Anura Distribution And Richness In A Tropical Montane Forest In Monteverde, Costa Rica, June 2019, Elizabeth L. Mcdonald Jun 2019

Anura Distribution And Richness In A Tropical Montane Forest In Monteverde, Costa Rica, June 2019, Elizabeth L. Mcdonald

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Tropical regions, especially tropical montane regions, are biodiversity hotspots for amphibians. In tropical montane forests, varying temperatures and precipitation along an elevational gradient create distinct Holdridge life-zones for the 51 species of frogs and toads in Monteverde, Costa Rica. However, changing climatic conditions, and other complex factors, have contributed to recent anuran declines in the Monteverde area and worldwide. Shifting abiotic conditions cause species to move to new areas with suitable conditions. Within this study, I establish a data set complimentary to previous baselines of anuran distributions in local areas. In doing so, current encountered distributions can be compared to …

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV), an exclusively human herpesvirus, causes chickenpox and establishes a latent infection in ganglia, reactivating decades later to produce zoster and associated neurological complications. An understanding of VZV neurotropism in humans has long been hampered by the lack of an adequate animal model. For example, experimental inoculation of VZV in small animals including guinea pigs and cotton rats results in the infection of ganglia but not a rash. The severe combined immune deficient human (SCID-hu) model allows the study of VZV neurotropism for human neural sub-populations. Simian varicella virus …

Eradication Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type-1 (Hiv-1)-Infected Cells, Nejat Düzgüneş, Krystyna Konopka Jun 2019

Eradication Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type-1 (Hiv-1)-Infected Cells, Nejat Düzgüneş, Krystyna Konopka

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Predictions made soon after the introduction of human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) protease inhibitors about potentially eradicating the cellular reservoirs of HIV-1 in infected individuals were too optimistic. The ability of the HIV-1 genome to remain in the chromosomes of resting CD4+ T cells and macrophages without being expressed (HIV-1 latency) has prompted studies to activate the cells in the hopes that the immune system can recognize and clear these cells. The absence of natural clearance of latently infected cells has led to the recognition that additional interventions are necessary. Here, we review the potential of utilizing suicide gene therapy …

Identification Of Novel Cyp2e1 Inhibitor To Investigate Cellular And Exosomal Cyp2e1-Mediated Toxicity, Mohammad Arifur Rahman Jun 2019

Identification Of Novel Cyp2e1 Inhibitor To Investigate Cellular And Exosomal Cyp2e1-Mediated Toxicity, Mohammad Arifur Rahman

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1)-mediated hepatic and extra-hepatic toxicity is of significant clinical importance. Diallyl sulfide (DAS) has been shown to prevent xenobiotics such as alcohol- (ALC/ETH), acetaminophen- (APAP) induced toxicity and disease (e.g. HIV-1) pathogenesis. DAS imparts its beneficial effect by inhibiting CYP2E1-mediated metabolism of xenobiotics, especially at high concentration. However, DAS also causes toxicity at relatively high dosages and with long exposure times. The objective of the first project was to find potent DAS analogs which can replace DAS as a research tool or as potential adjuvant therapy in CYP2E1-mediated pathologies.

Arachidin 3 Modulation Of Lipid Metabolism In Rotavirus Infections, Stormey Wisdom Jun 2019

Arachidin 3 Modulation Of Lipid Metabolism In Rotavirus Infections, Stormey Wisdom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rotavirus (RV) can cause severe and deadly gastroenteritis in young children, infants, and immunocompromised individuals. Previous studies have shown that arachidin 3 (A3) inhibits RV replication, and that RV replication is dependent on the presence of lipids. This study investigated the alteration of lipid metabolism by A3 in RV infected HT29.f8 cells. A decrease in the RV regulation of lipid biosynthesis genes was observed with the addition of A3 using qRT-PCR. Also, immunofluorescent and histochemical staining for neutral fats, a major component of cellular lipid droplets, revealed an increased accumulation with both RV and RV+A3 when compared to no virus …

Coercive Control In Long Term Sex Trafficking Relationships: Using Exhaustion To Control Victims, Nicole C. Bassil

Student Theses

The importance of coercive control tactics in maintaining women in commercial sex has been well-documented. Less known is how these tactics manifest in long-term relationships and how victims cope or react to establish patterns of control. The current study measured the temporal patterning of coercive control in long term sex trafficking relationships via wiretapped phone conversations between pimps and sex trafficked workers. In addition, victim responses of compliance versus resistance to coercive control tactics were measured. 68 phone calls over four months were transcribed and coded between two pimps and four women working in commercial sex. The findings indicate that …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The gut microbiota is extremely important for the health of the host across its lifespan. Recent studies have elucidated connections between the gut microbiota and neurological disease and disorders such as depression, anxiety, Alzheimer's disease (AD), autism, and a host of other brain illnesses. Dysbiosis of the normal gut flora can have negative consequences for humans, especially throughout key periods during our lifespan as the gut microbes change with age in both phenotype and number of bacterial species. Neurologic diseases, mental disorders, and euthymic states are influenced by alterations in the metabolites produced by gut microbial milieu. We introduce a …

The Lancet Commission On Global Health Law: The Transformative Power Of Law To Advance The Right To Health, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

A new report by The Lancet-O’Neill-Georgetown University Commission on Global Health and the Law shows how law can fulfill the global pledge of the human right to health, while “leaving no one behind.” I call this “global health with justice.” We need both health and justice. By global health, I mean ever increasing indicators of good health and increased longevity in all countries around the world. By justice I mean that the global “good” of health must be fairly distributed both within and among countries. The Lancet Commission report offers a comprehensive roadmap towards realizing the law’s power to make …

Do Stands Of Native Trees Harbor Different Invasive Species Than Stands Of Planted Pine?, Carly Mccameron, John Mccarthy, Dr. Kevin Geedey

Celebration of Learning

The most outstanding invasive species that can be found at Augustana’s Green Wing Environmental Laboratory are honeysuckle, buckthorn, multiflora rose, garlic mustard, autumn olive, and oriental bittersweet. These plants are not only disrupting the ecosystem at Green Wing, but they are doing it all over the country. The result of their disruption is that they have taken over entire habitats and left natural species with no way to compete for survival. To study this we used the line-point method as well as other forms of data collection to compare a non-native pine tree habitat to an area dominated by native …

A Behavioral And Physiological Investigation Of The Effects Of Nicotine On Human Reward Responding And Fear Conditioning, Alexandra N. Palmisano

Doctoral Dissertations

Although considerable progress has been made, we do not fully understand the neuropsychological properties of nicotine that drive nicotine dependence. The present body of work provides an original investigation of the effects of nicotine on behavioral and physiological responding for rewarding and aversive stimuli in humans, which arises from considerable nonhuman investigations of nicotine’s complex interactions in conditioned learning. In order to accomplish this goal, three distinct studies were conducted. Given evidence that nicotine enhances operant responding for nonpharmacological reinforcers, Study 1 assessed the ability of nicotine to enhance food reward sensitivity using a virtual reality conditioned place preference …
