Oscillations in the Earth’s temperature and the subsequent retreating and advancing of ice-sheets around the polar regions are thought to have played an important role in shaping the distribution and genetic structuring of contemporary high-latitude populations. After the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), retreating of the ice-sheets would have enabled early colonizers to rapidly occupy suitable niches to the exclusion of other conspecifics, thereby reducing genetic diversity at the leading-edge. Bottlenose dolphins (genus Tursiops) form distinct coastal and pelagic ecotypes, with finer-scale genetic structuring observed within each ecotype. We reconstruct the postglacial colonization of the Northeast Atlantic (NEA) by bottlenose dolphins …

From Ocean Sprawl To Blue-Green Infrastructure – A Uk Perspective On An Issue Of Global Significance, Ally J. Evans, Louise B. Firth, Stephen J. Hawkins, Alice E. Hall, Joseph E. Ironside, Richard C. Thompson, Pippa J. Moore

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Artificial structures are proliferating in the marine environment, resulting in ‘ocean sprawl’. In light of the potential environmental impacts of this, such as habitat loss and alteration, it is becoming increasingly important to incorporate ecologically-sensitive design into artificial marine structures. The principles of eco-engineering and green infrastructure are embedded in urban planning practice for terrestrial and freshwater development projects. In marine planning, however, eco-engineering of blue-green infrastructure remains an emerging concept. This note provides a UK perspective on the progress towards uptake of eco-engineering approaches for enhancing biodiversity on artificial marine structures. We emphasise that, despite a clear ‘policy pull’ …

Impacts Of The Mycotoxin Zearalenone On Growth And Photosynthetic Responses In Laboratory Populations Of Freshwater Macrophytes (Lemna Minor) And Microalgae (Pseudokirchneriella Subcapitata)., Ej Eagles, R Benstead, S Macdonald, R Handy, Th Hutchinson Jan 2019

Impacts Of The Mycotoxin Zearalenone On Growth And Photosynthetic Responses In Laboratory Populations Of Freshwater Macrophytes (Lemna Minor) And Microalgae (Pseudokirchneriella Subcapitata)., Ej Eagles, R Benstead, S Macdonald, R Handy, Th Hutchinson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Mycotoxins are an important class of chemicals of emerging concern, recently detected in aquatic environments, potentially reflecting the influence of fungicide resistance and climatic factors on fungal diseases in agricultural crops. Zearalenone (ZON) is a mycotoxin formed by Fusarium spp. and is known for its biological activity in animal tissues; both in vitro and in vivo. ZON has been reported in US and Polish surface waters at 0.7 - 96 ng/L, with agricultural run-off and wastewater treatment plants being the likely sources of mycotoxins. As some mycotoxins can induce phytotoxicity, laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate the toxicity of ZON …

Bioavailability And Effects Of Microplastics On Marine Zooplankton: A Review., Zara L.R. Botterell, Nicola Beaumont, Tarquin Dorrington, Michael Steinke, Richard C. Thompson, Penelope K. Lindeque Jan 2019

Bioavailability And Effects Of Microplastics On Marine Zooplankton: A Review., Zara L.R. Botterell, Nicola Beaumont, Tarquin Dorrington, Michael Steinke, Richard C. Thompson, Penelope K. Lindeque

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Microplastics are abundant and widespread in the marine environment. They are a contaminant of global environmental and economic concern. Due to their small size a wide range of marine species, including zooplankton can ingest them. Research has shown that microplastics are readily ingested by several zooplankton taxa, with associated negative impacts on biological processes. Zooplankton is a crucial food source for many secondary consumers, consequently this represents a route whereby microplastic could enter the food web and transfer up the trophic levels. In this review we aim to: 1) evaluate the current knowledge base regarding microplastic ingestion by zooplankton in …

A Catchment-Scale Perspective Of Plastic Pollution, Fredric M. Windsor, Isabelle Durance, Alice A. Horton, Richard C. Thompson, Charles R. Tyler, Steve J. Ormerod

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Plastic pollution is distributed across the globe, but compared with marine environments, there is only rudimentary understanding of the distribution and effects of plastics in other ecosystems. Here, we review the transport and effects of plastics across terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments. We focus on hydrological catchments as well-defined landscape units that provide an integrating scale at which plastic pollution can be investigated and managed. Diverse processes are responsible for the observed ubiquity of plastic pollution, but sources, fluxes and sinks in river catchments are poorly quantified. Early indications are that rivers are hotspots of plastic pollution, supporting some of …

Monthly Spending Dynamics Of The Elderly Following A Health Shock: Evidence From Singapore, Terence C. Cheng, Jing Li, Rhema Vaithianathan

Research Collection School Of Economics

We use novel longitudinal data from 19 monthly waves of the Singapore Life Panel to examine the short-term dynamics of the effects health shocks have on household health and non-health spending and income by the elderly. The health shocks we study are the occurrence of new major conditions such as cancer, heart problems, and minor conditions (e.g. diabetes, and hypertension). Our empirical strategy exploits unanticipated changes in health status through the diagnosis of new health conditions, combined with an individual fixed effect framework. We find that major shocks have large and persistent effects while minor shocks have small and mainly …

Academic Libraries And Toxic Leadership, Alma C. Ortega Jan 2019

Academic Libraries And Toxic Leadership, Alma C. Ortega

Dissertations

Toxic leadership has yet to be officially recognized as an area of inquiry in the field of library and information studies. Indeed, the literature on academic libraries is only now beginning to address the topic. None of this should be surprising because leadership, in general, continues to be an under-discussed topic in the library and information studies literature.

