Distractions In Hearing: Measuring Impulsivity In Service Members With Mtbi, Kathleen Burns
Distractions In Hearing: Measuring Impulsivity In Service Members With Mtbi, Kathleen Burns
Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
Service Members who have experienced mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) tend to experience a degradation of focus and attention capabilities. The purpose of this initial pilot study is to measure the false alarm rates and thresholds of Service Members with mTBI during contralateral and informational masking tests and compare their outcomes to adults without mTBI. Contralateral and informational masking tasks both involve different levels of uncertainty and different forms of central masking. These two tasks will be used to quantify the participants’ accuracy in identifying the target stimulus and their associated levels of distractibility and impulsivity. Preliminary data obtained from …

Development Of A Questionnaire To Assess Attitudes Toward Hearing Aids, Corinne O'Shaughnessy, Ayasakanta Rout, Joseph Smaldino
Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
Many reasons have been postulated as to why persons with hearing loss are reluctant to engage in the hearing rehabilitation process. While not the only determinant, an individual’s attitudes toward hearing loss and hearing aids have been shown to affect adoption of amplification adversely and eventual outcomes of hearing aid use. Several attempts have been made to develop test instruments for attitudes toward hearing loss, but nothing specific to attitudes toward hearing aids or hearing aid technology. The primary objective of this study was to develop a questionnaire to assess attitudes toward hearing aids using the ABC model of attitude …

Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
Due to the need for an occupation-focused intervention for childhood cancer survivors, we will be conducting a five week group occupation-based program to explore its impact on self-concept and self-esteem in childhood cancer survivors through occupational exploration and participation. The purpose of our study is to determine the efficacy of a group occupation-based intervention on enhancing areas of psychological well-being such as self-esteem and self-concept in childhood cancer survivors in order to support their transition from childhood to adolescence. Each week we will guide the participants through various activities with creative and self-expressive components such as poetry writing, creative movement, …
The Effect Of Parent-Infant Swim Classes On Maternal Parenting Competence, Emotional Availability, And Aquatic Handling, Hope Sadowski, Chanele Molano
The Effect Of Parent-Infant Swim Classes On Maternal Parenting Competence, Emotional Availability, And Aquatic Handling, Hope Sadowski, Chanele Molano
Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
Low parenting competence and limited emotional availability decrease the quality of the parent-infant relationship (Young, 2011; Sturge-Apple et al., 2012). However, co-occupations, or reciprocal relationships where the occupations of two or more individuals are interactively shaping each other, have been associated with strengthening parent-infant relationships (Pierce, 2009; Price & Stephenson, 2009). Parent-infant swim classes are co-occupation based interventions that facilitate close bodily contact and teach parents handling skills that can generalize into the home. Numerous websites allude to the benefits of these classes; however, there are currently no evidence-based claims supported by the occupational therapy literature. The researchers hypothesized that …
Ethics And Equity In Nonprofits, Jennifer K. Morgan
Ethics And Equity In Nonprofits, Jennifer K. Morgan
Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
When considering modes of delivery of public services, traditionally people depend on the government to supply these goods and services. Citizens believe in the social contract and that it is the duty of the government to deliver services to the public. However, beginning in the 1970s, the traditional form of public goods delivery moved away from strictly government distribution, towards market delivery in hopes of greater responsiveness and ability to deliver at a lower cost. However, can nonprofits deliver goods and services once provided by the government with the same equity standards as the government? When examining the literature on …

Performance Impairment Following Sleep Restriction - Is Caffeine The Antidote?, Erin E. Horil
Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
The purpose of this project was to test the hypothesis that caffeine supplementation can lessen the negative effects that sleep restriction (i.e. shortened sleep duration) has on next day performance. Recent work done in our lab showed that sleep restriction has a negative effect on 3-km cycling time trial performance. Thus, it is important to investigate potential ways to lessen the negative effects sleep restriction may have on performance, since it is commonly seen in athletes. In this study, participants completed a battery of performance testing and then a heavy exercise session. This was followed by either a full night …

