“A” For Effort: Rewarding Effortful Retrieval Attempts Improves Learning From General Knowledge Errors In Women, Damon Abraham, Kateri Mcrae, Jennifer A. Mangels
Publications and Research
Previous research has shown that the prospect of attaining a reward can promote task engagement, up-regulate attention toward reward-relevant information, and facilitate enhanced encoding of new information into declarative memory. However, past research on reward-based enhancement of declarative memory has focused primarily on paradigms in which rewards are contingent upon accurate responses. Yet, findings from test-enhanced learning show that making errors can also be useful for learning if those errors represent effortful retrieval attempts and are followed by corrective feedback. Here, we used a challenging general knowledge task to examine the effects of explicitly rewarding retrieval effort, defined as a …

Shifting Positionalities Across International Locations: Embodied Knowledge, Time-Geography, And The Polyvalence Of Privilege, Blanca Minerva Torres-Olave, Jenny J. Lee
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
Despite a robust body of scholarship on positionality, the practice of international higher education research often neglects engagement with the varied, fluid, and complex positionalities of researchers across national boundaries. Through a series of vignettes, the authors argue for reflexivity that extends beyond rigid social identities and towards embodied knowledge, or selfunderstanding that is mutable and context-responsive. For international mobile researchers especially, new affinities can evolve through propinquity and social custom, and gradually become incorporated into self-knowledge with the passing of time. Beyond mere cultural competency, this article raises the importance of symbolic competency that simultaneously negotiates the multiple dimensions …

Philology Matters
The article is devoted to analysis of the development of CLIL approach which is gaining considerable attention of world educators because ofits dual aim: teaching a foreign language through content and teaching content through a foreign language. The material of the study was a theoretical framework offered by the founders of this approach. Objective: to identify the role of the main components of this approach called “4C”s– content, communication, cognition and culturewhich should be dwelled into every CLIL class-room. Along with it, it presents the principles and ways of integrating CLIL into the school’s educational program. The author focuses on …

Sustainable Model Of Rural Vitalization In Hilly And Gully Region On Loess Plateau, Chen Yiping, Zhang Yi
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The great achievements of ecological construction have been made on Loess Plateau since the founding of the People's Republic of China, but the contradiction among population, farmland and grain production has become increasingly prominent in some regions. Document No. 1 of the Central Committee put forward "Opinions on the Implementation of the Strategy of Rural Revitalization" in 2018. On the basis of our many research and previous reference analysis, here we put forward the sustainable revitalization model of hilly and gully region on the Loess Plateau:namely, the coupling development model of ecology, economy, and society, i.e. cutting hilltops to build …

In Obergefell v Hodges Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote for a majority holding that samesex couples enjoy a constitutional right to marry as part of substantive due process Yet in Masterpiece Cakeshop Ltd v Colorado Civil Rights Commission his majority opinion held that the Free exercise Clause invalidated government sanctioning of a baker who had refused to bake a cake for a samesex couples wedding reception In both cases the Court reasoned that the government must maintain neutrality when confronted with competing viewpoints The Masteriece Cakeshop Court concluded the state Civil Rights Commission had violated this requirement by impugning the bakers …

The Battle For Paradise: Tourism Development, Race, And Popular Politics During The Remaking Of Cartagena (Colombia),1942-1984, Orlando Deavila Pertuz
Doctoral Dissertations
Beginning in the mid-twentieth century, the Colombian state and private agents joined efforts to turn Cartagena into an international tourist destination. To do so, they refashioned the city center to recreate the colonial landscape and promote Cartagena’s image as an untainted paradise frozen in time. This dissertation demonstrates that the city’s remaking was largely rooted in the systematic segregation of locals whose presence was deemed to be inconvenient for tourism development. As the city center became a historical district, certain uses and socio-economic practices –such as low-income housing, street vending, wholesale trade, etc.- were prohibited or discouraged by zoning regulations …
Integrating Climate Change Adaptation In The Planning And Regeneration Of Coastal Urban Areas: Priorities Barriers, And Future Prospects, Daniel Young, Stephen Essex
Integrating Climate Change Adaptation In The Planning And Regeneration Of Coastal Urban Areas: Priorities Barriers, And Future Prospects, Daniel Young, Stephen Essex
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing society and the spatial planning system plays a crucial role in ensuring that important adaptations to the built environment are evaluated. Drawing upon a mixed-methods research approach, this paper explores the progress that has been made by the planning system in England in addressing the challenge of climate change adaptation in coastal urban areas. The results indicate that the adaptation produced through the planning system remains incremental rather than transformative. It is focused on experienced hazards, especially flooding, and there is a lack of attention being paid to wider impacts of …
Using Primary Sources In Content Areas To Increase Disciplinary Literacy Instruction, Salika A. Lawrence, Elise Langan, Julie Maurer
Using Primary Sources In Content Areas To Increase Disciplinary Literacy Instruction, Salika A. Lawrence, Elise Langan, Julie Maurer
The Language and Literacy Spectrum
This paper describes how a three-day summer workshop on using primary sources helped teachers increase the emphasis placed on disciplinary literacy when teaching social studies and history. Two specific issues in teacher education and practice are addressed. First, increasing teachers’ content knowledge of history topics can help them plan lessons that connect local and global events. Second, content area reading requires literacy practices, which are unique to disciplines. Therefore, teachers need to apply historical inquiry and disciplinary literacy methods in the curriculum.

