Investigating The Relationship Between Hydrological Variation, Land Use/Cover Change And Climate Change At Regional And Local Scales Under Future Scenarios, Hui Wang Jun 2019

Investigating The Relationship Between Hydrological Variation, Land Use/Cover Change And Climate Change At Regional And Local Scales Under Future Scenarios, Hui Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

The connections between environmental change and human activities are complex. Scientists have been working on understanding the interactions between hydrological processes, land use/cover change (LUCC) and climate change in both qualitative and quantitative ways for several decades. Although previous studies show that interactions between these three aspects are typically multidimensional and occur in multiple spatial and temporal scales, a systematic investigation of their historical and future relationships is still lacking at a local scale, especially when considering the non-stationarity of LUCC. This doctoral dissertation applies quantitative research methods, such as hydrological and LUCC modeling methods, to cover two general study …

Code Switching In A Bilingual Workplace, Montserrat Ricossa Jun 2019

Code Switching In A Bilingual Workplace, Montserrat Ricossa

Celebration of Learning

Bilingual people often find themselves in a situation where they switch from one language to another. As with the number of Spanish speakers exponentially increasing in the United States, “code-switching” within Spanish and English is more noticeable within work spaces. When and where does code switching occur? Why does it occur? And how will it affect a work space? This essay will argue that code switching can be used within any environment, regardless of class or education. First, it’s important to know the history of code switching and how it differs from Spanglish. “In-groups” can be formed with basic similarities …

The Ethnohistory Of Freshwater Use On Rapa Nui (Easter Island, Chile), Sean W. Hixon, Robert J. Dinapoli, Carl P. Lipo, Terry L. Hunt Jun 2019

The Ethnohistory Of Freshwater Use On Rapa Nui (Easter Island, Chile), Sean W. Hixon, Robert J. Dinapoli, Carl P. Lipo, Terry L. Hunt

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

Sources of drinking water on islands often present critical constraints to human habitation. On Rapa Nui (Easter Island, Chile), there is remarkably little surface fresh water due to the nature of the island’s volcanic geology. While several lakes exist in volcanic craters, most rainwater quickly passes into the subsurface and emerges at coastal springs. Nevertheless, the island sustained a relatively large human population for hundreds of years, one that built an impressive array of monumental platforms (ahu) and statues (moai). To understand how Rapanui acquired their scarce fresh water, we review ethnohistoric data from first European arrival (1722) through the …

Mangrove Mapping And Above-Ground Biomass Change Detection Using Satellite Images In Coastal Areas Of Thai Binh Province, Vietnam, Long Duc Nguyen, Cuong Trong Nguyen, Hoa Sy Le, Bao Quang Tran Jun 2019

Mangrove Mapping And Above-Ground Biomass Change Detection Using Satellite Images In Coastal Areas Of Thai Binh Province, Vietnam, Long Duc Nguyen, Cuong Trong Nguyen, Hoa Sy Le, Bao Quang Tran

Forest and Society

Mangroves are recognized as a highly valuable resource due to their provision of multiple ecosystem services. Therefore, mangrove ecosystems mapping and monitoring is a crucial objective, especially for tropical regions. Thai Binh province is one of the most important mangrove ecosystems in Vietnam. The mangrove ecosystem in this province has faced threats of deforestation from urban development, land reclamation, tourism activities, and natural disasters. Recently, to maintain the fundamental functions of the ecosystems, a large mangrove area was planted in Thai Binh. The aim of this research is to detect the change in the mangrove areas and to create an …

Rethinking Map Literacy And An Analysis Of Quantitative Map Literacy, Ming Xie Jun 2019

Rethinking Map Literacy And An Analysis Of Quantitative Map Literacy, Ming Xie

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Maps are increasingly being used in traditional and virtual media, and civic discourse on political, social, and environmental issues, among others, is more and more becoming influenced by them. The often-used expression of a “picture tells a 1000 words” has never been so apt in our progressively more visual world. Despite this increased role and importance of maps, map literacy, as a field of research, remains rather underdeveloped. This is especially so for thematic maps, the very type of map that is finding increasing currency in discourse. As part of this under-developed nature of map literacy, the quantitative skills used …

Reducing Emissions, Forest Management And Multiactor Perspectives: Problem Representation Analysis Of Laos Redd+ Programs, Herlin Chien Jun 2019

Reducing Emissions, Forest Management And Multiactor Perspectives: Problem Representation Analysis Of Laos Redd+ Programs, Herlin Chien