A Home For The Spirit: Mental Health Care Delivery And The Homeless, John D. Rogers
Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
I propose to present a poster summarizing a needs analysis for delivery of mental health care services to homeless people in small cities. The poster will provide highlights of a review of the relevant literature, best practice from current shelters, a summary of needs, a proposed model agency.
Homelessness is a significant and persistent issue in the United States and around the world. With public policy support, integrated care modalities, and new conceptualizations of treatment, those without homes can find help for mental health issues, and those in the helping profession can find rewarding opportunities to contribute to improved prognosis …
Performance Of High-Volume Fly Ash Self-Compacting Concrete Exposed To External Sulfate Attack, Tareq S. Al-Attar Dr., A. A. Taha
Performance Of High-Volume Fly Ash Self-Compacting Concrete Exposed To External Sulfate Attack, Tareq S. Al-Attar Dr., A. A. Taha
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
The high-volume fly ash concrete, HVFAC, could be defined as any concrete mix having fly ash content larger than 50 percent of the total cementitious materials content. Due to the availability of fly ash in large quantities globally with low cost, HVFAC could be considered as a solution for the environmental impact of Portland cements. In this study the durability of two high-volume fly ash self-compacting concrete, HVFASCC, mixes exposed to the effects of two sulfate aggressive solutions was investigated. The fly ash, class F, contents for these mixes were 50 and 60 percent by weight of Portland cement. The …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 1265-1279, 2019. The purpose of this study was to determine sex differences in the contribution of sensory nerves to rapid cutaneous thermal hyperemia. Healthy young females (n = 15, tested during both the early follicular (EF) and the mid-luteal (ML) phase of the menstrual cycle) and males (n = 15) had a 4 cm2 area of skin on one forearm and one leg treated with a eutectic mixture of local anesthetic (EMLA). EMLA sites, along with corresponding control sites, were instrumented with laser Doppler flowmetry probes and local skin heaters. Baseline (33 …
Toxic Tropics: Purity And Danger In Everywhere In Everyday Life, Liza Grandia
Toxic Tropics: Purity And Danger In Everywhere In Everyday Life, Liza Grandia
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
In contrast to popular images of the tropics as verdant Edens, forest dwellers face various pollutants with little-understood environmental health impacts. Drawing upon long-term ethnographic research in northern Guatemala through the lens of Mary Douglas' work on purity, danger, and culture, this paper describes how the inventive re-use of modern waste exposes rural people to new and unknown toxic substances from “matter out of place.” While environmental justice literature has emphasized industrial, extractive, and military disasters, this note draws attention to the less dramatic yet lethal pollutants encountered in the everyday lives of the rural poor through “chemical trespass.”

Validation Of Practical Tools To Identify Walking Cadence To Reach Moderate Intensity, Spencer F.C. Smith, Matthew A. Short, Martin Sénéchal, Danielle R. Bouchard
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(4): 1244-1253, 2019. It is recommended that adults get at minimum 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in bouts of 10 minutes or greaterevery week. Walking cadence (steps per minute) is one easy way to estimate intensity required, however tools that claim to quantify walking intensity via walking cadence have not been validated in adults. We aimed to validate: 1- the accuracy of walking cadence measurement by the Piezo RxD pedometer, Polar Stride Sensor Bluetooth Smart foot pod, and Garmin Ant+ foot pod at different speeds and slopes and 2- the ability of the Piezo …

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Work has recently started in fib (Fédération Internationale du Béton) on the preparation of a new fib Model Code for Concrete Structures, under the working title of Model Code 2020 (MC2020). This will be a single code dealing with both new and existing concrete structures, that is both the design of new structures and all the activities associated with the assessment, interventions and the through-life management and care of existing concrete structures. Numerous goals relating to durability and service life design have been identified, including that ideally MC2020 should incorporate:
• Better models for deterioration processes addressing issues such as …

Workability And Freeze-Thawing Performance Of Fiber Reinforced Expansive Self-Consolidating Concrete, Qi Cao, Qq Gao
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
The aim of this study is to investigate the workability and freeze-thawing performance of fiber reinforced expansive self-consolidating concrete (ESCC). Fibers and expansive agent were used to decrease shrinkage, control cracks and enhance microstructure of the concrete. Steel fibers with three volume fractions (0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75%) of the total volume of concrete and monofilament polypropylene fibers with two volume fractions (0.05%, 0.10%) were used in the test. The freeze-thawing performance was determined by rapid freezing and thawing test. Results indicated that polypropylene fiber shows more sensitivity on slump flow than steel fiber but less impact on T500. The relative dynamic …

Therapeutic Administration Of Tregitope-Human Albumin Fusion With Insulin Peptides To Promote Antigen-Specific Adaptive Tolerance Induction., Anne S De Groot, Gail Skowron, James Robert White, Christine Boyle, Guilhem Richard, David V. Serreze, William D Martin
Faculty Research 2019
Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that is associated with effector T cell (Teff) destruction of insulin-producing pancreatic beta-islet cells. Among the therapies being evaluated for T1D is the restoration of regulatory T cell (Treg) activity, specifically directed toward down-modulation of beta-islet antigen-specific T effector cells. This is also known as antigen-specific adaptive tolerance induction for T1D (T1D ASATI). Tregitopes (T regulatory cell epitopes) are natural T cell epitopes derived from immunoglobulin G (IgG) that were identified in 2008 and have been evaluated in several autoimmune disease models. In the T1D ASATI studies presented here, Tregitope peptides were …
