Complicated Postoperative Course Secondary To Kratom Withdrawal: A Case Report, Anupam Gupta, George Luck, Andrew Ross
All Publications
We herein report a case of a 55-year-old female with an unusual case of post-operative kratom withdrawal. The patient's withdrawal symptoms subsequently contributed to complications and admission to the intensive care unit. Features of this case are discussed, alongside the management of kratom withdrawal and the implications of supplementation with unregulated herbal medications.
Government Spending Across The World: How The United States Compares, Michael P. Ettlinger, Jordan Hensley, Julia Vieira
Government Spending Across The World: How The United States Compares, Michael P. Ettlinger, Jordan Hensley, Julia Vieira
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Michael Ettlinger, Jordan Hensley, and Julia Vieira analyze how much the governments of different countries spend, and on what, to illuminate the range of fiscal policy options available and provide a basis for determining which approaches work best. They report that the United States ranks twenty-fourth in government spending as a share of GDP out of twenty-nine countries for which recent comparable data are available. The key determinant of where countries rank in overall government spending is the amount spent on social protection. The United States ranks last in spending on social protection as a share …
Evaluation Of Drought-Resistant Plants For Beneficial Insect Attraction, Benjamin Gluck
Evaluation Of Drought-Resistant Plants For Beneficial Insect Attraction, Benjamin Gluck
Master's Theses
Beneficial insects, such as natural enemies and pollinators, provide billions of dollars of ecological services to agricultural operations. However, as the climate changes, Connecticut is projected to have longer periods of drought. This could negatively impact the availability of flowering plants, and the beneficial insects who rely on their floral resources.
This research focuses on the diversity of insect visitors to five species of drought-resistant plants at the Plant Science Research and Educational facility. Over the two-year study the visitation frequency of pollinators and beneficial insects on the plants was observed, insect samples were collected for further identification. Agastache foeniculum …

Compassion Fatigue And Nursing Education: A Q-Methodology Study, Simone M. Wooten, Desiree Hensel
Biennial Convention (CONV)
This Q-methodology study explored how baccalaureate students experienced compassion and compassion fatigue during their pre-licensure nursing education. Thirty recruited participants from one nursing program in the Northeastern United States ranked-ordered their agreement with opinion statements about compassion in faculty, peers, and self. By-person factor analysis found three distinct viewpoints.

The Implementation Of An Open Source Electronic Medical Record At A Faith-Based Community Clinic, Gabri Warren
The Implementation Of An Open Source Electronic Medical Record At A Faith-Based Community Clinic, Gabri Warren
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Faith-based nursing and healthcare is increasingly gaining popularity as the industry looks to minimize costs and improve health outcomes. Historically, qualitative studies have not shown the extent to which individuals and communities are impacted by health initiatives initiated by faith institutions. Healthcare technology can help support the specialty by providing increased quantity and quality data to analyze. Traditional, proprietary EMRs are too costly; however, open source systems offer a low cost, and easily modifiable option to non-profit, or smaller organizations. The data collected by an open source system allows organizations to improve the care that patients receive, and helps guide …

Effectiveness Of The E-Nursus Children Intervention In The Training Of Nursing Students, Cristina Álvarez-García, Carmen Álvarez-Nieto, Janet Kelsey, Rachel Carter, Sebastián Sanz-Martos, Isabel M. López-Medina
School of Nursing and Midwifery
The paediatric population is the most vulnerable to exposure to environmental risk factors. Institutions of higher education have to equip nursing students with the attitudes, knowledge, and skills to respond to this using blended learning. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of e-NurSus Children intervention on student nurses’ attitudes, knowledge, and skills. A quasi-experimental study of time series was designed using pre and post educational intervention evaluation in 2018. The participants were nursing students (N = 267) from Spain (n = 110) and the United Kingdom (n = 157). Three instruments were used: the Sustainability Attitudes …

Using Poultry Litter Ash As A Fertilizer Source For Bermudagrass (Cynodon Dactylon) Establishment And Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda) Plantation, Crystal L. Vance
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Lower solubility of P in poultry litter ash (PLA) than conventional phosphorus (P) fertilizers such as triple superphosphate (TSP) may reduce P losses in drainage and runoff; however, lower P solubility may reduce its efficacy as a P source. A laboratory experiment was conducted to examine the effect of acidity on P release and the effect of different combustion temperatures on P solubility as a prerequisite to the following studies. The first research objective was to determine the effect of soil pH on the efficiency of PLA relative to TSP for establishment of common bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.) and …
The Impact Of Experimentally-Induced Perceived Discrimination On Substance Use, Kimberlye Elise Dean
The Impact Of Experimentally-Induced Perceived Discrimination On Substance Use, Kimberlye Elise Dean
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Substance use disorders (SUDs) are among the most debilitating psychiatric disorders. Although prevalence rates of SUDs are similar between White and Black adults, these groups experience differential treatment outcomes (e.g., Black adults with SUDs are more likely to report greater pre- and post-treatment substance use). Examining culture-specific correlates of racial differences in substance use is vital to improve understanding of the etiological and maintaining mechanisms of SUDs among Black adults. Perceived racial discrimination (PRD) is prospectively related to various substance use-related outcomes. Thus, some may use substances to alleviate psychological distress (e.g., anxiety) associated with PRD, which may over time …

Background Risk-adjusted adverse event (AE) rates have been used to measure the quality of pediatric and congenital cardiac catheterization laboratories. In other settings, failure to rescue (FTR) has demonstrated utility as a quality metric. Methods and Results A multicenter retrospective cohort study was performed using data from the IMPACT (Improving Adult and Congenital Treatment) Registry between January 2010 and December 2016. A modified FTR metric was developed for pediatric and congenital cardiac catheterization laboratories and then compared with pooled AEs. The associations between patient- and hospital-level factors and outcomes were evaluated using hierarchical logistic regression models. Hospital risk standardized ratios …