Forest and Society

Every policy solution is embedded in a certain “problem representation” that is taken for granted and assumed by policymakers. This paper examines how emission reductions and forest management have been problematized for policymaking and solution implementation from multiple actors’ perspectives. Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), particularly Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) programs, in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) serves as a demonstrative example. By applying the ‘What is the Problem Represented to be’ (WPR) approach as a poststructuralist method, this study first comparatively analyzes the general problem as represented by multiple actors, including the government, …

Contribution Of Forest To Rural Households’ Livelihood: Evidences From Da River Basin In The Northwest Mountainous Region Of Vietnam, Tran Van Chu, Trinh Quang Thoai, Cao Quoc An, Pham Minh Toai, Leni D. Camacho, Hoang Van Sam Jun 2019

Contribution Of Forest To Rural Households’ Livelihood: Evidences From Da River Basin In The Northwest Mountainous Region Of Vietnam, Tran Van Chu, Trinh Quang Thoai, Cao Quoc An, Pham Minh Toai, Leni D. Camacho, Hoang Van Sam

Forest and Society

This paper examined how forest has contributed to rural households’ livelihood in Da river basin, the northwest mountainous region of Vietnam. The results revealed that forest predominantly contributes to the total income of rural residents in the region. Specifically, forestry land area, access to non-timber forest products, and payment for forest environmental services significantly affected household’s income in the region. However, rural people in the region have still faced several difficulties that constrain household’s livelihood. Of these difficulties, lack of financial capital, epidemic diseases in animal husbandry, limited access to market information and natural disaster are popular barriers to livelihood …

Hourly Precipitation Climatology Of The Southeast United States, Vincent Brown Jun 2019

Hourly Precipitation Climatology Of The Southeast United States, Vincent Brown

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Precipitation changes are one of the most important potential outcomes of a warming climate because of how essential it is to society and ecosystems. Sub-daily precipitation time series provide more information on precipitation characteristics, particularly frequency, intensity, and duration compared to daily data. In a series of four peer-reviewed manuscripts, this research investigates sub-daily precipitation characteristics from a climatological perspective. The first study introduces a climatology of hourly precipitation for four first-order weather stations across Louisiana, explores possible changes in the hourly precipitation distribution, and links winter Gulf of Mexico sea surface temperatures to the frequency of hours with precipitation. …

On The Composistion Of Cymodocea Nodosa Root Exudate Under Artificial Blue, Green And Natural Light Conditions, Armand Martin, Ben Manriquez, Christian Pompa, Aaron Saper, Kyle A. Grice, Jason Bystriansky

DePaul Discoveries

Seagrasses are identified as a sentinel species: a good indicator of overall marine ecosystem health and function. At the rhizome, they are known to interact with marine bacteria by exchanging energy in the form of glucose and free amino acids secreted through root exudate in exchange for microbe-fixated nitrogen that can be utilized for plant growth. To analyze potential outcomes of possible future changes in light availability, an experiment was designed to collect and analyze the root exudate of Cymodocea nodosa under three light conditions (standard fluorescent light, blue LED, and green LED light). After 72 hours of treatment, the …

A Playful Life Cycle Assessment Of The Environmental Impact Of Children's Toys, Madeline R. Robertson, Christie Klimas Jun 2019

A Playful Life Cycle Assessment Of The Environmental Impact Of Children's Toys, Madeline R. Robertson, Christie Klimas

DePaul Discoveries

Toys aid in children’s progression through developmental stages, yet toy production has an environmental impact. This study is the first comparative life cycle assessment of three children’s toys. A life cycle assessment quantifies the impact of an item in comparable impact categories (i.e. global warming potential in kg CO2 equivalents). In this study, we use open LCA to compare toy impact from production to use. The results indicate that the plastic polybutylene carried the highest impact in terms of global warming potential for our predominantly plastic toy. The addition of a battery to the plush dog increased the toy’s eutrophication …

There Are Multiple And Geographically Distinct Opioid Crises In The U.S., Shannon M. Monnat Jun 2019

There Are Multiple And Geographically Distinct Opioid Crises In The U.S., Shannon M. Monnat

Population Health Research Brief Series

Rates of fatal drug overdose increased 250% in the U.S. between 1999 and 2017, due in large part to a massive surge in overdoses involving opioids. However, there is substantial geographic variation in fatal opioid overdoses, and prescription opioids, heroin, and fentanyl are differentially responsible for high overdose rates across different parts of the U.S. This research brief summarizes the findings from a study just published in the American Journal of Public Health. The study shows that there are at least four geographically distinct opioid overdose crises in the U.S.

