The Internet Of Torts: Expanding Civil Liability Standards To Address Corporate Remote Interference, Rebecca Crootof Dec 2019

The Internet Of Torts: Expanding Civil Liability Standards To Address Corporate Remote Interference, Rebecca Crootof

Duke Law Journal

Thanks to the proliferation of internet-connected devices that constitute the “Internet of Things” (“IoT”), companies can now remotely and automatically alter or deactivate household items. In addition to empowering industry at the expense of individuals, this remote interference can cause property damage and bodily injury when an otherwise operational car, alarm system, or implanted medical device abruptly ceases to function.

Even as the potential for harm escalates, contract and tort law work in tandem to shield IoT companies from liability. Exculpatory clauses limit civil remedies, IoT devices’ bundled object/service nature thwarts implied warranty claims, and contractual notice of remote interference …

In this study, we investigated the therapeutic efficacy of VERU-111 in vitro and in vivo model systems of cervical cancer. VERU-111 treatment inhibited cell proliferation and, clonogenic potential, induce accumulation of p53 and down regulated the expression of HPV E6/E7 expression in cervical cancer cells. In addition, VERU-111 treatment also decreased the expression of phosphorylation of Jak2 (TyR1007/1008) and STAT3 at Tyr705 and Ser727. VERU-111 treatment arrested cell cycle in the G2/M phase and modulated cell cycle regulatory proteins (cyclin B1, p21 p34cdc2 and pcdk1). Moreover, VERU-111 treatment induced apoptosis and modulated the expression of Bid, Bcl-xl, Survivin, Bax, Bcl2 …

Limitations with existing methods and materials used for nerve repair shows the significant interest to keep researching new materials for nerve implants. Recent studies show the importance of material properties to cell behavior. This body of work focuses on understanding the effect of material properties on the behavior of PC12 neurons. The first part of the work attemepts to quantify the relationships between cell parameters and substrate properties. Based on this study, random topographies with surface roughness of 0.5 µm and Young’s modulus of 2MPa are the optimum substrates for neurite outgrowth in PC12 cells. The second part investigates the …

Re-Gendering Midwifery In Eighteenth-Century London, Amanda Catriona Castellano-Clark Dec 2019

Re-Gendering Midwifery In Eighteenth-Century London, Amanda Catriona Castellano-Clark

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis intends to show how the field of British midwifery changed through the rise of male-midwives during the eighteenth-century in London. Midwifery, which had previously been a women-only profession in that era, came to be dominated by male-midwives who argued that men should be in charge of this field due to the inherent "weakness" of women and therefore the supposed inadequate training of midwives. In this thesis, I will argue that male-midwives succeeding in asserting their dominance through the development of tools such as the forceps, through the establishment of courses about midwifery, and through the publication of treatises …

Kellyanne Conway And Postfeminism: 'The Desert Of The Real', L. Shelley Rawlins Dec 2019

Kellyanne Conway And Postfeminism: 'The Desert Of The Real', L. Shelley Rawlins

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Postfeminism is a slippery, contested, ambivalent, and inherently contradictory term – deployed alternately as an “empowering” identity label and critical theoretical lens. Troubling notions about the past, present, and future of feminism, postfeminism challenges feminist theory. This essay scrutinizes cultural and theoretical themes informing postfeminist discourses. I identify four prevailing themes in extant literature: postfeminist oblivion, self-empowerment, criticality, and feminine pride. I then examine the public discourse and self-asserted postfeminist stance of Kellyanne Conway, former campaign manager and current counselor to President Trump. Conway advocates for an individualistic, depoliticized femininity. I argue that her complacent misogyny bolsters the bizarre imaginary …

Getting “Woke” On Intersectionality: Illuminating The Rhetorical Significance Of Disability Discourse In Feminist Activist Spaces, Danielle C. Biss Dec 2019

Getting “Woke” On Intersectionality: Illuminating The Rhetorical Significance Of Disability Discourse In Feminist Activist Spaces, Danielle C. Biss

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

In the 28 years since the establishment of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), individuals with disabilities still live on the margins in social, public, and mediated discourse. Women of color with disabilities, in particular, still struggle to challenge their positionality on the margins due to multifaceted layers of oppression, ranging from sexism, racism, classism, and ableism as further complexities of identity. Yet, in a society with such disregard for and contestation involving disability issues, there is hope with disability activist Vilissa Thompson. In this rhetorical analysis, I examine Thompson as a marginal rhetor whose disability activism serves as a …

