The Safe Vehicles Rule: How The Trump Administration's Course Change On Vehicle Emissions Reflects A Larger Policy Shift Away From Environmentally Friendly Regulations, Meghan Claiborne

Emory Business Law Review

In his first two years as President, Donald J. Trump has focused on a systematic dismantling of the American regulatory framework, with environmental regulations coming under particularly fierce attack. This Essay reviews the President's recent withdrawal and replacement of fuel emissions regulations, and how this decision represents a more general adoption by the Trump Administration of the antiquated notion that economic prosperity and environmental regulation cannot exist harmoniously in modern society.

Not A Bank, Not A Sifi; Still Too Big To Fail, Oscar Couwenberg, Stephen J. Lubben Jan 2019

Not A Bank, Not A Sifi; Still Too Big To Fail, Oscar Couwenberg, Stephen J. Lubben

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

This outstanding Article by Professors Oscar Couwenberg and Stephen J. Lubben explores the financial collapse of too big to fail non-bank firms. The Article analyzes the level of government involvement in various large insolvencies around the world, placing each case into one of four categories: standard bankruptcies, bankruptcies with government support, ad hoc solutions, and full bailouts. After considering the benefits of each approach, this Article concludes that either a standard bankruptcy procedure or a bankruptcy procedure with government support is preferable to an ad hoc solution or a full bailout. The authors artfully balance the moral hazard associated with …

Third-Party Relief For Municipal Debtors: 'Necessity' In The Chapter 9 Context, Christian Morbidelli Jan 2019

Third-Party Relief For Municipal Debtors: 'Necessity' In The Chapter 9 Context, Christian Morbidelli

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

Bankruptcy courts have often used 'third-party releases' in the chapter 11 context to release certain non-debtors from liabilities. As chapter 9 municipal bankruptcies have become more numerous, debtors have sought third-party relief there as well. The author categorizes these chapter 9 cases into two categories. The first involves cases where the State provides funds to the reorganization effort in exchange for some creditors giving up claims against the State. The second consists of cases where a city attempts to relieve its police officers of liability for civil rights violations by including injunctions against the civil rights plaintiffs in the city's …

A Fly In The Ointment: Promesa's Drafting Error In Section 314(B)(7), Christine J. Joh

Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal

When Congress amended the Bankruptcy Code in 1984, Congress precluded Puerto Rico from seeking bankruptcy relief under chapter 9. The author explores the history of this exclusion, the case Puerto Rico v. Franklin California Tax-Free Trust, and § 314(b)(7) of the Puerto Rico Oversight Management and Economic Stability Act. The author then concludes that § 314(b)(7) should be removed to resolve the dysfunction it creates.

Ethics Of Care, Emotional Work, And Collective Action Of Solidarity: The Patronas In Mexico, Verónica Montes, María Dolores Paris Pombo

Sociology Faculty Research and Scholarship

In this paper, we examine the mobilization of the Patronas, a group of Mexican women who have fed thousands of Central American migrants over the past two decades. We argue that the Patronas’ work of feeding and caring for migrants goes beyond essentializing these women’s work as just housewives, mothers, and caregivers. Furthermore, we assert that through these care activities, the Patronas exert a feminist ethic of care that is understood as a set of practices based on trust, reciprocity, and solidarity. The Patronas’ praxis of caring for the migrants resonates with people and attracts hundreds of volunteers to join …

Discrete And Looking (To Profit): Homoconnectivity On Grindr, Chase Aunspach Jan 2019

Discrete And Looking (To Profit): Homoconnectivity On Grindr, Chase Aunspach

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

The queer dating and hookup app Grindr evidences a technological and economic intensification in queer spaces online. The dominant modality of capitalist power is no longer consumerist norms but the collection and analysis of data. Grindr’s participation in datafication distributes increased risks upon its queer users and necessitates a renewed politics of queer privacy beyond homonormativity. I name this arrangement of power homoconnectivity and detail four techniques that capitalism deploys to capture and monetize queer social production. Ultimately, this article unpacks how Grindr designs experiences that move users to log into the app while hiding its engagement with multi-sided markets. …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV; genus Tritimovirus; family Potyviridae) is an economically important wheat virus that is transmitted by the wheat curl mite (WCM; Aceria tosichella Keifer) in a persistent manner. Virus–vector coevolution may potentially influence vector gene expression to prolong viral association and thus increase virus transmission efficiency and spread. To understand the transcriptomic responses of WCM to WSMV, RNA sequencing was performed to assemble and analyse transcriptomes of WSMV viruliferous and aviruliferous mites. Among 7291 de novo-assembled unigenes, 1020 were differentially expressed between viruliferous and aviruliferous WCMs using edgeR at a false discovery rate ≤0.05. …

Soil Arthropod Abundance And Diversity Following Land Application Of Swine Slurry, Nichole R. Schuster, Julie A. Peterson, John E. Gilley, Linda R. Schott, Amy M. Schmidt

