Generative Ai For Medical Data Augmentation: A Two-Dimensional Review Of Techniques, Modalities, And Governance Challenges, Eman Sayed, Sara M. Mosaad
Sustainable Machine Intelligence Journal
Generative Artificial Intelligence has emerged as a transformative tool in healthcare by addressing persistent limitations in medical data availability, including annotation scarcity, privacy restrictions, and demographic underrepresentation. Instead of relying solely on real-world samples, generative models synthesize clinically realistic data that support model robustness, simulate rare conditions, and improve representation across patient groups. This review presents a comprehensive synthesis of four widely adopted generative model classes: Generative Adversarial Networks, Variational Autoencoders, Diffusion Models, and Transformer-based architectures. These models are examined across four key clinical data categories, including radiological imaging, structured electronic health records, physiological time series, and free-text clinical narratives. …

According to the World Health Organization, 37 million falls occur every year which leads to sever injuries that require medical intervention. In addition, more than 600,000 people end up dying due to falls making them the second cause of accidental injury fatalities worldwide. Specifically, the elderly are more prone to fatal falls. Therefore, fall detection systems are needed to allow medical professionals to intervene in such cases. Various wearable and non-contact fall detection devices have been developed recently. Since non-contact Wi-Fi-based methods are widely available and non-intrusive, they are gaining popularity. In this paper, we propose a state-of-the-art fall detection …

Diet is just one social determinant of health, with obesity and diet-related illness as leading causes of premature deaths and disability in the UK. People living in deprived areas of the UK are more likely to experience poor health outcomes, linked to many social determinants of health such as diet, housing, employment, education, power and discrimination and psycho-social factors such as isolation, quality of social network and perceived level of control. While socio-economic deprivation is a key risk for health inequalities, protected characteristics, vulnerable groups and geographical factors also indicate populations at risk of experiencing health inequalities. In this ‘opinion …

BACKGROUND: Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is an epithelial fragility disease primarily affecting the skin and is caused by variants in the COL7A1 gene. Individuals with RDEB are predisposed to develop highly aggressive cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) which are the most common cause of premature death. There is a lack of effective prevention or treatment options for patients with RDEB-SCC.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the antitumour activity and safety of the polo-like kinase-1 (PLK1) inhibitor, rigosertib, two investigator-initiated open-label, single-arm phase II studies were opened in Europe and the USA and enrolled five patients with RDEB diagnosed with locally advanced …

Edible insects are nutritious, having high levels of protein, essential amino acids, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. In areas where sorghum is a primary crop, mixing this gluten-free grain with protein-rich insect powder provides a novel approach to making nutrient-rich products. Understanding the sorghum and mopane worm flours' metabolomic changes during bioprocessing can however, enhance their nutritional value and food safety. The research investigated metabolite compounds that are found in raw and processed (fermented, malted (sorghum), and ultrasonicated) mopane worms and sorghum. In the study, sorghum grains were traditionally fermented and malted at 35°C for 48 h and ultrasonicated for …

Compound precipitation-wind extremes (CPWEs) pose significant socio-economic challenges in urban areas, with the most severe impacts often felt by vulnerable populations. While CPWE studies have often focused on large-scale assessments, localised urban contexts, at a scale of a city and its suburban surroundings, remain understudied, particularly in terms of how CPWEs might differentially impact different socio-economic communities. This study aims to advance understanding of how CPWEs interact with social vulnerability at a localised scale, using the San Francisco Bay Area (SFBA)—a global hotspot for CPWEs with diverse climates, physiography, and socio-economic factors—as a test case. Daily precipitation and wind speed …

Understanding the atomistic basis of multi-layer mechanisms employed by broadly reactive neutralizing antibodies of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein without directly blocking receptor engagement remains an important challenge in coronavirus immunology. Class 4 antibodies represent an intriguing case: they target a deeply conserved, cryptic epitope on the receptor-binding domain yet exhibit variable neutralization potency across subgroups F1 (CR3022, EY6A, COVA1-16), F2 (DH1047), and F3 (S2X259). The molecular basis for this variability is not fully understood. Here, we employed a multi-modal computational approach integrating atomistic and coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, binding free energy calculations, mutational scanning, and dynamic network analysis to elucidate …

Florida Tax Review
The 2017 law known as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) enacted a tax on private, non-profit college and university endowments for the first time. Institutions with at least 500 tuition-paying students and endowments of $500,000 or greater per student now have to pay a 1.4% tax on their endowments. But like all taxpayers, colleges and universities may be tax averse or seek reductions in their tax burdens. That is, colleges and universities may try to avoid the tax through taking action to ensure they do not meet the threshold. Such actions include increasing the size of their student …

Capitalizing Carbon: The Taxation Of Carbon Credits In Voluntary Carbon Markets, Levi Loveless
Florida Tax Review
This Article explores the evolving intersection of carbon offset credits, U.S. federal tax law and clean energy tax incentives, emphasizing the complexities faced by businesses in navigating these areas. As carbon offset credits gain prominence in corporate sustainability strategies, their tax treatment remains ambiguous, with companies encountering varying interpretations under sections 162 and 263.
The analysis in Part II suggests that carbon offset credit purchases are likely to be generally capitalized, subject to rare exceptions. This conclusion is drawn from notable legal precedents, including Welch v. Helvering, Jenkins v. Commissioner and INDOPCO v. Commissioner. These cases provide insight …

A Delicate Balance: Antibiotic Allergy, Renal Infection, And Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Aun Ali Bangash, Muhammad Ali Bangash, Ruben Meza Martinez
Research Colloquium
Introduction: Acute pyelonephritis is a bacterial infection of the renal parenchyma and is most commonly caused by Escherichia coli. It presents with systemic and genitourinary symptoms such as fever, flank pain, and urinary abnormalities, which include increased urinary frequency and burning sensation upon urination. Timely antibiotic therapy is necessary to avoid complications like renal abscesses or urosepsis. Empiric treatment often involves third-generation cephalosporins such as ceftriaxone because of their efficacy and renal penetration. However, in patients allergic to ceftriaxone, an allergy seen in approximately 1–2% of cases, alternative regimens need to be brought into the picture. Levofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone, is …

Background: Marker-less motion capture systems have improved the assessment of human movement by allowing for a non-invasive, affordable, quantitative data collection useful in clinical settings. However, their use in real-world community care settings is largely underexplored, presenting a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between controlled laboratory environments and the complexity of providing care in diverse, everyday contexts. This systematic review examines the differential use of MMC systems across real-world indoor environments (clinics, homes, living labs) and outdoor settings (public walkways, community spaces), with a focus on their application to neurological disorders such as stroke and neurodegenerative diseases.