Ideographic Identity: A Critical And Rhetorical Analysis Of The Ymca’S Organizational Identity Rhetoric, Katharine E. Miller Dec 2019

Ideographic Identity: A Critical And Rhetorical Analysis Of The Ymca’S Organizational Identity Rhetoric, Katharine E. Miller

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This paper presents an ideographic, rhetorical analysis of the identity rhetoric presented by the nation’s largest nonprofit organization, the YMCA—an area rather understudied in organizational communication and qualitative research. This analysis explores the rhetorical approaches taken by nonprofit organizations, and the YMCA specifically, in attempting to build and communicate identity to communities in which they belong. Specifically, I analyze the organization’s identity-building rhetoric through the use of both textual and visual ideographs in a variety of artifacts to determine whether or not these strategies are effective.

Is Our Coal-Onial Era Ending Anytime Soon?, Hadiqa Faraz Dec 2019

Is Our Coal-Onial Era Ending Anytime Soon?, Hadiqa Faraz

Undergraduate Economic Review

In this paper, I estimate the long-run co-integrated relationship between energy demand and economic growth for 20 countries from the year 2000 to 2016. I use panel unit-root and heterogeneous panel co-integration tests to test for non-stationarity of the panels and to determine whether there is a long-run link between energy consumption and GDP per capita. The estimated model uses a first-difference OLS model to estimate income elasticity of energy demand; the empirical results of this model show that there is a long-run relationship between energy consumption per capita and GDP per capita. In the long-term, on average, with 1% …

Deconstructing Durin’S Day: Science, Scientific Fan Fiction, And The Fan-Scholar, Kristine Larsen Dec 2019

Deconstructing Durin’S Day: Science, Scientific Fan Fiction, And The Fan-Scholar, Kristine Larsen

Journal of Tolkien Research

An analysis of attempts by fans (including scientists) to either ascribe a Real World date or a consistent Secondary World date to the fictional luni-solar holiday "Durin's Day" in The Hobbit demonstrates the value of such "scientific fan fiction." In particular, such endeavors can increase the scientific knowledge of both the fan-author and audience. These examples can also be used in the classroom or outreach to demonstrate both the impressive level of Tolkien's integration of real-world science in his sub-creation of Middle-earth, as well as highlight the limitations of Tolkien's understanding (an educational endeavor in and of itself).

Bayesian Filtering Methods For Dynamic System Monitoring And Control, Erotokritos Skordilis Dec 2019

Bayesian Filtering Methods For Dynamic System Monitoring And Control, Erotokritos Skordilis

Open Access Dissertations

Real-time system monitoring and control represent two of the most important issues that characterize modern industries in critical areas of civilian and military interest, including the power grid, energy, healthcare, aerospace, and infrastructure. During the past decade, there has been a rapid development of robust dynamic system monitoring and control methods for fault diagnosis and failure prognosis. Among various monitoring and control policies, condition-based maintenance (CBM) has been studied by many researchers due to its ability to enable a large amount of monitoring data for real-time diagnostics and prognostics. A considerable amount of literature has been published on the subject, …

Using Lifestyle Educational Intervention To Decrease Blood Pressure Reading Amongst African American Adults, Catherine Madu Dec 2019

Using Lifestyle Educational Intervention To Decrease Blood Pressure Reading Amongst African American Adults, Catherine Madu

Dissertations

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a global epidemic and a major public health challenge in the United States. Hypertension increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and renal failure. The disease disproportionately affects African Americans (AAs) and is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in this ethnic group. Effective management of hypertension decreases complications from the disease. The purpose of the clinical scholarly project (CSP) was to decrease blood pressure readings amongst AA adults, ages 18 to 65 years old using educational intervention on lifestyle modifications. A convenience sampling of 20 AA (n = 20) adult participants was …

Life After Death: An Autoethnography Of A Teacher’S Journey Through Personal Grief And Loss, Kimberlyn Oliver Dec 2019

Life After Death: An Autoethnography Of A Teacher’S Journey Through Personal Grief And Loss, Kimberlyn Oliver

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

This study sought to understand how grief and loss affected me on a personal and professional level. Additionally, the process of grief and loss and its effects on teacher performance was examined. The death of a loved one often leaves a person feeling a great deal of emotions. As an educator, it is incredibly difficult to process grief and loss at work due to the demands of working with students all day. Nine participants were recruited for this study and I used semi-structured interviews to discover more about the experiences of these educators while they dealt with the loss of …
