufficient. The one toxic bait currently registered for mongooses in the United States has relatively low palatability and efficacy for mongooses. Developing and registering a new pesticide can be very expensive, while funding for developing toxicants for mongooses is limited. Once registered, use of a toxic bait may be hindered by other factors, such as public opposition to an inhumane toxicant, poorer efficacy than expected, or if the toxic bait is difficult for applicators to apply or store. Therefore, we …

Applying Contemporary Management Principles To Implementing And Evaluating Value-Added Pharmacist Services., Shane P. Desselle, Leticia R Moczygemba, Antoinette B Coe, Karl Hess, David P Zgarrick

Faculty Publications & Research of the TUC College of Pharmacy

Value-added pharmacy services encompass traditional and emerging services provided by pharmacists to individual and entire populations of persons increasingly under the auspices of a public health mandate. The success of value-added pharmacy services is enhanced when they are carried out and assessed using appropriate theory-based paradigms. Many of the more important management theories for pharmacy services consider the "servicescape" of these services recognizing the uniqueness of each patient and service encounter that vary based upon health needs and myriad other factors. In addition, implementation science principles help ensure the financial viability and sustainability of these services. This commentary reviews some …

Conceptions Of Potency, Purity, And Synergy-By-Design: Toward Developing A Sowa Rigpa Medical Theory-Based Approach To Pharmaceutical Research, Tawni L. Tidwell, James H. Nettles

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Sowa Rigpa institutions and practitioners have growing interest in examining and legitimizing Sowa Rigpa formulas vis-à-vis pharmacological research methods, seeking scientific validation of what they view as ‘potency’ and ‘purity’ for their formulas. Likewise, the pharmacology researchers have demonstrated renewed interest in herbal medical traditions in mining for new drugs to address resistance, toxicity, and optimize what they view as ‘potency’ and ‘purity.’ However, differing conceptualizations emerge when the pharmacological drug discovery process is examined to determine what is being analyzed, how it is doing so, and what assumptions underlie such methods. Whether a formula is ‘active,’ ‘toxic’ or ‘effective’ …

Mixing It Up: The Impact Of Episodic Introgression On The Evolution Of High-Latitude Mesocarnivores, Jocelyn P. Colella Jul 2019

Mixing It Up: The Impact Of Episodic Introgression On The Evolution Of High-Latitude Mesocarnivores, Jocelyn P. Colella

Biology ETDs

At high latitudes, climatic oscillations have triggered repeated episodes of organismal divergence by geographically isolating populations. For terrestrial species, extended isolation in glacial refugia – ice-free regions that enable terrestrial species persistence through glacial maxima – is hypothesized to stimulate allopatric divergence. Alternatively, upon glacial recession, divergent populations expanded from independent glacial refugia and often contacted other diverging populations. In the absence of reproductive isolating mechanisms, this biogeographic process may trigger hybridization and ultimately, gene flow between divergent taxa. My dissertation research aims to understand how these episodic periods of isolation and contact have impacted the evolution of high latitude …