Immigration/Migration And Settler Colonialism: Doing Critical Ethnic Studies On The U.S. - Mexico Border, Raquel Andrea Madrigal
Immigration/Migration And Settler Colonialism: Doing Critical Ethnic Studies On The U.S. - Mexico Border, Raquel Andrea Madrigal
American Studies ETDs
My dissertation argues that the U.S.-Mexico border, and the militarized operations of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security via Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement along the border, including state and federal anti-immigration law, are historically ongoing settler colonial structures of U.S. imperialism, and empire, which are asserted upon, and over Indigenous people and their land. I claim that these anti-immigrant, and anti-migrant structures and operations perpetuate Native dispossession, and removal, as well as deny Native presence and sovereignty. I also contend that undocumented immigrant and migrant justice must be accountable and responsible to Indigenous peoples, their land, and …

Changes In The Spatial Distribution And Anatomy Of A Range Shift For The Atlantic Surfclam Spisula Solidissima In The Mid-Atlantic Bight And On Georges Bank, Jeremy R. Timbs, Eric N. Powell, Roger Mann
Faculty Publications
The Atlantic surfclam Spisula solidissima supports one of the largest fisheries on the US northeast coast. Using ~30 yr of data from surfclam stock surveys, variance-to-mean ratios (VtMRs) were calculated both temporally and spatially for a range of surfclam size classes to determine the degree of patchiness. The VtMR declined from the 1980s to present in all regions (offshore Delmarva, New Jersey, Long Island, Southern New England, Georges Bank); however, VtMR rose with increasing clam size. Taylor’s power law (TPL) analysis corroborated the VtMR; the surfclam is highly patchy across its range. The surfclam’s proclivity for a patchy distribution varied …

Dual-Self Representations Of Ambiguity Preferences, Madhav Chandrasekher, Mira Frick, Ryota Iijima, Yves Le Yaouanq
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We propose a class of multiple-prior representations of preferences under ambiguity, where the belief the decision-maker (DM) uses to evaluate an uncertain prospect is the outcome of a game played by two conflicting forces, Pessimism and Optimism. The model does not restrict the sign of the DM’s ambiguity attitude, and we show that it provides a unified framework through which to characterize different degrees of ambiguity aversion, and to represent the co-existence of negative and positive ambiguity attitudes within individuals as documented in experiments. We prove that our baseline representation, dual-self expected utility (DSEU), yields a novel representation of the …

Iron Range Engineering - An Overview Of Design And Open-Ended Problem Solving Activities In An Interdisciplinary, Project-Based Learning Program, Elizabeth Pluskwik
Integrated Engineering Department Publications
Project-based learning (PBL) in engineering education is growing at a rapid pace. The Iron Range Engineering (IRE) Program of Minnesota State University Mankato, is an upper division (3rd and 4th year) undergraduate engineering education program based on the Aalborg, Denmark PBL model. Students work in teams to solve industry-sourced projects each semester. The learning of engineering is accomplished in three domains - technical learning of engineering concepts, professionalism, and design, which we call the “three-legged stool” of engineering education. The program promotes entrepreneurial mindset and innovative open-ended problem-solving in context. Fifty students are enrolled in 3rd and 4th-year studies at …

Biological Sciences
Diversity of secondary lichen metabolites and their relationship to substrate and environmental parameters were studied in saxicolous lichens in the Middle and South Urals of Russia. Atranorin, usnic acid, gyrophoric acid, zeorin, norstictic acid, antraquinones and stictic acid were found in 73, 42, 41, 37, 36, 35 and 32 species, respectively, of 543 taxa collected. One hundred and ninety six species (i.e., 36% of total species documented) contained no secondary metabolites. Spectra of secondary metabolites of crustose lichens varied on different rock types, while in fruticose and foliose groups only those species without lichen acids were dependent on the substrate …

Population Structure Of Avian Malaria Parasites, Robert Ricklefs, Meghann Humphries, Matthew Stacy
Biology Department Faculty Works
The geographic distribution of genetic diversity in malaria parasite populations (Apicomplexa: Haemosporida) presumably influences local patterns of virulence and the evolution of host‐resistance, but little is known about population genetic structure in these parasites. We assess the distribution of genetic diversity in the partial Domain I of apical membrane antigen 1 (AMA1) in three mtDNA‐defined lineages of avian Plasmodium to determine spatial population structure and host–parasite genetic relationships. We find that one parasite lineage is genetically differentiated in association with a single host genus and among some locations, but not with respect to other hosts. Two other parasite lineages are …

Knowledge Of Stroke Warning Symptoms And Risk Factors: Variations By Rural And Urban Categories, Kathleen Ann Ennen
Dissertations
Stroke continues to have a devastating disabling effect on Americans while remaining the third leading cause of death in the United States. Most Americans do not recognize the symptoms of stroke causing delay in receiving emergency treatment. The purpose of this research was to assess the knowledge of stroke symptoms and risk factors in a general public Midwest sample. Secondarily, similarities and differences in stroke knowledge between rural and urban groups were identified. The self administered Stroke Recognition Questionnaire (SRQ) directed at stroke knowledge assessment was developed. This descriptive, correlational study used a non-experimental quantitative design.