The topic of leadership, of course, is the central theoretical construct of the leadership studies field, and, in this field, toxic leadership has been systematically studied and discussed. This literature reveals the negative consequences of having a toxic leader as the head …

Thermal Block Of Action Potentials Is Primarily Due To Voltage-Dependent Potassium Currents: A Modeling Study, Michael W. Jenkins, Hillel J. Chiel

Faculty Scholarship

Objective. Thermal block of action potential conduction using infrared lasers is a new modality for manipulating neural activity. It could be used for analysis of the nervous system and for therapeutic applications. We sought to understand the mechanisms of thermal block. Approach. To analyze the mechanisms of thermal block, we studied both the original Hodgkin/Huxley model, and a version modified to more accurately match experimental data on thermal responses in the squid giant axon. Main results. Both the original and modified models suggested that thermal block, especially at higher temperatures, is primarily due to a depolarization-activated hyperpolarization as increased temperature …

Soft-Surface Grasping: Radular Opening In Aplysia Californica, Catherine E. Kehl, Joey Wu, Sisi Lu, Richard F. Drushel, Rebekah K. Smoldt, Hillel J. Chiel

Faculty Scholarship

Grasping soft, irregular material is challenging both for animals and robots. The feeding systems of many animals have adapted to this challenge. In particular, the feeding system of the marine mollusk Aplysia californica, a generalist herbivore, allows it to grasp and ingest seaweeds of varying shape, texture and toughness. On the surface of the grasper of A. californica is a structure known as the radula, a thin flexible cartilaginous sheet with fine teeth. Previous in vitro studies suggested that intrinsic muscles, I7, are responsible for opening the radula. Lesioning I7 in vivo does not prevent animals from grasping and ingesting …

This conceptual framework examines the process of promoting more inclusive social dynamics in mixed-income communities. Each slide depicts two possible pathways: an inclusionary pathway on top and an exclusionary pathway below. These pathways are not mutually exclusive and are often both at play. The slides provide increasing levels of detail about the pathways. Though represented for simplicity as a linear process, in reality the process is likely more cyclical.

A Gene Based Approach To Test Genetic Association Based On An Optimally Weighted Combination Of Multiple Traits., Jianjun Zhang, Qiuying Sha, Guanfu Liu, Xuexia Wang Jan 2019

A Gene Based Approach To Test Genetic Association Based On An Optimally Weighted Combination Of Multiple Traits., Jianjun Zhang, Qiuying Sha, Guanfu Liu, Xuexia Wang

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

There is increasing evidence showing that pleiotropy is a widespread phenomenon in complex diseases for which multiple correlated traits are often measured. Joint analysis of multiple traits could increase statistical power by aggregating multiple weak effects. Existing methods for multiple trait association tests usually study each of the multiple traits separately and then combine the univariate test statistics or combine p-values of the univariate tests for identifying disease associated genetic variants. However, ignoring correlation between phenotypes may cause power loss. Additionally, the genetic variants in one gene (including common and rare variants) are often viewed as a whole that affects …

Range Of Motion Changes In Female Elite Swimmers Throughout A Competitive Season, Mccall E. Christian, Lindsey E. Eberman

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Upper extremity injuries are the most common injury in swimming athletes specifically in the collegiate setting. Females in particular, are more likely to suffer these injuries when comparing to male collegiate swimmers. “Swimmer Shoulder”, a generic term for overuse shoulder injuries in the swimming population occurs with high rate and intensity of training. Significant factors that have been found to contribute to this pathology are deficits in internal rotation, lack of stability, and increased demands on the shoulder. The aim for this clinical outcomes project was to evaluate changes in range of motion (ROM) total arc of the shoulder, and …

Current clinical practice recommendations for rehabilitation of hamstring injuries are based on pathoanatomical muscle tissue healing timeframes. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of modulating the nervous system with Primal Reflex Release Technique (PRRT) in patients clinically diagnosed with functional neuromuscular hamstring muscle-related disorder (FNHD). In this a priori case series, PRRT was utilized in four patients participating in intercollegiate, National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II, athletics to evaluate Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NRS) for current pain, Disablement of the Physically …

Regionally Interdependent Applications Of Total Motion Release® And Active Rotational Shoulder Range Of Motion In Overhead Athletes, R. Ross Dexter, Terylan K. Loftis, Russell T. Baker, Timothy E. Speicher Jan 2019

Regionally Interdependent Applications Of Total Motion Release® And Active Rotational Shoulder Range Of Motion In Overhead Athletes, R. Ross Dexter, Terylan K. Loftis, Russell T. Baker, Timothy E. Speicher

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Healthy athletes commonly engage in pre-participation warm-up strategies designed to physiologically and mechanically prepare the body for training and competition. Alterations in rotational range of motion (ROM) of the dominant shoulder in overhead athletes, resulting in total rotation ROM loss, correlate with performance deficit, injury risk, and lost training time. Researchers have suggested that interventions using Total Motion Release® (TMR®) increase shoulder ROM more effectively than traditional warm-up methods. A randomized pre-test post-test trial was used to explore the effects of a regionally interdependent application of TMR® via a forward flexed trunk twist (FFTT) and seated straight leg raise (SLR) …

Improving Compassion Measurement In The Workforce By Analyzing Users’ Mouse-Cursor Movements, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Haley Kirk, Joseph S. Valacich

Faculty Publications

Compassion is often an important characteristic of effective employees in the workplace. To measure improvements in employee compassion, identify shortcomings, and even screen applicants, researchers and practitioners have sought reliable measures of compassion. Measuring compassion, however, can be very difficult because people are hesitant reporting a lack of compassion, due to their desire to be viewed favorably by others. We draw on the domain of human-computer interaction to help address this issue. Namely, we propose a theoretically-grounded methodology for helping differentiate between high and low compassion by monitoring users’ mouse-cursor movements in specialized online surveys. We find that people with …
