Can We Deliver Effective Alcohol-Related Brief Advice In General Dental Practice?, A. Plessas, M. Nasser
More Faculty of Health Research
Design Two-arm cluster randomised controlled feasibility trial. Intervention Twelve NHS dental practices were randomised to the intervention and control arms. Patients consuming alcohol above the recommended levels were eligible to participate in the trial. The intervention was delivered by the dentists in the participating practices and entailed the delivery of a short tailored alcohol-related advice tool and a leaflet, which included information about the effects of alcohol on oral health and the benefits of reducing alcohol intake to both oral and general health. Patients in the control arm were given a mouth cancer prevention leaflet only. The level of alcohol …

The Uk Government Internet Safety Strategy – Time To Listen To The Youth Voice?, Ad Phippen
The Uk Government Internet Safety Strategy – Time To Listen To The Youth Voice?, Ad Phippen
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
The policy space around “online safety” has been active in the last 18 months, with development from manifesto commitment through green paper to proposed white paper. The goal is developing a legislative and regulative programme that will, it is proposed, ensure that UK citizens are “safe” when they go online. With the proposed white paper anticipated in Autumn 2018, it is worthwhile to pause and reflect on the policy direction, drawing from both empirical and personal perspectives on working with children and young people, and what it means to be a young person growing up in this “digital age”. By …

Methods Of Usability Testing In The Development Of Ehealth Applications: A Scoping Review, Inocencio Maramba, Arunangsu Chatterjee, Craig Newman
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Background The number of eHealth applications has exponentially increased in recent years, with over 325,000 health apps now available on all major app stores. This is in addition to other eHealth applications available on other platforms such as PC software, web sites and even gaming consoles. As with other digital applications, usability is one of the key factors in the successful implementation of eHealth apps. Reviews of the literature on empirical methods of usability testing in eHealth were last published in 2015. In the context of an exponentially increasing rate of App development year on year, an updated review is …

OBJECTIVES: To explore family-centred care practices in Italian neonatal intensive care units and describe areas for improvement. METHODS: A cross-sectional, multicentre, survey was conducted using the Italian language version of "Advancing family-centred new-born intensive care: a self-assessment inventory". The instrument is divided into 10 sections rating the status of family-centred care (1 = not at all, 5 = very well) and ranking the perceived priority for change/improvement (1 = low, 3 = high). A representative group of staff and parent for each unit were invited to complete the survey. Data was collected between January and June 2015. Correlations among unit …

© 2019 Elsevier B.V. Shallow coral reefs provide food, income, well-being and coastal protection to countries around the Indian Ocean and Asia. These reefs are under threat due to many anthropogenic stressors including pollution, sedimentation, overfishing, sea surface warming and habitat destruction. Ocean acidification interacts with these factors to exacerbate stress on coral reefs. Effective solutions in tackling the impact of ocean acidification require a thorough understanding of the current adaptive capacity of each nation to deal with the consequences. Here, we aim to help the decision-making process for policy makers in dealing with these future challenges at the regional …

Coexistence And The Niche In A Nurse-Cactus Interaction: Is Cyclic Dynamics Justified?, Arnoldo Flores-Torres, Carlos Montaña, Miguel Franco
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
1. The interaction between the nurse plant Larrea tridentata and the cacti Cylindropuntia leptocaulis is thought to follow cyclical-replacement dynamics. However, the required changing nature of their interaction, from facilitation to competition, has not been investigated through their full life cycle. 2. In order to test the hypothesised cyclical dynamics, we compared the demography of four sub-populations (LA = Larrea associated to Cylindropuntia; CA = Cylindropuntia associated to Larrea, LS = solitary Larrea; CS = solitary Cylindropuntia) in the Mapimí Biosphere Reserve, Mexico, over the period 2008-2015. This allowed us to compare their demography at varying levels of the generally …

School of Health Professions
BackgroundA new pre-triage emergency medical call screening tool, Nature of Call (NoC), has been introduced into UK ambulance services which employ the NHS Pathways (NHSP) triage system. Its current function is to provide a rapid sieve, differentiating between patients who may need treatment for Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA), and therefore require immediate ambulance dispatch, and all other calls, for which ambulance dispatch is withheld whilst further triage is undertaken.ObjectiveTo evaluate the accuracy of NoC in identifying patients with potentially treatable OHCA or peri-arrest conditions.MethodsStudy of diagnostic accuracy. The sample was a retrospective cohort of consecutive calls to a UK ambulance …

School of Health Professions
BackgroundThe NHS Pathways (NHSP) medical call triage system is employed by UK ambulance services. One function is to identify a broad category of ‘high-acuity calls’, distinguishing them from those that do not require an emergency response. A new pre-triage screening tool, Nature of Call (NoC), designed to augment NHSP could be employed as a rapid initial sieve of broad acuity.ObjectivesTo identify the accuracy of NHSP (and NoC) in recognising patients who require an emergency ambulance response (and therefore those who may not).MethodsDiagnostic accuracy. The sample is a retrospective cohort of consecutive calls, over a 4 month period, to a UK …