An Urban Flash Flood Alert Tool For Megacities—Application For Manhattan, New York City, Usa, Rafea Hashim Al-Suhili, Cheila Cullen, Reza Khanbilvardi

Publications and Research

Urban flooding is a frequent problem affecting cities all over the world. The problem is more significant now that the climate is changing and urbanization trends are increasing. Various, physical hydrological models such as the Environmental Protection Agency Storm Water Management Model (EPA SWMM), MIKE URBAN-II and others, have been developed to simulate flooding events in cities. However, they require high accuracy mapping and a simulation of the underground storm drainage system. Sadly, this capability is usually not available for older or larger so-called megacities. Other hydrological model types are classified in the semi-physical category, like Cellular Automata (CA), require …

Evolutionary Dynamics Of Influenza Type B In The Presence Of Vaccination: An Ecological Study, Lindsey J. Fiedler Jun 2019

Evolutionary Dynamics Of Influenza Type B In The Presence Of Vaccination: An Ecological Study, Lindsey J. Fiedler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the evolutionary dynamics of influenza type B in human hosts is a public health concern as we strive to minimize the disease burden in seasonal epidemics. Vaccination is considered the best defense against contracting influenza, and everyone over the age of 6 months is advised to get vaccinated before each season. The effect that vaccine-acquired immunity has on the evolution of influenza B remains unclear. In the U.S., vaccine-uptake is irregular across the states, and the differing coverages present an opportunity to study how vaccination influences viral evolution. This thesis analyzes the evolutionary patterns of influenza B in the …

Reconciling Storegga Tsunami Sedimentation Patterns With Modelled Wave Heights: A Discussion From The Shetland Isles Field Laboratory, Ag Dawson, S Dawson, Stein Bondevik, Pedro J.M. Costa, Jon Hill, Iain Stewart Jun 2019

Reconciling Storegga Tsunami Sedimentation Patterns With Modelled Wave Heights: A Discussion From The Shetland Isles Field Laboratory, Ag Dawson, S Dawson, Stein Bondevik, Pedro J.M. Costa, Jon Hill, Iain Stewart

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The Shetland Isles represent an ideal field laboratory for tsunami geoscience research. This is due to the widespread preservation of Holocene tsunami sediments in coastal peat deposits. This study uses published accounts of the Holocene Storegga Slide tsunami to illustrate how two different approaches – mapping of tsunami sediments and numerical modelling – produce radically different run-up heights. The Storegga Slide is one of the world largest submarine slides and took place ca 8150 cal yr bp on the continental slope west of Norway. The tsunami generated by the landslide deposited locally extensive sheets of marine sand and gravel, as …

Searching For The Green Man: Researching Pilgrimage In Israel/Palestine And Egypt, Mary Thurlkill Jun 2019

Searching For The Green Man: Researching Pilgrimage In Israel/Palestine And Egypt, Mary Thurlkill

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

This article examines contemporary pilgrimage in Israel / Palestine and Egypt, based upon field work conducted December 2017-February 2018 and personal narrative. My argument is twofold: first, I contend that Pilgrimage Studies allows scholars to move beyond reductive labels and consider the implicit ‘messiness’ of religious faith and ritual praxis. I introduce the Islamic al-Khidr and Moses story from Qur’an 18.60-82, as an interpretative model, suggesting that rigid categorization—especially concerning religious identity and sectarian division—promotes a false narrative of monolithic faith traditions that, upon closer examination, does not fully exist. Second, by referencing my ethnographic experiences, I consider pilgrimage as …

A Repeated Cross-Sectional Study Of Clinicians’ Use Of Psychotherapy Techniques During 5 Years Of A System-Wide Effort To Implement Evidence-Based Practices In Philadelphia, Nathaniel J. Williams

Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Little work investigates the effect of behavioral health system efforts to increase use of evidence-based practices or how organizational characteristics moderate the effect of these efforts. The objective of this study was to investigate clinician practice change in a system encouraging implementation of evidence-based practices over 5 years and how organizational characteristics moderate this effect. We hypothesized that evidence-based techniques would increase over time, whereas use of non-evidence-based techniques would remain static.

Method: Using a repeated cross-sectional design, data were collected three times from 2013 to 2017 in Philadelphia’s public behavioral health system. Clinicians from 20 behavioral health outpatient …

Weaving The Threads Of The Global Tapestry, Melendy Jacobie, Gretchen Wickes Jun 2019

Weaving The Threads Of The Global Tapestry, Melendy Jacobie, Gretchen Wickes

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

Tapestries are woven pictures that convey meaning and information through art and design. Sometimes used to tell stories to those who could not read, they are like a snapshot, or image, of people and places long ago. When combined with the sections created by their classmates, students will have a complete image of the world to put the rest of the course into context. This project will provide an opportunity for students to explore, at a deeper level, the key themes of the AP World History Modern course.
