Floor Of Mouth Thyroglossal Duct Cyst: A Rare Embryologic Course., John Kerr, Weston L Niermeyer, Peter B Baker, Tendy Chiang

Surgery Articles

A thyroglossal duct cyst (TGDC) is a common pediatric midline neck mass. Most TGDCs occur in the region of the hyoid bone but have been found less commonly in areas from the oral cavity to the sternum. We present the first reported case of a multifocal floor of mouth (FOM)/cervical TGDC representing an atypical embryonic course. We also review atypical presentations of TGDC and provide a summary of cases involving FOM and multifocal cysts.

Faculty Research 2019

The 16S rRNA gene has been a mainstay of sequence-based bacterial analysis for decades. However, high-throughput sequencing of the full gene has only recently become a realistic prospect. Here, we use in silico and sequence-based experiments to critically re-evaluate the potential of the 16S gene to provide taxonomic resolution at species and strain level. We demonstrate that targeting of 16S variable regions with short-read sequencing platforms cannot achieve the taxonomic resolution afforded by sequencing the entire (~1500 bp) gene. We further demonstrate that full-length sequencing platforms are sufficiently accurate to resolve subtle nucleotide substitutions (but not insertions/deletions) that exist between …

A Correlational Study: Understanding The Relationship Between Leadership And Morale Within Law Enforcement Agencies, Michael C. Minto Nov 2019

A Correlational Study: Understanding The Relationship Between Leadership And Morale Within Law Enforcement Agencies, Michael C. Minto

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

Law enforcement agencies employ officers who are driven to serving and protecting their communities. However, officers are not only tasked with serving and protecting, but also with dealing with issues of low morale within their law enforcement agencies. The issue of low morale resulting in high turnover rates, and issues with law enforcement agencies struggling with retention rates, is not new, nor is the issue of low morale within law enforcement agencies. This study emphasizes the relationship between leadership and morale, rather than the common factors of stress, pay, benefits, and hours. The study explored 3 factors among law enforcement …

Phytoplankton Community And Algal Toxicity At A Recurring Bloom In Sullivan Bay, Kabetogama Lake, Minnesota, Usa, Victoria G. Christensen, Ryan P. Maki, Erin A. Stelzer, Jack E. Norlan, Eakalak Khan Nov 2019

Phytoplankton Community And Algal Toxicity At A Recurring Bloom In Sullivan Bay, Kabetogama Lake, Minnesota, Usa, Victoria G. Christensen, Ryan P. Maki, Erin A. Stelzer, Jack E. Norlan, Eakalak Khan

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

Kabetogama Lake in Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota, USA suffers from recurring late summer algal blooms that often contain toxin-producing cyanobacteria. Previous research identified the toxin microcystin in blooms, but we wanted to better understand how the algal and cyanobacterial community changed throughout an open water season and how changes in community structure were related to toxin production. Therefore, we sampled one recurring bloom location throughout the entire open water season. The uniqueness of this study is the absence of urban and agricultural nutrient sources, the remote location, and the collection of samples before any visible blooms were present. Through quantitative …

Three Dimensional Object Detection Approaches For Indoor Navigation Aid, Junxiu Zhou Nov 2019

Three Dimensional Object Detection Approaches For Indoor Navigation Aid, Junxiu Zhou

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation aims to develop object detection approaches for an indoor navigation aid called smart cane. The goal of the object detection approaches is to provide object-level information of the environment to assist the visually impaired people to walk freely in the indoor environment. Although many object detection approaches have been proposed, object detection is still a challenging problem due to a large number of object categories, viewpoint changes, occlusions, cluttered backgrounds, etc. To address these challenges, first, an indoor 3D dataset is collected by using the smart cane navigation aid. Second, indoor objects are broadly divided into two types: …

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

Let me first of all take this opportunity to address the young men and women who are present here. I would like to repeat what I have said on many occasions in the past and won’t hesitate repeating this in the future unless it gets hammered in. Please do not shortchange yourselves by chasing degrees, certificates and grades , by memorizing selective material that is likely to be included in question papers and then spit it out at the examinations and then forget about it. You would repent it throughout your adult life if you do not pay heed to …

Adolescents Information Behaviour Of Substance Use Risks In Nigeria, Ruth Owolabi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstract

Adolescence is a transitory period in every human developmental process. The adolescent age is characterized by changes in the world view as such are exposed to making experiments. This could be as a result of peer influence that leads to a delinquent act of substance use. Substance use among adolescents in Nigeria is increasing at an alarming rate with risks on health which has become a global issue of concern. Despite the efforts by government and non-government agencies to create awareness on the risks of substance use there still exists evidence of its widespread in all the geographical areas …

N-Of-1 Trials As A Decision Support Tool In Clinical Practice: A Protocol For A Systematic Literature Review And Narrative Synthesis, Joyce Samuel, Travis Holder, Donald Molony

Library Staff Publications

The n-of-1 trial can utilized in clinical practice as a decision support tool, which may improve patient outcomes by providing both the patient and the clinician with objective evidence to inform personalized treatment decisions. As its use broadens, it will be important to study whether the added time and effort of an n-of-1 trial results in measurable improvements in important patient outcomes compared to usual clinical practice. Parallel-group randomized clinical trials testing the n-of-1 approach versus usual care have been undertaken in a number of medical settings. A systematic review will be performed according to PRISMA guidelines, using MEDLINE, Embase, …

Exploring The Relationship Between Geriatric Patients And Their Carers Through Portraiture: Giving, Receiving, Observing & Witnessing Care (Growing Care), Mark A. Gilbert, Regina Idoate, Kenneth Rockwood

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

The process of creating a portrait relies on a series of intimate interactions. Portraits, even those that depict a single individual, are a visual testament to a relationship. Portrait sitters are required to engage with artists in the creation of their personal visual narrative. As viewers of a portrait, we are invited to actively participate in other’s stories, to observe, to question, even stare. This process is integral to the portraits evolving meaning. Giving, receiving, observing & witnessing care (GROWing Care), the case study presented in this manuscript, draws on these multiple exchanges to explore the experience of dementia and …
