Working Paper No. 13, Friedrich List And National Development, Mitch B. Priestley Jun 2019

Working Paper No. 13, Friedrich List And National Development, Mitch B. Priestley

Working Papers in Economics

This inquiry seeks to establish that Friedrich List offers an approach to national economic development based upon implementing policies. List conceptualizes and describes a situation wherein the United States, along with Germany and some other Continental European countries, face challenges dissimilar to Britain. List emphasizes an alternate approach towards national development that flies in the face of Adam Smith’s laissez-faire, free-trade prescription, focusing instead upon the powers of production, that he suggests, offer a proper measure of a nation’s wealth. List is a limited protectionist who advocates for national policies suited to a nation based upon its history and level …

Working Paper No. 24, Economic Thought During Japan’S Meiji Era, Karson M. Pence

Working Papers in Economics

This inquiry seeks to establish that it was Fukuzawa Yukichi who played a key roled in developing ideas that assisted the modernization of Japan, leading up to and especially after the Meiji Reformation of 1868. In An Outline of a Theory of Civilization [1875], Fukuzawa advances a clear understanding that Japan should make the shift from a producer nation to a manufacturer nation, and without having to bear the costs of importing vast sums of foreign capital. Under suspicion that the 250 year rule of the Bakufu left the Japanese economy stagnant and weak, Fukuzawa asserted that the only means …

Forest Structure, Composition, And Regeneration After High-Severity And Rapidly Repeated Wildfires In The Central Cascade Range, Sebastian Upton Busby Jun 2019

Forest Structure, Composition, And Regeneration After High-Severity And Rapidly Repeated Wildfires In The Central Cascade Range, Sebastian Upton Busby

Dissertations and Theses

Within mid-to-high elevation conifer forests in the Cascade Range, wildfire extent, severity, and frequency are expected to rise due to increasingly drier forest fuels under climate change. Considering dominant species composition, existing forests may be poorly adapted to absorb stress and recover following altered wildfire patterns. We tested the hypothesis that increased fire activity may disrupt the recovery of upper-montane and subalpine forest types by quantifying post-fire forest structure and conifer regeneration after spatially large, severe, and rapidly repeated wildfires in the Central Cascade Range. A stratified random sampling design was used to select field plots (n=122) and drivers of …

Politics In The San Clemente Dam Removal, Aylan Matthew Lee Jun 2019

Politics In The San Clemente Dam Removal, Aylan Matthew Lee

Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the role of politics in the removal of the 106-foot tall San Clemente Dam. The removal project and negotiations provide a case study of the contemporary phenomenon of dam removal. My analysis joins a growing body of social science literature on the social, political, and human dimensions of removal. The San Clemente Dam, which impounded the Carmel River near Monterey, California, was removed in 2015, the largest such project completed in California. Drawing on political ecology and science and technology studies, and using a mixed qualitative approach, I assess both the role of politics in shaping the …

Challenges To European Democracy—The New Totalitarian Temptation: Global Governance And The Crisis Of Democracy In Europe, Don Thieme, Todd Huizinga

Naval War College Review

The New Totalitarian Temptation: Global Governance and the Crisis of Democracy in Europe, by Todd Huizinga. New York: Encounter Books, 2016. 272 pages. $23.99.

Todd Huizinga writes that there is an emergent trend threatening to reverse some of the hard-won gains of democracy in Europe. He builds his critique on three lines of analysis: social-benefit-oriented governance, demography, and morality. Put differently, those might be money, people, and religion. It may be, Huizinga notes, that there is a “loss of faith and civilizational exhaustion” (p. 202) on both sides of the Atlantic, but it is more pronounced in Europe.

Nato’S Selective Sea Blindness—Assessing The Alliance’S New Navies, Thomas-Durell Young

Naval War College Review

The navies of NATO countries fall into two categories: old and new. The new navies lack modernization and readiness, making them deficient in their contributions to NATO security priorities. Sea blindness is a problem across the spectrum of NATO governments and illuminating this problem is now more important than ever in light of an increasingly aggressive Russia.