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Soil arthropods play an important role in nutrient cycling and maintenance of soil structure, and their abundance and diversity provide an indication of the biological quality of soil. Land application of livestock manure provides crop nutrients and may also impact the soil arthropod community. This study was conducted to quantify soil arthropod abundance and diversity for a pe-riod of one year following swine manure application via broadcast or injec-tion. Arthropods were extracted from plot soil samples using Berlese funnels, identified and counted, and the QBS index (Qualità Biologica del Suolo) was calculated for each soil sample. Collembola (Hypogastruridae and Isotomi-dae) …

Finke, Thomas Hunt, Janet J. Knodel, Christian H. Krupke, Brian P. Mccornack, Andrew P. Michel, Christopher R. Philips, Adam J. Varenhorst, Robert J. Wright, Robert Koch

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Stink bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) are an increasing threat to soybean (Fabales: Fabaceae) production in the North Central Region of the United States, which accounts for 80% of the country’s total soybean production. Characterization of the stink bug community is essential for development of management programs for these pests. However, the composition of the stink bug community in the region is not well defined. This study aimed to address this gap with a 2-yr, 9-state survey. Specifically, we characterized the relative abundance, richness, and diversity of taxa in this community, and assessed phenological differences in abundance of herbivorous and predatory stink …

Wheat Stem Maggot (Diptera: Chloropidae): An Emerging Pest Of Cover Crop To Corn Transition Systems, Gabriela Inveninato Carmona, Jennifer M. Rees, Ronald C. Seymour, Robert J. Wright, Anthony J. Mcmechan

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The wheat stem maggot (Meromyza americana Fitch) (WSM) is a minor pest of wheat, rye, and other grasses. In 2017, growers in Nebraska reported dead center whorls and excessive tillering in early-season cornfields that followed wheat or rye terminated after planting corn. A survey was conducted to evaluate the risk factors for this insect in cover crop to corn transition systems. In each field, management practices and the percentage of injured plants were recorded. Symptomatic corn plants were collected from each field and dissected to determine larval and plant characteristics. In a few cases, small patches of a field …

Accumulating evidence points to an important role for the gut microbiome in anti-tumor immunity. Here, we show that altered intestinal microbiota contributes to anti-tumor immunity, limiting tumor expansion. Mice lacking the ubiquitin ligase RNF5 exhibit attenuated activation of the unfolded protein response (UPR) components, which coincides with increased expression of inflammasome components, recruitment and activation of dendritic cells and reduced expression of antimicrobial peptides in intestinal epithelial cells. Reduced UPR expression is also seen in murine and human melanoma tumor specimens that responded to immune checkpoint therapy. Co-housing of Rnf5−/− and WT mice abolishes the anti-tumor immunity and tumor inhibition …

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Phytosterols are natural health-promoting bioactive compounds; however, phytosterols have very limited bioavailability due to their crystalline lipophilic structure. With the aim of improving bioaccessibility, low-crystallinity phytosterol nanoparticles were generated by supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) impregnation of phytosterols into nanoporous starch aerogels (NSAs). The in vitro bioaccessibility of the phytosterol nanoparticles (35%) was significantly higher than that of the crude phytosterols (3%) after sequential oral, gastric, and intestinal digestion. The percentages of starch hydrolysis were not different among the various NSA preparations and reached to 64% after sequential digestion. The zeta potential of the phytosterol nanoparticles was higher compared to that …

Formation Of Low-Density And Free-Flowing Hollow Microparticles From Butter And Fractionated Palm Oil Mixture, Joshua Gudeman, Junsi Yang, Ozan Ciftci

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

The use of solid fats is challenging due to difficulty in incorporating into foods, handling during industrial food production, and relatively high-calorie contributions. The objective of this study was to form free-flowing and low-density hollow microparticles from nonhydrogenated fats, namely, butter and fractionated palm oil, using a novel method based on atomization of a carbon dioxide (CO2)- expanded lipid mixture. The melting point of the fractionated palm oil decreased from 66.2 to 47.3°C above 120 bar in the presence of pressurized CO2. The density of the particles decreased five-folds compared to that of the original oils. …

It is not known if DNA bacterial profiles in the pancreas and duodenum are similar within individuals.

Methods: Tissue samples were obtained from 50 subjects with pancreatic cancer or other conditions requiring foregut surgery at the Rhode Island Hospital (RIH), and from thirty-four organs obtained from the National Disease Research Interchange. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed on 189 tissue samples (pancreatic duct, duodenum, pancreas), 57 …

Physicochemical Properties And Rheological Behavior Of Flours And Starches From Four Bean Varieties For Gluten-Free Pasta Formulation, Hollman Motta Romero, Yue Zhang Jan 2019

Physicochemical Properties And Rheological Behavior Of Flours And Starches From Four Bean Varieties For Gluten-Free Pasta Formulation, Hollman Motta Romero, Yue Zhang

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

The rheological behavior of gluten-free flour dispersions from four pulse market classes, including great northern, navy, red kidney (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), and garbanzo beans (Cicer arietinum) were evaluated and compared to soft wheat as a gluten-containing control. Their starches were isolated and the relationships between flour behavior and starch characteristics were studied. Soft wheat (56%) and garbanzo (39%) flours presented higher starch contents than the Phaseolus vulgaris beans (33–35%), which resulted in the development of stronger gel network structures. It was found that starch amylose content and granule size affected the swelling and pasting properties of both starches and flours. …
