Objective: Provide recommendations to audiologists for the management of children with unilateral hearing loss (UHL) and for needed research that can lend further insight into important unanswered questions. Design: An international panel of experts on children with UHL was convened following a day and a half of presentations on the same. The evidence reviewed for this parameter was gathered through web-based literature searches specifically designed for academic and health care resources, recent systematic reviews of literature, and new research presented at the conference that underwent peer review for publication by the time of this writing. Adjusts Limitations In Medical Negligence Cases. Initiative Statute.

Initiatives

In medical negligence cases, adjusts for inflation: (1) $250,000 limit established in 1975 on quality-of-life and survivor damages (which include pain and suffering); and (2) contingent attorney’s fees limits established in 1987. In cases involving death or permanent injury, allows judge or jury to exceed these limits and requires judge to award attorney’s fees. Requires attorneys filing medical negligence cases to certify reasonable basis for claims or good faith attempt to obtain medical opinion; attorneys who file meritless lawsuits must pay defendant’s expenses. Extends deadlines for filing medical negligence lawsuits. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance …

Impact Of Mixer Design On Lean Direct Injection Combustion, Xiao Ren Dec 2019

Impact Of Mixer Design On Lean Direct Injection Combustion, Xiao Ren

Doctoral Dissertations

To reduce the environmental impact of aviation, lean direct injection (LDI) combustion is being pursued to achieve very low emissions. LDI utilizes multi-point mixers to achieve low NOx emissions and satisfactory combustion stability. Since the performance of LDI directly depends on design parameters of each single LDI mixer, a series of fundamental investigations into lean-dome-relevant pilot combustor devices are conducted herein. A single LDI mixer typically uses swirlers with converging venturi and diverging flare to generate swirling flows, which facilitate mixing in the combustor dome. This dissertation aims to investigate the impact of LDI mixer design parameters, including swirler vane …

Ontrack: A Program Evaluation, Justin Mynatt

Doctoral Projects

OnTrack is a program that provides coordinated specialty care (CSC) services for patients who have experienced their first episode of psychosis (FEP). Appropriately identifying and aggressively treating this vulnerable population, while providing support to both them and their families is critical for improved outcomes. Appropriate treatment of FEP patients can improve their quality of life, preserve brain matter, improve overall functioning, and lessen the burden of the clients’ family who may be involved in their care, such as caregiver strain or financial hardship. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the success of OnTrack, a FEP program, at improving …

Appellate Briefs

Amici are constitutional law scholars who teach and write in the field of constitutional law, including as it relates to regulation of abortion, and who have a shared interest in identifying the proper standards of review. This brief sets forth Amici's considered understanding of the framework governing abortion regulation, as established by the decisions of this Court, and how to preserve the undue burden test as established in this Court's precedents over the last two decades. It also explains why the decision below, if permitted to stand, would threaten the uniformity and supremacy of federal law.

Association Of Aspirin Use With Mortality Risk Among Older Adult Participants In The Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, And Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial, Holli A. Loomans-Kropp, Paul Pinsky, Yin Cao, Andrew T. Chan, Asad Umar

Open Access Publications

Importance: Aspirin use has been associated with reduced risk of cancer mortality, particularly of the colorectum. However, aspirin efficacy may be influenced by biological characteristics, such as obesity and age. With the increasing prevalence of obesity and conflicting data regarding the effect of aspirin in older adults, understanding the potential association of aspirin use with cancer mortality according to body mass index (BMI) and age is imperative.

Objectives: To investigate the association of aspirin use with risk of all-cause, any cancer, gastrointestinal (GI) cancer, and colorectal cancer (CRC) mortality among older adults and to perform an exploratory analysis of the …

Operating Room First Case Start Times: A Metric To Assess Systems-Based Practice Milestones?, Christopher Ryan Hoffman, Jay Horrow, Shreyas Ranganna, Michael Stuart Green

Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Resident competence in peri-operative care is a reflection on education and cost-efficiency. Inspecting pre-existing operating room metrics for performance outliers may be a potential solution for assessing competence. Statistical correlation of problematic benchmarks may reveal future opportunities for educational intervention.

METHODS: Case-log database review yielded 3071 surgical cases involving residents over the course of 5 years. Surgery anticipated and actual start times were evaluated for delays and residents were assessed using the days of resident training performed at the time of each corresponding case. Other variables recorded included day of week, attending anesthesiologist name, attending surgeon name, patient age, …

An Electronic Medical Records-Based Approach To Identify Idiosyncratic Drug-Induced Liver Injury In Children., Tracy L. Sandritter, Jennifer Goldman, Clayton J Habiger, James F. Daniel, Jennifer Lowry, Ryan T. Fischer

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is the leading cause of liver failure in the United States and the most common cause of drug recall. As opposed to the recognized direct toxicity of super-therapeutic acetaminophen or chemotherapeutic agents in children, limited data exists for pediatric populations on the incidence of idiosyncratic DILI (iDILI) that may develop independently of drug dose or duration of administration. To improve the detection of adverse drug reactions at our hospital, we utilized electronic medical records-based automated trigger tools to alert providers of potential iDILI. Clinical criteria concerning for iDILI were defined as serum ALT > 5x or serum …

The Effects Of Urbanization On Bee Communities Depends On Floral Resource Availability And Bee Functional Traits., Caleb J Wilson, Mary A Jamieson Dec 2019

The Effects Of Urbanization On Bee Communities Depends On Floral Resource Availability And Bee Functional Traits., Caleb J Wilson, Mary A Jamieson

Entomology Faculty Publications

Wild bees are important pollinators in many ecosystems threatened by anthropogenic disturbance. Urban development can reduce and degrade natural habitat for bees and other pollinators. However, some researchers suggest that cities could also provide refuge for bees, given that agricultural intensification may pose a greater risk. In this study, we surveyed bee communities at 15 farms and gardens across an urban-rural gradient in southeastern Michigan, USA to evaluate the effect of urbanization on bees. We examined how floral resources, bee functional traits, temperature, farm size, and the spatial scale of analysis influence bee response to urbanization. We found that urbanization …