Colonialism, Apartheid, And Democracy: South Africa's Historical Implications On The Land Reform Debate, Adeline Piotrowski Ms. Jun 2019

Colonialism, Apartheid, And Democracy: South Africa's Historical Implications On The Land Reform Debate, Adeline Piotrowski Ms.

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

This research examines South African history, beginning with it as a colonial entity up until its inception as a democratic state, and how it works in conjunction with the land reform debate. This paper addresses arguments of South Africa's colonial history, analyzes policy making during the apartheid era, and traces the steps taken towards becoming a democracy. Furthermore, it places special attention to how actions mandated by the apartheid government, and legislation from this time period, are currently affecting the debate at hand. It then addresses the current debates on land reform and some social implications that come along with …

Ireland: A Study In The Effectiveness Of Corporate Tax Rate Reduction, Caleb Howard Jun 2019

Ireland: A Study In The Effectiveness Of Corporate Tax Rate Reduction, Caleb Howard

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

The Republic of Ireland, which until recently had one of the worst standards of living in Europe, experienced a period of tremendous growth throughout the 1990s and early 2000s that revolutionized their economy and society, transforming their country into the “Celtic Tiger”. Much of this growth was due to foreign multi-national corporations (MNCs) investing in the Irish economy. This study examines the potential reasons behind the increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows and determines that it was primarily due to Ireland’s reduction in corporate tax rates between 1987 and 2003. However, other determinants of national advantage such as education …

Fluid-Mediated, Brittle–Ductile Deformation At Seismogenic Depth – Part 1: Fluid Record And Deformation History Of Fault Veins In A Nuclear Waste Repository (Olkiluoto Island, Finland), B Marchesini, Ps Garofalo, L Menegon, J Mattila, G Viola

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The dynamic evolution of fault zones at the seismogenic brittle–ductile transition zone (BDTZ) expresses the delicate interplay between numerous physical and chemical processes. Deformation and fluid flow at the BDTZ are closely related and mutually dependent during repeating and transient cycles of frictional and viscous deformation. Despite numerous studies documenting in detail seismogenic faults exhumed from the BDTZ, uncertainties remain as to the exact role of fluids in facilitating broadly coeval brittle and ductile deformation at that structural level. We combine structural analysis, fluid inclusion, and mineral chemistry data from synkinematic and authigenic minerals to reconstruct the temporal variations in …

Rethinking Services With Communities Of Color: Why Culturally Specific Organizations Are The Preferred Service Delivery Model, Ann Curry-Stevens, Gerald Deloney, Matt Morton

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Racial disparities in social, education and health services continue unabated despite efforts to address them. At the margins of the service delivery system are lesser-known and minimally researched programs known as “culturally specific organizations” that have been developed by and with communities of color. These are organizations that have been developed by a specific community of color and continue to serve that same community of color. This article shares the insights of three leaders in racial equity, who have been immersed in Portland-based organizations for many years: two as organizational leaders and one as an academic research partner. The paper …

The importance of long-distance dispersal (LDD) in shaping geographical distributions has been debated since the nineteenth century. In terrestrial vertebrates, LDD events across large water bodies are considered highly improbable, but organismal traits affecting dispersal capacity are generally not taken into account. Here, we focus on a recent lizard radiation and combine a summary-coalescent species tree based on 1225 exons with a probabilistic model that links dispersal capacity to an evolving trait, to investigate whether ecological specialization has influenced the probability of trans-oceanic dispersal. Cryptoblepharus species that occur …

Barriers To Community Gardening In Portland, Or, Jullian Michael Schrup Jun 2019

Barriers To Community Gardening In Portland, Or, Jullian Michael Schrup

University Honors Theses

This paper analyzes structural, social and cultural barriers to community gardening in Portland, Oregon. Both the majority of Portland's demographics and the majority of its community gardeners are white, with much of the minority populations being progressively gentrified and displaced outside of the urban center. Exasperating this displacement is Portland's uneven investment in sustainable and green infrastructure in a process currently being studied as eco-gentrification. In tandem with the eco-gentrification literature, there is growing evidence that urban agriculture and community gardens disproportionately benefit white middle-class individuals through exclusionary spaces that omit minority participation. Portland's community garden participation of black and …
